    Hello, I like your videos, I have spent a long time as a mechanic myself, on heavy goods vehicles. When i did my apprenticeship i was always taught to get some engine oil, and lightly oil the threads of the cylinder head bolts, and oil both sides of the washer. This saves the metal to metal jumping that you are experiencing here. This has always worked for me, and I have torqued down many head bolts using this method, on average 28 head bolts per truck, tightened in excess of 300nm each. The one and only time that I forgot to do this, I was sorting an Audi a3 2.0 fsi engine for a bloke I know after the timing belt had snapped. The owner turned up as I was just about to torque the head down. Anyhow, he was pestering me, and I forgot to oil the bolts. This is the only time I have experienced the jumping that you had on this job. Hope this helps.

    Great series mate. I imagine some people would have said nothing and just gave it back to the customer and blamed them for anything going wrong in the future.. kudos for your honesty mate. You have to cover your back in this world. Too many people trying to rip each other off.

    Fair play Leon for putting up an honest video. Most you tubers wouldn't show this video because they think it's bad for there rep and only want to show a customer's car going back and as manufacturer intended. But this shows what can and does happen and how money influences decisions in the real world. Luckily for the customer the bolts seem to hold fine but could have gotten really expensive for them. That actually would have made an interesting end for the viewer... But not the customer. Keep up the good work!

    Straight up warts 'n all vid showing the real world situation mechanics are faced with. A number of unknowns with no clear cut 100% guaranteed solution. You've done your best as a pro and that's what counts. I work in recording studios servicing and installing high end music mixing consoles and studio gear. I get the same situations regularly. Either no previous real maintenance work done for 20 - 30 years (it's been working fine for years so why is the bill so much??!) or dodgy (often bodges) unknowns that are difficult to find let alone repair/analyse cheaply. Always on time constraints and a tight customer budget. I feel for you since I have many a night been stuck desperately trying to finish a shitty job on time for a recording session that "has to work for ever or else" the next morning. Cover your arse with the customer or else face the music! Thanks for another great video Leon and all the best to ya.

    I wouldn't of thought that head would be to much of an issue for now as you say the head is dead flat now and skimmed so shouldn't really be an issue, may be a few years down the line probably, There is a mechanic / bible basher on here from the States who skims warped heads with sand paper, long sheet of straight glass with sandpaper glued to it, he then runs the head over it until its dead straight uses the ruler and feeler gauges to test it, it's an amazing finish he does and appears to be a good job but how reliable it will be is anyone's guess

  • @howiesiesoosoo
    @howiesiesoosoo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The thermostat housing assembly on these engines is mostly plastic and frequently cracks causing coolant loss, subsequent overheating and head gasket failure - usually resulting in a warped head. These rubbish plastic housings can now be replaced with metal ones that are infinitely more reliable and not as costly as you might think. Whatever the cost it's gotta be less than a head gasket and cylinder head reface job!

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard Mounfield hi mate great question now this is a minefield technically yes once you change the thickness of the head you will change the compression but it is not enough to affect anything you need a good machine shop to tell you if there is going to be an issue with the thickness of the head but in my experience you can always get away with a couple of skimmed if it's just a little amount but get your machine shop to tell you
