  • Looks like an outdated version of Runescape, plays like a dream. A classic game from my childhood and a criminally underrated gem, Guardian's Crusade stands out from the crowd with unique gameplay, a surprisingly touching story, and a comical, charming world to explore. Look past the jagged polygons, and you might find a new fav.

We had this game when I was little too, it's crazy to see it, because I hadn't seen game play of this game since that time! I never got far on that game myself, but I enjoyed it the little I did play it. I grew up with 3 brothers so I never really could get far on single player games on console.

Growing up I never was able to purchase a PS2 so I distinctly remember a good chunk of my childhood playing this and Digimon World. I even remember being nine years old and beating this game, then making a huge drawing of all the characters and hanging it up in my room. The music honestly still tugs at my heartstrings with how upbeat and sincere it was, just like the whole game.

I remember seeing this game in a gaming magazine as a child, but I never actually played it until recently.
Was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. In particular, I kinda like how for most of the game, Knight and Baby were relatively small players in the plot. You had Darkbeat trying to get revenge against Karmine and his cult and you had Kalkanor and his party going around collecting the magical mcguffins needed to stop the villain only for everything to blow up in his face. For most of the game, both Darkbeat and Kalkanor were one step ahead of you and it isn't until near the end of the game where both Knight and Baby were able to step up to the plate once the other two got their asses handed to them.
I also love how the game really pushes you to train and nurture Baby. I ended up learning the hard way what happened if you didn't train him and feed him a lot. And that made the whole experience that much more engaging and rewarding.
Knight and Nehani were also great in their own way. Despite being a silent protagonist, I really enjoy how he's characterized as a bit of a goober through Nehani who constantly nags at him not to do things like raiding people's drawers, how he should keep his own place clean and add new stuff to his home and how he does the weirdest things like mistake his own reflection for a person trapped inside a gem or creepily staring at a couple for five minutes. It's a very charming way of making a silent protagonist.
It's honestly a great game and I'm shocked I never played it until now.

I’m so excited to see a proper review of this game! I saw a segment in some gaming magazine circa 1998/9 on it that had a section walkthrough of the cave of fear. It looked so charming and neat that I actually bought the game outright. I’m so glad I did, and this game could totally use a HD remaster.
It could also be pointed out that there’s neat touches: as knight levels up, the number of attacks he makes for his basic attack increases, the traveling merchant Bonik upgrades his inventory, and dialogue changes in the various towns depending on where you are in the story.

I came across your channel again for some reason I was thinking about Zelda Majora's Mask and I remembered years ago I watched your video analysis on it and man you had me thinking a lot about that installment in the Zelda franchise.
My favorite Zelda will always be Zelda OoT but I played them games when I was younger so I didn't have the mental ability to break down those games from a deeper perspective but now as an adult to understand the stories more I never look at games the same as I once did as a child.
Thank you for those Legendary videos that changed my view on games we played as children.

This was my first playstation RPG, actually. This game had a huge impact on me. It was really the game that got me into deeper, more mature RPGs. Even at 11 years old the emotional aspects of the game really spoke to me. The journey itself was really well done, with bosses that mop the floor with you in early fights that you later come to overpower. So many memories.. It's crazy that this was 21 years ago.

I remember there was a codebreaker code back in day where it force Baby to transform into any monster during the battle with the proper hex decimal code (xx) to match the base code . So I was able to have Darkbeat on my team, it's was pretty cool because there wasn't a baby model for Darkbeat so it would load the actual Darkbeat from the uncontrollable fights.

Literally just found your channel due to that Digimon World thing that jumped into my recommendations from literally nowhere and I'm staying for this. This game definitely looks like something I would enjoy now that I can see a game beyond its graphics (although as a kid and a teen I still had some passion for pixels and low poly, I guess cuz I grew up with a GBC and two games for it). I played it again maybe ten years ago and got halfway and now I've downloaded it again and got through the first section this evening. Really great to see the overwhelming amount of people commenting profoundly fond memories with this game

The amount of hours I sunk in this game as a kid. We even burned a copy cuz ours was scratched and used the start up swap to get it to work.

My friend and I loved this game so much. We would play each other's save files together when we were at our houses! Did absolutely everything in this game including getting the prototype living toy and finding I believe every secret event. I'm not even sure why I liked it so much, but something really does make it charming

I remembered it wrong then. The final toy, the one its ghost creator gives to you after finding the rest of them, I remember it to be the "legend" toy.

Recently finished playing the re-release of Chrono Cross, and was left wanting to play other games from that era of my childhood.
Pretty sure Guardian's Crusade was the first game I ever beat.
Just left Trisken and the game is just as wonderful as I remember it.
It's so nice seeing at least someone on youtube give it a little love. Hopefully this video inspires people to pick it up for the first time.
    Great review!

Thank you! It's one of my absolute favs. So glad my dad let me get it as a kid. I mainly picked it up because you could raise a monster and I was super into pokemon at the time. It opened up the whole new world of JRPGs to me as a child. I played FF9 a bit later and my fate was sealed lol. Love these games~

Wow this really reminds of the Wii Jrpg Opoona in a way(another really creative cute beginner friendly jrpg that doesn’t get enough love imo), With the zany enemies, unusual groovy music, and fun quirky gameplay mechanics. I’ll definitely have to give this a go sometime soon. Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention!

This game is one of the best rpg I played when I was still a child. I was a little annoyed when no one knows this game when I was still a child. It game is still a really good game until now.

    Alright alright I'm getting it.
    It looks really fun.
I'll edit this comment when I finish it for all zero people that will know.
EDIT: I finished the game! I did it in about two very very long sittings because I was having tons of fun.
It's a great game, with good writing and a surprising amount of subversive themes, like other main characters essentially playing their own generic fantasy games.
The game is pretty easy aside a couple of weird spikes mostly due to the insane amount of options the toys provide.
Chester is my favourite video game character now.
The more the game opens up, the more fun it gets with what you can do, and the world is never so big that it's hard to navigate.
Amazing recommendation, and immediately one of my top ten or twenty favourite games.
Not many will know that my comment morally obligated me to do this and turned out fantastic.
But I'll know. That's what matters.

I'm a bit of the way into it now and having a really good time.
The Baby mechanics are very weird and a little underexplained even in the manual, but if you feed him basically everything you own including your weapons and armour he gets huge fast.
My favourite toy so far is Viper, that Paralysis is amazing.

I remember when I was little and there was an add for it in a magazine. Always wanted to play it. Instead I wrote a short story based off the art about what I thought it might have been about. Glad to find out it was actually pretty good.

I remember, after getting all the toys, you get the "legend" toy from the house of its creator. I believe its ghost gives it to you. A super powerful toy.

I rented this a few times from Family Video and it was easily one of the best RPGs I'd played at the time. I still have some fond memories, even if they're a little fuzzy. There are so many toys to collect in that game it was unreal.
