    Learned more than a couple things watching you do that one. Video smacks of EXPERIENCE. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge sir. I love working on old outboards.

    Hey t Mike if you can make a video on the throttle of this motor on how it works and sits on the carburetor will be really helpful ❤

    G'day Mike...I've rebuilt several of these motors so thought I'd throw in my two bob's worth...Firstly, you forgot to mention that the lower shift rod has a blind spline which needs to be lined up with the upper shift rod, which also has a blind spline (both lower and upper rods are connected by a plastic cam in the middle_If you force the gearbox on without doing this first you will destroy the cam and that means a lot of extra work to replace the cam (if you can find one). I do this by putting the gearbox into reverse and pushing the shift handle into the reverse position before bringing them together......also, I'll bet that getting the gearbox back on with it on the stand was a gigantic pain in the arse!!!...It's much easier to stand the motor upside down on the ground and lower the gearbox directly downwards into the motor....another thing with the'82-86 motors which sets them apart from earlier models is the shaft diameter (earlier motors were a bees dick smaller and whilst they look the same, they use a different impeller)...use the wrong impeller and you're set to cook your motor

      I replaced my impeller on my 9.8 and I believe I did this step wrong.. my reverse doesn't work, Nuetral moves it forward and forward is about half the speed it used to be. Do you know how I correct this?

    • @bradleylehman4674
      @bradleylehman4674 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I miss aligned the gear shaft when I put it back together. How do you know when the lower is in reverse, Nuetral or forward? S

    • @forrestnicholson2172
      @forrestnicholson2172 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bradleylehman4674 It's easy to do! With the lower unit off you can turn the gear selector shaft of the lower unit with a pair of pliers (not on the splines!) If the propeller moves freely back and forth you have shifted the lower into neutral. Now make sure the gear selection lever on the motor/upper is in the same position, neutral. As you push the lower back onto the upper and align your shafts and water guide tube you may have to gently tug on the pull start rope to turn the gears in the upper into alignment so that it all will seat back together. Hope this helps!

    Great video!! But must ask. What's the threaded hole just behind the bottom of the housing. It's just behind the nut by the water pump inlet...

    My drive shaft had a plastic pice on it when I pulled the lower unit. When I look up diagrams it appears to be called the drive shaft block.. can some one explain where the piece is suppose to go. Not sure if that’s where it’s suppose to go as no videos I find have it on drive shaft when lower into is pulled

      Yes...the only difference is carby size and intake/reed block (from memory)..otherwise they're exactly the same.....
