Best moment of the marathon was the crowd getting behind Behemoth. Here is a GDQ newcomer, had a fundraiser done just to get him over here, and he puts on an awesome performance. Here's to seeing him at AGDQ 2017 and beyond!
Wow, when oats died and behemoth just started the final area at roughly the same time. The feels, the hype, the pressure, this was definitely a memorable run.
I didn't. He already has the world record (technically, tied with Zoast.) I found this to be a bit of an underdog story - Behemoth, who was dragging behind for much of the race, ended up the only one to even finish. BTW I saw this live too.
+LieutenantVague I was going of this definition of irony; " a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often wryly amusing as a result. plural noun: ironies"
Oats 42:10 WR Zoast 42:10 TWR Behe 42:45 Sweet 43:20 Oats and Zoast were the favorites coming in Sweet numb had been very consistent 8/9 no deaths prior Behe was the underdog after falling into fourth in this race
I wouldn't call it the best gdq run ever, but this definitely shows the great positivity of speedrunning. No one is ever looking for the runners to fail, they all enjoy the success, runners and audience in kind
Hm... I wouldn't call it the best. So many dying, and no real race in the end anymore... I don't know. I prefer the "Super Metroid Race" from 2014 (as everybody here has already pointed out). Now, THAT one was a nail-biter!
*Spoilers - Watch before you read comments* So sad I missed this live... *Cries* But oh my god... The ultimate in underdog stories... And the standing ovation with the name chanting... I'd have died if that were me. This may or may not be the best moment of GDQ, but either way... I think we can all agree this will be one of the highlights we remember years from now.
When Phantoon didn't claim another victim I was sure all runners could make to the end this year. How wrong I was x) And all who died were killed by different bosses :P
This was one of the best races/runs I've ever seen on any GDQ event. The crowd was so active, the run itself was so intense! I'm going to rewatch it now because I've lost some details, of course, but what a run!
I have never seen a Super Metroid run EVER! That was a spectacle to behold. Congrats to. Behemoth87 for winning and well done to Oatsngoats, Sweetnunb and Zoast! I only started watching GDQ a few months ago and I've never watched one live, but I have come to love this community. The audience especially are ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!
This was so intense to watch live!! With everyone dying, behemoth coming so close to dying, and going from last one to finish to being the only one to finish!!
Holy shit. I guess Behemoth's slower/safer strats have paid off in the end. He went from being last to being only survivor. Also I found it amazing that 1/4th of all donations in the marathon went towards save/kill.
SPOILERS IN COMMENTS agdq 2014 super metroid race - 1 player died sgdq 2015 super metroid race - 2 players died sgdq 2016 super metroid race - 3 players died oh man, can't wait for the next race!
Already can't wait for next year's SM race. Great run, awesome job by Behemoth keeping it together and finishing strong! I can't imagine the pressure after he was finally the last one alive, oh man
This race was amazing to witness live. Absolutely amazing performances by all the runners and WOW that ending is tight. It's such a pleasure to watch this again
Cubing Cymru Someone should route through that thing. Right now I can only imagine it being really long with lots of text skipping, but maybe there are some tweaks during the class trial minigames etc.
I couldn't watch this run live as it meant staying awake quite late, and i've been looking forward to watching this race. I was SHOCKED that Zoast fell on Draygon, then Oats on Mother brain. WOW, only Behemoth finished, and he got the Metroid Skip. WOW Seriously nail biting run. I loved every second!!!
This reminds me of like that Olympic Speedskating incident where Australia or something won because everyone else messed up even though they were dead last. Slow and steady wins the race.
oatsngoats, zoast and sweetnumb are all great guys, i can't prove anything and i don't feel it's a conspiracy but i feel this might have been a chance to give the new guy the spotlight. you guys truly are charitable
Besides, it would be pretty demeaning to "give the new guy a chance" like that. The least I expect from seasoned runners like that is respect for their adversaries, even if it's a race for charity and there's nothing at stake for them.
i meant, he's new to the sgdq crowd and it was awfully nice of them to give him the spotlight. truly a great bunch of people here. great runs! it's not insulting at all since it is a tough game. and it does look like they all lost coincidentally. but you can believe what you want, my perspective just assumes they are even better than.
Clovie Pounders We know what you meant. It just doesn't really make sense. It doesn't matter that he was new to the SGDQ setting, but that he was already a veteran player (like it was said, one of the techniques used in the final escape sequence was named after him). If any of the other three players thought they had to deliberately lose in order to "be nice", it would mean they didn't respect his skill--even more so if they all decided to lose together. That would have been a massive dick move.
I love how the most consistent player survived. I loved everyones run but Behemoth took his slower but consistent way and survived the run. 10/10 to all the runners tho. Loved it
I always enjoy these Super Metroid races. This years run is again amazing. I wish I got to see it live on twitch. My favorite parts and spoiler follows. 46:45 Behemoths' escape from Ridley... I quote Dragon Ball Z for this one! _If Behemoth dies in his escape it will be the end for all of them!_ 47:00 Followed by the reaction to what happens vs Mother Brain and the conclusion. Nothing else needs to be said except... I'm hungry for a stop by in the Mother Brain drive thru! Hold the Ketchup though don't want to make a mess of things.
My heart sank when Oats died.... I don't watch a lot of runs of this game, but he looked to be on WR pace after barely (If ever) missing any of the tricks. So sad to see it end that way! Great run from all the racers!
I thought so too at first. However, if you check the video of his world record run, you'll see that he was approximately a minute behind world record pace during this SGDQ2016 run. This means that he didn't miss out on a new world record by dying ^_^ HYPE~!
Did they say WR was 47 mins? I didn't catch that. I only heard them talk about the 42:10 WR. Either way, when Oats started the Mother Brain fight in his WR he was at the 37-minute point, while he was at the 38-minute point in this run. I'm not really sure what point I'm trying to make with this comment, but I'll post it anyway :3
I lost my shit when he died, and I can't imagine the what pressure on Behemoth must have been after that. No one could have predicted a finale like that.
World record pace is 42:10. He would have been 20-30 seconds behind. Still an incredible run though, he had no major fuckups until the very end of the run
I seriously did NOT expect Behemoth to win this considering he was so far behind. It just goes to show that anything can happen, and sometimes going slow and steady really does pay off.
This was the best Super Metroid had to offer. A race with 3 contestants, out of 4, falling out and the newcomer coming in to finish the fight, defeat Mother Brain, and Killing the animals. It sucked that at AGDQ 2018 they didn't have Super Metroid. It's my second favorite run after Mario World.
Looks like we need a gentlemen's "Get Ridley's E-Tank" agreement as a marathon safety strat to stave off near-debacles like this one. Or just a 4-way 100% race, which I don't think has ever been done at a GDQ.
Damn, feel bad I literally just found out about SGDQ (as a brand at all) about a week ago. Would have loved to watch the streams live! The videos are still amazing though, but will definitely not miss it next year!
Me and my girl friend were watching this race live for her Birthday and I bet on Behemoth winning the race. I was screaming when I saw everyone else get eliminated.
what's this fun they're all having near the end of the game? I didn't see any of this in the recent AGDQ 2017 super metroid race D: maybe certain person is missing here...
If there werent spastic fucks in the crowd shouting WAH every minute and they had their fun when it was apropriate, none of that drama would've happened.
I stopped watching after zoast died thinking that with one runner literally minutes behind the other there's no suspense left. Apparently, I was wrong...
I wonder how long did they spent mastering everything? for anyone who haven't played this, every 10 seconds in this game, the four of them do incredible mechanical & precise mechanical movements...

Imagine the pressure on Behemoth.
Oh, hi, you're here for the first time? Well, you're the only survivor now. _Better don't fuck up._
not to mention the $250000 that went into save/kill the animals
22:16 It looks like Samus took an elevator from SweetNumb's screen to Zoast's screen.
Lolz true!!
Most intense fucking run of this game I've seen. Behemoth man...went from last place to the last man. The pressure must have been intense.
Wow, when oats died and behemoth just started the final area at roughly the same time. The feels, the hype, the pressure, this was definitely a memorable run.
Saw live. Died a little inside for oatsngoats. Such is the nature of speedrunning!
I didn't. He already has the world record (technically, tied with Zoast.) I found this to be a bit of an underdog story - Behemoth, who was dragging behind for much of the race, ended up the only one to even finish. BTW I saw this live too.
i saw this live too!! Afk'd for 2 minutes and sweetnumb goes down i was like WUT DID I MISS?!?!?!?
Slow and Steady won the speed race, How ironic.
+LieutenantVague dang what would be the correct term? Is it just a oxymoron?
+LieutenantVague I was going of this definition of irony; " a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often wryly amusing as a result.
plural noun: ironies"
This was honestly so nerve wracking and jaw dropping. Thanks to all the runners for their amazing work!
I didn't expect slow and steady to win the speedrun.
He was darn close to die at one point tho :)
Captain N I was getting worried that no one was gonna make it through this year.
It wasn't really slow and steady. The part that really did him in was missing CWJ and messing up a bunch on the HBJ.
@@jessebillson not really I thought it was going to be sweet the one who won
19:19 countdown
This was beautiful the underdog saved the run.
Behe was the wildcard and Sweetnumb the underdog.
Oats 42:10 WR
Zoast 42:10 TWR
Behe 42:45
Sweet 43:20
Oats and Zoast were the favorites coming in
Sweet numb had been very consistent 8/9 no deaths prior
Behe was the underdog after falling into fourth in this race
Zoast took the record a couple weeks ago with a time of 41:58

When 99% of twitch chat is spamming this... You know the hype is real.
19:23 zoast and oats wear their headphone frameperfect
thats a really good comment lol xD
Super Metroid is the best game ever!
Specially for speed run matches!
WOooW, what a run!
Unbelievable! Waow!
WAOW it's crazy WAOW
I love how Behemoth was in last place and yet he is the final survivor
this was the best gdq run ever
Still second best to 2014 Super Metroid Race imo .. but it was fantastic.
I wouldn't call it the best gdq run ever, but this definitely shows the great positivity of speedrunning. No one is ever looking for the runners to fail, they all enjoy the success, runners and audience in kind
Completely agree intensity and talent at it's finest.
Hm... I wouldn't call it the best. So many dying, and no real race in the end anymore... I don't know.

Nice Game of Thrones episode
Greatest comment ever.
I don't get it
Almost everybody dies, like GoT
When Phantoon didn't claim another victim I was sure all runners could make to the end this year. How wrong I was x) And all who died were killed by different bosses :P
"EVERYONE, GIVE BEHEMOTH YOUR ENERGY!"
"SILENCE PLEASE. THIS IS SUPER SERIOUS TIME."
This was one of the best races/runs I've ever seen on any GDQ event. The crowd was so active, the run itself was so intense! I'm going to rewatch it now because I've lost some details, of course, but what a run!
I am not much into Speedruns and i just came randomly on this video, but damn...this was freaking amazing to watch.
Stay tuned for January's AGDQ 2017. Super Metroid will be there every time (it's the game that inspired the website that eventually became this.)
Irony, Slow and steady won the speed race.
45:24 - Ridley claims Sweetnumb's run.
52:30 - Dragon ends Zoast's run.
58:27 - Behemoth starts sweating.
I have never seen a Super Metroid run EVER! That was a spectacle to behold. Congrats to. Behemoth87 for winning and well done to Oatsngoats, Sweetnunb and Zoast! dang, oatsngoats was probably on 43:05 pace
at a live event
Already can't wait for next year's SM race. Great run, awesome job by Behemoth keeping it together and finishing strong! I can't imagine the pressure after he was finally the last one alive, oh man
Super Metroid has one of, if not the best communities I’ve ever seen.
This race was amazing to witness live. Absolutely amazing performances by all the runners and WOW that ending is tight. It's such a pleasure to watch this again
Slow and steady wins the race

final preparations before the run (basically just the runners sitting on a menu)
and also a quick donation by the reader
This run has more deaths than Dangan Ronpa
lmfao
as a DR fan this triggers dramatic flashbacks to me
OH FUCK (also someone should speedrun dr or dr2)
Cubing Cymru Someone should route through that thing.
Right now I can only imagine it being really long with lots of text skipping, but maybe there are some tweaks during the class trial minigames etc.
I found this comment again after doing a little research - the fastest I can find for Trigger Happy Havoc is 3h 59m 09s.

I was SHOCKED that Zoast fell on Draygon, then Oats on Mother brain. WOW, only Behemoth finished, and he got the Metroid Skip. WOW Seriously nail biting run. I loved every second!!!
love going back and watching this run, the crowd love for behemoth after everyone fell was heartwarming
GIVE BEHEMOTH YOUR ENERGY!
*raises hands*
The live run was great! First GDQ I ever saw live, requested this day off work specifically to watch this run.
This is so much better than tonights run at AGDQ 2017, which was similar to a funeral.
sometimes slow is fast
Even 46 requires year+ practice, great general game skills, and awesome memory/composure. 3 E tanks, no room for error
Super Metroid race my SGDQ highlight evey year. I love it.
the video is like 2 mins behind and i don't see a single comment talking about it. is there a version where it's fixed?
Right?
Found a fix. It's some kind of cache issue, try opening it fresh in a different browser and it should be fine.
Had to use shitty Microsoft Edge browser and it worked
Finally! I've been waiting for this upload. One of the rare races that had me on the edge of my seat. Was rooting for poor Oats ^_^
I feel the same, don't worry.

draygon, and a nasty MB2
I love how the most consistent player survived. I loved everyones run but Behemoth took his slower but consistent way and survived the run. 10/10 to all the runners tho. Loved it

1:08:05 I love this moment so much. This just feels so powerful with all these people that came together
When he said give Behemoth your energy I raised my hands and made a spirit bomb
My heart sank when Oats died.... I don't watch a lot of runs of this game, but he looked to be on WR pace after barely (If ever) missing any of the tricks. So sad to see it end that way! Great run from all the racers!

it hasn´t wr potencial :P
he has wr at 42:10
this might have been 43:00 which is still epic to watch live and get that hyped feeling
This was awesome, in the end it was the underdog who came through to beat 3 legends which shows that survival is sometimes half of the run
oh. oats. I'm so sorry. you were doing so good. your run was incredible!
What an amazing run... Was rooting for Behemoth the whole time, congrats to every runner there
Damn I was rooting for oatsngoats and he was on WR Pace! Such a shame v.v Awesome race though!
He was not on WR pace, he was a whole minute behind.
I lost my shit when he died, and I can't imagine the what pressure on Behemoth must have been after that. No one could have predicted a finale like that.

I was rooting for my boy Oats but everyone did amazing and Behemoth definitely earned a lot of respect 💪🏽
Man, this game is so real and unforgiving. The chance of death adds such a wonderful flavor to the run.
Man, this was one the best races I've seen so far !
Amazing!! I need to see it live next time!
This run was amazing, one of the best.
Finaly!! I've been wating so long for this race to come up!
wow this gets me so emotional.... shedding quite a few tears during this
This and Mario Maker were hype af, def my favorite games to watch at SGDQ
Looks like we need a gentlemen's "Get Ridley's E-Tank" agreement as a marathon safety strat to stave off near-debacles like this one. Or just a 4-way 100% race, which I don't think has ever been done at a GDQ.
How did Oats die? It looks like he got hit by the beam then just straight up ran into Mother Brain.
If you drop below 300 the fight is unwinnable due to the required eye beam attack.
Right, so rather than wait for the inevitable, he forfeit.
Ah, I see. Thank you.
Technically the Q hasn't been A'd yet.
The Q was: How did he die. Not why'd he kill himself.
In my opinion it looks like he got stomped on.
Uncle Honey ,
Best race every year. Love it! 😃
this is the most positive reaction to being asked if you want to kill animals
Super Metroid is THE game for speedruns!
That was the most intense super metro if race I've ever seen, and they raised 250,000$ while doing it!!! Amazing job guys #AGDQ2016
You chose...wisely
Behemoth took his time to make sure he didn't mess up, he played wisely
Man, I didn't see that coming. Epic race. Super Metroid is no joke.
The perfect example of its anybody’s race. Amazing run from some of the best!
As always I was asleep during this. So I'm glad the video is up. Thanks a ton.
Where is oddish when you need it?... oh... wrong game, sorry. So emotional moments had this year's SGDQ... Great!
awesome race, loved the crowds energy! oatsngoats you were so close lol
Wow... totally unexpected. That was epic!
This was epic, dramatic, heartbreaking. Wow, what a race!
Slow and steady really does win the race. Holy crap what a good race this was though.
Ridley - 1
Draygon - 1
Phantoon - 0
Kraid - 0
Mother Brain - 1
Speed Runners - 1
And the one who was in last place, the underdog, the (sorta) slowish one, finishes in first place! :D great run!
It is really hard to do this kinds of runs, specially with only 3 e tank pick ups, great job by the runners, such is the difficulty of any% runs
Press 1 if you feel bad for oatsngoats
Press F to pay respects

what's this fun they're all having near the end of the game? I didn't see any of this in the recent AGDQ 2017 super metroid race D: maybe certain person is missing here...
If there werent spastic fucks in the crowd shouting WAH every minute and they had their fun when it was apropriate, none of that drama would've happened.
love this run.... shout out from Guyana, South America
I stopped watching after zoast died thinking that with one runner literally minutes behind the other there's no suspense left.
Apparently, I was wrong...
A valuable lesson - never stop watching Super Metroid because the odds are high that it will kill someone.
This race was brutal, traumatizing and AWESOME.
Well... this answers the question "how good CAN SOMEONE be at Metroid"??
I wonder how long did they spent mastering everything? for anyone who haven't played this, every 10 seconds in this game, the four of them do incredible mechanical & precise mechanical movements...

You are mostly welcome.
4 runners and only Behemoth87 finished! It's like the old saying goes, "slow and steady wins the race."
At least no one died to Phantoon!
A true underdog story, behemoth in last but clutches the game with the last survivor.

The Battle... The Struggle... The War... It was pretty tense for a minute...
Such an Epic Race, that ending that so heartpounding, Congrats to the Winner (P.S. Don't tell Fluttershy the results xD)
