Studio work is weird. I saw someone criticizing her on the video of the original over that "first take only" story. What they didn't understand is that when you're in the studio and do 5, 6, 7+ takes, it's just work at that point. You no longer feel like you're in the moment, it feels more technical than natural or emotional. An eventual perfect take or cleaning up parts later is part of many perfect recordings, but a perfect first take is the greatest way to truly capture an emotional song, and its way many of the best musicians strive to do it in 1, the first time.

Bonnie Raitt is one of the coolest women I have ever met. In 1976, I was managing Tom Hayden's campaign for U.S. Senate in Northern California. One of the really fun parts of my job was coordinating the entertainment for fund raising concerts around the State. One night in San Jose, with Hayden and his wife Jane Fonda sitting in the front row, I I was in the wings onstage watching Jackson Browne and Linda Ronstadt perform a romantic duet. Bonnie Raitt had already sung her numbers, and she had brought down the house. Suddenly, from behind, I felt a cold glass on my neck -- it was Bonnie offering me a Scotch on the rocks, and she said, "Look around, you put this whole thing together. I salute you!" We toasted glasses, and then she gave me one of the sweetest kisses I have ever experienced in my life. It was like a dream, and luckily for me, it lasted longer than the normal "showbiz" kind of kiss. Talk about conflicted -- there I was in a business capacity trying to act professional, and there she was gifting me with this totally unexpected bit of sensuality. Every time I hear her voice, even now 43 years later, her beauty and sexiness once again sweep me off my feet. I was 29 then, I am 71 now -- the feelings are the same.
@@superloose5632 -- Thanks, man! The best surprises are the ones totally unexpected. I can still feel the thrill of that night! Best wishes .... Peter Anderson
It is love in its purest state, something so personal, so deep and transcendent that it is unconfessable and absolutely unshareable. It can only be lived, felt, without there being words or actions to communicate it.
I’ve heard this heart-wrenching song many times, but no one reaches inside and pulls every emotional string the way Bonnie Raitt does. With the amazing Hornsby on piano and Raitt’s bluesy voice, this performance captures the aching hopelessness of unrequited love with an almost unbearable power.
I used to listen to a BBC Radio 2 show on my drive into work in the late 1990s early 2000s, that was Wake Up To Wogan. His playlists and dry humour set me up for the day and often introduced me to artists I knew little if anything about. Two of them became lasting favourites, the late wonderful Eva Cassidy and of course this superb songstress Bonnie Raitt. Both of them are unique but share one significant quality, apart from the obvious flawless vocal talents, which is the ability to bring total sincerity to their singing. They both are able to reach into your soul and like the lyrics of that wonderful Roberta Flack rendering, capable of “killing me softly.” Two of my favourites from Bonnie are this one, I Can’t Make You Love Me and the wonderful Randy Newman composition from Faust, Feels Like Home, which is a real tear jerker.
Aren't we so lucky we live in a time that we get to replay such a beautiful live performance to our heart's content? Such a beautiful song, a beautiful performance.
Probably my favourite song ever. Unrequited love has to be one of the most difficult things we humans have to cope with. It doesn’t get much better than these two.
@@RubyBandUSA - Reid is/was a very successful songwriter, and was probably on his way to a NFL Hall of Fame career but he retired after 5 years- NFL money wasn't nearly as substantial in the early 70s- he may have kept on playing had it been the 80s or 90s. And this song is great, even after 30 years.
This is such a special song for my wife and I. When we first started dating it became our anthem. We both were very shy having been bitten more then once. When we realized how much alike we felt we literally fell into this song together. 30 yrs later the rest is history but I lost her on May 16th 2016. This song is so powerful and moving because it is the universal cry of the soul that wants to give and receive love as a basic need, even when it is sometimes blocked or misplaced. Bonnie Raitt, in this masterfully done song, gives perfect voice to this archetypal longing and need, and it's denial.

Unless you have had your heart torn out of your chest you won't get this song.
yea one small requirement in order to really get this one...😄
Yup... Unfortunately

This is THE most beautiful song ever written, and this version is THE best. Wow! Goose bumps...
Absolute perfection. Thank you Bonnie and this incredible band!
The emotion in her voice, the words and the music just make me cry. Perfection.
yes. yes..
Thank you for posting. I feel the same.

April 2022 and I still listen to this. One of the most beautiful songs and one of the best female singers.
For the man I love with all my heart...the man that was never mine to love... 💔 Forever... 💧💧💧💧💧💧💧💧💧💧💧💧💧💧💧💧💧💧💧💧💧
Wow, what tone and vibrato Bonnie has. What a super beautiful song. Love her…
I just saw Bonnie live - she sounds just as great as she always did - 73 and going strong!
One of the finest songs ever written. Simply beautiful.

song was written by Mike Reid, ex-NFL player.
@@RubyBandUSA Thank you. I never knew that.
Facts.
IF SOMEONE is unhappy you have to let them go.
Unrequited love is the most painful thing to experience in life.

Agree.
song was written by Mike Reid, ex-NFL player.
Rest in peace Barbara,my 💘 love we'll meet again someday.

So sorry for your loss , my daring husband died after 32 years of marriage 7years ago still miss him ,thank goodness for my dogs they are my reason to get up .
So sorry for your loss ...heartbroken for you.
Finklestein276 sorry for your loss.
Bonnie Raitt has a haunting voice that goes right to your soul….beautiful!!
Not many artists sound better than the original studio recording. Bonnie is in a class of her own.
The absolute best love song of all time. Most people who have loved have had their hearts broken.
I saw her at the Fox Theater in Atlanta in 2018 and I swear she was amazing. She started singing this song and half the crowd was crying, we all been here, or most of us have, touched us all. What a lady!
Bonnie's voice and Bruce's piano, the endless journey in search of love.
Beautifully sung by the incredible Bonnie, and pianist Bruce Hornsby- it doesn’t get any better than this. 👏🏻💓
Its amazing that this was captured because, the MUSE was in the house. And when that happens its very powerful and life changing. I am a musician and have witnessed it.
This song can me cry 30 years later. The heartbreak I felt then I can still remember.
Fabulous song & singer!
Me too
Me too.
My husband of over 50 years died two years ago. Today I heard an NPR interview with Bonnie Raitt and this song was brought up, I had to hear it… I finally can shut the door on knowing/ believing, at last, that my husband hadn’t loved me for a long long time and I could not make that happen. I am at peace. Thank you, Bonnie.
your story broke my heart...God bless...
I had to read this three times. Each time my heart broke a little bit more for you. I hope you have found happiness and know you deserve love❤
Oh God, give you peace xxxx
I can't say anything better than the last handful of superb comments. The song touches me deeply.
If you are not touched by this song you are not human.
One of the most powerful song I have ever heard! Lord have mercy!
This is simply magic…….. love from Denmark❤❤❤
Her voice, liquid gold.
She sings an uncomfortable truth, and does it beautifully.
With Bruce Hornsby on keyboard and the slower tempo of this version, this song really comes across and hits you. Great voice, great orchestration. It can't get any better than this,
This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it - for those who have dreamt of that "someone" in our lives who we never got to love the way we thought we would - and for these artists who bring those dreams closer to reality - I thank you, Bonnie Raitt and Bruce Hornsby - your God-given talent is hauntingly beautiful!
One of my favorite favorite songs. Bruce Hornsby piano is haunting. Bonnie is sweeter than ever in her pain. I've been there.
Beautiful, timeless, still tugs at my heart strings, I'm blessed my Husband and I fell in love to this song..years later, we can still sing and slow dance to it together ❤️
I allways find back to this song, Bonnie Raitt’s incredible voice and Bruce Hornsby on the piano….. magic
This song makes me weep. And this is the best version of it I ever heard.
It's really the 'only' version...

I saw Bonnie and Bruce perform this live, this version. Tears up my heart every time.

putting bruce on the keyboards moves this song onto another plane
This song is tear jerker!! Timeless. Sing it Bonnie!!!
Bruce Hornsby played on the original recording.
That is so true and key to the emotion of the song. I never knew it was Hornsby until recently, and when I did find out, it was unmistakably him.
Bruce = elegance Bonnie = a perfect moment
@@hemi969 Some people still think Hornsby co-wrote the song. Everyone forgets MIKE REID co-wrote this song, the former NFL All Pro defensive lineman for the Bengals...
One of the great vocal performances in modern pop music.
Beautiful! I've loved this song for 32 years now, I was dating my husband back then. Still married. Pure talent at its best. I dont know what happened to music these days, the feeling is just not there . Sad . I'll just keep playing the oldies and there is plenty of them on You Tube.
what a song, what a voice. So beautiful. Love it. Bonnie and Bruce are both fandamntastik. :) 🌹🌹
This song is so powerful and moving because it is the universal cry of the soul that wants to give and receive love as a basic need, even when it is sometimes blocked or misplaced. Bonnie Raitt, in this masterfully done song, gives perfect voice to this archetypal longing and need, and it's denial.
If you're not a writer Lynn, you should be.
