Funnily enough, by showing this kind of humour early on to children, they will not understand most of it but will subconsciously develop it later in life as they grow.

"would kids even get that joke" by my own experience no kids won't, rather it's most likely for the parent stuck watching with their kid, the kid will most likely be like us gen z and melenials looking back to "the good old shows from our childhood" and she all the adult humour in the show. And knowing kids they wouldn't even notice the jokes, and would instead be "hey blue gotta go fast guy is talking let's laugh"
I mean Spongebob in its first few seasons pulled the exact same thing. Sure there were jokes kids wouldn't understand but the adults watching it can get a few laughs in too. That's the power of creating good content for general audiences.

A lot of kids shows have more adult/double meaning jokes for the parents, older siblings, legal guardian or whoever responsible who got stuck watching over the kid
Definitely, the Muppet Show from the 70s was built on this premise. The smart, witty, and adult jokes sailed over the heads of the kids who were too enamored with the muppets themselves. XD

Knuckles’ “Beat-up-the-biggest-one” and the feminist clip, I’ve seen them over 100 times, and I never get sick of it.
Also, Boom Knuckles, the stereotypical big-tough-stupid-one of this series, understands the concept of feminism better than modern Disney does. *Think about that.*

I watched this as a kid and the jokes completely went over my head, so I got my enjoyment from the action. Then I found it again recently and realised that this was one the good ones😂

The funny thing is, compared to most family shows, both old and new, this is still pretty tame. Seriously, kids shows have been making jokes like this for years. How are people still surprised by this?
Because people don't respect animation that isn't aimed towards adults and views kids cartoons as a bunch of fat jokes so hearing the cleaver dialogue surprises people

From what I've heard, this was "supposed" to be an awful tie-in with the abysmal sonic boom video game, but they were given a terrible timeslot that no kid would be up to watch the show at and they just went "f*** it" and made this masterpiece of comedy and old-school references with fandom in-jokes galore.
So Aliciax, fun fact! That episode with the fanfiction is even better/worse than you even realize! You see, the whole thing seems to be a parody of Misery (1990), a movie about a famous author who gets in a car accident and is rescued by a woman who is his “biggest fan”, who takes care of him at her house in the middle of nowhere. He must try to escape her because she’s SO obsessed with him that she’s preventing him from healing properly (and I’m fairly sure there’s an infamous scene where she… I won’t talk about it, it’s equal parts spoilery and fucking brutal) and making him rewrite his books into different, twisted shit to suit her fantasies. The fact that the writers would parody such a gut wrenchingly appalling movie in their kids cartoon and also use it to comment on cringe Sonic fans and such is just so fucking amazing to me.
No, that's not what the writers did. During the production of this episode, the staff of Sonic Boom researched more of the general fandom rather than the Sonic fanbase specifically.

This show was no different from the cartoons and movies that millennials use to watch back in the 90's. There were a lot of adult humor/jokes in pretty much every 90s cartoons that went way over our heads until we became adults to look back at them. They were there mainly for the parents who were watching the show with their kids.
I wonder sometimes whether it's for the parents, or for the writers themselves who think of it, cackle, and can't help but put it in. I think a lot of comedians really make jokes to make themselves laugh.

You paused at the BEST moment and unknowingly set up that Knuckles rebuttal to Amy to just blow your mind even more. Even with the little hint of woke Knuckles earlier from 2:32, the shock that spreads across your face to that final moment is utterly priceless.
Honestly, Knuckles' moments alone are worth watching for. He's the best. Absolutely iconic.

First is that it's a _kid's show_ which is exactly why one of the important things to periodically establish is clear moral principles. Even things like Eggman and the "bro code" for working with Tales is an example of that.
Knuckles is the meathead but his heart is in the right place and he is characterized in the show by having often jarringly insightful commentary. That's because he doesn't think inside the box that everyone else does. That's why this is a topic that his character gets used for.
Amy as the "girlfriend" character is designed where it's easy to mistake moments of personal empowerment as being representative of feminist agenda, when in fact, that runs against the underlying purpose of feminist movements rising up explicitly to establish gender equality.
This moment isn't making fun of feminism so much as it is providing a clear and obvious example of a well-intentioned misstep, followed by an observational correction. It's humorous because it's insightful and it interjects at a point that wouldn't be expected as it undercuts the framework of the scene of the penalty kick.
As a kids show, it's an example where you can interject into every day conversations to prevent unintentional self-sabotage without being adversarial. It's not making fun of feminism at all, it's helping to recognize what it is and what it isn't - which is why you get that in a kid's show.
Kids learn by example of witnessing scenarios and how they play out. They might not get why the scene is funny, but the way it's directed still makes it memorable. This is why good kids shows deal with WAY more complex topics than people assume, because they're not just over-simplified entertainment.

It was a show advertised to kids but it is really for people who played sonic games, games in general and most of all people who HATED the fact that the game of the same name was ABSOLUTELY ASS.
You'd enjoy it.
Side note: Best one out of these is the slight jab at nintendo with Sonic wanting to go tap Princess Peach, but the funniest one is Amy not being able to express herself one. Not only because it shows Sassy Sonic but long time Sonic fans all know Amy has a teetering bridge between Cute and awkward forwardness to Sonic to borderline psychotic.

This show was taken before its time. Or perhaps it was taken down in its prime. Either way, it was set up to fail by placing it early in the morning and onto networks where people wouldn't think to look for it.

To answer your question, yes kids understood what a lot of these jokes meant. I understood a lot when I was young, now the newer generations know wayyyy too much
the show is more tailored for teenagers and young adults
It's sad that the sonic boom games didn't take off because if they did we would've got more of this show. I really miss it

An absolutely amazing show, really wished that it got the attention before. But due to the bad reputation of the games it was dodged by many.
Also Sonic Frontiers is a very fun game, hopefully you do try it out someday. A major step up compared to the last few games in my opinion

If you want a laugh, have a dive into Sonic vs Birds of Prey. Thing is, you can't make fun of fans and a franchise that makes fun of itself and win....... and that's kind of what happened. Basically the BOP backers were salty that their movie flopped and was being out done by a movie about a small, very fast rodent.
It was HILARIOUS Since.... or course the sonic fans jumped on the bandwagon with the BOP defenders..... which really pissed them off lol.

Still one of the best moments in the show is when Sonic and friends tried to beat the heat with a giant fan. Cue about two minutes of flying through the air shenanigans that’s fairly funny on its own.

The real over simplified short version is that Sonic Boom TRIED to be an action show for like one episode, realized they had no animation budget and basically became Sienfeld for kids (in that all the characters where really bitchy and sarcastic and made odd/funny observations instead of fighting)
*Pause* "This is bad" *Unpause* "IT GOT WORSE"
As a kid I got ALL of the jokes, my parents would always watch what I would watch and they even restricted me from watching this show once. Why? Idk

I think this show is a good example of "Yeah, nothing bad happens, so kids are able to watch it," but doesn't necessarily mean it was intended entirely FOR children. This was just a bunch of writers having a good time! It's so great to see people making a good product that can be enjoyed by people of many ages, instead of handcrafting something more on the lifeless side to "suit" children. This show's writing is REALLY WITTY! If you haven't watched it yet, definitely give it a try!!!

Kinda late to this but one show you might like is Scissor Seven. It's one of the best action comedy animes I've ever seen.

I vaguely remember making one with my friend when I was really young. But then again I also did voodoo with my sister when we were kids. Literally had a little doll we'd poke needles into to cause like back-pain to our enemies and stuff.
"Is this a kids show?" Well you see the writers were being smart and made jokes that would try to appeal to older audiences that would get those kinds of jokes, that is the baseline for making a good kids show.
Sonic Boom is what happens you go TOO meta. And honestly I kinda love it.

To be fair for the government officials and possums thing Sticks was saying she believes in all of these conspiracies and this show when I was watching it was on Cartoon Network. Some jokes flew over my head until my age levelled up and there were some quotes I did get then or interpreted differently because 12 year old me didn't compare at all to 19 year old me. The two episodes I remember anymore was when Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles formed a boy band to play rock music because Justin Beaver was using his pop music to take over the minds of girls and when Eggman tried to open a hotel. Other than those two episodes the only quote I remember anymore is "the soup is cold and the salad is hot how is that even possible"
Definitely need a part 2 to this at some point or even just start watching the whole series if you want lol

It's dumb enough that kids will like the action and the dumb jokes but smart enough to know that there's probably someone who's stuck watching it with them, so they throw in some very smart jokes for good measure. It's truly a masterpiece.

A few things to say... But
1:This was written for Sonic fans, and it is the worst thing one may say about how strange of a show this is.
2: Yep, Knuckles is woke in this show, but also is supposed to be dumb, so it can lead to... Things(also, part of the inspiration of a favourite streamer joke of mine "If a woman can do it, so it can Knuckles")
3: ... Also, nobody's gonna comment about she doing a blood oath at seven? Like, I have my own stories about strange wounds like cracking my chin by running at full speed at a door... But a blood oath at seven, that's sure is metal if you ask me.
The fact that she paused right before Knuckles started saying excactly what she was saying during the pause LMAO.
