SSD Upgrading An Old Laptop & Cloning The Drive Tutorial - HDD to Any SSD, Using Free Software

  • In this video I guide you through upgrading the storage in an older laptop to a new high-speed SSD to improve the performance of programs and greatly speed up the loading times. I use completely free software for this process and copy the old hard drive over to the new SSD entirely as it is. That allows us to just put the SSD inside the laptop and everything 'just work' with no need to reinstall windows or any of your programs again.
On this Dell Latitude D630 with a cheap Kingston A400 SSD the startup time went from 1min 10sec to just 22 seconds! That's over three times faster than before on startup alone.
This will work with any brand of hard drive (HDD) and any brands of solid state drive (SSD). I use entirely free third-party/independent software or programs included in windows by default to complete this process. You don't have to buy any software for this process.
In this how to video I show the process when cloning from a hard drive smaller than the SSD you are installing as an upgrade. This process is slightly different if your current drive is larger than the new one you've purchased - because you can't fit a bigger drive onto a smaller one obviously. BUT; there are ways around in which it can be done and I plan to have a video guide of that process made very soon.
    WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
    - A laptop
    - Your new drive
    - A USB to SATA cable
    - A USB Stick / Thumb Drive of 4GB or larger
    SOFTWARE DOWNLOADS:
    - The Ultimate Boot CD ISO (Bootable Software to clone our drive)
    www.ultimatebootcd.com/
    - RUFUS Software (To make your bootable USB stick)
    rufus.ie/
The laptop used in this video guide is a Dell Latitude D630 and the solid state drive I used is the Kingston A400 240GB.
All laptops do vary and you may or may-not have a boot menu, If you don't have a boot menu you will have to change the boot order in the BIOS setup.
Usually most laptops will have a boot menu which can be accessed by pressing F12 or Escape (ESC). You can usually access the BIOS using the F2 or delete (DEL) key.
Disassembly of every laptop model will be different. The most complete website for guides on disassembling laptops has probably got to be iFixIT. You can find their laptop disassembly guides here: www.ifixit.com/Device/PC_Laptop
If the full capacity of your new drive doesn't show in my computer then you'll need to use windows 'Disk Management' utility to extend the C: drives windows partition as I do towards the end of the video. This allows you to use the full capacity of the new SSD drive.

This is pretty good. I just got a D630 at a thrift store and I'm looking to upgrade it and show it come love. Another tutorial showed the person using a SSD bracket, but I can see its not necessary. I'll probably clone using a linux tool on my lubuntu boot stick though.

Hey Nathan , i also have a d630 and upgraded it to ssd. Have you tried bumping up the Ram on this laptop? I have 4G right now. Can i add 2x4Gb to it? Will it make a difference?

I think the most it can support is 8GB of total ram. But I believe you need to make sure that you're using the latest bios and install a 64bit operating system, because 32bit will only recognize up to 4GB of ram.

Is there anything we need to about the drivers for the ssd? I'm thinking about putting one of these in my D630 too, but it only has Windows XP and Linux Mint. So I don't know if I can do what I need or...

An SSD doesn't require a driver. Simply clone your existing drive onto the new SSD and it should boot up like nothing has changed. Albeit a lot more quickly!
      Hope this helps.

@@NathanPH Greatly, thanks! I'm messing with a Latitude D630. I've got Linux on it now, and a cpu upgrade on the way. If only ddr2 sodimms weren't so expensive, haha. Thanks for your help!

Oh...duh, that's right, yours was also the same laptop, lol. It seems to be a popular one for this sort of thing.
