    Thanks for the video! One thing I just learned was that these motors have a "Shifting Zone" on the throttle handle. It has to be all the way down in order to shift smoothly R, N, F.
    I learned the hard way, trying to shift into Forward gear while the throttle was slightly out of the "Shifting Zone".... SNAP! I broke my Sector Gear OEM # 43-30802. Thanks again

    Appreciate the content! So far your the only one that has broke down and repaired these late model Mercs in detail. They are incredible, I have 66’ as well and helped me get mine running well 👍

    I think mobile repairs and engine diagnostics would be a learning curve for us all and excellent content, being mechanically minded I get a buzz seeing a poorly starting and running engine turned around and running sweet, so a big thumbs up from me.

    Nice work I do wish I would have you seen the wires and see the points being replaced. I understand on how you don’t want to do customer work, enjoy what you are doing and providing good information on the channel
    Thanks

    I'm the same about customer work on cars, boats and small engine repairs. I work with computers as my day job. 5 years as a car insurance adjuster and I got out. People are nuts about their vehicles. Have gotten downright obnoxious over past 20 years. From the land of Mercury Marine, that poor old girl needs some love.

    The old evinrudes had the glass bowl for a filter. I guess they thought we through all the gas into the water. The new filters are a pain.

    figured out the lower cylinder spark issue, well you figured it out. The shorted kill switch was the problem. I disconneted it and it sparks. I hope to get it in the water soon. Feel free to delete this message once you read it. I just wanted to share. You would have had it for sure!!

    Question, there are 2 wires that come from the kill switch and go to a distribution block, from that block 2 wire come off and head up under where the points are. Mine hVe a ton of corrosion on them and have broke, but the motor still runs? What are they for?

    I have almost the same Tilotson carb on my 1966 20hp. Many people are talking about the importance of putting the lid of the float back the right way... According to the service manual, the ventilation hole should be in the back, which means that the Tilotson text is "in the back", facing the engine block. Your thoughts on this, please....You put it back with the Tilotson text facing forward.....Sorry for my English...

    I just bought a mercury 110 9.8hp and it pretty much needs a whole rebuild, I have faith though. Could you do a video on setting up the throttle linkage? and the transom tilt assembly since it looks like that tilt assembly can mess up the shift as well. I see you work on a lot of these motors and the throttle linkage just doesn't seem right on mine the inside carb plate isn't opening all the way and I can tell it needs adjusted I get maybe a 1/8" of a turn on the tiller handle. I tried adjusting it but it still seems off.
    I do not know the year and the serial number doesn't even come up on the mercury sheet online. But I know its around 1980. The tilt assembly on the transom mount if I disconnect the cable that is on the tilt clamp i can shift forward neutral and reverse no problem.
    Much Thanks Love your videos.

    The flot assembly you can put on, in two different ways... The 1399-5808 text facing the engine, or opposite? Does it matter?

    I got a 1976 110 9.8 hp Merc for free on New Orleans Free Stuff Craigslist. I got spark on both plugs. A few months later I decided to work on it and only got spark from one plug. Found out that the plug wire had come loose inside the coil. Pushed the wire up tight into the coil and got fire. I got no gas to the carb and saw that someone routed the gas line around the front of the motor instead of over the top which caused it to kink and harden as it was bent too much where it went into the carb fuel pump inlet. Now it runs but I think I need to rebuild the carb fuel pump as it does not want to keep a prime enough to run it for more than about 10 minutes and the carb flooded over a couple times when messing with it. There was a lot of oil discharge into the barrel of water from the exhaust. I had changed the whole water pump assembly with new driveshaft gasket. I figure this oil may be coming from when I stored the motor up for a year with it laying on its side. I haven't changed the shift shaft seal and O ring. Guess I have to unscrew the retainer bolt and hold the shaft down like the video says while prying it up and then slipping it over the top of the shaft. Does that sound about right?

    Mercury called their commercial-sized gearbox a "Big foot" so you may certainly also use that descriptive. Expensive parts and needlessly complex design when compared with OMC,s unfortunately led a lot of those Mercs prematurely to the junk yard. Stay safe and be merry ! 🇲🇶

    • @Michaelsbackyardmarina
      @Michaelsbackyardmarina ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point! Maybe that is why there are much more of the OMC's around from the 70's on market place. Thanks for watching

    How was the horsepower of the 9.8 vs 9.9 and some of the others. I have one and it is heavy and it looks about the almost same size as a 20hp?

    I’m about to start working on mine I got a while back and never got to work on. I know I have to work on water pump, fuel pump and carb. But what do I need to get for fuel pump, just a diaphragm? And for the carb do I need to just clean it out?

    • @Michaelsbackyardmarina
      @Michaelsbackyardmarina ปีที่แล้ว

      New diaphragm would be worth putting in. Keep in mind all things rubber are very old and won't work like new stuff. Thanks for watching.

    How on earth do you align the drive shaft, the shift shaft, and the water line while reinstalling the lower end? Myself and two buddies spent 5 hours on it last night and it doesn't seem possible to align all three.

    • @Michaelsbackyardmarina
      @Michaelsbackyardmarina ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure it is in forward gear on the handle and the gear box so you can rotate the prop to get the splines to align. Thanks for watching
