Persona 2 Innocent Sin review! [PSP] The Game Collection

  • SuperDerek explores the progress made by Atlus since Persona 1 in this Persona 2 Innocent Sin review!
    Like the Final Fantasy series, the US didn't end up getting all of the Persona titles when they were first released. After Persona 1 was released, development began on Persona 2: Innocent Sin. Unfortunately we never ended up getting Innocent Sin. Sure we got Persona 2, but that was actually Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, a sequel of sorts to Innocent Sin. Well maybe that's not exactly the right way to put it. Most call the games a duology, and long story short, we only got part two until Atlus released Innocent Sin on the PSP.

    I'm a toy designer and one of my clients asked me about the Joker figure for this game. Your video was the first suggested. Great review, great production values, great audio. Very professional. Keep it up, hopefully you get to 100K subs soon.

      Actually quite a few references to persona 1 and 2 in number 3. Not so much the events but little easter egg nods. Like Mitsuru's company use to be a part of the Nanjo Group.

      I like how if you choose to name your character Tatsuya in Innocent Sin Online, the person who named thier character Maya goes "I didn't know anyone else had played that game!" ;_; Atlus why are you so eager to let the best Persona plot be banished to obscurity?

    A bit of a correction. The Shin Megami Tensei branding is primarily attached to western releases of the Persona franchise in order to garner brand appeal. But later installments of the Persona games in the west ditch the SMT branding.

    Personally, I disagree with the ending in terms of closure. Yes it does set up events for Eternal Punishment (which more than pays them off), but seeing how much the world has been changed by the character's meeting and the sacrifice they made to save it makes for a satisfying conclusion to a story that was all about the consequences one's actions hold and how an event from the past may affect the future, a butterfly effect if you will. Still, some good points were made for an overall good review. Kudos.

      Yup!:D I bought that one on the PSN for my PSP at random last sunday night and my computer had a huge DNS error when I tried to download the files I needed to transfer the game to my system, so then I was told to download Mediago, which bypasses those download requirements and just transfers the game to your system without any extra stuff, but the DNS stuff kept happening, so I had to use my smartphone as an internet router and was able to download the game at last!

    This was great. Remember talking with about Persona after I got back from Germany and picked this game up randomly while I was over there... Still haven't finished it, haha, a seriously random experience (I just got past the bit where you save the kids from a burning building during a field trip), hearing about the ending though, I can imagine anything would be disappointing after the trip this game puts you through... Interesting hearing about the other Persona 2 but I don't think I was ever that invested to keep going with it...

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I don't blame you, really. But for what it's worth, it's at least worth finding out the truth about their pasts. That part alone gave me a bit of a mindsplosion and got me really invested in the characters. Who knows, maybe once you've gotten that far you might change your tune. The character development within the game really seems a cut above.

Yeah, to be completely honest I didn't know either until I did some initial research before the review, so I had to hurry up and snag a copy of EP for my next review! Super Derek I guess it is just another one of those many times when Japan didn't let the West know, not unlike the pre-FFVII numbering and Tales of Destiny II/Eternia.
      We did get the physical UMDs, but they're painfully rare weirdly, so I think that will require an import. I'd rather import a physical copy of Eternal Punishment too, but knowing it's on the US PSN at least means it is accessible here.
      Thanks for the knowledge, I would have otherwise overlooked EP, and I'm looking forwards to your review on the second part of this duology!

      ElBribri If you're looking to get into the series, I highly recommend starting off with Persona 3 FES, or Persona 3 Portable. Reasons being that they exhibit a lot of the darker aspects that people love about the earlier Persona titles,while containing a lot of the gameplay elements of Persona 4. The reasons I suggest either the FES or Portable versions are because they contain additional story elements, and P3P has alternative playable characters (male or female) if that interests you.

      wow good for you, I wussed out of nocturne 12 hours in lol. your not missing much by skipping persona 1, and for 2 I'd actually recommend playing eternal punishment before innocent sin because all the characters have amnesia in EP and it kinda makes you feel that more, although I'm crazy so idk, although chances are you already played both P2 games

      johnnyvanjones I'm guessing that eventually I'll cover every SMT game, it's just a matter of time and money. Right now I'm just going to focus on the Persona titles until I get to 4, then maybe branch out into the other titles in the SMT universe later on. :)

    I have beaten every single Persona game, starting with P3 way back in the day. I loved P3, and still do to this day, but later got a chance to play P4G the week it came out. I beat it, and I loved it too. I definitely liked P3 better than P4, but that could've just been me. I went back and played the PSP remake of P1, but really wasn't too fond of it. I was going to go on to P2IS and P2EP but I decided that I should wait till I passed the JLPT N4 test so I could play both the PSP remakes in Japanese. I got into my Japanese studies, and a year or so later I picked up P5 and kicked it's ass. At that point I was like, "Hey, these games are fricken great." I had also played SMTIV and SJ by then, digging the series and it's combat. But then when studying abroad in Japan, I picked up P2IS. Until I played IS I had always said my favourite game was P3. I was wrong. Persona 2: Innocent Sin 「罪」 is a perfect game. Also, the Japanese version has a dungeon editor which is freaking awesome. Love it.

    I really want to love this game, and deep down I do like it. Unfortunately there is just something incredibly tedious about it. Whether it is demon / card collecting, or the excessive grinding, or even both. I'm not sure exactly why. I do enjoy some of the characters and writing. I've got 40 hours into it and can't really tolerate the last stretch. I've had the PS1 game since it was released, but I almost think I'll never play it.
    The battle refinements, remixed music, and other enhancements really I improved the game on the PSP. It is just a shame that Atlus will never release the other half for PSP and only offer excuses.
    Basically, two broken halves of a whole.

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zach B That's too bad. Yeah I'm pretty certain that 10 hours of my play-through was just grinding. But if you're at the 40 hour mark, I would probably just power through it. I bet that with the stock Personas (Apollo and others) and some good fusion spells thrown in like Summon Spirits and Fury Strike (I think that's what it's called,) you could just power through all the way to the end without much more grinding.
      Having started EP, I really like the direction they're going with the characters and plot. At least, so far anyway. :)

    Yeah, from what I've read some years back, P2: Innocent Sin (the 1st chapter of P2) wasn't released in North America originally due to a gay relationship in the game. However, in the PSP release years later, Atlus edited out and toned down that factor.
    Truly, Eternal Punishment is my favorite Persona, but I would've liked to have seen what came before it back then in the PS1 days.

    I'm like 30 hours in and damn it, this game is so freaking easy. I played it right after playing persona 1 on psp, and that game actually had some challenge. Every battle has been the same. If it's a boss, I use the spell that gives your whole team healing at the end of every turn and spam the 2 person fire and wind spells, regular enemies I use the 3 person spells and wipe them out in about 2 turns.
    The way I built Tatsuya, he's pretty much invincible and has a mana pool that I haven't even come close to using yet. Even when an enemy hits his weakness, it does maybe 6 damage and i have 400 health. The only challenging boss I've fought so far was one that use the party wide light spell and I didn't have any revive items because the game was too easy to justify buying them up until that point.

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're playing on PSP, I think there are 3 different difficulty settings that you can switch up on-the-fly. Do you know which one you're currently playing on? Might be time to turn it up if you haven't already. :)

    • @askmiller
      @askmiller 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Super Derek Ya, I've been playing on normal, which was the same I play on all persona games when given the option. This one is surprisingly easier than all of the others. Even crafting personas is ridiculously easy in this one.

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      askmiller Yeah, that's the mode I played on, but I also made all of Tatsuya's stats equal which might have bumped up the difficulty for me. I think the game also took a bit longer because I did a lot of the Abandoned Factory quests which, honestly if you don't need to grind is completely skippable. Hope switching modes makes the game more enjoyable for ya! :D

    • @askmiller
      @askmiller 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Super Derek Well I'm like 30 hours in and I just got past the Shadow Maya fight. I have no idea where that is in the game, but I feel like I'm taking forever to do things in this game. I'm only like level 30 or so, which should be an indication that I got a long way to go before the end, but I don't know.
      By maxing out vi and dx, you become a hard hitting magical tank, the problem is that you can't use physical abilities at all, which sucks in certain parts where you need to use physical abilities, but when that happens i just put Tatsuya on heal duty.

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      askmiller Awesome, then you're getting right into the good meat of the game's story, just power a little further and I think you'll start to enjoy the ride downhill a little more! One bit of advice though is to be sure you explore that cave really really well and open all of the treasure chests, you'll be glad you did later.

    The sad thing is that a remake of Persona 2 would probably not sell well nowadays. Things have changed too radically, I'm afraid, and so has this series.

    • @MagillanicaLouM
      @MagillanicaLouM 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree. 5 made the series more popular than ever so now is a perfect time. Just update the graphics, make the battle systmen a bit more convenient, get rid of the random encounters (because apparently modern rpg players are pussies) and I think people will love this game. I'm sure some will be dissapointed in the lack of a daily life system at first, but flowing through the game's already awesome story and characters will more than make up for that I feel.

  • @starline7228
    @starline7228 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The story of the game is great but what I hate about Persona 2 is the battle system of the game. It's about that super slow combat animation and tedious controls. If you want to heal all your team, it takes seconds to start and finish the animation and then heal one by one each takes a second to do. Same goes with other spells. And when your on your spell selection and you forgot the enemy elemental weakness, you can't simply press R to see it like persona 1 does. You have to press B to cancel all the way back and select analyze. Even if you skip animation, it still slow af. After I play persona 1 and play persona 2, I personally think thid is a downgraded combat system.

  • @tylerhansen931
    @tylerhansen931 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The 1st 2 persona games (counting IS and EP as 1 entry) suffer from shallow overworld mechanics and painfully slow and tedious combat system and menu navigation. Battles simply take too long to complete. Also acquiring personas is unintuitive and quite frankly a pain in the ass. Also IS's demon contract system is pure random bullshit that utterly ruins the whole thing.
    Essentially, there is a good reason why these games are ignored while 3, 4, and 5 aren't.

    • @GorditoCrunch343
      @GorditoCrunch343 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      80% of those points are applicable to a majority of turned-based JRPGS from that era. The contract system is a flaw but it's not a broken mechanic and can be circumvented through trial and error. The real draw of the games is the excellent story that is still probably Atlus' creative peak as far as game direction goes.
      The games weren't ignored when they were released in Japan, hitting high on the sales charts in 1999 and 2000. They were ignored because America didn't get IS at all, and EP was released here in very limited quantities, before Atlus was firmly established internationally.

      Ironically, P3 (as said by the new gen fans) was the reason persona was establish as a series in the west but in reality it was P2. P3 was the lowest selling mainline Persona game according to ATLUS.

    I've played through Persona 1, 3 times and loved it. however I couldn't force myself through the first few hours of this game, the battle system was so boring compared to persona 1. I don't know how this game is so loved among the fans, admittedly the plot seemed cool the battle system is so slow and repetitive

    • @Ralexand1988
      @Ralexand1988 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +CHAOS80120 you can turn animations off and set it to auto-battle. the battle system is not the best thing in this game, but tbh i never played it because of combat. c:

      +TheLightFarron They are great, but P2:IS worked better for me when comparing the stories (I played P2 after P3 and P4), and I hope P5 has more to it than yet another Social Link focused system. I mean, how lazy the Big Baddies are, when they take a whole school year to destroy the Earth?

      I can understand the sentiment. But for what it's worth, Personas 1 and 2 (IS & EP) did not feature randomly generated dungeons, and Personas 3 and 4 don't feature random encounters. :)
