She spent a LOT of time putting in the work before she became successful. And her slide tone is impeccable. I respect singers who can also write and play an instrument exceptionally well.
This was written by Ex-Cincinnati Bengal All Pro Defensive End Mike Reid. He left the NFL in his Prime because he didn't want to mangle his hands (Pianist). In 1984, Reid won a Grammy Award for Best Country Song with "Stranger in My House", which was recorded by Ronnie Milsap. Reid would also contribute compositions to artists such as Marie Osmond, Tanya Tucker, Collin Raye, Alabama, and Conway Twitty other than Raitt. People laughed when he retired. I was born and raised in Cincinnati and at the time we all thought he was a certified idiot. We were the idiots.
I was lucky to see Bonnie in concert twice over the years. She’s one of the most talented musicians ever to take the stage. Definitely worth a deeper dive into her catalog.
One of the most heart-wrenching ballads of all time. Bruce Hornsby's tasteful keys and Bonnie's earnest vocal put this one into the top tier. Can never listen to this tune and not choke up.
Bonnie did this song a capella on Saturday Night Live the weekend after Stevie Ray Vaughn died in the helicopter crash. Her manager was also on that copter, and Bonnie introduced this as her managers favorite song. She cried during the taping.
Can't wait to see this. One of her best, plus a benefit of Bruce Hornsby on the piano in this one. Another of Bonnie's hits worthy of a listen IMO is "Something to Talk About!"
A&A, you’ll love Bonnie’s "Something to Talk About", “Angel From Montgomery”(cover), "Not the Only One" and “A Thing Called Love”(cover)!!! She is known for her voice and slide guitar!!! Saw her in concert July 1990, great show!!!!
Bonnie is the coolest chick around. Incredible voice, great slide guitar player, seriously underrated blues player/singer and sexy as hell. Please listen to some of her earlier stuff, including the iconic Love Me Like a Man and also Give it Up (or Let Me Go) - both the recorded versions. By the way, that’s Bruce Hornsby playing piano on this song.
It's an emotional masterpiece and one of the most covered songs since this became a hit for her. Bonnie won song of the year Grammy just last year for "Just Like That" which is an even harder tearjerker.
Her father John Raitt was a legendary Broadway actor and singer with a booming baritone. Bonnie first made a name for herself in the early seventies for her astonishing voice, slide guitar chops and deep love and knowledge of blues music. She was part of the community of singers and musicians who made Laurel Canyon their home. She never became the megastar that many of her companions did in the 70’s and 80’s and for a time it looked like she would never achieve the stardom her talent and peer hype thought she would. But then came the album “Nick of Time” which “I Can’t Make You Love Me” is off of. The album was a monster success selling in multiple millions and virtually sweeping the Grammys. She is now rightfully considered a legend.
@@davidogg5269 Not sure if there is a video available but PBS did a "Great Performances" with Bonnie and John. Each sang their own songs and then they did a bunch together. It was great.
8th grade, '76, Bonnie Raitt's "Runaway" was one of our jam albums. I was fortunate enough to meet her one afternoon in a bar and have a drink with her and everyone else besotted with her, in about '81 or so? Never forget her auburn hair and creamy skin against a moss green satin cowboy shirt. I was in total awe and stuttering. She was like a dang goddess.
Bruce Hornsby has such a distinctive way of playing the piano. There's a confidence behind each note, which isn't to say that he just bangs away on the keyboard. He plays with nuance. It's like the music flows directly out of fingers and they just know exactly what to do. His music with his band (The Range) is definitely worth checking out.
Hornsby's breakout hit, and signature song, "The Way It Is", almost didn't make the cut for his album. Great story how it went from almost cut to album title track to # 1 on Billboard U.S. Hot 100.
Bonnie Raitt is my queen. As a small woman with a startlingly deep, rich voice, I admire her sound. The edge of cigarettes and whiskey in her voice is sooooo KILLER. "Something to Talk About" is a good flipside to this one.
This is one of those songs where you just sit in the dark, and listen. Bonnie Raitt NEVER disappoints. And you should hear her play blues slide guitar - the woman kicks ass.
Interesting fact about this song: this is a one take wonder. Bonnie was worried she wouldn't be able to do the song justice of she had to do a lot of takes. The engineers cleared the studio, dimmed the lights, and she did it the first time.
She won the Grammy for best song last year! Such a long and stellar career. She was never a “shooting star”…but solid, all the way through. Top-tier slide guitar player as well. Among the best blues players and singers. Saw her in concert last year….DAMN she was good! Still top drawer. And her warm and genuine personality shone. It was a real love fest between the audience and her. She made a 5,000 seat theater feel so intimate.
Yeah, remember some young guy,I think he was a writer for some music rag, said that she shouldn’t have won,he called her some no name singer, jeez some people should just shut their mouths until they learn something.
Saw her in concert on a joint bill with Lyle Lovett and His Large Band. What a great evening! They both did a long set then they did a set together. Their styles and voices mixed incredibly well.
Been waiting for the opportunity to suggest Eva Cassidy. She died young, in 1996, but her legacy has literally grown exponentially over the years, and is still growing. Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Fields of Gold, Autumn Leaves, just to start. Her voice was one that comes once in a generation, truly. You will be mesmerized.
Autumn Leaves, Fields of Gold, Where Has the Time Gone, Wade in the Water, and the fun, upbeat Hallelujah I Just Love Him So ❤😊. She does a couple covers of Cyndi Lauper's that are incredible too.
Not a song but a singer's life story, they should react to Nightline's The Eva Cassidy musical story (18 min) Sometimes talent isn't enough and life isn't always fair.
Bonnie Raitt is a straight up legend. Her live album, Road Tested is a masterpiece. Also, highly recommend her duet with Norah Jones on Tennessee Waltz.
A great song and a great performance by two talented people. My "Six degrees of Kevin Bacon" to Bonnie Raitt. Mike Reid played on the Penn State football team while I was at PSU. So one night some guy is sitting in the dorm lounge at midnight playing the piano keeping me awake. I strolled down to tell him to cut it out. I opened the door and saw this huge guy playing the piano and realized it was Reid. I quietly shut the door and went back to my room. True story!
Bruce Hornsby is on piano for this one, and I would highly highly recommend you guys hit "Mandolin Rain" by him! The lyrics, vocals, and musicianship on that track are absolutely top-notch!
The Pianist is Bruce Hornsby. He is a singular talent; his piano sounds like no one else. If you want to hear Bruce absolutely SLAY on piano: 'The Show Goes On' - 'Rainbow's Cadillac' - 'The Way It Is' - 'Mandolin Rain' - 'Long, Tall, Cool One' - 'Spider Fingers' - 'Harbor Lights' (get the 7-minute version). Bruce attracts and works with some of the best musicians on the planet. You just cannot go wrong. Enjoy! 😉
i am going to be honest when she finally got the accolades she deserved i cried! her grammy performance was incredible!i thought she was wonderful! and i am crying now! 59 years old!
I had the pleasure of seeing her play live a dozen years ago. Marc Cohn opened. He said, “She makes it look so easy that it’s easy to miss the fact that she’s a total badass”.
Bonnie Raitt's still going strong. Her song, "Just Like That" won the Song of the Year Grammy last year. You should check it out, it's a real tearjerker.
Now they got to do "The Way It Is" or "Mandolin Rain" by Bruce Hornsby (who played piano on the track). "The Way It Is" will likely be another "I Got The" moment.
As of 2023, Raitt has received 13 competitive Grammy Awards, from 30 nominations, as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She ranked No. 50 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Singers of All Time", and ranked No. 89 on the magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time." American singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose wide musical range encompassed blues, folk, rhythm and blues, pop, and country rock
No matter how many times I've heard this song over all these years ~ it still breaks my heart. For me, much of the power of this songs lyrics is Knowing what it Feels like to be in the leaving and being left position. To feel them at the same time.... 😥
Bruce Hornsby on the piano and Bonnie's powerful and sensitive vocals. The pain in her voice was killing me the first time I heard it. One of the best collaborations ever. If you do more videos with either Artist, I'm here for it.
I forgot how awesome this song is, not only in the silky smooth delivery, but also the pure and raw emotion. S tier all day for me. I’ve been pleading for a while now - you really need to check out her version of John Prine’s classic “Angel From Montgomery.” Bonnie’s a lot younger on that one and her delivery is epic.
Bruce Hornsby on the piano. There’s a really good live performance of this song with Bonnie and Bruce floating around on YT which is well worth checking out. But PLEASE more Bonnie! Her catalog is very deep, and she won a Grammy last year ( her 13th, I believe ). Also one of the best bottleneck slide players around.
Just want to say….Thank You So Much. Bonnie is an important artist in music history. Unfortunately, reactor’s don’t discover this masterpiece because of Teddy Swims’ cover. Andy and Alex, you must discover Bonnie’s live performances. A badass blues/slide guitar master!
I've wanted to see you guys react to this for some time. Truly one of the great break up songs of the R&R/R&B era. There have been others who have attempted to cover this song, but Bonnie's ability to open her heart, and her wisdom clearly indicate a mature woman that has been through something. There is Bonnie's version then there is every other version.
In my Top 5 female musicians. Her slide dobro work is so good over many years, and her voice is so sweeet with a touch of raspy! And her old John Prine covers are a constant friend.
I only saw Bonnie Rait once, when she opened for Eric Clapton on the Cradle Tour. She just shredded the guitar solos and got a well deserved standing ovation at the end. I still recall her telling the crowd before she left the stage, “ you people are in for a real treat tonight with Eric, it’s going to be guitar heaven up here”. She was right, but it was guitar heaven listening to her as well
I had all of her albums. Saw her in concert twice. She was practically the only girl playing electric guitar. Started at the clubs near Harvard. She played with all the best musicians of the day. One old bluesman said some play blues but she would get lost in the blues. She sang Bessy Smith, homage to great black blues singer. One of the best of our generation. A true musician. And she was beautiful.
She’s a phenomenon! Got to see her in concert a dozen or so years ago on Jackson Browne’s birthday and she did one of his songs. She was personable and delivered a perfect performance. One of the best artists and most respected artists.
Bruce Hornsby on the keys. He is a fantastic piano player that had some great hits in the 80's and 90's. He also played piano with the Grateful Dead in the early 90's. Check out Bruce Hornsby and the Range song "The Way it Is" or "Mandolin Rain". And as always live Grateful Dead in 1991 and 1992 if you want to hear him with the Dead.
Bonnie is a guitar girl all the way. Try "Something to Talk About." It's probably my favorite from her, and it never gets old...and never fails to bring a big smile to my face.
Bonnie Raitt has been one of my idols for decades. Along with her bluesy vocals I love her slide guitar playing, which is not featured on this particular song. That's Bruce Hornsby playing piano on this. She has worked with him a lot over the years. Another song of hers I really love is Love Me Like a Man. That song just rocks out for me. She has a very long repertoire of music! Some of my other faves of hers are Love Sneakin up on You, Women Be Wise, Love Has No Pride, Angel From Montgomery, Need You Tonight, Thing Called Love, Longing in their Hearts.... Well, hell, just about everything she's ever done! Lol You can't go wrong with Bonnie!
Bonnie's one of the great slide guitarists, as recognized by other blues greats. She's also a terrific singer. Her voice is immediately recognizable and she knows _exactly_ how to use it. She's a musician.
This song is gorgeous by everyone who ever did it! But.... Her version is one of those in the zone perfect moments in music. Like Etta James' At Last! This is perfection. It cannot be bettered! She was 'in the zone' the whole thing was!!!
'Reaches right around your heart and just SQUEEZES. 'Not a hateful goodbye, just so sorrowful. Lamentful resignation. Bonnie Raitt is a wonderful vocalist; i love her phrasing. She's so, so soulful. She also plays a fairly wicked slide guitar. Maybe give this song a try: Something to Talk About live version. I enjoyed your reaction. The piano is Bruce Hornsby, btw.
Instant recognition of Hornsby on keys. No one plays like him and no one sings like Bonnie. The truth in her voice is so available. S tier for sure guys.
Bruce Hornsby on keys....his first major hit was "The Way It Is". Her rabbit hole is very deep and fantastic
Dude that's wild, the piano towards the end had me only thinking bruce hornsby. They have to check out the way it is at somepoint
Yes more Bruce Hornsby! Bruce Hornsby and Pat Metheny did a great concert…
and he played with the Dead for a while in the early 90s
I always wondered about her rabbit hole.

Not enough good things are said about Bonnie Raitt, given her longevity, great slide guitar, and awesome voice.
She is greatly acknowledged yet somehow still underrated
For real🙌 Living Legend💃🎸
She spent a LOT of time putting in the work before she became successful. And her slide tone is impeccable. I respect singers who can also write and play an instrument exceptionally well.
She was B.B. King's favorite slide player.
She learned a lot of her slide playing from Lowell George. SEE HERE: th-cam.com/video/lvelsr9vHhI/w-d-xo.html

This is one of those transcendent songs. If you are not emotionally affected by it, you have no soul. Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
Songs don't often give me chills, but I'm with you. This song gets me every time.
FACT 💯
Amen.
TOTALLY Agree!
I agree - even the instrumental saxophone version by Candy Dulfer is brilliant.
If one has ever experienced unrequited love, Bonnie's rendition brings a lump to the throat and a tear to the eye. The heartache is palpable.
Yep. Story of my life.
sigh
Makes me cry every time.
She’s a legendary blues guitarist. Deserves more 💐

written by Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin.
as long as he didn't hate on Skyline or LaRosa's, I'm good with his reasoning
Thank you for the inside baseball....or football rather of this song.
But you still got Lapham!
Mike Ried also performed this, playing piano, on Austin City Limits (I believe).
Bruce Hornsby on the piano in this song is the icing on the cake.
Your first time hearing Bonnie Raitt? She's one of the top female vocalists ever, a true gem. And now you know.
And top tier blues slide guitarist!

Angel From Montgomery was my introduction to Bonnie. I cried. John Prine's lyrics amazing. It is the saddest song I know.
Angel From Montgomery. Yes yes.
Also her cover Runaway.
Angel from Montgomery with Raitt and John Prine is fantastic.
I love her cover of Buffalo Springfield's Bluebird!

I still recall her telling the crowd before she left the stage, “ you people are in for a real treat tonight with Eric, it’s going to be guitar heaven up here”. She was right, but it was guitar heaven listening to her as well
Y’all owe it to yourselves to fall down the rabbit hole that is Bonnie Raitt. She’s an outstanding vocalist and slide guitarist.
Prince referred to this song as "Bonnies masterpiece".
Bruce Hornsby is playing that gorgeous piano...truly an amazing song, and her voice is just beautiful.
Her song "Nick Of Time" is fantastic!!
Bonnie is a guitar girl all the way. Try "Something to Talk About." It's probably my favorite from her, and it never gets old...and never fails to bring a big smile to my face.
Bonnie is one of the best slide guitarists ever! Watch love me like a man and you won't be disappointed ICON!!
Agree!
This song has always made me tear up. It's stunning. Bonnie is brilliant. ❤❤
Bruce Hornsby, another great artist, played the piano on this recording - which was recorded in one take. Amazing.
Her guitar playing is as impressive as that piano is!
Bonnie's one of the great slide guitarists, as recognized by other blues greats. She's also a terrific singer. Her voice is immediately recognizable and she knows _exactly_ how to use it. She's a musician.
I've had the pleasure of seeing her song this live with Bruce Hornsby on piano. Exquisite.
I have never tired of her 1972 album 'Give It Up' and everyone I've ever played it for has loved it. Bonnie is legend✨
Nothing seems to Matter is another great song from her on that album.
This song is gorgeous by everyone who ever did it! But.... Her version is one of those in the zone perfect moments in music. Like Etta James' At Last! This is perfection. It cannot be bettered! She was 'in the zone' the whole thing was!!!
Bonnie Raitt... Let's Give Them Something To Talk About!! Very cute!!💜
Yesssss. Love that one as well!
Maybe give this song a try:
Something to Talk About
live version.
I enjoyed your reaction.
The piano is Bruce Hornsby, btw.
Instant recognition of Hornsby on keys. No one
plays like him and no one sings like Bonnie. The
truth in her voice is so available. S tier for sure guys.
