You’re correct, you are one of the only videos on TH-cam who show binding the CC2 to an NX transmitter. I’ve been using the DXS this whole time but purchased the NX8 and struggled sorting everything out. Your video has worked flawlessly for me, so much that I completely deleted what I had already built on the transmitter and made a new plane profile following your guide. Thanks so much!
As an older pilot (78), I can verify that SAFE is very helpful with takeoffs and landings. I have totaled MANY planes, but none with SAFE activated. My SAFE planes include a carbon z Cessna, z Cub, and a FT Storch, and two planes I have, but not yet flown, an FT Edge 540 (just completed), and a Hangar 9 Ultra Stick. If you are crash prone, swallow your pride (or arrogance) and get flight stabilization in the planes you really don’t want to lose.

One thing “he might have missed” is setting the AS3X gains to “Fixed”instead of the default of “Adjustable”. When he skipped setting the gain channel because the NX6 doesn’t have a knob, the AS3X gains are all going to be zero. If you don’t assign a gain channel and an input for it, you must set the gains to “Fixed”. However, the menu option for that doesn’t show up until you set up a flight modes channel. For some reason, Spektrum doesn’t have you do that until you do the first time setup for SAFE. After SAFE is set up, you can go back to the AS3X settings screen and the option to change the AS3X gains from “Adjustable” to “Fixed” will magically appear. I don’t like how the menus change as you go through the setup process. It forces you to keep cycling through them to make sure you haven’t missed anything. They could have had it automatically set the gains to “Fixed” if you didn’t set up a gain channel and they should have had you set up the flight modes channel long before the first time SAFE setup. Also, even though a 6 channel transmitter doesn’t have a knob, you could put the gain channel on a 3-position switch which would give you three gain settings - 0%, 1/2 of the gain settings, or the full amount of the gain settings. Not great, but better than nothing.
Thanks for response here and also detailed response on Fat Guy Flies channel. The manual does not stress the importance of setting the gains to fixed. Great video and it also a key item needs to be said. If using a transmitter (such as an nx6 seen here) with no adjustable gain. Then you must set gains as fixed in gain settings. By default they are set to adjustable. If this is missed, it will appear as though safe works when the switch is set to that, but when switched to as3x only, nothing happens. I swapped my DX8e to an NX8, mostly so I could get updates on Wifi. Great improvement. My Timber Turbo Evo had been set up with DX8e so I saved the settings to SD and then installed in NX8. After binding, all the functions and switches were correct, correct control responses. Off for a test flight then I discovered AS3X worked but no safe. Basic bind error as in effect I disabled safe, so following the bind procedure it is most important after you remove the bind plug, that the transmitter is off. You then hold down the bind button and at the same time turn on transmitter. The display will then show binding and configuration, when complete you are done. Having the receiver AS637TA delivered with the Timber Turbo EVO, I do not have the option of 1st time settings and forward programming goes straight to the single Gyro option and it does not give me option to set the gains. Thank you thank you thank you this video finally explain exactly what I needed to know in forward programming finally got my plane to fly after two failed Maidens this is the program for me I’m saving it and thank you Verizon I don’t know this fellows name but he did a awesome job explaining exactly what you need to do and know to program your plane right Please give this man a raise he deserves every bit of it I almost gave up butt he is the man 👨 now I am going to reprogram all my planes right thank you thank you thank you so much this is the video fellas if you want to program your plane this is it🤜❤️✌️👍😁
I have tried to follow the video with my NX8 and AR637T....but I don't get many flight mode screens and setup screens you show. I can do the test you show at the end and confirm SAFE works, but can't confirm AS3X at all. What do I do now?
We have used this video to program our planes and put SAFE and AS3X on a 3 position switch and have gone back and reviewed it when we need a refresher. We would like to know, can we use this video utilizing the new firmware we updated our receiver to accommodate AS3X+ ??
I have set up as3x and safe on switch b (a 3 position switch) on nx6 transmitter and ar637t receiver. Flight modes are no as3x, as3x on, safe. All travel, gains, dual rates, rates and expo are exactly the same for all flight modes. In off and as3x modes travel and throws work exactly as expected. However, if I turn on safe (with self level), throws and travel are greatly reduced. So much so that I am concerned elevator throw is so little, there is not enough command to control aircraft. Can someone help me understand why travel is reduced like this?
I ha v e jus t purchased an N X 8 and a A R8360 T A S X 3 and Im new to Spektrum. If I follow this video will it be applicable to my set up? I cant find any videos for my A R 8360T . Also I have stuffed up Flight modes . How doe I set them back to "factory"Thanks, Paul
I use safe for all of my planes and use as3x as well. I have noticed on my war planes that safe makes them wiggle too much. I have the sensitivity down to one. Do I need to adjust those percentage rates in forward programming to make it more stable in safe?
Thank you for the more simplified version for AS3X and SAFE programming. I watched all the Spektrum videos pertaining to this receiver but this video gave me the info I needed to program AS3X and SAFE as if it were a BNF model without the complexities of mass programming. Can I program an AR636 with my iX20 or do I have to do that old school i.e. cable and laptop?
Tom: Great video. I didn't see how to use the flight mode switch to select between AS3X and Safe mode on and off. Do you have this in a PDF document so I won't have to rewind so many times? I just got a new NX8 and it came with a AR8020T receiver and I'm trying to Forward Program it. A written document would be great but I can't find it anywhere on the Spektrum or Horizon websites
Did you figure out how to put safe into flight mode switch? I have an ix12 and just put safe on its own two way switch channel 7 aux 2. I couldn't figure out how to have it assigned to flight mode switch.
@@I_am_archie yes I did. I put together a word document that I call “The missing manual”. My instructions are in it. Position “0” of the Flight mode switch has both turned off. Position 1 has AS3X on. Position 2 has BOTH AS3X and Safe Envelope mode on. I found no way to turn AS3X off while Safe Envelope is on. If this sounds like it will work for you, I can email the document, or how else to send it? It’s about 10 pages long cuz it has a bunch of other undocumented tips in there too.
Kyle......an F Mode question: on the flight mode channel that has AS3X and SAFE turned off, do I set both selections on the menu to Inhibit? (The video looked like AS3X was set to Active on the clean channel)
Good video but you don't mention anything about YAW. When I first setup my AR630 with a DX6 transmitter update to 2.09 I wasn't able to see the rudder move when testing it on the bench. I then went into the Heading settings and changed YAW which was set to 0. They also issue a warning above the YAW setting. Can you suggest a good starting value for YAW in both AS3X and Safe? Why the warning about YAW? Thank you
Great, understandable, video. Got a question. I have an "Updated" DX9 Transmitter, and a brand new "Un programmed" AR631 Receiver. Will these series of events work with this combination. For the most part. Let me know please. THANKS.
Building an old balsa pylon model which is having only aileron and elevator to control. I am planning to have 2 servos for the ailerons. Would ASX3 or even SAFE be a possible help to assist me without rudder control? Using a Spektrum NX6 and an AR630.
I didn't know that AS3X goes away at extream stick movement.I was also wondering If I could get forward programing on my old gen 1 DX8 silver version.I have the firmware updated to the latested version of 3,01 (September 2014).
I'm well trained to program older 636 series with AS3X Programmer where we had to correctly set up the surfaces direction to get proper AS3X response. On the newer Forward Programming enabled Rx series, there is no more surfaces settings in the FP menus (or I missed it)... So I'm wondering the Tx/Rx can know the right servo direction in order to get AS3X/Safe working properly? And how may we reverse a surface direction in case of wrong surface direction (during AS3X/Safe test)? 🤔
I'm using a "DX6" to do the forward programming and my wing type is two alieron servos and one Y harnessed flap servo, no retracts. So my Rx port assignments displays 1 through 6 just like yours. HOWEVER, despite my having selected a flight mode switch same as you did, my channel input config page DOES NOT have an entry for "7 aux2: B" I have no 7th entry, so I can't assign and independent flight mode switch for safe select. Is this because I'm using a DX6 instead of an NX6 that you are using??? what's going on here? if anyone knows, please help. Thanks.
Question: After initial forward program setup, let say, I want to move my AR637T to a different HH airplane.... what is the correct process of re-setting up the AR637T? Do I just need to do a "relearn servo settings"? Or do I need to do a "Factory Reset" and then redo forward programming after I have properly setup all my servos and channel assignments?
Hello Horizon Hobby. I just bought a Spekrum iX14 two weeks ago. At first i noticed it came with " Forward Programming ". After I binded with the receiver AR637T then the Forward programming was disappeared from my screen?? What can I do from here? Please help? Thanks
Great video. Does the AR8020T have SAFE Select and AS3X? Because when I go to the Forward Programming menu I don't see the Gyro option you showed. Thanks.
Hi , I have a couple of these receivers having just come back to rc from the stone ages about 35 years ago . I have put one of them in a RES style so that I can have the vario , altimeter and rx battery status . Having only Rudder , Elevator & Spoilers I have plugged the rudder into the aileron port in the receiver , so will I still have the AS3X & Safe Select modes available when we are finally allowed to fly again soon in the UK . Thanks for a great tutorial !
Somehow, I missed the menu option "Level model and capture attitude" at 10:30. Not that it really matters because I always have to enter a nose-up pitch attitude correction after test flying my planes. They all kick the elevator up some whenever I go into SAFE mode with them sitting level on the ground.
SAFE or SAFE Select will only come on and work in a flight mode if the gains are set to fixed. If the gains are adjustable and you flip the plane the ailerons will not react and will not flip the plane back. Check it out for yourself!
Love your informative video's. You just keep getting better & better at letting us novices know about RC. Big fan of Eflite & Spektrum...and a big collector of them also. Summer flying fun here in OZ at the nearby beach (youtube/bellairvideo) and have purchased two of these receivers, so will try & program them successfully now. Many thanks. Keep safe & well & have a wonderful Christmas
I just purchased the new night radian and trying to set it up on my DX6 Gen 3 transmitter. and there is no forward programing menu on menu screen. is there a upgrade that i need to do to get it to load?
Help! I have a DX6E with a AR630 receiver. I’m trying to set up as3x and safe on a 6 channel edf jet. I can get it programmed with both but I can’t turn off the safe, it’s on full time. ????
Would these settings work for a scratch built aircraft? I just made a P-47 out of Home Depot foam board and Balsa. I followed everything just I'm still having trouble with SAFE. AS3X works like a champ but as I turn over the plane SAFE isn't working for me
Absolutely. We actually have plans to convert our 10cc Ultra Stick to glow power yet retain the functionality of the AR637 show in this video AND here: th-cam.com/video/ZqPA8fyLBh8/w-d-xo.html
When I go to Forward Programming I only see one option, Gyro Settings, I don't see Other Settings. And in Gyro Settins I don't see any First Time Setup option, instead, SAFE Select appears, I click on it and then I see the flight modes according to switch B position. I tried with a AR631 rx and it goes according to what you show, but the AR637TA sees to have another programming or setting, I don't understand what happens here. It never asks mee to put the plan on its nose to start with. At the end of the day I manage to get the 3 flight modes i want, SAFE+AS3X, AS3X, nothing. But I don't see how to change the gain or the limit angles.
Quick question/comment. I had previously been told by Spektrum that one should never reverse the servo in the TX for aileron/elevator or rudder . Only in the RX because the SAFE will be reversed. Am I mistaken?
Is there a way to adjust control surface deflections on a bnf plane? My F 16 Thunderbird bnf 70 mm has AR631 and i noticed when safe switch is on my control surfaces move almost 40 to 50% less and when i turn safe off it is normal movement. Its very strange. My other f 15 eagle does not do that and both in safe and not safe control surfaces move exact same amount. I am so confused. . Is there an issue with the AR631 reciever you think? I am scared to even fly it again since i can clearly see control surfaces are not going to its capacity or limits. Any help would be helful man. Thank you.
I have a question: When I am flying I use safe mode, but when I am higher in altitude I assigned a switch to turn safe off so I can do some maneuvers. I have enough flight experience now but I am afraid to go off of safe completely but can't use safe for rolls, etc. Is there a more advanced mode that stabilizes the plane without being in full safe mode?
nice joby guys, so if i understand correctly if i get one of your 637 rx`s i can programm it with my DX8 Gen.2 - is there a difference maybe because im from germany or will this work with the same hardware sold here too???
I've got a DX8G1 and an AR8360T. I can't do forward programming on my transmitter to setup AS3X or SAFE. My friend has a newer transmitter, I believe a DX6E. Could we use the DX6E to setup Forward Programming>Gyro Settings to setup AS3X and SAFE on my AR8360T and could I then use my DX8G1 to fly my plane and get the benefits of AS3X and SAFE? Thanks for any help and thanks for all the great content!
I have the AR630 reciever, 6v rated digital servos, and i bought the Spektrum Smart 3200 9.9 Life reciever battery pack. Will the reciever and servos be ok with this much voltage? I wouldnt wanna roast anything...especially in mid flight. I noticed the reciever has a 9v rating. Hope i didnt make a mistake by buying those reciever packs
Hello, I have installed an AR8360T receiver in my gas plane. It’s a 3D 8 channel aircraft and my radio is a DX8G2 therefore all my channels are used. I know I can’t have safe as there’s no available channel for it but can I still have AS3X stability with no available channel? Or will I absolutely need a 9 or 10 channel radio to have the AS3X functioning?
My AR637T won’t finish. Followed your directions and when I get to Apply at the end nothing happens. My screen returns to the original choice and Safe doesn’t load. Any clues?
I need help please I have a DX6e somehow got the throttle working on the ailerons stick, I have had lots of RC never a transmitter like this but I am lost in space please help
Question: When you first fly the plane after setting up as3x and Safe, trim the plane (with Safe off) to get it to fly straight and level, will Safe then use those adjustments as it’s base? Also, can you trim it while in Safe?
Gerald, hopefully this makes sense. Setup/trim the plan in non-gyro OR AS3X mode first. These trim adjustments will carry over into SAFE mode (unless you have some other flight mode programmed that prevents this). However, SAFE will take priority over these trim adjustments as it will always return the plane to the "attitude" settings you programmed on the bench, regardless of trim. So, if the plane makes some awkward/undesired response when you flip into SAFE mode, it is likely you need to recapture/program the attitude settings (on the bench).
I have brought the AR637T telemetry receiver, does any know what the black and red wire with what looks to be a white two pin plug is used for that it came with?
@@MJBorrett2379 Hi , it's for rx battery voltage telemetry . I have just put one of theses receivers in an F3 RES glider to give me various & altitude telemetry , but I also soldered the black & red lead you mentioned into nimh battery lead and plugged it into the " D " voltage sensor port on the receiver . Now flick a switch on the tx and a nice lady tells me the rx voltage ! COOL , Hope this helps , I'm still waiting to find out if safe etc will be as effective with just RES . Stay safe !
If I already programmaed as3x on a 637t but need to do mechanical adjustments to the plane like trim elevator, would i have to reset the receiver and start all over again?
Technically the setup is the same, but there really isn't "forward programming" with the 6610 since it does NOT have AS3X or SAFE Select. Yes, it will work in the CJ-6.
something seems off to me....I have a Turbo Timber, the manual is quite clear on how to activate AS3X and SAFE. It was NOTHING like all that he just went through. Activating Safe is determined by how you bind the plane with the bind plug, then hold the gimbles together and flip a switch 5 full toggles to assign it. AS3X can be left out but who would - SAFE is assigned to a switch and activate if you get in a bind. Is this video talking about something all together different or is it the plane that he's using that makes the difference?
Timber is a bind and fly already set up for as3x if you use bind plugs as it says in manual. You cannot get into forward programming on bind and fly unless you Jail break it (which is another spectrum video). This video is for a brand new receiver out of the box for any plane you put it in. Basically you are programming what they do already for bind and fly aircraft out of the box. Bind and fly just has horizon having done all this for you
Hi guys, I just got the 1.2 Corsair yesterday and I’m trying to setup AS3X on my nx6 and when I hit forward programming it says “connection failed”. I’ve tried several times but nothings working. Any insight?
The Corsair does not support Forward Programming. The BNF model utilizes older receiver technology. You would have to upgrade the receiver to take advantage of this feature, unfortunately.
Please do a video on how to unlock a AR637. I paid for the receiver and would like to be able to use it in another plane, with safe. Why do you need to lock the channels in the first place?
Here is an interesting Question: I have had a couple of FMS model aircraft including the Super Viper & The Avanti V3. I then have taken the 636 receiver from the E-flite Viper & installed in the Super Viper (same aircraft) & then the Avanti. The both fly beautifully in SAFE mode.I would have loved to have purchased from Spektrum the 636 for say the Viper set up, but this is not sold as a safe or AS3X set up programmed & ready to install. I wonder why? I know now we can do this ourselves with the 630 or 637T, but it would have been great to buy the 636 already set up for a specific model.
You can send your current AR636 settings to a virgin AR636 using the PC or mobile App. Here's a video briefly explaining how to - th-cam.com/video/9lufZv72Ino/w-d-xo.html

I agree 100% with your namesake. Satan is on the move in America.
Nothing wrong with using SAFE.
This is the first video on Forward Programming that has been succinct and practical. Thanks!!

That’s a good question I would like to know also, with the NX-8 🤔
Good video! Wish you would have explained what Flight Mode is.
Tom: Great video. I didn't see how to use the flight mode switch to select between AS3X and Safe mode on and off. Do you have this in a PDF
document so I won't have to rewind so many times? I just got a new NX8 and it came with a AR8020T receiver and I'm trying to Forward Program
it.
AS3X can still be "active" on the clean channel as long as your gains are at 0%. Two different ways to skin a cat in theory ;).
@@horizonhobby Excellent...Thanks Kyle!
Thank you
I don't know about as3x, but my understanding is that SAFE only affects roll and pitch controls, but not the rudder.
All of the videos I have watched for the AR636B say DON'T REVERSE SERVOS IN THE RADIO. Is this something new now changing them in the radio.
Thanks.
Thank you so much. Is there a video about the gains settings?
Question: After initial forward program setup, let say, I want to move my AR637T to a different HH airplane.... what is the correct process of re-setting up the AR637T? Do I just need to do a "relearn servo settings"? Or do I need to do a "Factory Reset" and then redo forward programming after I have properly setup all my servos and channel assignments?
Great job 👌
Thank you!
Hello Horizon Hobby. I just bought a Spekrum iX14 two weeks ago. At first i noticed it came with " Forward Programming ". After I binded with the receiver AR637T then the Forward programming was disappeared from my screen?? What can I do from here? Please help? Thanks
Great Job ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks for the video. This is very helpful. Will have to get around to updating my transmitter I guess.
Great video help, I’m excited to try this on one of my airplanes
thanks for this video it's the one that should have been made first
Great video. Does the AR8020T have SAFE Select and AS3X? Because when I go to the Forward Programming menu I don't see the Gyro option you showed. Thanks.
Great Job ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, now I have to go through this with my DX6e and try to make it happen.🙏🏼
After setting up forward programing, is there anything else you have to configure? Like dual rates?
Hi , I have a couple of these receivers having just come back to rc from the stone ages about 35 years ago . I have put one of them in a RES style so that I can have the vario , altimeter and rx battery status . Having only Rudder , Elevator & Spoilers I have plugged the rudder into the aileron port in the receiver , so will I still have the AS3X & Safe Select modes available when we are finally allowed to fly again soon in the UK . Thanks for a great tutorial !
Very well explained! Thanks 👍
I have a DX8 G1 which I love. Is there a firmware update for that transmitter to be compatible with Forward Programming?
Thank you for not using the IX radio like most do
Love your informative video's.
Great video
I have a Spektum NX8 and several AR635 teceivers. Can I get safe select to work on these??
Great video! When I switch off safe AS3X also turns off. How can I turn off safe and still have AS3X ? Thanks
Same problem with mine. I’m going to check the gains are switched to fixed. Someone wrote about this in one of the comments.
Panic a full throttle setting big questions. is it like hitting a panic button?
Can you advise the difference between an AR 630 & AR 631 receiver please. Is it just an added antenna.
AS3X works like a champ but as I turn over the plane SAFE isn't working for me
How can I use the dual elevator with as3x, only the elevator channel works, the auxiliary does not work with as3x, how can I solve this?
Can I do this set up with the Spektrum DX6i
Great video. Just wondering is it possible to put as3x on a nitro plane?
Have one of these on back order at HH. Looking forward to setting it up on my dx6e!
Good luck with that ! 🤬
Quick question/comment. I had previously been told by Spektrum that one should never reverse the servo in the TX for aileron/elevator or rudder . Only in the RX because the SAFE will be reversed. Am I mistaken?
I think that's true for the older receivers like AR636A
Is there a way to adjust control surface deflections on a bnf plane?
I am not able to have both SAFE and more than one other flight mode, is this correct or am I still missing something?
On the AR8360T with safe can I do all this programing on my computer with the cable like I do with my AR636 set up my safe and reverse the throws
Do you bind the receiver and transmitter first or can you do the basic setup first then bind?
Iv done basic set up first then bind afterwards.
Very helpfull video. Good job, thanks.
Question: Gains. What does gains mean or refer to in this context?
Does the NX 6 have bluetooth ?
Will forward programming work on a DX18 gen 1 transmitter?
Yes, it will work ;).
My AR637T won’t finish. Followed your directions and when I get to Apply at the end nothing happens. My screen returns to the original choice and Safe doesn’t load. Any clues?
Thanks, good info
You are welcome!
Well...i followed u along to every move. I got Safe working but not AS3X...HELPPPPP!
I need help please I have a DX6e somehow got the throttle working on the ailerons stick, I have had lots of RC never a transmitter like this but I am lost in space please help
My NX6 will not connect to my new 1.5 mustang with Avion ESC, any help to trouble shooting ? thank
Question: When you first fly the plane after setting up as3x and Safe, trim the plane (with Safe off) to get it to fly straight and level, will Safe then use those adjustments as it’s base? Also, can you trim it while in Safe?
Great question! We are going to pass this over to the Spektrum team to make 100% sure we convey the correct response.
Stay safe !
Can you use the 6 channel receiver to program as3x in a 6 channel plane
Forget the forward programming, what plane is that?
Thanks!
I have tried a dozen times to get safe programmed in to an ar630 with Nx8 on gear channel and it never works.
If I already programmaed as3x on a 637t but need to do mechanical adjustments to the plane like trim elevator, would i have to reset the receiver and start all over again?
Not necessarily, but we do recommend entering the forward programming menu and selecting the "relearn servo settings" option.
is this setup the same as the AR6610T receiver that came with the nx 6 radio. can i use the AR6610T receiver in this plane.
I have the dx6e and i dont have forward Programming and i want to have safe on my plane now how Do i Do it
My Dx8 always say „Flight pack no data“ ? What does it mean?? It says it every 3 seconds
Finally an understandable video that applies to what I need to do! Thank you!
I had the cj6 V2 it's a good plane
brilliant
Well done John.... i will look at this!
Happy Christmas mate
Is that the only receiver that can use forward programming?
Nope! Any "smart enabled" receiver can now operate via forward programming!
