I made a mistake in the video I said you should be able to twist a timing belt or 180° This is not true You're only supposed to twist it 90 degrees you can see in the video I say 180° but I only twist it and 90 degrees
Thank you so much for this! Bought my Corsa X14SZ 2 years ago. Without any technical car knowledge. I kept reading for months. Started with car basics, find out how a fuel engine works. This vid helped me so much... Changed 4 months ago the timing belt, tensioner, waterpump, thermostat, alternator belt. All parts were Gates. And replaced all other parts; oil, coolant, filters, sparkplugs etc. Today I checked the belt tension and it's still fine after 3000km/2000miles. The engine has driven 230.000km/150.000 miles and still no oil usage. Still going strong!
There is much easier way to get timing belt on. Take out tensioner. Put timing belt on correctly according to marks. Then on the tensioner push the two moving parts so that the holes line up. Put alen key through holes. Now simply install the tensioner. It will go in easily. After inslalling it pull out allen key, and it will tension the belt.
Damn I miss working on engines like this. The timing belt changes I get given at work these days sometimes make me feel like jacking the whole trade in. I really miss those days. I used to love doing head gaskets but on some modern machinery I'd rather go home lol!!

I once had a guy turn up at the door with one of these with the belt broken how he got it up the hill I'll never know he was all for scrapping the car as it was a bit of a shed and thought the engine was ruined. I offered to put a new belt on and show him it would be OK knowing it is a non interference engine as I had a belt there at the time he said OK and said he would come back next day I made him wait and 20 minutes later he was driving away happy as Larry minus 30 quid. Those were the days. Nowadays a belt is a nightmare on most motors I'm glad I changed careers.
A very detailed, elaborate video nobody has posted so far. I have learned a lot. hope, you will also post a video in parts showing how to reassemble Daewoo Lanos engine. God bless u and more grease to your elbow.
Great video thanks and the explanation was perfect for me. I needed this video due to this specific timing belt tensioner as all the others I watched had the later type tensioner. Now I can finish the job with confidence.
Great video, really helpful but could you answer three questions for me please? 1) Does the belt turn clockwise as you look at it (if the new belt has the arrows you mention I want to be sure which way it fits)? 2) Can the bottom pulley bolt be reused? Some says its a stretch bolt and must be replaced but I would have thought a new one would come with the kit if that were the case. 3) When you said to turn the engine over twice to listen for rattles, etc, how do you turn it? Is that just by turning one of the pulley bolts with a spanner? Thanks.
Graham Hayman hi mate yes as you are looking at the timing belt turn it clockwise on some of the newer cars you can't reuse the boat you have to check the service information to be sure as you can see in all my time in videos I turn the bottom crank by hand with a ratchet to make sure there's no binding to make sure it turns fully this will ensure you've got the time incorrectly before you start it
Great video. Looking to get the job done tomorrow on the driveway. Your new tensioner, arent they usually loaded with a pin? So when you install it, you just pull the pin and the tension is set.

Hi there. My timing belt was changed a year ago. And since that time I had erratic idling on my opel meriva. Was there an error when the timing chain was replaced?
HI, good video. Did you tighten the pulley using air gun / bolt gun? I've heard theres high chance of breaking the little notch that keeps the pulley in certain position to break if you use air gun to tighten it all the way.
Well, I marked position of old water pump and mounted new. Then I mounted tensioner and then belt. Then I set tensioner in middle position and tighten up 13mm bolt. And all is fine.
Hi lad I’m after some help iv got a Vauxhall Astra h 1.7 09 I’m having real trouble setting up the time after new head gasket wounding if u can help ??? 🥺🥺🥺🥺
hi mate yeah pretty much the same if it's a 16 valve you will have to CAMS rather than one at the top all I can say to is tippex will be your best friend mark everything up with the original timing marks also market with tippex if you go wrong you can clearly see from the tip X marks always turn it over by hand before you start and just take your time you should have no problem thanks for watching
By the way, you said the only solution to take off the bottom pulley bolt is with a powerful airgun. When you look at the place of the flywheel there is a small gap at circa 4o clock. You can stick a flat screwdriver in it, thats how i've blocked my crankshaft! After you've put something in there you can easily take off the bottom pully bolt, because the engine is locked. Guys, don't forget to remove the screwdriver when you fire up your enging ;-)
+Supremizer I got a book that suggests to set the transmission in 5th gear and then press the brake while removing the screw. Worked good for me, I used a clamp for woodworking to fix the brake but if you have a buddy you can tell him to push the brake.
Doing the same job right now on my Corsa B. Was stuck at the water pump when it started raining so Im viewing your video again. How did you break it lose? Just with the big hammer and breaker bar? Tried the hammer already and it didnt budge one bit. Im wondering if heating it up with a torch might help.
Hi mate if you use a little lever bar there is a little knob on one side of the water pump you can get it in there or even a screwdriver and slightly either against it this will break it loose
nice vids. My car is pretty similar, just electronic firing model 1999. When you take off the first pulley how do you lock the engine without that proper tool? or maybe you have that tool. I don't have air tools either. just trying to save some money.
Tar rain hi mate if you can manage to lock the flywheel you will be able to use a breaker bar to take off the bottom Bolt but be very careful with this as you can damage your flywheel very easy
bodgit and leggit garage . Thanks for your reply. I've bloody ordered the locking tool now. I honestly thought it would be more like a screw driver. but it was in fact of a shape I could not easily substitute. don't have air tools. no tricks up my sleeve. just trying to get this good old car back running. as a blown head gasket would usually retire a car of this age. but yes your videos doing the head on this car have been the most helpful out of all my info sources, including the manual, cheers.
Jaco S Cape Town South Afirica THANKS FOR GREAT VIDEO .I have a 2001 Opel Corsa Lite 1.4 Sport The buttom gear has ply on it is the something i can do or must i replace the shaft
There is an automatic tensioner and you take the pressure off and that's how the fan belt comes off this is a full video series and I have showed it on one of the videos
Hi sorry to bother but I have been told to use sealant when do the gaskets what do you think mate I intend to use torque wrench. Thanks mate would appreciate your opinion.
john agnewq hi mate what gasket are you talking about if you are talking about the head gasket then definitely not head gasket's have their own special sealer and ceiling on them you just need to put them down and took them to spec
Hi mate yes in my opinion it is very important to put a full timing belt fitting a new water pump that's belt tensioners pulleys idler the lot it's the only way to do it
I have a question any suggestions how to tight the camshaft pulley and not to turn all the camshaft ? Because one friend of mine try to change the timing belt he did it but he try to tight the pulley because he change the thermostat and the pulley moved forward clockwise now the Engine is startying but as you rev the engine you can hear a valves noise .. Any suggestions here ?
Hi mate as long as you change your water pump for a proper brand new one not a cheap shity one every time you do your timing belt you will really not have to worry about it 99% of the Times it will be ok until you change your timing belt again and for some reason if your water pump goes first then yes I will always change the belt and tensioner you might as well you are there anyway better to be safe than sorry
hey man ive set it all up and every half a turn or so im getting pressure and difficult to turn is this just compression or am i on the wrong stroke on the cam in reference to the crank
sezza millar hi mate yes that is perfectly normal you need to turn it at least two revolutions and make sure it does not lock if it doesn't lock you will be ok you will not do any damage you can still be off a little bit but you will not do any damage once you have turned it a few times start it to hear how it sounds if it locks up and you cannot turn anymore you have to take the belt off and realign your marks
sezza millar hi mate it could have got damaged it could be slightly warped and some of them have a special inlay in them best to take it off and have a check if you're unsure always buy another one as this can cause a lot of damage to your bottom end of your engine
well diesel is a good cleaner but it leaves a residue behind it I'd say they made me do it because they have to do things quick but we can spend a bit more time in cleaning it
Hey, thanks for the great video. I have a problem on my corsa b 1.4 x14sz engine, after changing the water pump, thermostat, filters oil and coolant sensor the engine temperature is up to 100 degree C. I drained the system twice and took patience making sure the heating matrix was also free of air, but the temperature still up into the clouds, the funny thing is that the coolant is not boiling, and the radiator fan works fine. I also look for signs of head gasket damage such as oil contamination on cooling or signs of the car drinking oil or water but nothing wrong showed up. My conclusions and questions to you. 1. Electric, doggy sensor again showing the wrong temperature, already replaced the coolant sensor and tested back with the old faulty one showing the same behavior. 2. Could be the beginning of a head gasket failure! 3. Radiator blocked some how, try already pumping water without flow constrains. 4. Wrong orientation on the water pump (this one is difficult to check as on the water pump location there is a marking and also in your video i can see the orientation is the right one.(maybe there is another way to mount the pump creating more flow)? Help me out!
hi mate have you bled the system when you put fresh water and coolant you have to bleed the system to make sure it's not a lot if the system is a locked the car will overheat all you need to do is turn the heater on full heat inside and the fan on full make sure you have enough water and coolant in the bottle take off the bottle cap and wait to the fan to kick in when you've taken off the cap all the air can be released but on some cars you have to twist a little valve near the thermostat so just check which one you have hope this helps thanks
Hi there, sorted by replacing the temperature sensor, apparently a normal aftermarket has a negative effect on the ECU readings, last night went to a auto parts shop here in Denmark and bought the same original sensor that cost me only 3 pounds compare to 15 of the aftermarket, after installing the issue dissipated and tested also the coolant reservoir with a chicken or turkey needle sensor giving out between 87 and 95 degree during driving and idle. By the way for all of you that wonder what orientation the water pump must have, this video show it a the point were our trusted mechanic is trying to break loose the water pump. Thanks again for the amazing video!!
just drive the car with AC On in moderate position and the radiator and fan will start and it will eventually make the engine cold. Try it and tell me if it is working or not. In India We do like that
Hello sir please I have problem with my opel classic 2005 model it’s getting overheating when you start the engine 30 minutes then water starting boiling
Greetings from Venezuela, excellent job, I have a question is that an interference engine?? i had read some pages that says yes, other says no, but i have this doubt...
It's common for the water pump to fail on these and similar Vauxhall/Opel engines (one of the reasons why they should be done with the timing belt), and obviously why the head gasket goes.
mrman17 Yeap. Water pump's only about £19 and as you have to strip off all the timing belt, pulleys and cover to get at it anyway, this is the time to replace it.
My Opel Corsa Bakkie 1.4 Utility side pocket takes time to pull on gear one and two. It picks up speed faster after 30seconds. They say it might be riming or canker. Is it correct? Which one is it?
Hi I'm not 100% sure what you are saying but the problem is it could be 101 things that's wrong with your car it could be timing issue it could be an injector problem it could be be a spark plug problem it could be a compression problem there's lots of problems it can be and will be impossible without diagnosing it properly
@@bodgitandleggitgarage They tell me is timing or cranker pulley. When I put gear one, and I fully accelerate it takes time to pull off or respond. Same thing when on gear two. Will be glad for the reply. Thnaks.
@@oupamangena19 if they're telling you It's Time in then just check your timing marks if your timing marks line up it's not your time in if they don't then you have an issue with your timing

Hey... Can i use your video for change timing belt on my astra 1.6 8v z16se or is there something different? i also want to change the simmering, have you an explanation therefore?
Christoph Benninghaus hi mate basically the same just take your time use tippex to Mark everything you really can't go wrong take pictures if you're unsure but most importantly just take your time Mark everything you will not go wrong
Just did the replacement of the water pump on my 1995 Corsa-B 1.2v, but unfortunately I went cheap and decided not to change the timing belt at the same time. I positioned both pulleys at the top and bottom and re-installed all components. The Opel started right away and the RPMs were just under 1000xRPM. I went to the Mechanic to get an alignment scheduled when on my way home and the old timing belt snapped. Now, I just have installed the new timing belt and tensioner, positioned both pulleys again on the timing marks. Now when I turn the engine over it will start but will die after a few seconds. I need help on guiding me to the next step, I am not sure if their is additional timing settings.
hi mate new oil is best but very expensive because you're only using it for a few minutes or hours so if you got any old oil lying around that has not been to terminated with anything else I would use that and then put the fresh oil in
Hi bodgit can you help astravan 1.3cdti non start but cranks done all the usual checks brother in law put his reader on it was showing fuel rail sensor my concern is if I replace this could it still be the hp pump thanks for any advice
Hi mate as I hope you understand it's very difficult for me to diagnose a problem like without testing it probably you could literally have 1001 problems with this if I tell you something and it's wrong you can spend a fortune you will need to get this diagnosed properly I hope you understand I cannot really help in this situation
I made a mistake in the video I said you should be able to twist a timing belt or 180°
This is not true You're only supposed to twist it 90 degrees you can see in the video I say 180° but I only twist it and 90 degrees

Well, I marked position of old water pump and mounted new. Then I mounted tensioner and then belt. Then I set tensioner in middle position and tighten up 13mm bolt. And all is fine.
Hi there, i Got an Astra f & i want to replace my V belt tensioner, do you have a video on how to progress with this..?
Miss my mk3 astra, Great cars and regret selling mine
superb fantastic i have been strugling with mine but since you i watched your presentation all went good
thanks mate thanks for watching much appreciated
What's the cause for carbon to be on the spark plugs
Good job thats how i normally do it but when i see the crank seal is gone like that one seeing i stripped everything off ill change it
Hey do you know where I can find the engine code? I know it is the X16SZR but I mean the number code? The car is Astra G.
the labour on this hole job (head gasket ,pump n T belt) musta cost £££'s , can i ask what the final bill was for a job like this ?
Very helpful vid thanks 👍🏼
Great Video!! Thank you for that. I just want to find out does the same method apply for opel kadette 200is?
hi mate very similar
Can you explain to me why all the Pistons arrow is always looking gearbox not timing side🤔🤔❓
Hi lad I’m after some help iv got a Vauxhall Astra h 1.7 09 I’m having real trouble setting up the time after new head gasket wounding if u can help ??? 🥺🥺🥺🥺
Is it pretty much the same with a z18xe? Looks similar just the z18xe is twin cam. Any tips for changing timing belt on the z18xe? Great vid
hi mate yeah pretty much the same if it's a 16 valve you will have to CAMS rather than one at the top all I can say to is tippex will be your best friend mark everything up with the original timing marks also market with tippex if you go wrong you can clearly see from the tip X marks always turn it over by hand before you start and just take your time you should have no problem thanks for watching
It seems clear thanks for teaching us.
Question! Is it a mast to loosen the tensioner always when I replace timming belt
Yes. But you should change the timing tensioner too.
@@bodgitandleggitgarage Hm, didnt see any knob. Will check it out, thanks mate!
@@Skandalos anytime mate
@@bodgitandleggitgarage I had to literally chisel the pump out of the block LOL. Punishment for always using tap water to top up coolant.
@@Skandalos wow I'm glad you got it out nice job mate
Thanks for the great video. Where is the thermostat housing for this vehicle?
thanks mate the top rad pipe mate
I honestly thought it would be more like a screw driver. but it was in fact of a shape I could not easily substitute. don't have air tools. no tricks up my sleeve. just trying to get this good old car back running. as a blown head gasket would usually retire a car of this age. but yes your videos doing the head on this car have been the most helpful out of all my info sources, including the manual, cheers.
thanks m8 for great video. I have changed my timing belt in daewoo lanos 1.5 8v, it's very similar engine to this one.
+jan kowalski hi mate thank you and thanks for watching
Jaco S Cape Town South Afirica THANKS FOR GREAT VIDEO .I have a 2001 Opel Corsa Lite 1.4 Sport The buttom gear has ply on it is the something i can do or must i replace the shaft
lourette swanepoel hi mate I'm not sure which gear you mean if you can let me know exactly what is moving I will try and help you thank you
hi its the crank shaft gear
lourette swanepoel yes mate if it's wobbling just replace it with a new one second hand one can be just as bad and new genuine one
hi jaco. I have the same issue. the crank gear outside keyway keeps breaking. I've replaced gear many times do u experience the same?
How’d you get the tensioner off on the fan belt?
There is an automatic tensioner and you take the pressure off and that's how the fan belt comes off this is a full video series and I have showed it on one of the videos
bodgit and leggit garage ok thanks for the reply ill look into it 👍🏼
@@brandanfiederlein3390 anytime mate glad you like it
Hi sorry to bother but I have been told to use sealant when do the gaskets what do you think mate I intend to use torque wrench. Thanks mate would appreciate your opinion.
john agnewq hi mate what gasket are you talking about if you are talking about the head gasket then definitely not head gasket's have their own special sealer and ceiling on them you just need to put them down and took them to spec
Help me out a lot this video last week thanks mate.👍🏻
thanks mate glad it help you
when fitting a water pump with a seal should i also use some gasket sealer?
hi mate if you look at the timing belt video Peugeot partner part 1 I explain that's all in that video hope it helps you
Gareth Mcnally. I always smear some multi purpose grease on the rubber seals
one question before I try this out, is it important to replace tensioner pulley with each timing belt replacement?
Hi mate yes in my opinion it is very important to put a full timing belt fitting a new water pump that's belt tensioners pulleys idler the lot it's the only way to do it
sounds I need to expense extra money :) . Thanks a lot
Hmmm. Adjust the wheels to the timing marks.
Do i have to change the timingbelt or can i just take it of on the top and change the topgasket and then just put the timing belt back on on top?
hi mate you don't have to replace it but you have it off so you might as well replace it so you don't have any trouble in the future
Hi, is it required to change the belt and tensioner when you do a water pump job?
Hi mate as long as you change your water pump for a proper brand new one not a cheap shity one every time you do your timing belt you will really not have to worry about it 99% of the Times it will be ok until you change your timing belt again and for some reason if your water pump goes first then yes I will always change the belt and tensioner you might as well you are there anyway better to be safe than sorry
@@bodgitandleggitgarage OK.
That's good I really like it because it help a lot.thanks for the info
Glad to hear that!
How's it bru thnx for the info so how do I set cam timing if I don't have the covers with the timing markings
Any chance you can show where all the vacuum lines go. I was just given one of these cars and I have a vacuum line I can't find where it belongs.
Mein Freund, schönes Video. Aber warum hast du den Simmerring der Kurbelwelle nicht erneuert? Man kann erkennen, dass dieser undicht ist.
Hallo Kumpel, danke, das Siegel war gut
Thanks for how to do rear axle bushes on Ford worked a treat made my own Bush fitter two bit of 10mil threaded rod ang couple bit of 40mil angle
What year is the astra your working on? I have a 1.6 and was wondering if It was the same process. Awesome video !
A 1.6 1996*
Josh Cunliffe hi mate is was a 1997
Okay will I be good to go if I follow you're video while doing it. My is also fuel injected. Thanks heaps!
hey man ive set it all up and every half a turn or so im getting pressure and difficult to turn is this just compression or am i on the wrong stroke on the cam in reference to the crank
sezza millar hi mate yes that is perfectly normal you need to turn it at least two revolutions and make sure it does not lock if it doesn't lock you will be ok you will not do any damage you can still be off a little bit but you will not do any damage once you have turned it a few times start it to hear how it sounds if it locks up and you cannot turn anymore you have to take the belt off and realign your marks
cheers mate ill get back to it then this is the first interference engine ive attemted so im being cautious.
all the best with it mate
i have harmonic balancer wobble only very slight on idle but wobbling all the same could i be missing something, they are a bloody loose fit as is
sezza millar hi mate it could have got damaged it could be slightly warped and some of them have a special inlay in them best to take it off and have a check if you're unsure always buy another one as this can cause a lot of damage to your bottom end of your engine
hi mate how do you get crankshaft sprocket bolt out locked wheel from turning and cant get to move does in maybe turn clockwise and not anticlockwise
hi mate the easiest way to do it is with a powerful airgun an impact air gun rattles as well as turns that the easiest way
+bodgitand leggit not got any air tools I had a punto and the bolt just screwed of easy maybe this astra turns clockwise to unscrew
Thanks for the great video. What is the right size of Torx? 2:30 .
hi mate its a E18

Hey mate... iv heard that the army uses diesel to flush the old oil, whats your take on this?
well diesel is a good cleaner but it leaves a residue behind it I'd say they made me do it because they have to do things quick but we can spend a bit more time in cleaning it
Hey, thanks for the great video.

Greetings from Venezuela, excellent job, I have a question is that an interference engine?? i had read some pages that says yes, other says no, but i have this doubt...
yes mate it is
ohh I wasnt sure, thanks so much for answer!

I would always but a pump in it for under £20 most cars
On my Zafira you're supposed to change timing belt at 60k miles and my water pump was starting to leak so had timing belt and water pump replaced
Hey guys... I just wana know wether the tensioner marker pin has to move if u rotate the engine?

What about the failed crank oil seal behind the crank cam pulley?
How fast was you going when the timing belt snaps
bodgitand leggit 30kmh
Kevin Walkup there's a very very strong possibility you have been some valves in your head you have to take the head off and check con rods too
bodgitand leggit That's what I was afraid to hear.
Kevin Walkup sorry mate
Proper coolant instead of rusty water may likely have slowed up thr corrosion due to the hexavalent chromium in the coolant.
💪👍
Brilliant Thanks especially how to set the water pump right
thanks mate
Good well explained video mate
thanks mate
Very useful tutorial mate, cheers
To clean the engine, does it have to be old oil, or can it be new?
hi mate new oil is best but very expensive because you're only using it for a few minutes or hours so if you got any old oil lying around that has not been to terminated with anything else I would use that and then put the fresh oil in
Hi bodgit can you help astravan 1.3cdti non start but cranks done all the usual checks brother in law put his reader on it was showing fuel rail sensor my concern is if I replace this could it still be the hp pump thanks for any advice
Hi mate as I hope you understand it's very difficult for me to diagnose a problem like without testing it probably you could literally have 1001 problems with this if I tell you something and it's wrong you can spend a fortune you will need to get this diagnosed properly I hope you understand I cannot really help in this situation
