This is Bonnie's song! I thought Teddy Swims was overdone.
"I close my eyes then I won't see the love you don't feel when you're holding me"
So glad you're listening to it! This is my favorite performance of Bonnie's of this song - from a 2 vol album called Road Tested. Listen to more of the album please! Feelin' of Fallin' is also grat! A worthwhile rabbit hole. She doesn't get enough coverage! For fun also see her duets with John Lee Hooker.

Her rendition has the world-weariness of a person with experience that's wanting love but finally giving up with a person that won't return it. I think her experience in the blues field is what gives this much more of a punch than George Michael's version which is beautifully sung but lacks that weariness.

Interesting story. Mike Reid and Alan Shamblin were both country music songwriters, who according to some accounts originally wrote the song as a fast, bluegrass number. Upon slowing down the tempo considerably, they realized the song gained considerable power and thought about giving the song to one of three artists: Bonnie Raitt, Bette Midler or Linda Ronstadt. Eventually, the song made its way to Bonnie Raitt, who recorded the track for her eleventh studio album, Luck of the Draw (1991). Raitt co-produced the song with Don Was, while Bruce Hornsby provided a piano accompaniment

He played 5 years in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals before retiring in 1975 due to injuries and wanting to concentrate on his music career. He wrote many #1 country hits, top 40, and Grammy winning songs and is in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. This song is one of his best. It’s timeless. Unbelievably; this song was written by NFL Hall of Fame Defensive Lineman, Mike Reid. A true Renaissance man.

Yep, I first saw Bonnie perform at The Main Point in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia in the early 70s. She was awesome even back then.

Bonnie was the first to record this beautiful ballad for her 11th album in '91.Raitt recorded the vocal in just one take in the studio, later saying that it was so sad a song that she could not recapture the emotion: "We'd try to do it again and I just said, 'You know, this ain't going to happen.'". Btw Bruce H playing on this was the icing on the cake and what a flavor.

George Michael's version was after Bonnie's. I listened to her amazing music from 1971 through and beyond my high school years.

More Bonnie. Please. When Bonnie covers a tune, she owns it. One of her greatest is Angel From Montgomery written by John Prine. One of my favorites of hers is Love Me Like a Man. Her father was John Raitt, one of the greatest Broadway musical actorss/singers.
