    this video look at 1997 opel astra and how to remove the haed
    A head gasket is a gasket that sits between the engine block and cylinder head(s) in an internal combustion engine.
    Its purpose is to seal the cylinders to ensure maximum compression and avoid leakage of coolant or engine oil into the cylinders; as such, it is the most critical sealing application in any engine, and, as part of the combustion chamber, it shares the same strength requirements as other combustion chamber components
    MLS or Multiple Layers Steel -- Most modern head engines are produced with MLS gaskets. These typically consist of three layers of steel. The contact faces are usually coated with a rubber-like coating such as Viton that adheres to the cylinder block and cylinder head while the thicker center layer is left bare.
    Solid copper -- a solid sheet of copper, and typically requires special machining called 'o-ringing' that places a piece of wire around the circumference of the cylinder to bite into the copper. When this is performed copper gaskets are extremely durable. Recently companies have started producing copper gaskets with integral sealing wires permitting their retrofit into engines without the removal of the engine block for machine work.
    Composite -- an older technology. Typically these are made from asbestos or graphite but are more prone to blowouts than newer gaskets. Asbestos gaskets are becoming increasingly rare due to health concerns.[2]
    Elastomeric -- a gasket type used by Rover on their K Series engines. It utilised a steel core plate with molded in place silicone rubber beads to seal oil and coolant passages. The bores were sealed by rolled steel fire rings in a more conventional manner. The idea behind the gasket design was to produce a production version of the technology used in F1 engines at the time. The original application of the gasket on the smaller versions of the K Series was very successful. However, an engine redesign resulted in persistent problems with the design -- the joint interface became unstable and the gasket could not cope.
    The cost of a replacement gasket is usually not extreme, but the price of total repair is significantly high. This is because removing/replacing an engine head is very time consuming - around 75% of cost will be labor. Furthermore, untreated blown gaskets usually seriously damage the engine, then requiring even more expensive work.

    150 euros for just a skim, wow!! I got a Kia 4 banger head hot tanked, skimmed, and valve job for $200 which is $168 euros! And now I am extra appreciative of all the machine shops I have access to in the San Fernando Valley here in California. Great video, thanks!

      50sKid yes it's very expensive here €150 for head skimming and pressure test everything else is extra

    It's a highly informative video affording viewers an opportunity to learn with ease and comfort. Your style of teaching is just superb. could you educate us about how an Opal Astra's TPS works. I had recently had my piston rings and valves replaced but it trembles and dies when I step on the gas

    That's a great tip on the bolt holes. I always blow out the bolt holes anyway, simply because I want everything as clean as absolutely possible before reassembly, but I guess that is possible to crack the head with pressure on trapped oil or water.

    I don't see any problem with some light 180 grit sandpaper action there on a cast iron block. Especially if it's a graphite head gasket. I use a green 3M roloc plastic bristle disc (120 grit) to clean those up. If it was an MLS gasket on an aluminum engine block, different story!

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      50sKid yes mate it all depends on what the parts are made out of all so have to be careful with heavy sandpaper you don't chuck metal particles into the engine

    A guy I bought a 280 special capri shell off has dozens of rare cars in insulated sheds, his name was boddington I think but he's passed on now, any way his mate had/has an avo in snow white AND it's never been run hard in fact it's in showroom condition apart from some dust, and it bides in a place called scotsburn near invergordon highlands of Scotland, I fell in love with it soon as I saw it, had a couple of 2 doors mk1s and couple 4 doors same with mk11s and I find that the 4 doors were better balanced than 2 doors, don't ask me why but when you are shifting along at 95 to 110 on highland roads and wearing all four tyres at the same time by drifting, wow, but I always preferred the little extra weight of the 4 doors, lol I'm probably the only one but I never pranged a 4 door but I oranges a couple of 2 doors.

      sorry, if I mind correctly it was diamond white, and I thought that was the only colour they came out of the factory? so did your friend or you paint it green??

    I'm about to put the head back on my 8v Astra. Original gasket was in good condition. So I polished up the head and block with 600 grit paint prep paper wrapped around a flat, machined square, ally billet. O chose paint prep paper because I knew it wouldn't shed any grit.
    Car was cheap to buy with valve stem seals as a known issue, but failed after 2 approx months, big smoke and misfire. Driven 15 miles home before being parked up.
    Took head off and found No1 ex valve chipped. Head off and very lucky to see zero damage! Guides were good, and new valve lapped in ok, new stem seals installed. Luckily, I was interrupted before I started torquing down the new head bolts.
    Why lucky? Because I'd put red Hermetite around the gasket before dropping the head back on. (amateur with a bad memory, because I did one 6 years before) I've now been told it could be a disaster waiting to happen. :¬( So I just received another gasket in the post. Aargh, gotta re-clean it all up tomorrow.

    Nice videos, are it a common issue with the head gasket going bad but the hoses does not become hard? My old astra starts to behave oddly with air in the coolant system
    been bleeding air like an idiot and it works for a few days then it sounds like a waterfall in my heatermatrix think my head gasket might be screwed i have the same engine x16szr

    When you sand, what if metal residue gets between cyliner and wall. Then you've got a big problem. You should put tissue in each hole.

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate if they don't have any problems with any of the bolts the head should be off within the day then send it down to a engineer in crowd if it need skimming that's normal around 2 days and then another day to put it back on we normally have them turn around within the week but there is some cars we had problems with and have taken a bit longer hope that helps thanks

    Why do you use a cheap bendy ruler to test the head for warps? Better off using an engineering straight edge tool. Sealey make them for €60

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage
      @bodgitandleggitgarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      afarrell10 I just like to show people even with simple equipment they can test it I have an engineering level but it's like €500 no point me showing that on a video as people will not have it you can still get away with using this type of roller just to see if your head is badly warped
