this video look at 1997 opel astra and how to put on a haed
A head gasket is a gasket that sits between the engine block and cylinder head(s) in an internal combustion engine.
Its purpose is to seal the cylinders to ensure maximum compression and avoid leakage of coolant or engine oil into the cylinders; as such, it is the most critical sealing application in any engine, and, as part of the combustion chamber, it shares the same strength requirements as other combustion chamber components
MLS or Multiple Layers Steel -- Most modern head engines are produced with MLS gaskets. These typically consist of three layers of steel. The contact faces are usually coated with a rubber-like coating such as Viton that adheres to the cylinder block and cylinder head while the thicker center layer is left bare.
Solid copper -- a solid sheet of copper, and typically requires special machining called 'o-ringing' that places a piece of wire around the circumference of the cylinder to bite into the copper. When this is performed copper gaskets are extremely durable. Recently companies have started producing copper gaskets with integral sealing wires permitting their retrofit into engines without the removal of the engine block for machine work.
Composite -- an older technology. Typically these are made from asbestos or graphite but are more prone to blowouts than newer gaskets. Asbestos gaskets are becoming increasingly rare due to health concerns.[2]
Elastomeric -- a gasket type used by Rover on their K Series engines. It utilised a steel core plate with molded in place silicone rubber beads to seal oil and coolant passages. The bores were sealed by rolled steel fire rings in a more conventional manner. The idea behind the gasket design was to produce a production version of the technology used in F1 engines at the time. The original application of the gasket on the smaller versions of the K Series was very successful. However, an engine redesign resulted in persistent problems with the design -- the joint interface became unstable and the gasket could not cope.
The cost of a replacement gasket is usually not extreme, but the price of total repair is significantly high. This is because removing/replacing an engine head is very time consuming - around 75% of cost will be labor. Furthermore, untreated blown gaskets usually seriously damage the engine, then requiring even more expensive work.

i have a 29 year old astra f and i love how explain everything for dummies as I have never done this myself but I am very keen on cleaning the engine and check for any issues it might have accumulated throughout the 15 years I have owned it. It does not show any problems but maintenance is needed to keep it that way because I haven't driven it for 8 years now.

Very helpful set of videos. Headgasket went at 280k km. Had a major leak between cyl no. 3 and 4 and cooling system behaved funny as well... happy to have it sorted out.

the rocker cover is not supposed to be metal on metal. Sealant is required.
But as you said it, the film has to be very thin so you won;t be affecting the headgasket tightening torque.
Thanks for the videos, have a similar engine, maybe i will take it apart one day. :)

First of all great video. Learned a lot just watching you. Second: please correct me if i'm wrong but the valve lifters needs to be depressurized and clean before refitting, otherwise the noise that you hear ( the ticking ) is exactly from that.

hi mate what you need to do is make sure everything is absolutely clean when you hear the ticking noise it is either the valves on a properly adjusted or you're not getting enough oil on top of the engine

+boggit and leggit garage - mate! thanks for posting this man. watched the vids twice over now....haynes manual is ready for abuse, as is my wife's astra....the job will commence in minutes few! I'm trying not to laugh in a 'demonic' fashion....the laughter is more alike to a man sentenced to die; which I will, if I cock it up! if bad turns to worse, I could 'bodge' the job and wrap the engine in 'black nasty' (masking tape - army issue)...and try and get the last ferry to the safety of tyneside.
my gsx-r 750 was easy to do ...car engine can't be that 'difficult', lol
if in the next few days you read or hear of a long-haired englishman found hung, drawn & quartered in north gemany, remember you read it here first. ;)
subscribed btw - learned alot from you videos, mucker!

quick tea & tab break ;)
love your dogs mate. pitbulls are wonderful....but staffies are awesome. Sadly, due to the political bollocks here in germany, you don't see either of the breeds anymore. politicians haven't got a scoobie when it comes to dogs (or owt else, come to think of it)...a shambolic state of affairs. :/
wifes car is 'getting there' though mate. she'll be back in hours few, bless her. she probably thinks I'm killing things on 'Black ops 3'. ...wrong....I'm here tapping shite :))
      skinned knuckles+shovel hands=anglo-saxon expletives.
how ironic - you're teaching me to fix the car...I'm teaching the locals how to swear properly, heh heh

i can confirm that originally it had a sealant for the cam housing
However i have done metal to metal on couple of these engines and never had a problem maybe i have been lucky maybe if the prep is right you may get away with it

Stretch bolts are one use only. There’s supposed to be gasket sealer between cam and head

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes they are but they can also be measured and if they are still within specification they are OK and if you don't have stretch faults not every single car does you can re use them

My gosh, what a butcher. I overhauled one of those dreadful engines this week past. How the hell can you strip it only in part? While it is in pieces, you might as well replace the camshaft oil seal, and the o ring at the distributor end. And CLEAN everything with a good solvent! Sandpaper? NO NO NO! All that grit is going to fall into the cylinders and down the oil galleries... Replace the head bolts on every engine that specifies degrees for the final torque, they are what we call stretch bolts, they will never pull the proper torque a second time, and could well snap. A little silicone sealant is called for on the mating surfaces too, just a little mind. I wouldn't put my name on that engine fix...
