Wow, just what I needed. I built this same puller after seeing your video and it worked great! I just can’t believe I didn’t think of doing that already after fighting my lower unit today. Thanks!
So, I ended up ordering a $20 inside jaw puller from Amazon. I got it hooked in, down in there and cranked on it. Still didn't pull.... At this point, with the puller still cranked on tight, I decided to take another shot at heating it up. In about as long as it took for yours to fall out in your video, I heard a loud PINCK,as the gear popped free, and I was able to crank it out the rest of the way with the puller. Just wanted to give you the update and thank you for the advice. I am now subscribed.

Thank you for making this video. I’m looking forward to seeing part two. This enjoyer has enjoyed learning along with you sir! I’m working on a 1984 7.5hp and it has the same lower unit. My bearings are on order as well. I had a lot of issues getting the gear box apart due to salt and aluminum corrosion, the hub came out of the prop and I had to remove the retainer nut in pieces. The hub had to be ground down on either side with a belt sander and then chiseled off with a flathead luckily I did no damage to prop shaft or housing threads. Man, I was so nervous about grinding into the splines of the prop shaft. I can’t wait to see more and learn more. CHEERS!
I enjoy the way you made your own puller. I’m a cobbler in I try to fix everything I can. Always wonder if something is screwed in or pressed in. I don’t want to break a housing on motor. Thanks.👍
Thanks for quick reply and looking forward to Part 2 video. I the meantime quick questions to get me going. Which way around does the cam follower go in. Pointed end on the cam or pointed end down the prop shaft to the dog clutch? And which way up does the cam go? Loved your home made puller, but all I did was put the prop on, slid a wedge between prop and the housing then turned the prop nut. Bearing carrier unit popped out. To get the forward gear out I just gently pushed it from behind with a screwdriver through the oil filler hole.
Would absolutely love details on how to reinstall this lower end unit to the rest of the motor. Took mine off to replace the impeller, and after 5 hours I can't get the three shafts to align to reinstall it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Make sure it is in forward gear on the handle and the gear box so you can rotate the prop to get the splines to align. Thanks for watching

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina Yeah part 2 would be great. I have a Merc 60 in which I am going to be doing the lower end rebuild. Thanks for posting these videos...
Early 1970s merc 7.5 leaking gear oil out of weep hole. Drained oil. Doesn't look too bad. Spent 300 on "mechanic" to get it to pee again. First attempt didn't pee enough. Took it back. Said he sealed something between upper and lower unit to get it to not have scalding water come out. Wondering if he put a seal back in wrong. What would happen if I seal that weep hole up with silicone to stop the oil leak and open it back up for the winter time? Trying to not have to do this pull apart whole thing. I'd assume parts are hard to come by as well.

Well, it looks like I can’t send a pic through these comments. So on my Merc 7.5, the wiring is toast so I am trying to replace. 2 of the wires go into the ignition and are soldered to a screw, that goes through a small white plastic box, and connects to the spring on each of the points. I’m trying to replace the 2 white boxes, but don’t know what they are called.
@@patrickgilbert9715 how did you position the shift rod on gear case and shift handle on motor to reinstall gear case? I know there is a flat spot on shift rod spline. Does it line up facing the drive shaft?

Are yu sure that the thread is reverse? Usually on the gear housing cover there is an arrow to show on and off on the older. models. I fixed a 1969 20 hp and a 73 20 hp Mercury and clockwise to tighten. My 1986 8 hp is reverse thread on the bearing carrier. That oil seal is in wrong.
Pretty informative but after you take that screwed-in retainer ring that is in front of the gear assembly (that’s what holds it in) there’s really no need for a puller, you can pretty much yank if out easily, I seen with your puller you barely tightened 1 nut and it was out (nice job on it tho). I actually had to make a tool to get out the retainer ring out,.. it was a bear removing it!
Im doing the same lower unit right now, just finished taking it apart, separated all the bearing from the gears , curious how you are going to approach the new bearing being pressed in... i dont have a press but i was thinking dry ice the gear, lube the bearing and use a bearing driver. Great diy puller - I used your idea with 3/16 3" carriage bolts I had in the shop - worked great on my 1970 7.5. How did you get the carrier bearing nut out?
Did you run into the dog clutch as they call it? I once had a 18 hp Johnson that in forward gear it would jump in and out of gear while running . Boat shop said it needed a dog clutch.. But it would cost more to fix than it’s worth.🤔

Good video but you did not show what I was wanting to see and that's how you got the cover nut off without a special tool to unscrew the spanner nut the carrier I can remove I made a tool for that on the 20 hp motors i bought an 80 dollar special cover nut remover because over half the time I would break the lock nut trying to turn it by using a hammer and large blade screwdriver to try and remove it and it was costing me 30 bucks every time for that cover nut, so now I can remove and reinstall them every time with no damage to the nut only problem is it only fits the 20 hp fine but not the smaller motors like 4.5 9.8 motors
