As others have said, Bonnie is a blues guitar legend, who is also the daughter of Broadway legend John Raitt. This is easily one of my favorite ballads of hers, but you should also react to Angel From Montgomery as well. She has recorded it both solo, and with John Prine, and you can't go wrong with either one. She was someone who's career seemed to be over by the mid 80s, having pretty much thrown it away on booze and cocaine. She cleaned up her act, and made a HUGE comeback in 1989, not unlike Tina Turner, with her album Nick Of Time, which won multiple Grammys, and cemented her legacy as one of the greats. Enjoy the Bonnie Raitt journey!
Bonnie has played with just about everyone. What people don't know is how Prince helped when she was in between labels. They knew each other for years even before Prince was Prince through her brother who was a fixture in the Minneapolis music scene. {Still miss you Steve}
I was going to mention that she was the daughter of John Raitt. My all time favorite Bonnie song is "Something To Talk About". She's a very under-appreciated legends in music. Been a singer , songwriter , guitarist for a long time now.
The very first time I heard this song, I was a very happily married mother of three, but it touched me so deeply that I memorized every word and could sing it immediately. This is just one of those songs. Beautiful and haunting. Nothing but love for Bonnie and this song. AND...this song opened me to the rest of her catalog. Respect!
Nice to know there's a Bruce Hornsby fan here. The guy's one of the finest pianists and songwriters ever. Go as far as to say this song would be diminshed in anyone else's hands. :)
Bonnie can rip your heart out (musically) she can also be very playful. Try "Something to Talk about" or from her very young days; "Blue Bird 🐦" . She also plays a mean slide guitar "The roads my middle name"
I saw her at Red Rocks, near Denver. She was heading to SRV's funeral after. It's still one of my favorite concerts; the circumstances made it even more precious.
I've been listening to Bonnie since the 70s. She was a hero to women then and now. One of the finest steel guitar players, a magnificent vocalist and a woman succeeding in a man's world for 50 years.
This is my favorite song by Bonnie, I used to walk to work everyday, and I learned this bittersweet tune and fell in love with it because it's true. The pianist is Bruce Hornsby (absolutely incredible), and he has some tunes that will blow you two away. Some of Bruce's tunes are Mandolin Rain, The Show Goes On, The Way It Is, Down The Road Tonight, The Old Playground, The River Runs Low, I will Walk With You, The Wild Frontier, and so many others. Thanks Jordan and Amber, see you soon!
Bonnie is a badass! She led the legal battle to get older blues singers/musicians paid for their music in terms of royalties. I think she started an organization/foundation for that cause. She is very well respected in the artists' community.

i love watching you two discover the beauty, soul, wonder and emotions that great music can evoke. if you've been lucky enough to have never experienced what this song so lyrically, melodically and painfully expresses, you are indeed blessed.
Amber, your ability to empathize with others even though you don't relate directly to what they're going through is a special gift. It's part of what makes you such a beautiful soul; please don't feel like you have to apologize for it. Bonnie Raitt is also a beautiful soul, and her gift is connecting emotionally to the music to make it easier to empathize with her.
This is one of the most realistic songs about a breakup that cannot be healed. It is so, so sad to me, as I have been there, as have many of you I'm sure. Thank you for featuring Bonnie, she is an incredible talent.
This is an incredibly powerful song, and Bonnie delivers. "ANGEL FROM MONTGOMERY" is my all time favorite song she does. You should watch her performance with John Prine who wrote the song.
"I Can't Make You Love Me" is one of the most emotional, out-of-love/breakup songs ever. Bonnie Raitt's singing and Bruce Hornsby's piano playing are perfectly mournful. Other master ballads in this genre are "Un- Break My Heart" by Toni Braxton", "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" by Elton John, "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here" by Deborah Cox, "Even Now" by Barry Manilow, "Somebody Like You" by Adele, and "A House Is Not A Home" by Luther Vandross.

I saw her one night at KU in a blizzard. Almost no one showed up. She just called us all down from the cheap seats and let everybody just sit around on floor and the stage. We'd just ask her to play songs and she would. She had just put out an album with lots of horns on it and someone kept asking her to play some of those songs. It was just Bonnie, Freebo, and a drummer. The first couple of times Bonnie just reminded them that she had no horns and couldn't do those songs. After the third request she fumed "Do you know my music or just read the album liners, I got no fucking horns!" It was my most memorable concert.
I first heard Angel From Montgomery when Addison Agen sang it so beautifully on The Voice. Thought that was the best it could be sung, … until I heard Bonnie.

@@markriggs4024 I didn't either until yesterday, and I've liked Hornsby since he released "The Way it Is." I've always loved the piano on "Can't Make You Love Me," but I never made the connection.
This is quite the departure from Bonnie's catalog. She is one of the best female blues artist ever. She cut her teeth touring with some of the greats. I think you'll be surprised when you dig into her body of work. A soulful voice and slide guitar chops that set her apart from any other. A suggestion for female Friday, (Susan Tedeschi) if you haven't already . Maybe start with her early stuff like "Hurt So Bad", "Little By Little", "Rock Me Right" or "Just Won't Burn" from her first album. You'll love her and then follow her career with Derick Trucks her husband. I always enjoy your reactions to music that I love as well. Happy trails guys!
Yeah, it get’s to me too how this seems to be the only song of Bonnie’s that reactors play and yet it’s so unrepresentative of her body of work. They’re really missing out on her best songs.
Love this song of hers and there's definately no mistaking Bruce Hornsby's signature piano playing on this track. If you haven't already reacted to Bruce Hornsby you need to listen to Mandolin Rain and The Way it Is...both open up with his killer piano playing.
Yes cry!!!! If you can't feel the emotion and pain she is singing you arent alive! I was waitging for the words to hit you Amber...hand to your heart and I knew you got it. I cry every time I hear this and I own the album. And play it weekly.
25 yrs ago I would play this song while sitting in the dark and sob because I felt every note in my soul, as I lived in a loveless marriage . I've been solo for 24 years now.
This song is a serious tear jerker. I've cried to it many times. This whole album was a triumph of great music. So glad you guys enjoyed her. Many of us have been her fans for decades. This lady has talent and skill running out her ears. No one else has mentioned this, so I have to. I can't stay away from the duet she did with Jackson Browne: My Opening Farewell. It's simply stunning, and the ending with two great guitarists finger picking at the same time on different parts of the guitar is just fabulous. Please give it a shot.
For Raitt, the song was notoriously difficult to sing, due to its required vocal range, difficult phrasing and breathing, and the emotional content involved. At the televised Grammy Awards of 1992 Raitt performed it in an even more austere setting than on record, with just her and Hornsby highlighted. As she negotiated the final vocal line, she let out a big audible and visible sigh of relief that she had successfully gotten through it. Her live performance of the song was released on the 1994 album Grammy's Greatest Moments Volume III. Raitt has continued to sing the song in all her concert tours: I mean, 'I Can't Make You Love Me' is no picnic. I love that song, so does the audience. So it's almost a sacred moment when you share that, that depth of pain with your audience. Because they get really quiet, and I have to summon ... some other place in order to honor that space. - Raitt, 2002 NPR interview
I used to play this on piano and sing it, and yeah, it's a toughie. The word "make" is awkward that high and held out. It makes me feel better to know it was tough for her, too. 🙂 ... I couldn't possibly do it today, too out of shape.
This lady has to be in her 70s and her voice is still just as golden as when she first began. A powerhouse on her own, she sings duets with Jackson Browne, David Crosby, Graham Nash, and a host of other 60s/70s artists… man, she makes my ears happy.
Bonnie's cover of "Runaway" is my favorite. It's a rock'n song, not slow! Bonnie is a killer guitar player. Fender has a signature edition Bonnie Raitt Stratocaster.
I had the fortune to be at Bonnie's KU concert right after someone had stolen her bottle neck slide the night before in Hayes, Kansas. She was pissed. Then six months later I was at her concert in KC and she had just had her stolen slide returned to her. She was so happy (and pretty drunk) that she played some SERIOUS slide that night.
Bonnie’s guitar cred is seriously undervalued. She’s an amazing blues guitar player. “Something to Talk About” is her biggest hit. You guys will like it.
I love your reaction. When I saw you close your eyes, I thought “ they’re all in “. For me, the word “authentic “ comes to mind when describing the depth of her performance. And that comes across in her live performances too.
FINALLY - BONNIE! You're going to get a ton of suggestions - all good - but if you want the full artistry revealed, go for these two: (1) If you want to bawl your eyes out, you MUST hear the studio version of "Love Has No Pride". It is astonishingly raw and heartbreaking. (2) If you want the blues vixen, go with "Love Me Like A Man". I challenge you not to blush :-) And so many others, Bonnie is worthy of a deep dive like you can't believe: "You've Been In Love Too Long", Guilty", Real Man", Angel From Montgomery", "Been Too Long At The Fair", "Thing Called Love", and on and on. Enjoy!
These are terrific suggestions! I was going to mention most of them, but you beat me to it! Been To Long At the Fair is gorgeous. Love Me Like A Man is a great bluesy one.
I think you will love KD Lang’s “Constant Craving”….after you listen to more Bonnie. I met Bonnie while working a number of years ago. Down to earth, super nice. Just hanging around backstage at a venue I worked at. She was also great friends with the late great John Prine. “Angel from Montgomery” is a must listen to.
Love Bonnie Raitt. She is a great live performer. I know a lot of people will recommend songs from Nick of Time but I also love her earlier work, particularly the Sweet Forgiveness album. Every track is great but I will still repeatedly play "About to Make Leave Home", "Runaway", "My Opening Farewell" and "Louise".
I’m right there with you ! Her singing on those early albums keeps me checking back on them. The way she sang straight from the heart never fails to warm mine up, especially when I hear her sweet younger voice.
This is my favorite song by Bonnie❤Love it. Her voice is like butter. I feel the same as you about relating to it, since I've been with my hub for 33 yrs. I did relate when the song first came out because I was still searching for the right person.Thank you for doing this song...love her.❤
I can absolutely relate to this song. I was deeply in love with someone and they just did not love me back. I literally called off work, she went to work. I packed all my things and left and left this song on repeat so she wld hear it when she came in. I knew she didn't love me and no matter how hard I tried, she just didn't. It took everything in me to walk away. It's hard for me to hear this.
I can relate. I was married for nearly 8 years....started being a royal shit to her. Not in a physically abusive sense, but taking her for granted and I was cheating on the regular. Something inside me was broken and I chose to bury it rather than be a man and talk to her about it. My last affair was what broke me...I was stranded away from her for 3 weeks. And the woman I was with made me think about what I got wrong. So I returned to my wife for a month....quietly packed and I still recall the morning I left. I turned and held her close and kissed her....said "Thank You for so much" and I flew back to the U.S. That was going on 2 years ago. I still feel gutted when I think of how big of an asshole I was. But I realize that I didn't love myself so I wasn't truly loving her anymore. So much regret....I pray she finds the happiness I could never give her.
Hi, guys! Great reaction to Bonnie Raitt. Lots of good suggestions in the comments. Talking about smooth singers...you need to react to Sade (pronounced Shah-day). "Smooth Operator" is a must (song features horns)! Then listen to "No Ordinary Love" and "Sweetest Taboo." You'll love love love her sound! 💖
Bonnie earned her Grammy with this one. Perfect message, mood, and words…so deep you want to float away in the …sigh…sad feeling..but it feels good to get a little misty eyed as you said. This is a song we hear a lot during late night love dedications on the radio, when someone is finally giving up or about ready to give up and say goodbye.
Bonnie has a lot of great songs. Angel From Montgomery is my favorite besides this song. If you want to hear something a little more upbeat, check out Thing Called Love or Something To Talk About. Love you guys♥️✌️
Something To Talk About next from Bonnie. Bruce Hornsby on piano. "She just wanted to do it one time and go into the truth, and she knew that would diminish with each subsequent take. Aside from Raitt's vocal performance, the most celebrated and iconic element of the song is Bruce Hornsby's piano part. Raitt called Hornsby and asked him to play on it, to which he immediately agreed."
It's a nice song, and Bonnie sings it beautifully ... but you won't truly be knocked out by her 'til you see her singing and playing brilliant slide guitar!
No doubt Bonnie has given us one of the great voices in pop music.. but her superb guitar playing is why she is counted among the all-time greats. She learned from (and performed with) many of the great early blues guitarists of the mid 60s and early 70s. My favorite is her live performance of "Love Me Like A Man".
Song was written by Mike Reid, who was a star linebacker at Penn State in the late '60s and then for the Cincinnati Bengals and played in two Pro Bowls in 1972-'73. He's in the College Football Hall of Fame. After he retired from pro football he had a pretty good career as a songwriter and country music artist.
I'm so happy you got to Bonnie Raitt. This song is one of my favorites -- Bruce Hornsby is on the piano. If you get a chance, check the "Bonnie Raitt & Bruce Hornsby" live version. Don't worry Jordan; Bonnie can speed things up for you! She's one of the best bottleneck slide guitarists around. Try "Love Me Like a Man" or "Something To Talk About".
this is one of the saddest songs ever...no stronger feeling than unrequited love. its beautiful and emotional and cuts to the bone...a masterpiece from Bonnie
You finally found Bonnie!! She's been around since the sixties and is a highly regarded blues guitarist. Since I Fell For You is one of her earliest songs if you want to hear her younger voice.
Two of her songs a must - Give it up or let me go (live version from 1989 in Oakland, CA) and Let's give 'em something to talk about. Love, love Bonnie. And she plays a mean, badass slide.
I've always loved her cool raspy voice. This song actually has a wild background. The idea for the song came to to the writer while reading an article about a man arrested for getting drunk and shooting at his girlfriend's car. The judge asked him if he had learned anything, to which he replied, "I learned, Your Honor, that you can't make a woman love you if she don't."] Raitt recorded the vocal in just one take in the studio, later saying that it was so sad a song that she could not recapture the emotion: "We'd try to do it again and I just said, 'You know, this ain't going to happen.'" So cool.
I really like you two. This is a heartbreaking song. My wife is a big Bonnie Raitt fan and we got to see her a couple years back and she is phenomenal in concert.

Good pick! Yes!
@@lindaclegg3489 Aaron Neville, Bonny Raitt, and Greg Allman, "Tell It Like It Is" Wonderful!
Yes...Aaron Neville has a one in a million voice.
Mesmerizing I love her voice
A great song can hypnotize you, and put you there. This is one great song.
The great Bruce Hornsby on piano- he's worth taking a listen to as well!
Truth. He's amazing!
I did not know Bruce Hornsby was on the piano!!!
@@markriggs4024 I didn't either until yesterday, and I've liked Hornsby since he released "The Way it Is." I've always loved the piano on "Can't Make You Love Me," but I never made the connection.
Great distinctive piano style that you can identify just after a few bars.
It's rare that you can hear a piano player and automatically know who it is. Bruce Hornsby is one of those truly gifted musicians.
So glad you mention Susan Tedeshi! She will be great for Female Friday. She also has an amazing cover of Angel From Montgomery!
Yeah, it get’s to me too how this seems to be the only song of Bonnie’s that reactors play and yet it’s so unrepresentative of her body of work. They’re really missing out on her best songs.
I saw Susan Tedeschi back in the early 2000's with Buddy Guy, and BB King. What a concert.
Yes, Yes, Yes, Susan Tedeschi
@@ButterflyDance444 Yes she does. Her rendition of Bob Dylan's "Don't think Twice" is great too. Susan could sing Christmas carols and make you cry!
Love this song of hers and there's definately no mistaking Bruce Hornsby's signature piano playing on this track. If you haven't already reacted to Bruce Hornsby you need to listen to Mandolin Rain and The Way it Is...both open up with his killer piano playing.
Yesss thank you!
Great mention on Bruce!!
I love the live version of her and Bruce. 🔥❤️
Bruce Hornsby is such a talent. Such. A. Talent!
Bonnie Raitt puts a live, beating heart on the table and sings out its pain, longing, and resignation. Masterful singing!
Yes cry!!!! If you can't feel the emotion and pain she is singing you arent alive! I was waitging for the words to hit you Amber...hand to your heart and I knew you got it. I cry every time I hear this and I own the album. And play it weekly.
Another excellent one by her is ‘Something To Talk About’. It’s faster and much more upbeat. Won a Grammy too!
Her uptempo Blues-based music is where she really shines. Please look into her more!
Exactly ! Slow and sappy is not really her main style. Her feel of a good beat is one of her best talents; and her band is so tight !
The greatest compliment you can give an artist is that their art made you feel something.
Not only is she an amazing singer but also an amazing guitarist. I personally like her cover of the song Angel From Montgomery
25 yrs ago I would play this song while sitting in the dark and sob because I felt every note in my soul, as I lived in a loveless marriage . I've been solo for 24 years now.
Nothing worse than being alone in a relationship. I hope you have found peace, and have learned you are never alone.
I would play it too after fights and my husband would say the most vile things. I tried to love a broken man.
I have been there too.
May have already been said, but her slide guitar playing specifically is considered one of the top in music.
I can just barely listen to it. It's really painful....as besutiful as it is. it hurts 💔
😢😢
@@marthalowe1556 same
For Raitt, the song was notoriously difficult to sing, due to its required vocal range, difficult phrasing and breathing, and the emotional content involved. Raitt has continued to sing the song in all her concert tours:
I mean, 'I Can't Make You Love Me' is no picnic. I love that song, so does the audience. So it's almost a sacred moment when you share that, that depth of pain with your audience. Because they get really quiet, and I have to summon ... some other place in order to honor that space.
- Raitt, 2002 NPR interview
Thanks for the tip, here’s the link to that performance:

@@Koolaukoa Hey, thanks for finding that! 👍
Wow😭
I used to play this on piano and sing it, and yeah, it's a toughie. The word "make" is awkward that high and held out. It makes me feel better to know it was tough for her, too. 🙂 ... I couldn't possibly do it today, too out of shape.
Makes me cry. Beautiful voice.
One of my 5 all-time favorite songs - a Masterpiece
Check out some of her earlier works. Very bluesy and her slide guitar playing is so gorgeous!
This lady has to be in her 70s and her voice is still just as golden as when she first began. A powerhouse on her own, she sings duets with Jackson Browne, David Crosby, Graham Nash, and a host of other 60s/70s artists… man, she makes my ears happy.
72 this November.
This is one of the most beautifully sad songs, ever. Bonnie’s voice is perfection.
Such a beautiful song sung by an amazing singer! My favorite song by her.
Bonnie is a tremendous guitar player
She’s also a great guitar player
Bonnie is such a phenomenally gifted singer/songwriter. This song is bittersweet for me.....
Bonnie's cover of "Runaway" is my favorite. It's a rock'n song, not slow! Bonnie is a killer guitar player. Fender has a signature edition Bonnie Raitt Stratocaster.
That’s a gem. Her covers usually eclipse the originals.
She sings this song in a purely honest way. That's what makes it so compelling.
what was making Amber sad was her ability to feel EMPATHY. This is a tough song to listen to if you have ever had a tough break up.
Also, Bruce Hornsby plays piano on this song. Amazing.
Bonnie has the same natural way of singing as the late, wonderful Eva Cassidy. Beautiful.
This song is one of the most beautifully written sad songs that just rips your heart out ever written. It makes me cry every single time I hear it
She's the greatest bottleneck slide guitar player in my humble opinion
You, John Lee Hooker and BB King :-)
Amen to that
Indeed. BB King agrees.
@Peter Thompson. I love Bonnie, and she is an excellent slide player, but nobody comes close to Duane Allman.
Bonnie Raitt - Something to talk about, is also very good. Bonnie has a lot of great songs
I love the way she and Dennis Quaid flirt in that music video.
The Thing Called Love is the one with DQ. Man, had a brain blip there!
@@KC-WoF that's one of my favorites as well
She got the great pipes from her Opera star father, John Raitte. Super talent.
Bonnie sings with pure intimacy . . . . she makes you feel as if you are overhearing something that is private and between two broken souls.
Yes, U got the pain..this is a real Blues!
Her song "Thing Called Love" is alot of fun, and so is the music video with Dennis Quaid!!!
Another great song from Bonnie, my favourite, "Love me Like a Man"
What a perfect song. Her version of John Prine's "angel from Montgomery" is amazing
My favorite
Oh yeah that's my favorite also.❤❤❤
That was a great one.
Great suggestion yes!
I just saw her in concert a few weeks ago and she obviously played this one. Just amazing.
This song perfectly sums up a heartbreak. Bonnie is a f*cking legend. They sure don't make music like they used to.
Love Has No Pride ! Yes!
I LOVVVVVVE KD Lang!! Oh they have to react to her songs. She has so many good ones.
The way she sang straight from the heart never fails to warm mine up, especially when I hear her sweet younger voice.
amber..i just love the way you feel it , hear it and understand it !! you guys are my favorite reactors..stay real
This song makes you melt.
That’s how you know a song/record is great, when it makes you feel the emotion behind it, wether you can relate to it or not.
Bonnie is one of the most authentic singers. Her father was a legendary Broadway star, John Riatt.
A deeply touching and heartbreaking song. I see in your face, Amber, that you get it.
I'm sorry. 💗
This lady has soft and smooth, but also has rasp, guitar CRED, and the respect of everyone in the business. She is the real deal.
Sade is so great. One of the 80s best.
Bonnie makes you feel the pain she is singing about. That is a great artist.
Bonnie has a lot of great songs. Angel From Montgomery is my favorite besides this song. If you want to hear something a little more upbeat, check out Thing Called Love or Something To Talk About. Love you guys♥️✌️
Angel from Montgomery is a great John Prine song.
@@bryonsmith7352 yes it is
Something To Talk About next from Bonnie.
Defensive tackle, not linebacker.
This song was truly meaningful to me, in a time of my life when my marriage was struggling and ultimately ended.
This song! It's art. You feel it.
I've been waiting so long for your reaction to Binnie Raitt!! She has so many awesome tunes, LOVE ME LIKE A MAN!! PLEASE 😁😁😁
A very sexy song!
That "If you don't" just hits you right in the gut everytime. Especially if you've been there before.
She has ALWAYS been very underrated as a performer and in my opinion one of the best. Don't know why because she is an icon
I really like you two. This is a heartbreaking song. My wife is a big Bonnie Raitt fan and we got to see her a couple years back and she is phenomenal in concert.
