Dude if you look at your other persona 2 vid. i comments how i cant wait to see this video.... literally an hr later this video comes out. what in the world was that coincidence lol
something important about tatsuya that i've never seen discussed before is the importance of perspective. in IS, he was shown to be very cool, popular, and mature. now in EP, tatsuya is portrayed very differently. he is shown to be confused, unsure of himself, curious, and overall child like. this is due to the fact that we're now looking through maya's perspective. now that we aren't in the perspective of tatsuya, we aren't shown how he views himself, rather how he portrays himself, his persona.
It’s also why katsuya is drastically different. In IS he comes of as a complete douche and a hard ass. But in EP he’s actually a lovable dork who’s always trying to help people. Tatsuya views his brother as a scum bag so when we see the world through his perspective that’s all we see. But when you see it from mayas it’s clear tatsuya has a warped perspective of his brother.
@@Neogears1312 you're not wrong that a change in perspective has allowed us to see more, but what a lot of people tend to overlook is that who these characters are in EP is noticeably different than in IS. In IS for example, Tatsuya suffered from being stabbed as a kid, losing his friends (suppressing memories), having his reputation altered by rumors and even using his persona accidentally to hurt others trying to hurt him. That hardened him and likely distanced him from his brother, parents, and everyone severely, likely leading to more friction between him and Katsuya. In EP, none of that happened, resulting in less negativity between them, and more regular teen angst (plus their issue of their father's rep taking center stage).
@@demonbye19 that's true of the Tatsuya from innocent sin, who then inhabits the body of the Tatsuya from eternal punishment. He remembers everything, but then, when he leaves, we're left with the Tatsuya of the EP reality, who never made the friends or lived the trauma of the original, and only really hung out with Anna and worked on his bike, and maybe dealt with living under the broken reputation of his father, and a brother who was likely less worried about him than the original innocent sin version of Katsuya was (even if the EP version still worried for other reasons).
So, who here's hoping for the impossible and wanting these games ported to modern consoles? Maybe have all 3 PS1 Persona games in one as a "Persona Classics Collection"?

The additional PSP scenario is a wonderful addition to the story that really adds to Tatsuya's tragedy and fleshes out the Lovercraftian elements to the story. Hopefully you get around to it whenever the fan translation comes out. I'd say that the "weakness" of the cast as a group makes a bit more sense, because it is harder for adults to form immediate bonds like kids/teens are able to, so they are more distant between one another while they size each other up.
As adults they are independant individuals with a responsability, they sure learned a lot from eachother but dont expect a chemistry like the prior P2 had, hell even P2 IS cast had known eachother since childhood even if they were masked.
Loved the video, but I am a little disappointed you didn’t mention the Persona 1 cast reunion at the end of the game, something that I loved, showing how the original cast ended up, also the bad ending of the game where Lisa and Eikichi remember everything, but have to keep it from Jun, or the good ending where the IS cast (aside from Tatsuya) reunites, but feels sense of sadness for reasons beyond their understandings.
I believe that reunion scene features everyone except the protagonist (who's implied to arrive at the very end of the scene, but we don't get to see him), masao (who's studying overseas according to the wiki) and yuka (who has no reason given for being absent)
19:15 Personally I think that Maya forgiving Ulala fits well from a story angle and Maya as a character because it is indicating that Maya is pretty much like a mother in the game. Forgiving someone is part of the positive nature which is one of Maya's personally trait while a person that does not forgive someone is part of the negative nature and this goes to show that Maya is still in her positive mindset and turns away from anything negative such as her shadow we later see in the game of Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment.
besides that Maya seems to have an issue to deal with negative emotions (as such stereotype of people exist too) so she rather glances over them and tries to "be happy and stay positive", which is perhaps one remarkable bittersweet character treat.
I found it weird that he thought Maya wouldn't simply forgive Ulala. If she could forgive the brats and said those words near the end of IS, she could forgive her friend who obviously tried to make amends.

21:00 japanese as a second language education was a big thing in taiwan for decades, so at the time of the game's release, a taiwanese professional fluent in japanese wouldn't be all that weird
I finished EP less than two weeks ago and definitely my biggest gripe with the game was the main cast outside of Tatsuya and Maya. Every time it felt like one of them was having "their big moment" they would get cut short and the scene felt unresolved. I remember specifically after the Abandoned Factory when you learn about Baofu's past, the truth is left very vague and inconclusive, but then I just so happen to talk to Katsuya in the Velvet Room and he finally just says it plainly, clearing up the confusion. I like the idea behind all three of them but somehow Eriko (whose route I chose) ended up being my favorite new party member, despite not even playing P1. Also Maya shouldn't have been silent :( It just doesn't work going from voiced to silent, especially not for such a pleasant character to listen to as Maya.
Even though i like ulala alot i think the reason the new members dont get alot of time to shine is because compared to innocent sin all the party gets like one dungeon about them gold for ulala factory for baofu and aoba park for katsuya whereas everyone except from yukino in innocent sin got multiple dungeons for their arc.
I've been waiting for the EP retrospective! I love what you did with these videos. I already wanted to play through the classic Persona games, but now I want to play them even more!
Been looking forward to this for a while! EP is probably my 2nd favourite game of all time, so I'm glad to see at least one video get to the meat of it.
That scene outside of the train station. Hey does everyone feel like we all know each other? You just get a bunch of "yeah" In the background you just hear Philemon sigh while narlithotep is laughing
Really glad other people are learning about Persona 2. As someone who enjoyed playing obscure RPGs as a kid, I'm really glad this one in particular is standing out more and more.
A true RPG Classic I haven't played for years! I remember spending countless hours in collecting Tarot Cards, getting new Personas from the Velvet Room, leveling them up, you name it. I think I will start my PS 2 Emulator and play it again... just to enjoy the music I have in the Velvet Room :)
Personally, I would like to see Persona 6 with a college aged cast. Maybe it's because I've just recently became an adult, but I want to see more games that target adult issues. Though SMT Mainline already covers that well enough. To a certain extent, ignoring Apocalypse
@@mannysmith5397 i checked again, and i think its because i took Nanjo as a party member and the Eikichi route rather than Lisa/Hellen route so Eikichi is the one to remember.
Honestly, it would be nice if we could have an Adult cast. Since we have seen how shity Adults can be in Persona 5, feels like it's time to see the Adults side of things in that entire matter, or at least another aspect.
Great analysis once again! And honestly, the Nanjo route was the more interesting one, but I'm curious what you would think of the Elly route if you ever revisit it. I definitely appreciate the replay value in those routes, and dialogue choices towards the end changing the ending scene where Eikichi, Jun and Lisa meetup
Interesting to see your thoughts on the characters. I for one absolutely despised Baofu until the final dungeon. Every time he said something I would roll my eyes and think "stfu you annoying edgelord". When it comes to Ulala I didn't find strange at all that Maya forgave her almost immediately, and if you take the time to talk to the party in random locations you can see how much Ulala still regrets what she's done. Katsuya is absolutely husbando. Tatsuya is Tatsuya. Overall if it weren't for Baofu this might've been my overall favorite cast in the whole series. Still, EP is my favorite SMT game and Maya is my absolute favorite protagonist
Eternal Punishment? More like Eternal - uh Eternally Underrated! ... Y'know, cause this channel is - It's got less subs than it should - ... Nevermind, I'll see myself out.
I actually really like Ulala. I think her cursing Maya is something we all have done in some compacity when we're mad or jealous at someone we care about. Just in her case it actually came true.
Persona 2 duology: among the deepest storylines in any jrpg. And yes, EP is far more challenging than IS. Mature characters and all, this game deserves more recognition. A future remake perhaps, or a spin-off or something, similar to other Persona games?... There was also the anime series that was cancelled - sadly. It'd be great to see Maya and co. once again! You really get attached to the characters, by playing these 2 games to the end.
Finally someone who experienced the same in boss fights. Every boss was unique and hard. Especially the jokers, because full-mage maya killed my party when affected by the old maid. Very nice work. Thanks!
41:02 this didn't aged well because on the fan translation of EP the difficulty is high as the ps1 version and the slice of life mechanics added is great + the customizable color scheme
As an absolute fan of the Persona 2 duology, I really liked you're reviews of the games, and the complaints, even if I disagreed sound reasonable. Great video!
As always i must like and comment to boost the algorithm. Unfortunately i still have not played persona 2 so i cannot watch the video. I'm sure the video is a banger though, as always :)
I came into these person 2 videos as a persona 3, 4, and 5 player. Omg have I been missing out. Atlus/Sega have been showing interest in porting old games to steam. I would love it if they ported the first three games (persona one, IN, and EP)
Bruh Persona 5 was my first experience on my SMT journey and I loved it so much that I bought a PsVita and bought persona 1-4 on it and on my 2ds I bought SMT 4( and probably going to buy Overclocked, strange journey, hackers, and apocalypse) but currently I’m going through persona 4 golden and P3P and my favorite game of all time was Persona 5 Royal and then I played P4G and that was my favorite but god I’m playing through P3P and its the best thing I’ve ever played ever and I haven’t beat it yet💀 but this series is the world to me.
Adults may be harder to characterized imo. Some things may not fly such as childish naiveté, quicker connections and bonds formed, and overreaction to events that occur. That is not to say that everyone is 100% mature, but compared to our younger selves, we are. A duology works better with story telling starting with a teen student cast and a time skip, showing how the passing of time has impacted them. Due to the events of IS, they could not use the entire original cast in EP as it would not connect as well. EP showed that an adult cast gives a different perspective, but may not be as connected of a cast with each other. They feel more like coworkers than friends, once the job finished, everyone kind of went their own way. Still would be a fun experience to have a Persona game lead to older characters with diverging paths based on choices made early on, I think the it would be similar to mainline SMT's different endings.
Eternal Punishment is *still* my favorite Persona game to this day. Haven't played mine since it came out on PS1, but I plan to re-play it on Vita after I finally play Innocent Sin (which is still on my backlog). Thankfully, I have Innocent Sin physically for PSP, & also digitally on my Vita TV. All these years later, I intend to play both, to see the tale in its entirety on my PSTV.
Something really cool about EP is fortune telling, get a yellow dragon and you get double exp for some time. And that time is enough to beat the dungeons and the bosses, getting huge amounts of exp.
I'm itching to watch this video (bc the ones you did on 3 and 4 were just brilliant) as well as itching to play 2. What would be the best way to play these games? Emulating PSP for both? PSX?
There is no fan translation for Eternal Punishment PSP as of yet, so you're stuck with the PSX version for that game. In my opinion, the PSX version is more than playable, so you'll be fine with that version. In terms of Innocent Sin, I think that the PSP version is far too easy and brainless to be engaging. As far as I'm aware, the PSX version of the game isn't that much harder, so I'd say to play that version just to stay consistent (You'll need to use the fan translation patch if you plan on playing the PSX version of Innocent Sin) The PSP version has the option to turn off battle animations so you can speed through battles, so that's a plus. It's really up to which version sounds more enjoyable to you.
After watching both videos on the P2 Duology. I badly need like a remastered port to modern consoles and Quality of Life changes that improve the gameplay. P2 IS and EP have stories to tell and its friggin' holds up much like the modern Persona games. Apart from that this is the only time I can get to play as another Female Protagonist outside of P3P and heck much like Kotone I relate and resonate with Maya (But I agree on your points about having her as a silent FeMC in EP) It pains me that Atlus doesn't give the Duology more recognition it absolutely deserves and I see that now thanks to your videos. Cheers!
the best persona story ever. this is pretty sad. also the only thing that doesnt make sense is Atlus not remaking the Persona EP with the psp like IS. man i wish nyarly would make an appearance again in future persona games.
I rented this game back in the day on a whim as the case always made it look like an interesting RPG. I passed on it 4 or 5 times and then finally rented it. Joker rumour portion in the beginning blew my mind and sadly still need to pick the game up. Sigh.
Since you enjoyed the gameplay of this game much more than Innocent Sin, how well do you think it holds up to the modern Persona games and to the mainline Shin Megami Tensei games?
I just beat the game tonight and immediately watched this video as soon as the credits were done. I agree with your points that I like the cast of IS more, but I think the story of EP is better. I hope more people will be able to enjoy these two games.

I'd say its my 3rd Favorite in the series cause Persona 3 and 5 I enjoy more from a gameplay perspective personally lol
21:00 japanese as a second language education was a big thing in taiwan for decades, so at the time of the game's release, a taiwanese professional fluent in japanese wouldn't be all that weird
Yeah, it’s the nuances like that which don’t translate well outside of the main continent of release
You just get a bunch of "yeah"
In the background you just hear Philemon sigh while narlithotep is laughing
Really glad other people are learning about Persona 2. As someone who enjoyed playing obscure RPGs as a kid, I'm really glad this one in particular is standing out more and more.
A true RPG Classic I haven't played for years! I remember spending countless hours in collecting Tarot Cards, getting new Personas from the Velvet Room, leveling them up, you name it. I think I will start my PS 2 Emulator and play it again... just to enjoy the music I have in the Velvet Room :)
The PSP version of Eternal Punishment is still super difficult, and completely unchanged, unlike IS PSP.
any update on the status on the translation btw? last i saw was months ago
@@rook8172 he's still working on it
Personally, I would like to see Persona 6 with a college aged cast. Maybe it's because I've just recently became an adult, but I want to see more games that target adult issues.
Though SMT Mainline already covers that well enough. To a certain extent, ignoring Apocalypse
I'm currently fully diving into the Persona- and SMT-Universe and having a blast!
Everyone forgets that Lisa also ended up remembering, even the game. Ekichi and Jun are the only ones who didn't
I thought its Eikichi who knows whats going on? Like in the end of the game where he, Lisa and Jun meet at the shrine.
@@ahmedbenkhalfallah6502 Nah, it's Lisa. She even asks to go with Tatsuya, but Philemon says not to.
@@mannysmith5397 i checked again, and i think its because i took Nanjo as a party member and the Eikichi route rather than Lisa/Hellen route so Eikichi is the one to remember.
It depends on your choices in the final dungeon, if you make the correct choices nobody remembers
Honestly, it would be nice if we could have an Adult cast. Since we have seen how shity Adults can be in Persona 5, feels like it's time to see the Adults side of things in that entire matter, or at least another aspect.
I've been waiting for this!
Oof, you did that joke before me
Great analysis once again!
There's an ongoing fan translation for the PSP port of EP, it's been having technical difficulties unfortunately, but at least it's not dead
"I've been waiting for this!"
I waited for this!! Thank you for all the time you put into these videos!
Eternal Punishment?
More like Eternal -
uh
Eternally Underrated!
...
Y'know, cause this channel is -
It's got less subs than it should -
...
Nevermind, I'll see myself out.
this is why the little easter egg on persona 3 hermit arcana hits hard on that online game you as tatsuya and her as maya man i want to cry
I think Atlus should've bundled the Persona 2 Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment (In English, obviously) remasters together on PS Vita
Vita is dead so probably for PC PS5 or Switch
Yesssssssss been waiting for this
Great vid! Def will jump into this once someone makes a translation 👌🏾
Honestly, the idea that the main protagonist of the previous game fucked up soo bad post-ending and trying to fix it is such an interesting idea
Thanks for the video good sir , because I have not played eternal punishment yet I can't watch this. But I shall be back
Ok I'm back
A long nam video is pretty pog
this probably the most clever way to introduce a "royal" or a "golden" version of the same game. i wish more games do this.
I beat the game about a month ago and loved it. Thanks for making this video!!
I actually really like Ulala. I think her cursing Maya is something we all have done in some compacity when we're mad or jealous at someone we care about. Just in her case it actually came true.
Never have i clicked on a video so fast, also what happened to Namtoomanynumbers.
Stayed in the late 2000's where he belongs

@@leschnozzberry same , bro I instantly click when I saw video on recommendation
I definitely agree with that list of Persona games, especially Persona 3 FES being the most trouble. I also could suck at the games, but still.
I’ve been waiting for this since friday
Man, Persona 2 is something special. Definitely didn't expect it to be as good as it is.
So Persona 3, 4, and 5 take place in the Eternal Punishment timeline?
Yes basically
I have been wanting for this!
Finally someone who experienced the same in boss fights. Every boss was unique and hard. Especially the jokers, because full-mage maya killed my party when affected by the old maid. Very nice work. Thanks!
41:02
this didn't aged well because on the fan translation of EP the difficulty is high as the ps1 version and the slice of life mechanics added is great + the customizable color scheme
As an absolute fan of the Persona 2 duology, I really liked you're reviews of the games, and the complaints, even if I disagreed sound reasonable. Great video!
Was just going through the series of videos, what a coincidence this was recently posted!
Hopefully we get a remake of both games as one with extra goodies
Been waiting on this!! Let's goooo
I've been waiting for this
Good to see nyarly is back on his medication
As always i must like and comment to boost the algorithm. Unfortunately i still have not played persona 2 so i cannot watch the video. I'm sure the video is a banger though, as always :)
Hey rillic
@@Deus_XG Hello webes
I came into these person 2 videos as a persona 3, 4, and 5 player. Omg have I been missing out. Atlus/Sega have been showing interest in porting old games to steam. I would love it if they ported the first three games (persona one, IN, and EP)
The wait is over bois
Will you not release these so fast, I didn't finish this game yet....
So the tatsuya from IS had to go back to his world? So are the main characters from IS all still in their destroyed original universe or am i wrong.
9:12 EP has the option to turn on simple battle animations too?
Yes
I'm so excited to finish Innocent Sin so I can get to Eternal Punishment
Guys you don’t need a ps1 to play eternal punishment you can also buy it on the psvita along with persona 1, innocent sin, 3(psp version) and 4
Adults may be harder to characterized imo.
An Amazing video like always
I dunno what it is about your Persona videos but I find them enjoyable even though I've never bothered playing Persona myself.
What mic do you use, ur audio is very good
I use a Rode NT USB microphone. I do other things as well to make it sound better, but that's the microphone I use.
Banger as always
*I never clicked so fast than any recommendations video*
Because, Persona 2 is closed to my heart, after SMT Persona 4 (PS2 version)
I wish we could eventually go back to the "Other Side" to save Tatsuya. Must be lonely over there.
Great video
Eternal Punishment is *still* my favorite Persona game to this day. Haven't played mine since it came out on PS1, but I plan to re-play it on Vita after I finally play Innocent Sin (which is still on my backlog). Thankfully, I have Innocent Sin physically for PSP, & also digitally on my Vita TV. All these years later, I intend to play both, to see the tale in its entirety on my PSTV.
So, what's next homie?
Something really cool about EP is fortune telling, get a yellow dragon and you get double exp for some time. And that time is enough to beat the dungeons and the bosses, getting huge amounts of exp.
Most underrated game in history
Yes let’s go!!!
Is The persona 2 duology good to start the series on? If not, what game should I start with?
After watching both videos on the P2 Duology. I badly need like a remastered port to modern consoles and Quality of Life changes that improve the gameplay. P2 IS and EP have stories to tell and its friggin' holds up much like the modern Persona games. Apart from that this is the only time I can get to play as another Female Protagonist outside of P3P and heck much like Kotone I relate and resonate with Maya (But I agree on your points about having her as a silent FeMC in EP)
It pains me that Atlus doesn't give the Duology more recognition it absolutely deserves and I see that now thanks to your videos. Cheers!
the best persona story ever. this is pretty sad. also the only thing that doesnt make sense is Atlus not remaking the Persona EP with the psp like IS.
man i wish nyarly would make an appearance again in future persona games.
they did, it was only in Japanese. now there is a translation by fans
But now there is a fan translation, oh yeah baby!!!!!!!
I rented this game back in the day on a whim as the case always made it look like an interesting RPG. I passed on it 4 or 5 times and then finally rented it. Joker rumour portion in the beginning blew my mind and sadly still need to pick the game up. Sigh.
Psp translation is out bois
Since you enjoyed the gameplay of this game much more than Innocent Sin, how well do you think it holds up to the modern Persona games and to the mainline Shin Megami Tensei games?
I just beat the game tonight and immediately watched this video as soon as the credits were done. I agree with your points that I like the cast of IS more, but I think the story of EP is better. I hope more people will be able to enjoy these two games.
