That helped me so much, home built cub now has safe mode! For me, I set it on it's nose but got orientation 5, which confused me for a few till I realized that it was referring to the orientation of the receiver and how it was mounted in my plane. It was fine, I just mounted my receiver in a different orientation than you did. Thanks so much, now I can fly it finally!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! First off, God Bless You Sir! After watching Skektrum and other videos and attempting many times over to get the AS3X working I came across your video. NOT ONE OTHER PERSON MENTIONED THE THROTTLE HAD TO BE PUT OVER 25% FOR THE AS3X TO WORK! I've been flying for many years and I'm a Spektrum guy but fairly new to AS3X receivers. Hey Fat Guy, thank you for this video. I'm an old Futaba person that went to Taranis and OpenTx. I've outgrown them both and found my way to a Spektrum NX8 and an AR630. This video provided the stepping stone and the system was installed in my PNP eFlite T-28 1.1m. I followed your video to the tee and maidened my NX8 this morning with zero issues and just a couple of trim changes. Thanks again.
Awesome job my friend, I have used this method on 2 airplane's with great success your time involved is greatly appreciated. Shanon Rc OutLaw PEACE ✌️ ☮️
Thank you sir! This is the most straight forward and understandable step-by-step tutorial I have EVER seen on how to add AS3X to my non E-flite (FMS & Motion RC) planes. I’ll confidently and economically install a simple AR-630 to every non E-flite plane I own. Your 20-minute video is more succinct and informative than anyone out there. God bless you! 😎👍🏼 You have a fan and new subscriber!
I will tell you exactly what happened. First, I used a 6s 3700 mAh batery on my 60 inches plane to make the basic set up of the moving surfaces, control throws, engine, etc., and everthing went perfectly. Then, for security reasons, (big prop on the nose), I decided to unplug this big battery and to use a 2s small lipo battery in order to work with the forward programming. I studied your video first because since several years I have not installed another AR 630 receiver in a plane. So, I turned my NX8 on, and then I inserted in the very first port my 2s battery ( with the proper conector of course). This first port is labeled bind/program. The receiver started with the blinking orange light. This was what happened. Since then, every time you turn on your tx and then conect the real 6S battery, the ar630 start with the blinking orange light. And keeps this condition. You are forced to go into the binding mode into the tx in order to get the system working. After the flight, when you remove your used battery and install a new, charged battery, the situation is the same. You turn on the NX8, then connect the new 6S battery and the receiver goes inmediatly into blinking light ( bind mode). You need to go into the biding mode in the tx, you press the binding, and the system work again, ready for another flight. Thank you for your help !! Mario
In forward programing at the first screen to you see other options at the end of the list. If so this receiver needs a factory reset. Purchase yourself a spektrum programing cable. And with this you can open this option up by updating and spektrum smart receiver that normally has forward programing.
@@FatGuyFliesRC I think that what we're missing here is that he is plugging something into the bind port so yes, the receiver goes into bind mode . He needs his battery power going into any port EXCEPT the bind port. Hint, just take the prop off and work with his 'normal' battery. ??
Thank you for this tutorial. I was really struggling just using the supplied manuals (tx and rx) but as soon as I watched your explanation it all made sense. I haven't flown it yet but it all looks good.
My brother I don't know what to say, but thank you thank you thank you. The way you explain it was so simple to set up. I did a factory reset cause all I had done was wrong. Thank you again may God Bless and keep you, take care and stay safe brother. Harvey
Hi, I've just followed your video on setting up AS3X and SAFE on my new Trojan T28. It all worked first time!! Many many thanks for explaining, in layman's terms, this somewhat complex procedure. All the vert from England, 🇬🇧 UK
Very good explanation that I haven't come across before and filled in some gaps for me. One critique I have is get yourself a clip on mic so we can still hear you properly when your farther than 2 ft away.
My issue with the mic is (i have one) then I cannot plug the phone into the screen (the big TX iI keep looking at) to see if I am in focus or not. so If I use the mic , I have to hope the video does not cut out. i have done entire unbox and assembly videos using the mic then only to find out later that the video cut out right after I started.
These radios don't seem all that user friendly. I guess, once you spend enough time doing things over and over it will be easier to remember. But I'm sure glad we have you to explain this stuff. I don't think I would have the patience to learn this without being shown. Thank you for the class.
I have used this video about 5 times now to program my planes. I just wanted to say thank you. Hopefully I will get to where I can do it without the video. I'm getting close. :) I also enjoy your other videos as well.
Good video. Next I want to be able to adjust my AS3X gains while in flight. 1st I need to be able to do it on my AR636A . I installed it in my Banshee 64mm after reprogramming it. Maiden flight went well. Now time to fine tune it and mechanically trim it out so it’s spot on without using trim tabs. I do this by trimming in flight . Then at home : power up without bumping throttle, pin all surfaces in place and the unhook each Clevis. Then zero all trims and mechanically adjust push rods to easily fit correctly into pinned in place surfaces. Works great. Next time I fly it may take a few laps for gyro to learn new settings but she won’t or should not need much trim now. 😊
Thank you I've been trying to figure out my ar630 I bought brand new to put in my flight test scratch built planes and your video helped me to figure out how to get it working perfectly thank you so much 👍 on the replay my video step by step perfectly walked me through it
Nice Job , I use a bubble level set on my battery shelf forward and sideways to be sure my model was spot on before I start my programming. Your video was spot on . Almost wishing I mounted my AR631 on the top side of my FMS SuperCub 1300m . Thinking how much easier it would be to slide those big 3200 mAh 50c packs in it. Mmmmm ?…. I may rethink this. 😊. I may do some fabrication so I can run my SMC racing hi voltage packs as far forward for good CG. They are a bit to fat to slide in and still close the hatch. A hobby that keeps on giving 😊
Nice job! it took me a long time to figure out forward programming and you did a nice job explaining it and highlighting the two or three issues that most people get stuck on. The only thing that was not mention and I assume you purposely left it out because it is challenging was setting the gain which controls the amount of gyro deflection you get in AS3X. When you set the gains to fixed I’m not sure what it defaults too, maybe the gain settings that are in the SAFE/AS3X mode (your mode one) which appears Ok based on the amount of movement I could see and hear The way I was taught to set gains was to set the forward programming gain to adjustable then put the “adjustment” on your transmitter slider or knob for each control surface (ailerons, rudder and elevator) fly it with the gain at zero and turn the gain up until the control surfaces start to chatter and then slightly back them off and use that value (there is a feature in forward programming that allows you to lock in that value). Every plane is different and planes with larger control surface, for example a 3D plane, require less gain. Also the rudder for example can take more gain than the aileron. This can be time consuming, complicated and challenging. Some folks set the gains for a sport plane to 30 and that seems to be a good starting point. Anyway, you did a nice job and that will get the majority of people flying. Those who want to dial in their plane should look further into settings the gain values for the gyro (AS3X) for each control surface. I enjoy watching your videos, please keep them rolling! Tom
Thanks so much and yes you can use the knob to adjust the gains in flight. Lemon rx also supports this in some of there receivers. But my channel I try to appeal to new pilots and on the fly gains adjustments may seem very intimidating to a new pilot.
Great video, great video. For a tail wheel plane, the "set level" step means on the wheels, or prop up the tail to approximately level flight? The big question I have is can I taken anAR631 out of a club members crashed BNF AeroScout and use it in a PNP plane? Would I be able to go to forward programing and back to Factory Settings on such a BNF "used" receiver?
From tricycle to dragger, gyro will be off. U will need to re-orenintate the rx, like Greg does here. Otherwise, when u let off the elevator, it'll pitch drastically.
@@old-rcplane-phart My question is about "level" during set up - for a dragger I guess prop up the tail, don't leave on tail wheel. My problem is knowing what orientation is exactly level flight. "On the nose part" is obvious.
Yes prop up the wheel on a taildragger. As far as the reused AR361 you will need to jail break that. Watch this (it also works with a ar361) th-cam.com/video/F3isbv1U8eM/w-d-xo.html
Thank you, very well explained, I just have an issue where everything works as it should except for my ailerons are being corrected the wrong way by the Gyro ( both AS3X and SAFE), stick inputs are moving all control surfaces the correct way though. Do you have a video showing how to correct that?
You must start over with the forward programing and make sure all surfaces are moving correctly first. You do that by going to function list, the servo setup and reverse if needed. Then start forward programing.
Very good and clear video👌Could you please explain deeper the differences in between Flight mode 1,2 and 3? Following step by step your video, mode 1 is working perfectly but mode 2 and 3 gyro is not working at all🙄: I have an AR630. Where I should look at? Thanks for your help
I have 2 AR630 receivers that I recently purchased, I tried setting up by your excellent video. I have a PC21 same as you, I have a DX6e transmitter. The trouble is both these receivers DO NOT have Aux 2 channel. I use Aux1 for flaps. Is the Rx malfunctioning? Is the AR631 different?
The issue is your transmitter. You need 7 channels to use SAFE on a switch to run it independently from sharing a channel. Since you only have 6 channels then you must SHARE SAFE with your flap channel or gear channel. Both the the AR361 and AR360 allow you to separate safe to its own channel but your transmitter must have that separate channel or seventh channel available. So you must decide is how you want to share it? Share it with you gear? or flaps? I highly recommend you upgrade your transmitter to at least a NX8 that way you should not run out of channels on your transmitter and be able to fly almost everything.
Thanks for your quick reply. I'm still puzzled by the fact you are using an AR631 Rx in the video which is also 6 channels, where does the Aux2 channel come from?
Hello - I have a question regarding a receiver: Spektrum AR636B AS3X. The question is whether I can use this Spektrum AR636B AS3X receiver with gyro (stabilizer) with the DX6 transmitter? Additionally, I've seen on many other channels that they use a computer for programming the stabilizer. Is this also the case with the Spektrum AR636B AS3X receiver, where you can program the stabilizer using a computer, or can I only program the stabilizer on the Spektrum AR636B AS3X through the DX6 transmitter alone? Thank you very much for your help!
No that is what is considered the old school way before forward programing came out. I don't believe a regular DX6 supports forward programing either. If you wish to program that receiver you will need the original model files, a programing cable and the 2 programing programs available through spektrum. If can be a bit complicated and cannot be explained in this format. You honestly need to upgrade to the nx series of transmitters and the new generation of open receivers from Spektrum like a ar631 or ar630. Sorry but it would make life easier.
Just a suggestion but one of the flight modes in your case flight mode 3 should be AS3X and SAFE totally off in case there is an issue with the RX. You want to be able to disable both of them in case of an emergency. Also there is a flight mode setup for the TX and a built in flight mode in forward programming just so you know.
Hello. Great video. What are your thoughts on keeping switch position 20:59 1 (default) disabled Safe & AS3X. Switch position 2 AS3X only and Switch position 3 to have both Safe and As3X since you are using a 3 position switch. I know this is personal preference. Thanks for a great informative video.
Like you said it is personal preference nothing wrong with assigning them like you did. I basically show how but end up 99% of the time just flying in as3x and never touch that switch.
Hi, thank you for your help on these settings. I have an AR 630 Spektrum Receiver and I need to bind it each time when I want to fly my model. Do you know how to solve this problem?. Thank you Mario

I am going to get either 630 or 631. And still can't decide which one to get. Thanks for great video and thanks for great questions, answers. ❤❤❤❤❤
i agree the AR631.
What a terrific job of explaining and demonstrating forward programing. THANK YOU
Thanks so much. I hope it helped you!
Thank you for this tutorial. I was really struggling just using the supplied manuals (tx and rx) but as soon as I watched your explanation it all made sense. I haven't flown it yet but it all looks good.
I am self taught so I try to explain things they way I learn them..simply! Thanks for stopping by and please ask any question you have!
Thank you for showing us the fixed gains solution. I was stuck for hours
I was stuck too until I just started trying to adjust and discovered it.
Good Video, the other thing I do is set the knob to aux3 and use it form dynamic gain adjust while in flight......
Great tip!
Newly back into RC planes after over 10yrs, this video was super helpful, thank you so much for your help, Simon :0)
Glad it helped!
My brother I don't know what to say, but thank you thank you thank you. The way you explain it was so simple to set up. I did a factory reset cause all I had done was wrong. Thank you again may God Bless and keep you, take care and stay safe brother. Harvey
Thanks and God bless you also! helping others with this hobby is one of the reasons for this channel!
@@FatGuyFliesRC Thank you Bud.
Thank you for helping me program my first AR631 receiver!
Glad to help!
Excellent video very informative and extremely useful
Glad it was helpful!
Hi, I've just followed your video on setting up AS3X and SAFE on my new Trojan T28. It all worked first time!! Many many thanks for explaining, in layman's terms, this somewhat complex procedure. All the vert from England, 🇬🇧 UK
Glad it helped
One of the reasons for the channel. Thank you!
Great video! I had issue where SAFE worked, but AS3X did not. Had to change the Adj/Fixed to Fixed. Thanks!!!
Glad it helped!
Awesome video I've been trying for two days to get safe to work . Followed your video step by step now everything is great .
That is one of my main reasons for the channel to share what I have personally learned.
I have used this video about 5 times now to program my planes. I just wanted to say thank you. Hopefully I will get to where I can do it without the video. I'm getting close. :) I also enjoy your other videos as well.
Hew you use this video as many times as you need that is why I made it. God bless you and have a good one!
Great Video! Super helpful! Thank you!
That why I do it! Thanks so much!!
should be very locked in now.
@Fat Guy Flies RC I hope so once I get it fine tuned.
Thank you I've been trying to figure out my ar630 I bought brand new to put in my flight test scratch built planes and your video helped me to figure out how to get it working perfectly thank you so much 👍 on the replay my video step by step perfectly walked me through it
Glad I could help! That is one of the main reasons for my channel to review planes and pass on what I have learned!
Fixed (or kind of!). Relearn Servo Settings is one of the options in Gyro Settings.
yes
That was extremely helpful. I just set up my new Freewing T45 90mm. That was one hurdle you now made easy for me. Thx!!
Glad it helped!
Wow, I am glad you made this video! Thank you!
That's why I do it. To help others!
Hey, greetings from Germany, thanks for the video. It was the only guide I could find to properly program my AR631.
Best regards,
Joerg, Germany
Glad it helped
Good job thanks a lot, I’m starting to get back to this RC stuff and it’s a lot better where I was 10 years ago. Thanks again.🔧🚀🚀
Glad I could help
Thanks again FG, those Spektrum guys are ultra-nerds.
Well I am self taught so I teach from that perspective.
Very nicely done , a “go to “ video . Certainly worth saving Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
You are a legend brother! I couldn't get this figured out at all. Definitely subscribing! Thank you so much!
Well thank you! I really appreciate that!
Yep ideas spawn more ideas!
Nice job!
it took me a long time to figure out forward programming and you did a nice job explaining it and highlighting the two or three issues that most people get stuck on.
The only thing that was not mention and I assume you purposely left it out because it is challenging was setting the gain which controls the amount of gyro deflection you get in AS3X.
When you set the gains to fixed I’m not sure what it defaults too, maybe the gain settings that are in the SAFE/AS3X mode (your mode one) which appears Ok based on the amount of movement I could see and hear
The way I was taught to set gains was to set the forward programming gain to adjustable then put the “adjustment” on your transmitter slider or knob for each control surface (ailerons, rudder and elevator) fly it with the gain at zero and turn the gain up until the control surfaces start to chatter and then slightly back them off and use that value (there is a feature in forward programming that allows you to lock in that value).
@@FatGuyFliesRC Thank you so much. I have watched many of Tom's videos, but never found/saw this one.
Wow you've cleared up something that was incredibly confusing for me. Thanks for the great video!
You're very welcome!
I always refer to you video for a detailed foolproof set up. Many thanks again as i set up a new model today Cj-6
Glad to help
ThANK YOU so much fore that lesson. Could not have done it without you.
You're very welcome!
Very good and clear video👌Could you please explain deeper the differences in between Flight mode 1,2 and 3? Following step by step your video, mode 1 is working perfectly but mode 2 and 3 gyro is not working at all🙄: I have an AR630. Where I should look at? Thanks for your help
For flight mode 2 and 3 make sure as3x is set to fixed and that you have run up the throttle to over 25% to activate it.
Really useful video and my rx now working as I’d hoped, thank you! 😎
Glad it helped!
Can you make one of the switch positions with nothing?
Yes go to the one of Flight Mode screens and select as3x and inhibit it.
great tutorial. I am waiting for my receiver to arrive next week. I will see if it works as in your video. TKS
For go the f mode setup and do it after you set up the gain channel.
Thank you very much as this was just what I needed for a plane I just acquired. You did well!
Glad I could help!
@@grahampayne7285 The AUX 2 comes from my Transmitter not the receiver.
Golden hands, valuable advice, Thank you!
My pleasure!
Thank you.
❤ I agree. I want 1 flight mode with neither SAFE nor AS3X ... ❤❤
I haven't seen it yet, but I'm already a fan. :)
Well thank you!!!
You are a life saver for real thank you so much for this
Happy to help!
Thank you
Mario
unless your leaving a bind plug in the receiver you should not have to do that. Sorry other than that I have no explanation.
Hey fat guy your very informative you've helped me get reverse thust and now I've got asx3 on off setup correctly, many thanks to you. Happy days.
Glad to help and thanks.
Thank god for this video because I hadn’t a clue how to set it up thank you !
Can you set the amount of correction adjustable on one of the dials so you can decide how much correction you want etc
Yes in the as3x adjustment screen. Changer from fixed to adjustable , make the change then back again.
