  • In this video I quickly go through how to testing the water pump in an outboard motor. The main tips are having the outboard deep enough in the water and making sure you are turning the drive shaft in the right direction for your outboard motor (most often clockwise)

      Hello, I have changed the impeller on my Mercury 30hp and I have checked that the impeller is stuck and spins when you turn the shaft. but there will be no cooler water from Tell-tale. does pressure have to build up and can it take a long time? thanks in advance.

    I have a ? If you dont have something big enough to hold the lower end unit can you use boat motor ear muffs to test the pump.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use muffs, but sometimes they don't feed the pump properly so don't consider no tell tale as proof the pump is bad.

  • @stewartweaver2778
    @stewartweaver2778 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    good video man. i think i will try a deeper bucket. i get water out of the tell-tale if i hook-up the garden hose but no water in the small bucket i was using. so if i don't get water out of the tell-tale with a deeper bucke. its probably my impeller not pulling suction. because the garden hose is providing the pressure ? does that sound correct to you?

    • @DangarMarine

      Yes, some outboards don't work well on muffs. You can try holding them hard against the outboard until the pump is primed.

    Did this test on a Suzuki DF4 WP which revealed I had a leaking drive shaft seal on the top of the housing - half water coming out the WP discharge, the other half out the leaking shaft seal, result - insufficient pump head pressure to reach the tell tale let alone the cylinder head. I would suggest fitting a tube to the outlet with sufficient height to demonstrate the pump head pressure. As presented the test only demonstrates the pump impeller is rotating and won’t demonstrate pump head. Hope this helps.

But normally we have had it in a tank with much lower level. So my question is how does it work when its in the sea and ihe water level is not that high?

    Hey cobber. Brand new housing, impeller and still not pumping is it I've put something together wrong although I've done it twice going off a few different videos..
    I guess I'm really asking is there anything under the pump housing that could be blocking access to the pump. Everything else works and runs perfectly. 1980-90's Yamaha 8hp 2st
    Love ya videos so far this old outboard has been a pain in the arse and I can't afford a real mechanic.

    My son and I had taken ours apart and worked on the impeller. Once we were done we reassembled everything and... no water flow. We had the lower unit in a tub of water with enough to allow the intakes to be below the surface but your tip about lowering it even more was the key point to prime the pump. We tried again with a taller water tub and voila... problem solved...! Thanks so much for posting this video. It saved us so much time and money. Cheers..!

    Great tip.
    Also, if you have checked everything out and everything appears to look good and the water level is high enough and it's STILL not pumping, look closely at the seal on top of the impellor housing. If it has a seal. Some housings don't have seals. Some do. If they don't, look at the housing itself. Make sure its not distorted from heat. If you stick a short hose into the housing where the water shoots out of the housing, there should be a good stream of water coming out of the hose. Just keep your face away from the sudden gush of water.

    What happens when the water pump area plastic guess warm? Is this normal. It's pumping really good. Sometimes when the water comes out of the peephole it's warm. I don't even have 100 hours on my Mercury 60 horsepower outboard

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's pumping water okay I'd say it is normal. There is plenty of friction in those impellers that is normally just cooled by the water it is pumping. They can melt if they run dry. The engine will warm up the water coming out of the tell tale.

    Changed the water pump and gaskets, raised the water level in the 'bucket' to just about where the water pump is situated and poured in 5-1 ratio of plain white vinegar which was cheaper at the supermarket, cancelled the descaling fluid......Ran for about 1/2 an hour and was left with a tablespoon full of sand, shells and silt in the bottom. Rinsed with fresh water and the tell tale and exhaust were pumping water out. Job well done

    On the basis of this video I was very careful to test my Honda BF45 (which runs anti-clockwise) with the drill running in that direction. No joy. Took pump apart (new kit had been installed) and checked but still no joy. Then I checked the parts catalogue online and saw the crankshaft terminates in a 'primary drive gear' while the sump contains the bearing and short shaft assembly for a 'primary driven gear'. So motor runs against the clock but drive shaft doesn't. Tricky.

    Wow great info. I just assumed if the water was above the intake it was good to test. I just got lucky adding extra water into the barrel thinking it would help. Feel like a pinhead with a Phd once again!! Got my Johnson 78 15hp back in the water thanks to your advice/video on pumps, impellers and lower unit seals. Wish I could buy you a brew or two brother. I kind of feel like I stole something without paying you... :-(

    I have a 61 Evinrude 5.5 HP that is not pumping water. I replaced the impeller and tested it using your manual test. It's still not pumping water. The old impeller looked OK to me but I replaced it anyhow. Is it possible the impeller was installed backwards? I assembled it the same as the previous one.

    Stu, once again your videos are a life saver. Planning to take the wife out on the lake tomorrow and when I was prepping the boat earlier in the week, it wasn't pumping water. Thankfully I knew what not to do and it didn't overheat but I remembered this video and tried getting a bigger tub. Bam. Pumping just fine. Also a nice side effect of the engine getting a little warm was my moisture misfire gremlin was cooked out of the ignition system. :P

      We did indeed. Had a little issue with the gear selector not wanting to go in to reverse. Looks like its a cable issue and not the motor itself.

    • @peterjensen6844
      @peterjensen6844 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was definitely the cable. had to adjust the "nut" on the engine side of the gear selector cable so that at "full throw" reverse, it wasn't pushing the rod far enough back. Takes me back to my amateur bike mechanic days. :P

    I inspected the pump and housing on my dt 15 suzuki and it looks fine so I Replaced the grommet around the drive shaft and it is not pumping water very high .I also see there is a fair bit of water coming out between the shaft and the grommet I replaced(the ne on top of the housing)I am temped to replace the impeller and the plate and gasket to be see if it will pump more water .I do not think there should be water coming out around the lip of the grommet and the shaft but i cannot remember if it did this on my other outboard.
    The pump looks like it has OK pressure but it will not go up around the engine and out the pee hole.
    Any suggestions

  • @masonryjoe

    I'm going to try that trick tomorrow, I took it apart and everything looks ok with the impeller, my impeller only has 3 blades, factory made that way? Also, when you put the lower unit back together with the upper does the pipe that goes into where the water comes out of the impeller housing have to be tight, mine is sloppy but looks like that is the way it is designed?

  • @shawnnance3670
    @shawnnance3670 ปีที่แล้ว

    What could the problem be if the pump is pumping water but when you reassemble the lower unit, it won't pump water up to the motor? I used the drill technique like you did here and it works fine, but it won't pump the water up into the motor when running.

    Thank You I rebuilt my water pump reinstalled my Foot (Lower Unit) No water with muffs.Placed it in a barrel up to the water intake’s and no water. Removed the lower unit 3 more times to re check my work. Scratched my head,slept on it and tried again the next morning NADA! Searching the IT and found your posting. Repositioning the engine in order to get deeper in the barrel and WooHoo, my work is good and proves a point to me that muffs can’t be trusted nor can a barrel if you are not close to the cavation plate. Thanks again and as you said if it were a self priming pump things could have worked but now I know. Stay Safe and Enjoy the Water ✌️

      Thanks for that info. I was just looking at a 6HP Yamaha tonight with muffs and it wasn't pumping water - never thought a minute that it could be a priming issue. Still buying it, because it's a fairly easy fix either way, but I'll have to barrel test it when I get it home now.

    My old 1997 johnson 50hp seems to have issue with water flow. Took the lower unit down, run a garden hose to the water pump inlet port, it takes over 20 seconds for the water to come out the pee hole. Is it supposed to be that long? I might have a leak somewhere in the system or is it clogged up?

  • @condor5635

    My Yamaha 15hp squirts water when it's is in forward or reverse. Doesn't that mean direction of rotation does not matter? Additionally new impellers don't have a pitch correct? So that further seems to indicate it does not matter. Maybe I am wrong.

    Thanks for showing us how to solve the mystery of why our newly installed water pump was not working! Not having the water level high enough when testing prevented the stream from flowing. It would have been better if we had found your video before our fourth breakdown and re-assembly, but my 16 year old is now an expert on both impellers and thermostats.

    My motor used to work with ear muffs... then one day I was showing my boat to sell it (with the ear muffs) I noticed the stream getting weak and the next time I started the motor with the ear muffs again nothing was coming out so I checked the hose nothing in there so I suspected it was the water pump. Changed it and still not working with ear muffs. Going to try it in a deep reservoir of some sort.. I’m just wondering if it worked with ear muffs before why wouldn’t it work now?? I’ve never liked using the ear muffs tho because I didn’t think it was the best method but never had a reservoir big enough.
