Your bandanna turned out really nice. By the way, the reason I watch you is because you really are a breath of fresh air. Have a blessed one.
If you have ADHD and have *any* internal clock, that's not a weird flex, it's a HUGE flex. Lol. I have no perception of time passing. (but have a weird internal clock where I can wake up easily if I know I need to eat up) Meanwhile my partner with Autism and OCD constantly always knows exactly how much time has passed, will pass, has ever passed. I used to have such good time sense ("back when I was your age") [sips Geritol, adjusts mob cap, settles more deeply into rocking chair]. I would, without any specific clock-watching, arrive somewhere for a 2:00 appointment, check my watch; & it'd be 1:57. That has changed, mostly due to some of the effects of ME/CFS like fatigue, cognitive changes, & the frequent rediscovery of things I'd forgotten had been left undone. I'm a crocheter: knitting is an unknown country to me. I watch you for the yarn geekery, the more general geekeries, & the cats. You can do somethings to fix crochet, like use a long yarn tail catching up a missed loop of ply or tightening the tension around a hole. & oc you can make increases or decreases to adjust a stitch count after the fact. But beyond that, you rip it or you live with it. (My general willingness to rip seems to be one of my greater crochet "talents"- I'm certainly much less talented at not screwing up in the first place.)
To help with the holes, if u want em smaller, you can do 2 things. Smaller crochet hook, or don’t do the chain 1 in between. I’m so happy crocheting the bandana is doing everything for u!! I’m currently knitting a tulip lace bandanna for my husband to cover his neck for the summer.
I appreciate you being kind about people who do not have good time perception! I am one of those people. I genuinely cannot understand how much time has passed unless im literally watching a clock. I generally think its because I'm living too much inside my own head and not considering what's happening in the real world? There have been multiple times when my husband (who has excellent time perception) and i have been doing something, like eating at a restaurant or walking somehere, and he'll ask me how long I think it's been, and I will be WILDLY off. Like I'll think weve been sat down at a restaurant for 20 mins and it's actually been 45. I honestly don't know how to fix it unless I just put 500 clocks around my house. 😬
This! So much of this. I am often in my own head and easily distracted. I pad my time for how long it will take me to do something and I am often still way off. My husband is one of those there 15 minutes early people and my lack time perception is a huge handicap to him.
Crocheter here, I followed since that giant yarn ball experience and loved your vibe since. I'm also absolutely time blind, ADHD runs in our family and it's a 50/50 chance if one of us literally turns clocks an hour early to make it on time to things (in essence getting very rigid to overcome our problems with time perception) or just winging it at all times and giving up on the battle, lmao!

"i could do that right now: i could stop everything, go take a shower and be ready to leave out the door" my ADHD is a different brand than yours (i am diagnosed and medicated for it) and I can say it's not purely time blindness, though that is definitely a factor for some of us. the key thing with your above statement is *stop everything*. a lot of people have difficulty regulating our focus or switching tasks, so "five minutes" will never make sense when we can't pry our attention away from whatever we're working on lol that said, I can also be "ready" in 5 mins, at the cost of dropping everything, grabbing my keys, and running out the door. depends on the sense of urgency/importance, and making myself rush bc i didn't allow myself enough time to shower never feels good. -------- on another note: i also crochet pretty tightly and I do not like how things turn out when i have to crochet into chain stitches, so you might prefer "foundation single crochet"!
I'm someone who predominantly crochets and just learned to knit last year. In my opinion, knitting mistakes are a lot easier to fix if they're small because like you said, you can ladder down and get back to it. With crochet, you're correct that you either need to fudge it or frog it. BUT I still think that BIG crochet mistakes are easier to fix compared to knitting. If I just finished a row and i realize the whole thing was wrong, it takes me two seconds to frog it when I'm crocheting, and it takes me an hour to tink it when I'm knitting.
I absolutely love your iPad cover!! Until you opened it up I literally thought it was just a composition notebook and was wondering where your pattern was xD
Also I love when people see joy in being a beginner at something. I've been crocheting for about 20 years now (my grandma taught me as a child) and it's so refreshing to see people have the same type of struggles I had when I taught myself to knit. You've totally got this!!
I’m a person with an internal clock from some different planet with a much longer timescale. I can’t say “I’ll be ready in 5 minutes” because I can barely finish anything in 5 minutes 😅
I've read someones comment here telling us why they like to watch your videos so I thought I share my reasoning too. Watching your videos while I knit kind of feels like sitting in a café with a friend that has the same hobby as I do and wants to update me on their experience. British person here 😂 crochet surgery wise fudge or frog am afraid also as a British person when I hear about biscuits and gravy 😂 biscuits for us are cookies for you 😅
Soooo many things: 1) US vs UK language - I'm German, so English isn't my first language but I'm fluent. I'm definitely British influenced, and have been in a situation where I needed to "translate" from British to American, but never the other way around, probably because we're all used to TV shows etc with American English. 2) single crochets into the chain - I hate it too! Foundation crochet is a passable solution, but it's never going to be fun. 3) a knit version of the bandana - Emily (?) from yt channel High Fiber Knits did one a while ago which she was absolutely in love with, maybe you want to check it out. 4) time blindness - My husband and I have different "flavours" of AuDHD, and he can easily forget that it's time to eat or that he needs to leave the house. My anxiety and hangriness will prevent both
my tip for making smaller "holes" in granny-style patterns is to chain fewer for the spaces; if you want to get it to look more like that pattern examples specifically, matching gauge would probably be the most effective way
Reassuring you as an advanced crocheter that picot stitches are tricky! It takes time and practice to get consistent tension with them, and even once you have that they'll generally always benefit from a good wet blocking with pins to tug each one into a perfect pointed shape. Congrats on following your first written crochet pattern - there are so many lovely ones out there. Your bandana turned out super cute! I love how you styled it. Your wardrobe gives me so much inspo when I watch your videos - everything looks so good on you. Thanks for sharing with all of us. It's a privilege to get to know you so well through your videos. Never feel bad about only sharing what you want to. Boundaries are so important and the key to having a healthy relationship with yourself and with others. You give so much. It's enough. ❤
Crochet girly here! One, you nailing the granny stitch and figuring out Picot is a HUGE effort you’ve gotta be nicer to yourself haha! And also if u want to try clothing I’d really recommend giving Hannah Drapinski’s YT tutorial for a raglan it’s super easy and fast to make and might help with ur confidence in making crochet clothes!
As a time-challenged person, my perception of time is very fluid, like someone is randomly speeding up or slowing down how time flows. I also have a hard time conceptualizing how big the chunks of time are to know how much time to budget for activities, which makes planning a day of errands or activities very difficult. While I know it takes me 30 minutes to get out the door, when I'm trying to get ready three minutes may feel like only one, and then all of a sudden one perceived minute will be 3 minutes in real time. Taking my ADHD meds helps to make time more orderly, but it's not a perfect fix.
To be honest, I can get ready in 5 minutes, but if something goes wrong, like a misplaced clothing item or a cat throws up, etc. It will take me longer, which is just unfortunate, but not my fault in that situation, but it just happens so often that something does go wrong >~< For the crochet, yeah.. It's hard to repair something, so most of the time you do indeed need to frog it.. The highschool experience is still very different to be fair, I'm from Europe and we do not have cheerleaders, sport teams or things like band, we just have the basic things like gymnastics, which is just running around, playing games, climbing, etc. and then normal classes like math, language [your own and mostly 1 other being English, with luck you get a 3rd], biology [depending on the school], etc. The bandana turned out so cute!! Looks great on you ^~^
Just providing some info so you can decide where you want to go from there with it, because I will always assume someone _doesn't_ know about kinda niche crochet drama~: hayhaycrochet is a well-documented pro-lifer, and also iirc has some pretty hateful views on other things/people in the world, too. This provided a good overview for me in the past! th-cam.com/video/kbnsVQrZZoA/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=madeinthemoment
Also omg - I absolutely have time blindness and so am the complete opposite of you 😂 I truly have no concept of how much time has passed most of the time - it annoys you but trust me it annoys me too hahaha, I wish I could get it!
The lack of gauge swatch might be why your holes are bigger, if your tension is looser than the designer your holes will be bigger, also it's way harder to do surgery on crochet, your mostly have to frog back or fing a way for your mistake to not be apparent, most of the time unless it's a really big mistake it's easy to hide Love watching your videos, can't wait to see your crochet journey, if you ever need pattern recommendations I would love to give you some!
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 You can use nice yarn for crochet! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Thank you for saying that! This is my personal mantra. Also, as a crocheter with ADHD, I'm loving the visual timer. I'm off to hyper focus on finding where to buy one! ❤❤❤
Pants? Uk term for the long outer version is trousers! 5 mins? It can also be used as a 'I won't be very long' statement which will probably be longer than an actual 5 minutes but wouldn't be much longer - certainly not half an hour. We used to have a good friend who was always really late - like 30-45 minutes. We used to call it Jane time and tell her 30 minutes earlier for meet ups! Bandana is very cute. I had a weird moment as your cat jumped down to the right of my screen just as my cat (also black from the back) stretched up just off the right side of my screen!! 🐈⬛😂😂
I only crochet and I love your videos so much, this was such a fun time! I worked on my Tunisian crochet temperature blanket for my first year of marriage while you worked on this bandana! Search Moon Shadow Temperature Blanket if you want to see pictures of the pattern I'm following. Also, I'm Canadian and my moment to share of americans using the same word for something different is in the candy world! When you think of "smarties" I bet its a chalk-y candy that comes stacked and wrapped in a little plastic rectangle. For us Canadians, those are called rockets! For us, smarties are chocolate covered in a candy coating, LIKE M&Ms but better 😂
That blanket sounds so so so special 🥰 You are also 100% right about the candy, I had no idea and I’m a chocolate girl at heart so next time I’m in Canada, I’ll have to pick up some Smarties
For why your holes look big - while it might be your tension/hook size - it looks like you're using really tight tension. In granny stitch if you use tight tension, your holes are going to be bigger because the part you're doing the stitch into will be pulled up more into more of a straight line. I find using looser tension makes smaller holes because there is more room for them to give a bit and for the dc to fan out, if that makes sense?
Great video once again 😊😊 lovely way to wind down after a tiring day About the language thing- I live in Quebec, Canada, and we speak French with a very different accent and different slang than European French- so back in ~2017 I watched French youtubers and they had very different slang to mine- theres this slang "type" ig, called "verlan" (from "l'envers" meaning inverted) where you invert syllables in words. Some examples include: mec (dude) -> keum femme (woman) -> meuf louche (dodgy) -> chelou énervé (angry/annoyed) -> vénère flic (cop) -> keuf and fou (crazy) -> ouf. So after a while, whenever I would encounter a new word, I would invert the syllables to see if it made more sense that way- still do it sometimes to this day lol Hope you're having a good one :)
1. So: I'm still working on the dragonfly scarf for my friend. The most nerve-wracking part, the beginning, is done, I'm maybe 1/3 of the way so far. (One row takes me 16-20 minutes.) I didn't crochet too much these past few days, as I've been occupied with some other tasks. Such as cleaning out/re-organizing my wardrobe, to once again fit everything. (With breaks it took me a good 3 and a half hours..) 2. Anyway.. I think your bandana turned out lovely! 3. I don't claim myself an expert so my best guess in how to make the holes smaller would be to either use a higher yarn-tension, or to use a smaller hook. It could also simply be because of a yarn difference. As far as my expirience goes some yarns "bulge out" more than others, so they fill the space a bit better. 4. I myself have a decent perception of time. I do learn a lot of it through routine; I know taking a shower and washing my hair takes me 17-20min, including drying myself off. But with first time things my time perception is rather inaccurate. And I often loose track of how quickly time moves by when I'm doing something. I'm still a very punctual person, although I sometimes "prefer" being 5min late, rather than having to wait almost an hour, as I often travel by train, which only come so often. 5. With the American english vs. British english. I myself don't mind it all too much, as english isn't my mother tongue. However, I do have it with German german vs. Austrian german. I stay away from german content to the most extend as I find their tone of voice as well as their choice of words rather irritating. The only german content I really enjoy are gaming/let's play youtubers. (They are great background material for crochet work.) And I've found two of those and that's enough. And now I just hope that this covers it all!
I don’t have ADHD. I am really bad at time estimating. I need to check the clock all the time because I hate being late. I am a doctor and normal appointments are 15 minutes. That’s the timeframe I can kind of estimate. If it’s longer (longer appointment) I get so lost and it’s so stressful. I envy you.
Sorry to confirm your fears here, but ripping it out (frogging) is basically akin to tinking.... fudging can help in small surgery matters. But for most, yes indeed, frogging happens. But this style suits you! Great job!!
Ah, I'm one of your UK viewers haha🫡 I can't remember anything in American media or even from US "content creators" that threw me off, but I think that's because American media is very widespread so I grew up with it along with things from the UK and other places in Europe, so there's always been a certain degree of familiarity as far as I can remember! Though as you pointed out, Televised US culture is different from actual day to day culture so I bet an actual visit to the US would be a different experience haha. This bandana turned out really nice, and you styled it well at the end with the double denim! Such a cute look😄
Ha. I'm time blind. When I was 5 I was CONVINCED there was a long five minutes and a short five minutes and they were totally different things. This is why I always have a watch or a clock and obsessively check it. Otherwise I'll look up and it will have been 4 hours and I won't have eaten or had anything to drink.
i am entirely time blind. i have virtually no concept of how long things will take or have taken unless i'm actively watching the seconds tick past. usually i do the opposite of what most time blind people are blamed for, and i overestimate how long something will take. i'll be doing a task, or talking to someone, or reading a book, and it feels like 30 minutes have passed when it's only been 2-5. other times, i'll completely undershoot, especially when it comes to cooking and baking, and i think a lot of that can be attributed to the fact that i (and probably other time blind people) fail to consider all of the smaller, time consuming tasks that make up one larger one. like, i can shower in about 7 minutes. but that doesn't take into account the time i spend shaving, washing my face, applying moisturizer, drying off, etc. i don't typically wind up being really late or off-kilter as a result of my time blindness, but instead what i do is way overestimate and end up being hours early to avoid inconveniencing people. people with that inherent internal clock will try to help but it really is just a matter of "you have it, or you don't".
Time blindness (an ADHD symptom) is like being stuck in slow motion while time passes normally, but I can't perceive that I'm in slow motion. Time always moves faster than I anticipate and I'm incredibly frustrated by it. Also, it's like my attention resources go to the task I'm busy with, and other visible distractions, but none of the attention goes to just observing time (not a clock). It feels like people who don't have time blindness have some portion of their attention sort of observing time, even if it feels subconscious. I will observe time for a period of time, until that attention goes everywhere else. When you tell me what time it is from the last time I was observing it, it literally makes no sense.
German person with some experience living in the US here: from a European perspective, I find that your real highschool is TOTALLY like highschool in movies. In comparison to our schools there is just so much that is different here so that your reality feels very close to TV/cinema. 😄 But I do understand that if you grow up in the US you are more aware of the differences than the similarities. Perspective is everything, eh?
Hi jewel, did you mean to write "does not" support women's rights to bodily autonomy? Emma's video goes in depth about how Hay Hay was spreading misinformation from Students for Life (an anti-choice organization) That's why I've been avoiding her patterns, some of the things she said to attack people who pointed out the misinformation was vile
The tutorial pronounced Picot wrong, it's not picow, but more like picoh, T is completely silent. Word comes from french might be why the pronunciation is this way.
I have ADHD too. I do not have any concept of how long things take. I can do the same thing hundreds of times, and if you ask me to estimate how long it will take me to do that thing again today, I cannot tell you.
Are you chaining between granny clusters? If yes, you can skip the chain in between and it will make the gaps smaller :) And I'm very jealous of anyone who can tell how much time has passed 😂 I know mechanically it takes me x minutes to do y thing, so I plan accordingly - but that is after many years of trial and error and being late lol
We say top in the UK and you say shirt. We assume a shirt to be a suit shirt, well I do. My daughter says shirt, and pants and sounds American lol you said noggin then too, that’s a very Yorkshire saying here x
I love that sweater! It’s the Maybe Forever sweater by Kutovakika (Veronika Lindberg) in her book “knit this”. I used Drops Air yarn. I think she’s planning to release her patterns individually outside of her book soon.
I totally get that about languages. Not in English per sé, as that is not my first language, but there's the same difference between Dutch and Flemish Dutch. To me if someone Flemish says they drink a cup of tea/coffee, it sounds like they're drinking a little bag of coffee. Or if they say they wear a dress, to me it sounds like they wear a rug. On the other hand, if I say I was doing big business on the toilet, to them it sounds like I was f-cking the crude way. Language is funny like that! Also, those people who assume you're neurotypical just because you never told them otherwise are way overstepping. You probably already know though. I kind of can relate, as people also tell me I can't be autistic/don't understand because I'm way too social or normal. Those people just are not able to see past their own narrow scope ... I guess to those people who are time blind, that is just as normal as noticing the time is to us.
So, time blindness. Its not that I think it takes me 5 minutes to get ready and it took me 30 minuets. Its that unless I'm staring at a clock I have no concept of time so 5 minutes isn't 5 minutes, it's a small amount of time and 30 minutes is also a small amount of time just not as small. I don't think of it in logical numbers unless I'm trying. Actually numbers in general don't have much meaning to me unless I apply meaning like people will say how much something cost and they can describe a small island and a fighter jet and unless I really focus on those numbers I don't really have a concept of how much money that is, it's just alot of money. I'm also diagnosed with ADHD Also most of the time I mesure how long things take me in tasks and not time. For example, I have 5 minuets That's just enough time to put on my shoes and coat and grab a snack. But if I'm not really focused on doing those tasks then that 5 minuets will stretch out because I got distracted and stared into space or I couldn't find a snack or my coat was on the other side of the house, it still feels like 5 minutes to me bacuse those are the tasks that take 5 minuets but it was actually longer because I got distracted. Not an exact example but I think you get the idea.
OMG you made my wife so happy by using her suggestion. She was all excited and bouncing that you chose her idea. Thanks for making her day.
Oh my gosh yesssss!!!! That makes me so happy 🥰

British person here 😂 crochet surgery wise fudge or frog am afraid also as a British person when I hear about biscuits and gravy 😂 biscuits for us are cookies for you 😅
😂 I think about that all the time!
Congrats on your crochet achievement.
I love how Pippin just fell asleep on you knee. 😻
Soooo many things:
1) US vs UK language - I'm German, so English isn't my first language but I'm fluent.
My anxiety and hangriness will prevent both
my tip for making smaller "holes" in granny-style patterns is to chain fewer for the spaces; if you want to get it to look more like that pattern examples specifically, matching gauge would probably be the most effective way
Very cute project!
I love the British bake off myself, and I love when they use terms like chuffed😂
You’re so kind!!! Thanks for the recommendation, I just subscribed and I can’t wait to start watching her videos 🧶
The word “fanny” has a different meaning in the UK so when I first heard someone say “shake your fanny” in a US show I was very confused hahah!
Fanny packs
Very different 😂😂😂😂
The beginning is always the hardest part of a crochet project IMO.
Oh I made this exact bandana!! How awesome!! It's a really fun project to make and honestly pretty easy as crochet goes.
To be honest, I can get ready in 5 minutes, but if something goes wrong, like a misplaced clothing item or a cat throws up, etc. It will take me longer, which is just unfortunate, but not my fault in that situation, but it just happens so often that something does go wrong >~<
For the crochet, yeah..
Thanks for letting me know! I had no idea

5:42 its probably about your hook size and tension. tighter tension and smaller hook can maybe solve your problem.
The lack of gauge swatch might be why your holes are bigger, if your tension is looser than the designer your holes will be bigger, also it's way harder to do surgery on crochet, your mostly have to frog back or fing a way for your mistake to not be apparent, most of the time unless it's a really big mistake it's easy to hide
Love watching your videos, can't wait to see your crochet journey, if you ever need pattern recommendations I would love to give you some!
Oh also, little thing, but when we say x chain from the hook, it does count the one on the hook, we're very litteral
THANK YOU!!!! This is so helpful. I think you’re exactly right!
Great video once again 😊😊 lovely way to wind down after a tiring day
About the language thing- I live in Quebec, Canada, and we speak French with a very different accent and different slang than European French- so back in ~2017 I watched French youtubers and they had very different slang to mine- theres this slang "type" ig, called "verlan" (from "l'envers" meaning inverted) where you invert syllables in words. Some examples include:
mec (dude) -> keum
femme (woman) -> meuf
louche (dodgy) -> chelou
énervé (angry/annoyed) -> vénère
flic (cop) -> keuf
and
fou (crazy) -> ouf.
So after a while, whenever I would encounter a new word, I would invert the syllables to see if it made more sense that way- still do it sometimes to this day lol
Hope you're having a good one :)
1. So: I'm still working on the dragonfly scarf for my friend. The most nerve-wracking part, the beginning, is done, I'm maybe 1/3 of the way so far. (One row takes me 16-20 minutes.)
I didn't crochet too much these past few days, as I've been occupied with some other tasks. Such as cleaning out/re-organizing my wardrobe, to once again fit everything. (With breaks it took me a good 3 and a half hours..)
Great job!!
Immediately goes searching for a visible timer.
😂 love this and thanks 😊
Hay hay crochet does support women’s right to bodily autonomy btw Emma in the moment has a video on it
Thanks for letting me know!
How can it take 5 min to get ready when you should count on potty time?
I’m speedy, like Lightning McQueen
@@BreathingYarn oh, no, I meant the people that say they can get ready that fast!
I always think things will take less time than they do! 😅 Definitely have a hard time gauging time!
Are you chaining between granny clusters? If yes, you can skip the chain in between and it will make the gaps smaller :)
And I'm very jealous of anyone who can tell how much time has passed 😂 I know mechanically it takes me x minutes to do y thing, so I plan accordingly - but that is after many years of trial and error and being late lol
We say top in the UK and you say shirt. We assume a shirt to be a suit shirt, well I do. My daughter says shirt, and pants and sounds American lol you said noggin then too, that’s a very Yorkshire saying here x
My internal clock is weird. I either lose track of time super easily, or I'm up and walking to the kitchen when there's seconds left on the timer.
I love bandana (and bananas) and I'm going make this. I'm going to make some smaller to use as cleavage covers.
I love the lilac jumper you're wearing in the first part of the video! Did you make it and if so is there a pattern and where can I find it?
I love that sweater! It’s the Maybe Forever sweater by Kutovakika (Veronika Lindberg) in her book “knit this”. I used Drops Air yarn. I think she’s planning to release her patterns individually outside of her book soon.
@@BreathingYarn thank you so much!
Your fireplace glass is super cool looking! Did you do the design yourself or did it come like that?
I made the wooden frame and drew on designs with a chalk marker :)
Gauge swatch? I don’t know her either
Gauge swatch! Your tension may be different and you might need to change hooks.
I'm also diagnosed with ADHD
Also most of the time I mesure how long things take me in tasks and not time.
I agree with you about time awareness. Isn’t it relief when you meet a new person who can be on time when most people “run late” .
