Just to add a tip that some might find useful. If you have the head off and want to check the engine for blockages use a small nylon cable tie. Push the tapered end of the cable tie through the actual holes in the block. Grab a flashlight, push the cable tie until you see the tip of cable tie exit that passage. You know that line is clean. Pull the tie out and move on to trace the next coolant hole.
I have 1973 Chrysler 30hp. at idle it pumps fine but at high speed it stops . If I go around 1/4 throttle its fine. Had it apart today everything looks fine water is coming up to the top. I checked for blockage nothing, No thermostat from the factory . Its been fine for years. I replaced the impeller this year and this started . But it pumps . I wish I had the old 25 Johnson back . Love your channel . Good information thanks for your love of old motors

Hi Mike, just to let you know I found the water passage blockage on my 3hp lightwin. Took the bottom cover off the powerhead and gasket. There is a water passage area that a hole was blocked with rust. I used a pick a got it through. The water should exit now through into the mid section now completing the water cooling flow. Probably why the guy sold it due to overheating. Just thought I would share this for folks who have this issue and gave up. 😄

T-mike thank you so much this is an excellent video. Thank you especially for going over all of the basics because some of us are brand new to Vintage outboards and it's all new to us. I have a 1958 35 horsepower Johnson Javelin.
good advice on chasing a blocked water passage. going through that right now on a 1965 3hp evinrude lightwin. the water tube is weird how it goes into the power head. not a good design. the tube is clean so checking the power head passages next.
Love your videos buddy. One thing you didnt mention is the thermostat can be old and stuck and block the passage. You can test by dropping in a pan of boiling water then under a cold faucet then back in the boilng water. You should see it open and close or maybe even free up. I have ran my 1975 6hp with no thermostat just to prove that was my problem.
This is important to me because I expect to replace the pump impeller on my 54? Johnson 10 HP motor that has been sitting bout 20 years. Also expect to lube the lower leg.
THANKS MIKE , Love your videos really helping us out. I am teaching my 15 year old grandson. Do you have a video on a 5hp Scott Atwater Bail O' Matic or can you help us figure it out. Thanks Again Bryan, Bridgewater Ma.
Great video TMike also could you please do some videos on general maintenance aka things to do to try and avoid issues thanks for all you do. Chris from OHIO
Hello first of all you've helped me out so much by watching your videos I think they're the greatest I'm a newbie I just bought 14 ft Larson fiberglass boat a 1963 it has a Mercury 50 horsepower 4 cylinder 2-cycle my question is the distributor rotates a quarter inch back and forth when I put it in neutral and raise the throttle the distributor moves to that position and stays there is that normal 4 the distributor to move back and forth like that. I really appreciate your answer. Thank you so very much Bill karras.
Love it! Prob the best video ive seen just overall ! Easy to watch! Easy to listen to! I thi on tbats the first video ive liked lol and I watch a. Bunch
Any idea if running a vintage outboard without the airbox has an effect on overall performance? Maybe it’s worth making a video if there’s a way you can compare it with/without airbox?
I watch your videos all the time and you've helped me out slot, I'm having a problem removing a drive shaft oil seal/retainer it's probably original on a 1955 big twin 25, would you have any suggestions.
Hey t-mike love the informative videos. Ive got a question, i have a 1957 evinrude 18 15020 i believe but my motor looks like the 10hp in this video with no thermostat. Is mine a 10hp or is it before theu put them on the motors? Thanks t mike.
Hey Mike I got a 1972 6 hp Johnson I seem to have a wide-open thermostat my question is do you see the telltale even before the thermostat reaches the proper temperature so that you know your water pump is working well. Thanks Bill
I'd say that's the way it works Bill. Water comes out of the telltale right after starting when the engine is cold and the thermostat closed. I don't think that means for sure though that the water pump is working well, just that it's doing something. I had a couple of broken water pump impeller blades and there was still water coming out of the telltale but the engine ran hot.
Hi Mike, I have the head on the 65 3hp evinrude lightwin broke down a put a water line to the entrance hole but no water is coming out anywhere? I think it should come out the 1/4" hole on the bottom of the powerhead? The 5 screw plate on the bottom will need to come off to chase the passage. Water does go through the exhaust passage and around the cylinders but that's it just sits there and doesn't exit. Motor is overheating so on the chasing it
I did figure it out and posted a video on my channel showing what I did. The passages inside we mostly plugged with hardened mud. I had to run a small drill through some of it to get the junk out. It lowered the temp to almost normal without getting too hot. I did try to test it on the lake and started right up but was lacking power and then died and could restart it so gave up. I bought a new head gasket for it since I just put the old one on that was pretty wasted. Will try it again someday after my other more priority stuff gets done.
If you continue to run the motor in a barrel, will the water circulating through the head continue to get hotter. I always have a water hose continously added cool water to the barrel.
hi from canada just put an impeller in my 1958 scott atwater its a different vane configuration and i cant get it to pump unless its practically submerged. help thanks
I have a problem with my Mercury 35hp. I start it in a barrel but there’s no water coming out. I checked the tell tale and saw a small piece of rubber just sitting at the exit of the hole. I removed it, started the engine again, and another piece came out. Removed that one too, started it again, still no water. It must be impeller pieces. What should I do now? You think compressed air could get them all out?
So I’ve replaced all parts of my cooling system but it still won’t pee, only time I can get it to pee is when I squeeze the muffs on tight, it won’t pee in a bucket
Just got my first outboard motor, your videos are extremely helpful! Thank you!

So you can access the thermostat without dropping the lower end
That's great. Hope I can find parts. You will be my new guide.

Hi Mike what should the Temp be if measured it with a temp gun? Thanks
No higher than 165 degrees

I will find why it's running hot ...some water comes out the blow hole warm but can't keep my hand on its too hot 🤒😱
Good conscience info
I will try to get the water to blow out the blow hole of the 5 1/2 hp brown 1958 or 56 Johnny, it's in the test barrel and runs to hot .
If you continue to run the motor in a barrel, will the water circulating through the head continue to get hotter. I always have a water hose continously added cool water to the barrel.
Yes the water does warm up - I have tested with a pyrometer and never run longer than 5 minutes with no issues. 165 degrees is the limit.
Thx T-Mike!!
hi from canada just put an impeller in my 1958 scott atwater its a different vane configuration and i cant get it to pump unless its practically submerged. help thanks
Impeller must be under water - it’s not a pump sucking up water - it “impells” the water around it upwards - must be under water. Thx.
Would have been good to add trouble shooting and testing of thermostat as they can be a common cause for overheating.
Have a separate video on that issue.
Thank you!
I know most impellers are under the water level but this scot Atwater pump is just under the power head. Don't know how it's gonna work.
I have a problem with my Mercury 35hp. I start it in a barrel but there’s no water coming out. I checked the tell tale and saw a small piece of rubber just sitting at the exit of the hole. Yes. Blow air.

Too change impeller there isn't any bolt on the shift rod ??? Or maby there is .
