A masterpiece of a song. The piano is achingly beautiful. The bass just kills it.
But the real standout in this incredible song is the the lyrics. The words speak for themselves. The subject of the song is timeless. Never get tired of listening to it.
That's the golden spot, when melody, rhythm, instrumental artistry, vocal artistry AND LYRICAL power blend into a masterpiece. People are missing out ignoring all the elements.

Tupac listened to a wide range of other musical genres. It is reputed that before his death he was driving his entourage crazy by playing Don McLean's "Vincent" on repeat. He, reportedly, called it the most beautiful thing he'd ever heard. That he'd be listening to this, does not surprise me.
Love Tupac and the respect he had for other artists. Never understood it. Low down dirty shame.
Rap was a new genre created by people who grew up on other genres including the greatest periods of soul funk pop rock and disco. Rap wasn't the self and musically destructive pile of garbage it has since become.

And I used to always say I listened to classical music as a kid, and still did like when I was reading, or studying, or just chilling, and my mates used to think I was off my head. I tried to explain that so many producers got samples, ideas and inspiration from it. Like I had to explain that Adagio for Strings was by Samuel Barber in 1936 and not in fact composed by Tiesto

@@bobtillman5769 Don McLean. I believe his partner set it up on a continuous loop for him, while he lay dying in his hospital bed, so it would be the last thing he ever heard.
Yeah and the last verse he references the “law passed in 64”, That you can pass the civil rights act but it doesn’t necessarily change certain peoples’ minds. Beautifully written song
yeah...and you can pass a civil rights law, and make it worse for the people you're supposed to be helping.
And the line "cause the law don't change another's mind when all it sees at hiring time is the line on the color bar" refers to the line for "Race" on a job application back then.
Just virtue signaling at a time where all of the number 1 shows were mostly african american casts. It was SO *stunning and brave* of him to come out against racism at a time where it didn't really exist.

Dude is a MONSTER on piano. So under appreciated
he's literally one of the best. People debate about elton john vs billy joel piano skills, but Bruce knocks spots off of both of them! Elton even said it himself.
He’s well respected and admired in the music industry as a great. Grew up on his music and it’s so nostalgic

Bruce Hornsby is one of the nicest, best, most eloquent musicians on the planet. He has had quite a long career, with a lot of variety as to who he was playing with. He did spend a couple of years in the Grateful Dead in the early 90's, after opening for them at several shows. The talent is undeniable. Maybe next you guys could do "The Valley Road" or "Mandolin Rain"..

Baltin: And look at how many times "The Way It Is" has been covered. Obviously though the Tupac version, "Changes," is the most iconic.
Hornsby: I love the lyrics, such a positive message, such a soulful message. A cassette showed up in the mail, back in the waning days of the cassette era, from the Shakur Foundation. It was about a year after Tupac had been assassinated. And it was a way dirtier version of this song they had found going through his voluminous archives. I got a note saying, "We found this, it's very special. We wanted you to know about this and also we wanted to discuss with you the publishing splits." So we had a nice back and forth about that. And it just kept on going. "The Way It Is" has been recorded so many times by rap artists. It's something I'm proud of.
One of my all-time favorites; the piano on this is just incredible. If you like this, consider checking out Bruce Hornsby and the Range: "Mandolin Rain."

As to the Tupac reference, we know how creators of intellectual property feel about "borrowers" of their creations: they want their remuneration, as they should. That's why we have copyright laws. LOL
The song is flawlessly played, has inspiring lyrics and a fantastic urgent rhythm to it - it's one of the best hit records of the 1980s

Hornsby had his own #1 hit in December 86 with The Way It Is and won TWO Grammys in 1987, plus had a top 5 hit with Mandolin Rain that year. Huey Lewis had just released Fore! in 86 which included Jacob's Ladder plus ANOTHER #1 hit and a few other top 10 hits in 87. Both artists were peaking in 87 and peaking more than most artists ever do.

Had the pleasure of seeing him in 1988 at the Muny in Saint Louis. The whole first album is AMAZING.
Even Elton John said that Hornsby is way ahead of everyone including himself when it comes to playing the piano, and Elton is no slouch on the keys!!

My dad lived in Virginia when I was growing up and I would go down and stay summers with him (we are originally from PA) Bruce Hornsbys aunt was my dad's landlord.. they had a garden in the back my dad would help take care of.. Bruce and his brother came over to look at the garden one day. It was 1987 too. The year he won a Grammy so he was pretty big at the time.
My family is from Williamsburg, VA. Bruce lives a couple miles from my grandma. His wife's parents used to live next door to my Mom's cousin. When I lived there I saw him and his family several times at various stores and restaurants.
My dad lived in Seaford about 10 minutes from Hampton Roads. Which I think is about an hour from Williamsburg. I used to love visiting there.
I live in Virginia Beach and he played all the time in the bars.

Great reaction! This song was huge when it came out. The really cool thing about Bruce Hornsby is he's self-taught, which is why his fingering looks so unusual when he's playing. He's not using the "right" fingers to hit the "right" keys, but his results are beautiful. You should really see him perform this live!

I read an article stating that Bruce Hornsby became a Tupac fan after hearing Changes. Unfortunately, Tupac was already dead when that happened, so he never got to tell him in person. Personally, I think Tupac's song is a follow on to this one. It's like Bruce Hornsby handed the baton off to Tupac, and he ran with it. Bruce Hornsby's song is hopeful in nature. He repeatedly states that things will never change, but then he goes on to state, "Don't you believe them." I personally interpreted his intent as, "Don't believe the people who tell you that things will never change." Tupac's song, on the other hand, is more of a pessimistic call to action. When I read his lyrics, the message seems to be that things won't change until people take action to change them, but then he goes on to despair about the overwhelming forces that are resisting those changes.
LA Weekly interviewed Hornsby on the anniversary of Tupac's death in 2011, asking about what he thought about Shakur, and his use of Hornsby's song in "Changes":
"I really liked it. Lots of rappers have used “The Way It Is:” Wyclef, E-40, Snoop. I loved what [Tupac] did with it. I just said, 'Go go go'...
"I'm a fan [of Tupac now]. When the Greatest Hits record came out, they sent me it. I had never really dealt with him on a listening level. I was sort of floored by his creativity. I thought he was so clever, and really profound, and deep. There's a lot of gravitas to Tupac's music, to me...
"Here's a funny story. The senator in Virginia for years was Chuck Robb. My wife and I supported him, and got invited to his Christmas party in the late '90s, when Greatest Hits came out. My wife decided we should listen to it on the drive. We get to Robb's house, and there were a bunch of black parking attendants. We opened the car, and - I didn't know this - but the next song to come on was [“Hit Em Up”]. The timing was hilarious. Right when the brothers were ready to take the keys the line “I f***ed your b****/ You fat motherf***er” came on. These guys fell out. They looked at me at first in horror, and then started laughing like crazy..."

There's a part of the video where Bruce just gets a goofy smile on his face despite the serious subject matter, because he's in the groove. There are few things more gratifying as an artist than when you are in that zone regardless of art form..
I still can't hear this without thinking about Tupac's version. I remember when Changes originally released and this was such a huge hit as the original even had a resurgence on the radio.

Saw him live in Southern Oregon. The man plays with uniqueness, elligence and joyfulness. That impression has lasted for decades.
Is still can’t understand why people never knew this song? The 80’s was the best era for music. So many artists from now took samples from this era from so many good artists back in the 80’s.

My choice of music was classic rock and I morphed into a headbanger in the 80's but Hornsby was really an excellent musician and songwriter.

I was in my 20s when this song charted and dismissed it as MOR dross with a decent tune. Listening to the song now (in my 50s) I appreciate the excellent lyrics and the musicianship.
I remember listening to this song in 7th grade and feeling warm and fuzzy thinking about how racism and homophobia will be a thing of the past when my kids are my age. Boy, was I naïve.
Similar for me. Was in my teens when this came out. I liked it then, but man do I appreciate it much more now being in my 50's. The instrumentation is just exquisite.

Tupac had to ask permission from Hornsby to turn his melody into a rap song. In a time when that hadn’t been done before. Hornsby said “of course go ahead.” I’m gonna copy paste something from an article on this topic with a Hornsby interview….

No, I never did. As you know, of course, he recorded his version of my song, which I think was his biggest hit. A year after he was assassinated I got a cassette in the mail from the Shakur Foundation, saying “We found this song, it's going to be the single on his Greatest Hits album coming out.”

Now that is a man and wonderful song writer who has pondered greatly on how F'ed up people can be to other people; and how We can't let that be just " The Way it Is."
This is truly a beautiful song. The lyric are deep and the piano playing is so smooth and nice on the ears.

Oh man, I remember this charting in the UK, mid to late eighties? I remember because the girlfriend I was with at the time went mad for them, so we got tickets to see them at the Hammersmith Odeon (as it was at the time), in London.The support act never turned up and the crowd were getting rowdy, so Bruce Hornsby and the Range came on early to do their set, and they were better than I hoped. They went off and took a break, hoping the support act would turn up. Some people left, after all main act on early who waits for a late support act!? Those that left really missed a great show, cos they never showed and Bruce and the Range came on again, to fill the time. They said something along the lines of "all we have are the songs we started jamming with in garages and rehearsal rooms when we first got together". with that over an hour of 50s, 60s & 70s standards. It was way better that their own set to my ears, and any band that cared enough about their fans to do a double set went to the top of my list for respect. Ended up one of the best concerts I ever went to!

I was scooping ice cream in a parlor, while still in high school when this came out. Still love it today! And….Yes, as others have said, you might want to check out “Mandolin Rain”. Good reaction. I didn’t know PAC sampled this, but I think I understand why.

I got to see Bruce and the Range at the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver shortly after this amazing album was released. They had the entire audience in the palms of their very talented hands.
Love this song. It's just so smoooooth. Gets one all reflective. On that line of thought Brad & Lex, would love you guys to listen to Petula Clark - The World Song (1971). Too good a song not to be heard.

The piano is an amazing percussion instrument, it's a percussion instrument because you press keys connected to hammers that strike steel strings, it also is melodic in it's playing. It encompasses the lowest notes to the highest notes in an orchestra and is used by composers of classical music to write for an orchestra to determine what instruments would be used for various musical passages. It is used in all forms of music, it's biggest drawback is it's size and weight, thus the electric pianos, the newest have actual samples of each note of various classic pianos like the Steinway, Yamaha, Borsendorfer. They can also sample other older electric pianos like the Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer. They can also sample organs like the Hammond and various synthesizers all in much less weight and size.
I play air piano all the time, also air guitar, drums, fiddle, harmonica, accordion, banjo, mandolin and several others. I'm an all around air instrumentalist.
I can play a few actual instruments to some extent, too, but my air playing is truly on another level. Alas, my air talent goes unrecognized. 🙂
Bruce and Tupac together on stage would have been epic. All the music and all the musicians are connected in a endless and unbroken stream through the ages. 🎼
WOW! That would be one of the most awesome times in music HISTORY. That is the type of thing Bruce would be excited to do. He played for a few years with the Grateful Dead after their keyboard player died. He is very well liked! He said he enjoyes the ROYALITIES form Tupac's song CHANGES.
Great song... It was everywhere when it was on the charts (and for months afterwards). Bruce Hornsby played with the Grateful Dead for a time years after this album. I wish I could have seen that.
I won a contest from a local radio station in Maryland when this song came out. The prize was a trip to California, and one of the many things we got to do was go to another radio station in LA and meet Bruce Hornsby. He was being interviewed at this radio station on a show that went out across the entire country. He was a totally normal, humble guy. He thought it was cool that we (my brother and I) were from Maryland because he said he grew up in Virginia, a state that borders Maryland.

Great song! I liked your reaction to this and your question about what original artists think of being sampled. I do know that a lot of people wanted to know what Dolly Parton thought of Whitney Houston’s version of “I will always Love You” and how popular her remake was. She said it was not just flattering but very lucrative, as she received a great deal of royalties, as well as renewed interest and sales of her original song. So there’s that to consider….👍🏼🤑

Ah, 8th Grade memories. I'd be sitting there with my bowl of cereal watching tv before school (either Mtv or VH1) and this BOOGER would come on and wipe itself on my face without fail. Some people wonder why it seems there's more gay people nowadays -- I think it was this song that did it.

To be fair it was more than just a sample Tupac pretty much ripped this great track off,
To be honest I'd never heard of Tupac up to a couple of years ago. So I took it on myself to find out. (By which I mean I asked my Grandson and his parents) May you rest in peace Sir, and may your family find peace. May people come to see that violence has been tried for thousands of years, and it isn't the way. Be safe , and wherever your lives take you, may you get there in good heralth and happiness.

These invoke so many strong feelings and memories of me growing up in the 80's. I've have absolutely loved this song since I was a small boy.
If you listen carefully to the lyrics the song is about social injustice and inequality
I met Bruce backstage at Hammersmith Odeon in London in the late 80s, talented musician. For some reason this was his only big hit (Mandolin Rain notwithstanding), i think he was one of those guys interested more in the integrity of his music than becoming famous or writing commercial hits, per se.
The Valley Road was a big hit in the 80s.
great song, and the nice story behind this, at the time Bruce was taking piano lessons as a kid with his younger brother, at the funeral place at his local village, as the piano room was upstairs above the funeral store, so to get there he had to walk in front of the (empty) coffins every time to get to his piano lessons, a crazy place to go, lol...
Love when people realize that that raw instrument is much better than the electronic version from some studio machine. Its talent and thats whats missing from new music to me . The song is great and always was one of my favorites.
