    • @wat5058
      @wat5058 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Persona 3's the best game for your entry to the series. 5's actually quite lacking in content in comparison to 3/4, and feels quite rushed (along with having an easily predictable plot...seriously, no one I've talked to have been surprised by anything in the game except the final boss being revealed, and even then, that's 'cause it's completely out of nowhere). 4's plot, if you're really paying attention, is easy to predict - a cop talks to you about murders and clearly tries to lead you on. I woooooonder who the villain is? Whilst 4/5 give you the option to control your characters, 3 and onward weren't meant to be played while controlling every character - it just became an option 'cause a bunch of people complained that it wasn't one. And even then, the basic AI isn't half bad, provided you're playing with understanding of the combat system from the beginning, or can at least use the tactics menu with some decency, or at least realize that below a certain amount of health the AI will heal you.

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Avalanche Reviews Yeah, in the PSP version you have control over everyone, so you can pretty much heal whenever you want. P3 FES though... Well, for instance earlier I was fighting a boss, and was down to 2/3 hitpoints. Had had Yukari set as heal/support tactics, so when her turn rolled around, every time she was casting wind-break on all of the boss shadows rather than healing me. Incredibly frustrating, since another shadow was casting buff skills on the attacker in the group...
      Then again, maybe I just suck! xD

      @Retendo yeah there are certain things you can do to get characters to do what you want. for instance if an enemy is weak to fire and you go first, then junpei, if you weaken an enemy enough for junpei to kill it with a melee atack he will do a melee attack, but if you skip your turn he will put them all down with fire for an all out attack. that's just on act freely, so i'm sure you can control their actions much further when you fully understand all the different commands.

I have always seen the social aspect that is apart of Persona as cool, but, not something I would enjoy, even in a game as apart of the gameplay mechanic.

Mario games story never made sense, a giant turtle kidnapping a human princess in a mushroom world saved by a plumber, you never see anybody complain about it though. I don't get why some people start to whine about things and can't just accept them as they are, this is the definition of fantasy for me and I love it just the way it is. Nothing strange about us man, it's these people who are the strange ones.

    I was thinking of replaying Persona 3 on the expert difficulty then doing The Answer. The Answer seems to be the expert difficulty. One thing that makes it a pain in the ass is the boss placement. You have to climb several levels and then fight the boss with no save point in between. The bosses are already tough enough and makes it even more frustrating considering one would have to trek all the way back to fight it again.

Man If I did not have save states (I own the game physically so shush) persona 3 would have been more than a giant pain in the ass to play, and I only used save states sparingly.This game was no doubt flawed, but the flaws were fixed as far as I can tell in persona 4 (currently playing). This game does need a better rerelease that I would love to play even if the only change was being able to control all of the characters!.

    Persona 3 FES has a lot of interesting things, but I don't like how the game is way more into grinding rather than doing an actual exploration on an interesting place like Persona 5.
    There are things which I'd like to see brought in the next persona game though. Among these things are: the fusion spells, the fact that you fight the demons and not some ugly-ass shadows, keep the palaces interesting, more weapons for the protagonist and not so many elements. I mean you get 10 different kinds of attacks in P5 and 9 in P3 FES so yeah, I strongly believe they should stay at 9 elements and only 1 should be physical.
    Also, I wish Atlus didn't randomly switch the names of different items... Like in P5 it's called a Physical ointment, but in the previous persona games and Nocturne it's called Attack mirror. It really gets to me when they do that. Furthermore, I don't want to see dialogue options that have not meaning. Such as in P5 where you sometimes get a choice similar to the this:
    Op1: Let's go.
    Op2: We should get going.
    Like the fucks this choice? It's literally the exact same thing...

    Not playing this game is my biggest gaming regret.
    I completed Persona 4 Golden on the Vita and just loved it.
    I then bought Persona 1, 2 and 3 through the digital shop. Then, I made the mistake of trying to play Persona 1. It was so dated that I just couldn't get with it, specially after just playing Persona 4 Golden.
    I then decided it was time to play something else. In the back of my mind, I was saving Persona 3 on my Vita for a big trip or maybe a situation where I have to commute a lot. That never happened and so I never actually played it.
    I sold my Vita when I got a Switch. I thought Persona 3 is probably going to be available on the Switch at some point, or maybe I can download it on my PS4 at some point. WRONG!
    It's so frustrating that Persona 3 is not available by any means on current consoles.

    I hate the constant bitching about the "not controllable party members" aspect of P3 in nearly every review of the game. Not being able to control your party was fully intended by the makers, to give you a stronger sense of immersion. It gives you the feeling of having individuals with their own personality/mind fighting alongside you, while you project yourself into the main character. Yes, they f**** up sometimes, but i`d even go so far as to say that also was intended and giving the AI a certain aspect of human error. As you mentioned, you get strategy choices later on, which, even moreso, underlines my argument. Persona is all about bonds and as the bonds with your team grow you get more control over them, as it would be in real life. That also leads into another theme of the game (and is beeing underlined by your growing stratgic commands): Understanding each other. Direct control would just ruin so much of the impact the game has on the player and it`s message...
    The whole aspect really reminds me of another masterpiece of JRPG: Lunar 2. In Lunar 2 it was a deliberate choice not to give you control over Lucia, the second, if not most important character of the game. Lucia at first only fights for herself, but as the game progresses her AI becomes more and more a teamplayer. It`s the same thing in P3, but on a larger scale.

      +DesMondesBlut Fair point, but it's not enjoyable to die because you're team fucked up. The player doesn't like being punished for something almost completely out of their control. And the only real way to prevent such as situation is to overlevel up the rest of your party to the point where if they do mess up then nothing too bad occurs. However, that makes the rest of the game much more boring as there is no remaining challenge. I think giving you control of your party members but giving you the option to play like how it was in P3 is was a smart move by atlus as to appease both groups of people

    • @fynchan11
      @fynchan11 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I totally agree with you. Creators made this to be close to reality. Honestly I see this whole "not controlling party members" as a good thing. Same with dying in the battle, sorry but it's how it supposed to be! You fight with enemy for example on battle field and someone shoots you = you die, simply as that. No one magicly turns your endurance up so stop bitching about that already. It only makes people into whiny spoiled brats. Plus whole aspect of the game is about accepting death and learning to deal with this.

      It`s not about being a fanboy or not. Not being able to control your party directly but through indirect strategy is just much more realistic. You wouldn`t shout to your teammates "use maragi now" or "mediarmama!" evertime something needs to be done and your teammates wouldn`t patiently wait for your command before doing anything. Instead you give indirect strategic commands... That would happen in any real life situatuion, so stop arguing giving direct commands would be more realistic in terms of plot.

    Based on what you said about the save system, this game might be one to play on an emulator. I know using save states sort of takes you away from the console experience a bit but in this case it would alleviate a lot of the frustration of losing game time and progress.
    It's too bad this game didn't have the same system of issuing commands to all party members like in Persona 4, otherwise it could have been the superior of the two games. Many people seem to like the story and darker theme/atmosphere of this game.

      madcapper6 Persona 3 Portable allows you to control the party members and also has a female main character, whose story line is slightly different. However, it has no anime cutscenes, no 3D characters and environment except in Tarturus, and doesn't have "The Answer".

    Persona 3 and hitting 3k subscribers, coincidence? ;) Haha, congratulations on the channel milestone! I really enjoyed this game from start to finish. I completely understand your feelings about the "deadly sins" the game commits. I really didn't like not being in full control of the party, but it does add challenge. I did also have issues with the main character dying meaning game over. I went into battles a number of times with the wrong Persona equipped and was taken out because the enemy had the advantage. Even still, despite this issue, I think it's a great game. I can't wait to see your conclusion next time! :)

      RPGtourguide Yeah, and it's even worse in The Answer so far. I've gone in to battle a boss, perfectly leveled and everything with the right persona, only to have one of the bosses dodge my attack, and take me out immediately after that. It's brutal. And thanks! :)

    In “Persona 3 Portable” you can control your WHOLE party like in “Persona’s 4&5”. This is why I feel “Persona 3 Portable” is the best version of Persona 3, especially for newcomers. You do lose the animated cut scenes but the visual novel replacements look great. I also love the story and characters in “Persona 3” also. I would LOVE to see “P3P” get ported to the Nintendo Switch along with “Persona 4 Golden”!

    actually, the answer takes more than 30 hours to complete just because the time you spend level and persona grinding will make it go around an extra 10 to 20 hours or so. Also the definitive version is Persona 3 FES due to it holding the true ending to Persona 3 as well as adding to the fact that the female protagonist in persona 3 portable was not a cannon character and "is not a character just for female players, but more for veterans of persona 3 and persona 3 fes"~Persona 3 Portable, 2010.

      mmomario12 Yeah, I just finished The Answer, and ended up with a save file saying I spent 29:10 playing the game, but for all the times I've died and lost progress, and had to try again, I'd say it's easily 35-40 hours of total gameplay.

    Nice review! I love seeing a reviewer who puts the time into discussing plot/character development in RPGs. I feel like these aspects get tossed by the wayside in many RPG reviews.
    How do you decide when to put live action, in front of the camera, portions in your reviews? Does it come down to time constraints? Personally, I think getting in front of the camera for reviews (especially when the game is an RPG) gives an important personal connection with the viewer. Just saying, I like the reviews where you talk in front of the camera best. Just one guys opinion!

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zero Counts Oh definitely! I like to do little things to each video I shoot in order to try to help them stand out and keep myself trying new things. These illustrations are just for Persona games, I made them to try to emulate the style I loved from when I played P3 and P4 a few years back.
      And thanks! I do love some battle systems, but if the plot and characters aren't interesting to me, I eventually lose steam. I also make a point of beating each game before starting the review too, because even good books with bad endings deserve to have points docked. :)

    Persona 3 in my PS2 was my first Persona game. I think I tried another Shin Megami Tensei game before that, but I didn't like that one for some reason, so I started P3 with a little apprehension. But I did like it a lot! Then P4 came almost right after it and I loved it even more. Unfortunately they stopped making Personas until recently, I don't want EA's yearly game flood, but you know, it's now 6 years after P4 was released!

      Personally, yeah I would go with the FES release because exploring the school and town in 3D is kind of important to me. If you don't mind that point-and-click style of gameplay outside of the main dungeon and combat, then P3 Portable would be the way to go because it grants you control over the entire party. Hopefully Atlus will port an updated version of this game to Steam or something and make the choice easier.

    I haven't played Persona since Revelations on the PS1, and I've wanted to get back into the series due to all the hype these games get, but this review is kinda discouraging. Monotonous 250+ level dungeon that takes 90 hour to complete, and unforgiving battles.. does the story and game play really make up for those glaring issues? Excellent video by the way.

      The Game Grinder This game isn't too grind heavy and there are quests that help give the few grindy moments some flavor. I am a huge fan of the randomly generated dungeons ala nethack, and the mystery dungeon series, but something about tartarus was repetitive and dull.
      Having said that you really don't spend a lot of time in tartarus, for about every hour I spent there I would spend about 2 hours doing something else.
      I would rate this game up there with some of my favorite jrpgs but my god I would be lying if I said I didn't want it to just end at points.
      If the art style/music/story/fusions appeal to you I'd suggest at least trying it because despite its short comings it really does give some awesome experiences in return.

      I`d disagree, i played and completed P3, P3 FES and (only recently) P3 Portable and the PSP version definitely lacks in atmosphere. The removal of the 3D exploration AND 3D ingame engine cutscenes takes away most of the emotional impact, resulting in a bit "sterile" experience. The direct party control makes the game ridicuously easy and Tartarus feels much less threatening almost to the degree of being a joke. I`d still suggest to play the PSP game after having beaten FES, but only for the female MC... I won`t play the PSP version again though.

    I am afraid I have to disagree. I was actually surprised most of the time (except Mitsuru's flaw of casting charm spells almost every second turn) how well the AI held up. I felt most of the time that I was with a team working together in battle. And for a game in 2006, that was no mean feat.
    The deadly sins listed got it half right, it wasn't only because you could die and instant death was always a possibility that was frustrating: It was that the game over screen was unskippable and you had to wait a significant amount of time before reloading.... ruining the flow. I hate that preachy game over screen to this day.

  • @bradcook1537

    My biggest problem with Persona 3 FES, P3P, and P4 is that I often ignored the dungeon crawling in favor of the sim gameplay. I often had to start over at key points and replay the game. P4 helped with this though with it's deadlines. P3 just left the responsibility up to you, and for me, I was failing at it pretty horrendously. But it's also because I really don't like dungeon crawling in games.
    And that's my problem with P3P, it became point and click and killed the immersion for me.
    Good luck with the Answer, iirc it's mostly a dungeon crawler with big boss fights.

      No no not all at one time. You're given one entire in-game year to get through it. Tartarus is the only dungeon in the entire game but each floor is different everytime u go back in and the theme changes every 10 or 20 floors. There are teleport pads every 10 floors so u can go in, do as many floors as u want, and teleport back out. Then the next day u go back and start where u left off the last time.

    I didn't find the game all that hard
    Other than not controlling party members (though you could adjust their tactics), almost every challenge could be overcome by creating the right persona or making a setup for it.
    I only ever played this game on Hard and even Nyx wasn't that bad (and only took one try with 2 close calls) at Level 70. I think the most RNG I encountered with a boss was the three birds at the start merely because one miss could usually spell a game over that early in on Hard Mode. But afterwards it wasn't really all that bad (for me at least)

    After finishing P5R, and being a JRPG fan for 25-30 years, I really wanted to play some older Persona's. I beat either the first or second "back in the day" but can't remember wish...anyway, thanks for saving me the gut punch of P3. Hard pass.

      Persona 3 FES was the first Persona or SMT game I played and I absolutely loved it. The game gives off a feeling unlike others.

      Diego Banega Oh I know! And the whole Game Plus mode? I would love to blast through it again and worry less about hitting so many social links, but I think even if you blasted past the dungeon sections, you're still looking at another 40 hours at least! Maybe when I'm old and grey, and forget how long the game is I'll give it another run through... Or maybe if Atlus decides to make an HD rerelease.

    suikoden was the only game that have you an option at one point, and if you choose the wrong answer multiple times you got a very depressing broken game .

    I like P3 but fact that you cannot control your party really ruined fun sometimes...

      I love P3 and even I can see the faults. Your treating it like people haven’t been complaining about it’s faults
