It's weird watching this stuff get analyzed in-depth. I've always used Tim & Eric's comedy as a measuring stick for new people that come into my life. You either love it, hate it, or simply don't understand it. I can still be friends with people that don't like it, but I usually don't have anything in common with people who don't understand it, and it's pretty rare if I end up good friends with that person. Call me judgmental or whatever, but that's the way it is.
I think my best friendships are with people that I’ve slowly gotten into Tim and Eric’s stuff. I think most people have capacity to “get it,” but it just takes a few reps for it to click. The litmus test should be “are they open minded enough for you to show them more.” Agreed on people who flat out reject it, usually not much in common with those people…
I suspect that the people who “don’t understand it” actually come to the table acting superior. You can say “this is surface layer dumb jokes but there’s a lot of satire going on. Give it like ten seconds before you draw judgement”. Then they’ll give you two seconds and start talking about how unphased they are by whatever goofy surface-level shit they saw in those two seconds
In regards to Tim's ventures into post-irony, it's also worth mentioning a lesser-known film he starred in and helped produce, directed by Rick Alverson called "The Comedy". It's a fantastic, yet painful, cautionary tale about the dangers of "overindulging" in a post-ironic lifestyle. In his work, Heidecker uses his post-ironic humour carefully and professionally. He knows what he's doing. Post-irony really is a "don't try this at home" approach to comedy, and while it may seem like goofy fun to deliberately blur the line between funny and not funny, if you go too deep you may lose that line and end up not valuing anything. The film is absolutely brilliant and does a much better job at explaining this idea than I have here. Also, despite the title, it is very much NOT a comedic film.
I think it's also important to mention that for years Tim and Eric seemingly had no footage of them behind the scenes where they weren't in character. Every interview was either clearly an insane bit from them or just when it starts getting 'serious' they would say something stupid to show that they're still just fucking with everyone. For years even huge fans of their work didn't have a good idea of what these guys were actually like in real life which sort of helped hold the glue of all their works together and make even the most mundane, seemingly 'real' videos of them seem hilarious. Tim only started presenting as the real Tim Heidecker around 5 years ago and Eric has only recently appeared as the real Eric Wareheim a few times on Tim's podcast.

Extremely well done, from a long time fan. It’s crazy how much stuff Tim has put out that I genuinely enjoy and love and don’t just give a pass because I like the guy. Like, everything he’s made the last 15 years or so is some of my favorite all time media, let alone comedy. I love your style and I would love to see your take on Dougpound and his influence. His editing was such an insane part of that show and making something out of nothing, he deserves so much credit. Not to leave Eric out obviously he is the whole aesthetic and look and design of it all. But Doug also was a huge part of Eric Andre and his series Poundhouse is some ahead of its time, cutting edge shit haha. Also 2wetCrew! Also some of my all time favorite stuff.
This video answers a style of dry humor that became popular in succeeding generations, but a lot of what they poke fun at and their style is stuff I grew up with, particularly in the 90s when I was a teenager. They are both just a few years older than me, for what it is worth. They are Gen Xers who also reacted to the baby boomer generation in the US, just like we see with grunge music becoming popular. My interpretation is thus viscerally more different. Like, a lot of their fictional institutions (Channel 5, Cinco), their commercials like every Cinco product (particularly the ones with the two old men who perform uncomfortable cosmetic surgeries to fit into their genteel senior citizen societies), Myer's Foods etc. are examples that come to mind that subvert that Baby boomer worldview that they so hilariously mock. :) I just want to add that despite their intentionally dated skits, it's still extremely relevant and this underlying passion towards an American-style consumption (which shows itself around the world in one way or another) is still really really absurd and deserves to be mocked.
Yes indeed, you're correct on you explanation which it never crossed my mind that I would need someone explaining it, but as far as I'm concerned you've done such a good job, that I truly enjoy it very much. And for me there are no proper words that can accurately express the level of satisfaction, and how muchof laughter this guys bring me,i lmfao with the universe episode, it's one of my must favorite ones without a doubt. Really enjoy your video.
I was one of the few people I knew irl that loved Tim and Eric and have been saying they were ahead of their time for years. This video brings me so much joy.
On Cinema got me through the hardest times in my life. One of the most funny shows ever and definitely not for everyone. The character development and even the Oscar Specials are some of the most genius things any comedian/person has done for entertainment.
I've always enjoyed ridiculous humor ("Stella" is my all-time favorite), so Tim and Eric have a special place in my heart, especially when they team up with Zach G. The endless terrible evolution of Tim's "On Cinema" character is a real treat to behold!
Tim Heidecker, Eric Andre, Tim Robinson are all my brand of comedy. I remember watching Tim & Eric for the first time in 2007 and I started laughing until I couldn’t breathe and didn’t even know why. Some people laugh uncontrollably when their dog chases it’s tail. I need a little more absurdity.
Great video. I’m glad Tim and Eric’s show gets the recognition it deserves with how it influenced and even shaped newer and more experimental types of comedy by not just including one off jokes of this type but by making it the standard for the entire show. Eric’s role shouldn’t go understated though; if it wasn’t for him, many of my favorite skits would not be nearly as good. For me the next natural transition from this type of humor was easily the Eric Andre show which in itself takes the concept even further and to new absurdist and nihilistic levels I hadn’t seen before. I mean hell; where Tim’s show deconstructs sketch comedy and more, Eric Andre continues that but brings in subversions of the late night show format which I absolutely love. Speaking of deconstructing, it’s no coincidence the set gets completely obliterated each season for instance. Bird up.
The On Cinema Oscar specials are some of the funniest things you can find on the internet. That show does a genius job at editing. You get the sense that the in-character editors of this show absolutely hate Tim Heidecker, and the out-of-character editors are trying as hard as they fucking can to make Tim break.
Nothing has ever been funnier to me than Tim's stuff since I first saw Awesome Show in 07. I think I've literally watched everything he has ever made. I'm 33 and I'm wondering why there isn't anything else this good, noone else this dedicated. There is almost nothing for me!

That thud sound of the bread falling over forces me to laugh. I do not understand but I must laugh. I am powerless to stop it. There is no denying the inevitability of gravity screwing with all of us.
It sometimes takes several years for people to learn that there is nothing new under the sun. Tim and Eric are absolute masters of their art, but we are all standing on someone's shoulders
Just as the video was reaching its conclusion, my computer decided to restart, but I thought it was still part of the video so I laughed at it. My roommate then looked at me and asked me what was so funny, and then I realized that my computer was actually restarting and felt dumb.

@2:01 the most exposure the University of South Dakota has ever gotten
This channel is so underrated
I love you
Eric, my poor sweet baabi. You were robbed.
The first time I saw Tim and Eric, I was waking up on the couch after binge drinking my mom's Smirnof Ices and the Sports bit played. I was an instant fan.
I’ll have to look into those guys!! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
@@MisterSweetProductions Cool! Yeah it’s all Doug Lussenhop projects and they have been and are way ahead of their time. 3rd Beatle for sure.
Can second this DJ Dougpound is where it’s at
This video answers a style of dry humor that became popular in succeeding generations, but a lot of what they poke fun at and their style is stuff I grew up with, particularly in the 90s when I was a teenager. :)
I just want to add that despite their intentionally dated skits, it's still extremely relevant and this underlying passion towards an American-style consumption (which shows itself around the world in one way or another) is still really really absurd and deserves to be mocked.
Every clip of Tim you showed I've seen a million times before but i still laughed my ass off every time.
You're a god honest genius sir. Amazing picks to back up your points, super clean aesthetic, subscribed.
Hey thank you so much!! Glad you liked it!
Great Job!
Haven’t started the video yet but that guy is Tim Heidecker. He’s extremely famous.
Tim and Eric blew my mind when I was in high school. It was the kind of comedy I knew existed but didn’t know I needed in my life.
Dude you are made for this, keep growing!!!
Wow thank you!
I was one of the few people I knew irl that loved Tim and Eric and have been saying they were ahead of their time for years. This video brings me so much joy.
On Cinema is my favorite show. How niche is it lol?
this video was sponsored by pitzman's mustard
It really brings out the flavor!
They're not paying him, theyre just giving him lots of mustard
12:40 he did an entire hour-long special called An Evening With Tim Heidecker which you can watch in its entirety on TH-cam. It's excellent.
On Cinema got me through the hardest times in my life. One of the most funny shows ever and definitely not for everyone. The character development and even the Oscar Specials are some of the most genius things any comedian/person has done for entertainment.
Tim and Eric absolutely defined my sense of humor in my adult life
Waiting for your channel to blow up, you deserve it, good job, insert slightly impressed slow clapping meme 👏
I've always enjoyed ridiculous humor ("Stella" is my all-time favorite), so Tim and Eric have a special place in my heart, especially when they team up with Zach G. The endless terrible evolution of Tim's "On Cinema" character is a real treat to behold!
Funk rock.
I laughed. You're welcome.
We are all welcome. Thank you.
My first time seeing this guy was watching Decker unclassified on adult swim
Tim Heidecker, Eric Andre, Tim Robinson are all my brand of comedy. I remember watching Tim & Eric for the first time in 2007 and I started laughing until I couldn’t breathe and didn’t even know why. Some people laugh uncontrollably when their dog chases it’s tail. I need a little more absurdity.
Check out Connor O'Malley dude, you'll enjoy his stuff for sure.
@@gabrielrodriguez2999 I’ve seen him too. I love his Howard Schultz bits. And he was good on I Think You Should Leave
I will forever regret being too young to understand, or want to watch them on adult swim while the awesome show was still on when I was a little kid.
On Cinema at the Cinema is the greatest thing man has created
Bird up.
Oh absolutely! Eric Andre is amazing and a terrible personal to poorly imitate! It gets very awkward… speaking from experience here
@@MisterSweetProductions sooo.. Eric andre vid next
@@aadi.p4159 oooo that’s actually very possible! I’ll have to see but for sure at some point!
The Eric Andre bridge is DJ Douggpound editing too
Man, I've been thinking this forever. Great vid!
The On Cinema Oscar specials are some of the funniest things you can find on the internet. That show does a genius job at editing. You get the sense that the in-character editors of this show absolutely hate Tim Heidecker, and the out-of-character editors are trying as hard as they fucking can to make Tim break.
"I don't want anymore minions on my show!" *editors proceed to put every minions screenshot ever on the tv*
Nothing has ever been funnier to me than Tim's stuff since I first saw Awesome Show in 07. I think I've literally watched everything he has ever made. I'm 33 and I'm wondering why there isn't anything else this good, noone else this dedicated. There is almost nothing for me!
Elder Millennial did make me laugh. I also then went to her show and loved it.
I liked this video too.
this made my day, thanks
Followed Tim (and Eric) since the beginning back when I first started college. Despite the immense success, I think Tim is still underappreciated. Thanks for making this!
Also where he says, "hundreds of stars in the universe" 😂
On cinema episodes along with the dekkar spy stuff and the long episode/movie with dracula is freaking hilarious.best Tim project connection wackjob show tie in of his ever.
Watching a video of a man trying to explain how Tim and Eric's comedy works is like watching a man trying to explain how an amusement park works... it's not necessary, just go and enjoy it... or don't
4:31 Okay, can we all just stop here for a second, and just admire how good that dudes joker impression was. Like guys laugh was ON POINT!!!
Insane quality video. so happy ive stumbled upon this channel
i LAUGHED. great JOB.
as soon as I saw on cinema pop up I had to like this video
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! On cinema is so niche 😂
That thud sound of the bread falling over forces me to laugh. I do not understand but I must laugh. I am powerless to stop it. There is no denying the inevitability of gravity screwing with all of us.
I'm a high school teacher and this is BOTTOM TEXT
When you got comedy like Tim Heidecker in them, you can't lose.
Man I knew I was fucked when the bread fell over and I laughed.
I’m a Major fan of Tim and Eric both. I still randomly think about their skits to this day and crack up.
Your review of Tim Tim's camedy deserves an honorary oscer. 5 bags of microwave popcorn because it is a youtube show.
Man you should be friggin stoked with that joker voice. That was deluxe
Good humour is universal. I'm 45 and I've been cracking up at Tim and Eric for years.
Right? I'm 33 and my mom is 57. We're both huge fans who have been to their live show multiple times. If anything, she's an even bigger fan than I am.
52 here. Been a fan of T & E from the beginning.
Same, I’m also 45 and love Tim Heidecker. It makes sense really, since he’s the same age as us.
It sometimes takes several years for people to learn that there is nothing new under the sun. Tim and Eric are absolute masters of their art, but we are all standing on someone's shoulders
I admired every one of his works without even knowing his name, thanks bro! Great vid, I’m sure the algorithm will catch up to ya eventually!
On cinema at the cinema is probably my favorite comedy show because it makes fun of internet critics just like this guy
Could you imagine a world where Tim, Eric, and Andy Kaufman were all alive and doing comedy together?
Why in the unholy name of Hell did I laugh at a damn slice of bread falling over and instantly think "mood"?
Tim and Eric aren't "Gen Z humor," they started in 2001 when most Gen Zers were barely starting kindergarten and likely still pissing their pants.
Great vid!
I found Tim and Eric when I was like 10 and it shaped me as a human being
Your analysis is 100 percent correct, sir. Awesome Video, Great Job!
*The Father of Modern Comedy*
Yeah....umm, I'm gonna need you take a break from the hyperbole for a minute.
You remembered us! We exist! Thank you... from a Gen Xer.
Just as the video was reaching its conclusion, my computer decided to restart, but I thought it was still part of the video so I laughed at it. My roommate then looked at me and asked me what was so funny, and then I realized that my computer was actually restarting and felt dumb.
Hey! Long and thoughtful comment here. I'm around your age (as in your actual age, not the "you look older" age). I was shown your video on gen z humor and immediately subscribed. Just watched a few of your videos now and I'm in the wonderful phase of "this TH-camr is a gem and I wish to watch everything he has ever made in an unreasonably low amount of time.
I was unfamiliar with Tim Heidecker's name, but you brought me to the realization that this style of comedy had a beginning. It feels weird since for me it has always been there.
Also, you might have noticed that I started "this sort of thing with the apostrophe-looking things and never finished it. I'm going to do it again. I already did.
Wow! This means so much to me, thank you! I hope you end up liking my other videos as you go through my channel! Fair warning, they’re all all pretty different 😂
@@MisterSweetProductions Hey again, Adam! Thanks for the reply. I watched a bunch of your videos, and enjoy the creativity you have! "I (almost) cried" made me cry. It's a beautiful video. You make great stuff, and you should be extremely proud of yourself. I tried to join your Discord, but the links that I've found are the same and that one doesn't work. Maybe you just don't have a Discord anymore (in which case you should probably delete it from the channel's "Social media"). Anyhow, I'm left with a feeling of wanting to talk to you about literally anything :D I feel like it would be nice. However I realize that you have way too many people commenting on your stuff, so I'm not expecting anything.
Take care!
