There's something magical about a first timer's experience with Super Metroid. I wasn't able to play it back in my youth since I had a Genesis, so I ended up playing it via emulation about a decade ago. It still stunned me with its atmosphere, sense of isolation, and the glorious soundtrack. There's something about the Brinstar Overgrowth theme that blows me away to this day.

My dude...... I played it back in the day. I honestly don't remember if I ever beat it when I was (I think) 11 or 12. A few years later in my late teens I did beat it. But yeah...... the game is just amazing. Its why when you look at lists for the SNES. Super Metroid is within the top 10. Dare I say within the top 5? It's a game I have on multiple consoles and a game I do go back when I wanna play something from that era.

I remembered when the GBA Metroids came out, some fans don't like the way those games gives you hints on where to go, unlike in Super Metroid.
I also remembered when I played Super Metroid the first time it took me the same amount of time on where I should go like Max. And here we see the effects of backseating. Because somebody tipped him off about the walljumps early before finding the animals, after he got the grappling hook, he missed that the game was trying to teach him about how to use it. The same room and the room after that were meant to do that, instead he completed the grappling hook room by practicing walljumps and missed the grapple block, and same thing with the second room, he just jumped over the gap again not noticing the grapple block. Then on the third room where it's needed, he spent some time confused about what to do, until he realized that "oh wait, I have the grappling hook" and then some more time got spent on being confused about how to use it and fighting and screwing around with the controls.

    • @LittleAl016
      @LittleAl016 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

I don't think that a lot of people did have any concept of the Chozo until Prime, Fusion, and the manga. Fusion fleshed the Chozo via the backstory in the manual, while Prime fleshed out the Chozo via in-game lore (with the lore in the European and Trilogy versions of Prime being treated as the canon versions), and the manga fleshed out the Chozo through the events that unfolded. Though the Japanese guidebook for Super Metroid did mention Samus as having been adopted by the Chozo, this wasn't expounded upon until the manga.
There was also a non-canon Super Metroid comic in Nintendo Power Magazine, however. And it's worth noting that many characters introduced in it became canon immigrants via their inclusion in the manga, which was solidified to be canon thanks to Zero Mission.

I first played the game in around 2014 when I was about ten-ish. While I loved the gameplay loop, I didn’t get most of that detail until years later and now it’s still me of my favorite games, despite being about a decade older than I am.

Upon watching this and re-thinking of my own playthrough of this game back in around 1995... I'm realizing especially now how _AMAZING_ the sound design in this game is.
I know the SNES' sound chip was capable of surprisingly complex music and sound quality (well, for the time and in retrospect) but the more I think about it and make comparisons to other SNES games and the more I'm starting to believe that Super Metroid may well have the absolute best sound design in the entire SNES library. And by sound I don't even mean the soundtrack (which itself is incredible). I mean the various little blips and environmental ambient sounds of the various maps. The _atmosphere_ and the feeling of 'dread' in this game just coming off of the sound design alone is top notch. From the sound of the suit's Cannon, missiles, lasers, to the sound of the doors opening (about as memorable as the doors sounds in DOOM), to the footsteps to the super powers when they kick in, the enemies and sound cues when getting hit, to the eerie background atmosphere and unsettling bosses screams. It's just a marvel work of art.
I think that Super Metroid is so good for being a 16-bit game that I would say that's the sort of a 2D game I imagine would have been made for the Sega Saturn or PS1 instead. It's really an outstanding game and probably represents the peak of 16-bit gaming. There's a lot of amazing games on the SNES (and Genesis as well) and I could easily think of Mega Man X, Link to the Past or Donkey Kong Country of course but... jeebus man Super Metroid does something so great it's almost unbelievable it was a Super Nintendo game.

@@RRRRRRRRR33 🤷‍♂️ I like the rpg elements for the form of managing your character and grinding low drop rates for good stuff.
Metroid is the simpler version where Castlevania would add newer mechanics to their GBA/DS games.

I've done a fair bit of Super Metroid speedrunning, and posted several glitches/strategies on its GameFAQs page. If this were any other game, I'd be bothered by all the mistakes Max is making. But Super Metroid is special case; it rewards attention to detail and thinking outside the box. It's always so interesting seeing how a new player figures it all out.

7:35 You do get a higher jump if you do a diagonal jump.
11:13 This part is meant to look like that.
16:29 No, Max. That’s where the map terminal is. The frame is where you are.
22:56 You can shoot his bomb things to get health and missiles. Also if you stay in Morph Ball form, Torizo can’t hit you unless it lands on you.

glad to see more people joining the Metroid hype train, this franchise really needed the attention because it's really good, Super Metroid was already a good game and now they are tapping to the potential of the franchise even further because Dread looks so smooth, can't believe this is happening, 5 more days until Metroid Dread!

I see Max plays this for the first time and is already sequence breaking the Wave beam brings a tear to my eye. He is one of us at heart. A true Metroid Weeb.
I still think Super isn't the best Metroid experience, solely because of the Jank but damn. They WENT HARD with this game in the 90ies. The sheer amount of weird tech you can pull off alone is just bliss. I love that!
The Shinespark, Walljump, Bomb jumps, Charge Bombs, Poor Mans Screw Attack, the weird amount of beam combinations with unique special moves for most of them, the Crystal Fucking Flash!? Jesus.

It is genuinely a joy watching someone who has never played any metroid games to find shit and discover things on their own. With Max's love for Aliens (franchise) and the fact that this game is an absolute masterpiece, although confusing to new players. As someone who only finished it a couple of months ago, it is just amazing to see people fumble around and admire some clever things this game and others like it could present that are fresh and interesting. This video and other video's like it where people first experience super Metroid are a joy to watch to reiterate.

Dood!!! I have been following your channel for YEARS, HUGE fan, and I'm about 1000% sure that you can kick my ass in ANY fighting game. My first fighting games were Mortal Kombat 1 and Street Fighter II, both on SNES, and been playing fighting games since, but I'm nowhere close to an expert like you are.
With that been said, Super Metroid has been my ALL TIME FAVORITE GAME since I was about 12 years old around 1995 since I my parents got me that game. I used to play it all day. I can probably get about 99% items with my eyes closed. Watching you play this for the same time had so many amazing moments (and some cringe since right at the beginning you missed 2 missile upgrades and I wanted to tell you how many things you were missing or wasting time on), but it reminded me of how much I loved playing this as a kid, exploring every nook and cranny, wasting hours and hours trying to get items just to have to come back later once upgraded.
I watched all 4 hours and I'm about to start part 2. This is seriously not something I thought I would watch on your channel. Thank you for this!!!
