Yes, characters call him out on it and it does come back to bite him repeatedly, but heroes must have their flaws.
Honestly, the thing that makes that philosophy makes sense, is that he's not against imprisonment (he just doesn't think of it as the immediate option) and his forgiving nature has served him and the world well before. So there is precedent.
And for the opposite, why doesn't Eggman just kill Sonic, that's gone over as well. He very easily could if he truly wanted to but he wants to prove that he is superior to Sonic.

Here's a few: Sonic CD is... a weird game to not include given it's the first appearance of Amy and Metal Sonic on top of now officially taking place between Sonic 1 and 2. The GBA games are the most confusing of the bunch. While Advance 1 and 2 could happen just fine (on top of 2 being Cream's first game), Advance 3 is a direct sequel to Sonic Battle. Said game features a Shadow that has no amnesia and has embraced his past as Gerald's creation. My guess is that the timeline splits before converging in 06. Speaking of 06, despite the disappearing of Solaris, there is some evidence in later games that it wasn't a full reset. Notably, Blaze remembers Crisis City. The Rivals games reveal that a different version of Iblis now known as Ifrit still exists and that Eggman had a descendant known as Eggman Nega (formerly said to be from an alternate dimension in the Rush games), who became evil because the Robotnik name got sullied by Eggman's many failures, which caused him to be looked down by others. He gets called out by Shadow, who says that's just an excuse (and given Eggman was still evil even after looking up to Gerald, he's not wrong).
Personally I think the reason why Blaze remembers crisis city is because she was sent to another dimension before the timeline being reset, thus meaning that she would be immune to any changes that happens in sonics world

This timeline is incorrect. Sonic CD is between Sonic & and Sonic 2. If it wasn't already obvious by the fact that it was before sonic and tails were friends, it should be because Sonic Origins doubles down on this by placing Sonic CD between Sonic 1 & 2 with an animated cutscene of Sonic saving Tails from the other foxes who were bullying him for having two tails and learning to spin his tails in order to catch up to Sonic.
A little late to answer, but I have pondered this myself. Aside from “it’s a franchise” reasoning, The reason sonic doesn’t just kill Eggman, it’s because Eggman doesn’t needlessly kill or slaughter, Sonic and friends are constantly at odds with Eggman and his robots so the only times Eggman “kills” is when someone opposing him dies to one of his traps or mechs. Sonic even Has a line in sonic adventure 2 is response to the gravity of a threat Eggman makes. Sonic only kills, when it’s absolutely necessary.

I just realized something now that I'm much more knowledgeable about Sonic lore. Sonic Forces could have the resistance be the Freedom Fighters. We could've had Sally since she did appear in a Sonic game once. This would've been great fanservice (better than allowing you to have your OC in the game) if the writing was good.
As someone who found Shadow a boring and unnecessarily edgy character, I love his story and ended up having a complete change of heart. His game is the pinnacle of all of that. Or should I say All of Me? Also Sonic 06 is subjectively not a bad game.

Technically, Sonic has regularly tried to defeat Eggman permanently. He regularly destroys robots that Eggman is piloting, making them blow up.
The problem is that Eggman keeps surviving everything (kinda like Bowser).
Team Chaotix has the most relatable story in sonic heroes. They're just trying to pay their rent.

To the question of murdering Robotnik, it's simple: Kintobor, Robotnik before the Chaos Emeralds corrupted him, was a father figure to Sonic. There's probably some emotional baggage attached to that.

Sonic Forces could have the resistance be the Freedom Fighters. We could've had Sally since she did appear in a Sonic game once.
This would've been great fanservice (better than allowing you to have your OC in the game) if the writing was good.
Patt's voice is much too high pitched for him to do a proper Shadow impression, but hey, he gave it some good effort.
As someone who found Shadow a boring and unnecessarily edgy character, I love his story and ended up having a complete change of heart. His game is the pinnacle of all of that. Or should I say All of Me?
