I watched so many videos and read articles about this, this one was easily the best. Managed to clone my SSHD perfectly! I don't have a bracket for it so I'll just use double sided tape to hold it in place

What I did when I built my computer was put in mobile racks. These racks mount inside the computer and your hard drives go inside sleeves that slide into mobile racks. I just turn the computer off, take a key and insert it into the mobile rack and pull out the hard drive. I can clone my hard drive in about 20 minutes with Acronis True Image. There are other fine programs out there but this one I have been using for a long time. I keep 2 copies in rotation all the time. Security is the first think in computer operation. Enjoy your computer and keep it cloned....
so happy to know how easy SSD are to be formated, but specially to be cloned!! I'm an old school cloning guy (phantom cloning software, you know...😢😢😢😢). Thanks a lot!!!!
You even make beginners like me feel that maybe I could do this! So sick of new cheap pieces of crap computers; makes sense to upgrade an old box. You give me the courage to try it.
If you are going to clone or image a boot drive, use a imaging software. I use makrium reflect. I use this because I am on Windows 7 and no support available now. So I make a image every couple of months to an external hard drive, about 2TB size is good. If I wanted to put that image on a SSD then I just select the image from the software choices, and let it run. Very simple and you ALWAYS have a back up system somewhere.
Thank you for making this video! All the details are explained very well! I'm going to upgrade my old PC too! In the beginning, I was thinking, 28-minute video? But, every minute is worth it!
one thing I do that I'm surprised more people don't do is use the boot drive for just Windows and all apps. I have a 500GB M2 drive as the boot drive and with Windows and all apps installed the space taken is just 114GB. So that's all I have to clone. All data is kept on other hard drives. I still use a desktop computer so this is easier to do on a desktop where you can have multiple hard drives. If the M2 drive should crap out I just get a new one and rebuild it from a saved clone image. No data loss. I never saw the purpose of having a 1TB boot drive. Yeah, you can partition it but I'd rather save my data elsewhere and not on the same drive I boot from. Thanks for video. Very nicely done.
Hi, unfortunately on my Tablet PC, no details of the kit from Amazon you show, appear as the view is either of other videos or comments. Please advise the details I will need to buy the kit. Your showing how the supplied data cable can be added to the PC data cable is a real bonus, because in my PC the cable is too tight to manoeuvre. It is a real pleasure to listen to your commentary, which you present in a clear pleasant way and slowly enough to be absorbed and understood. Thank you for posting and Regards Joe.
Thank you for this tutorial. I found it interesting that your SSD size was so small. My older HP C drive is far larger. (Cloning process begins 14:00.)

Very good video, but one thing you left out was how important it is to ground yourself to the chassis before reaching your hand inside. You could very easily zap a component in there and fry it if you happen to have a static charge on your body.
Thank you Fred for a very informative video on CLONING (the rest of it was good too). I am wanting to upgrade my Dell XPS 8930 SSD Card from 256gb to 2T, which is where my OS & Windows Pro is. I don't believe he didn't show changing the BIOS this is very easy to do and everyone should know how when the computer is starting it will show you what key to press to go into setup it's a different key on different computers (f2 on my present computer) then find something called boot device configuration press enter then go to the hard disk boot priority press enter (press enter again if you had more than one hard drive to give you the options to choose the one with your boot file on it) Then select as your first boot device. on my computer you can then press f10 "save and exit setup" or hit Esc until the save option comes up finish that and you should be good to go! note: if you had more than one hard drive it might be a good idea to disconnect the extra ones until you have completely finished the cloning process! Now in most cases even if you haven't done anyting in the bios it will probably still work finding the only hard drive that is there which is why and how this guys been getting away with this without telling you but if it didn't work you might be screwed until you figured out that you can always get into the computer bios while it is starting up! yeah sounds good to me humor!
For reasons you stated like Backups don't copy programs or Operating system. I make back ups but ounce a month I Clone my Boot drive because it will save time having to reinstall the Operating system and all my editing programs and all my programs.
Useful video. Sometimes I find it tough to start a small screw with my fingers, so I put the screw onto the screwdriver then aim it into the hole. If you use the right sized screwdriver it will hold the cross-headed screw even when horizontal. If you magnetise the screwdriver a little, by sliding a magnet along it once, then that can help too. But keep magnets away from the old-style spinning hard drives!
Good morning. First, I would like to think you for your very professional presentation - outstanding teaching. I’m a 74 year old NON-Nerd who has a billion questions but I’ll only ask one at this time. You started your presentation discussing the cloning of a laptop using a USB 3.0 to SSD drives cable. If I have a USB 3.0 port on my desktop, can I use the laptop procedure instead of going into the desktop itself, other than disconnecting the old HD and installing the SSD after cloning? Thanks for your time. Phil
Hi Phil, yes this should work. If you are trying to clone onto a HDD (the big, old spinning drives), it is possible the cable may not be able to sufficiently power that type drive. But if you are cloning onto a SSD, that should work just fine.
Nice take on how to go from a regular HD to a SSD. For me the best take from your script was to always go to the new drive's web site and get the migration software there and it's free! We are the other side, the often builders of PC's and restoring Mac Pro computers so our down take was ... the many loose cables not tied together! LOL I suppose before they made windowed computer cases no one ever bothered to neatened up the inside. Now zip ties are part of the build. Restoring three Mac Pro computers, strangely there are few cables in the case. Oh and the direct connect cable to a loose sata hard drive is a wonderful tool for doing disk images with (no external case required and it's put back in it's original box once imaged).
For those who don't know. You don't need to remove the power cable from your Hard drive. Instead go into the cmos (also known as bios). And change the boot sequence to the SSD drive. And once you do it you will boot from the SSD. And you can use the old hard drive as a second drive. For other types of files like photos, music, home movies, etc......
I had a boss who was not at peace with "Let's get them glasses." His irritation with the need for glasses taught me pretty rapidly to put up with such simple difficulties. You covered being sure not to overwrite a disk with data you want to keep, but said if you're cloning onto a blank disc, there's nothing to worry about. How about this: If it's possible to clone to a disk with data on it, thereby losing that data, is it equally possible to engage the cloning software such that it tries to clone from your target disk to your source disk? If the software allows this, you could easily wipe your source disk! Thanks for the otherwise clear instructions. (By the way, it's amusing near the end to keep catching your reflection in a part of the tower.)
Thanks so much! Worked perfectly for me. Updated my Dell 2330 with a 1 gig SSD and 16MB of ram. They Samsung Magician software to mirror image the old drive worked great and took about an hour. The whole process only to 1 1/2 hours. Truly appreciated. Would love to see a video in changing the Bio's for my Dell 2330 so I can load Windows 11. Thx.
Absolutely love Samsung Magician to clone from small NVME boot drive to a large Samsung NVME. Moving 256g from original to new 980 Pro 2TB took less than 18 minutes. Stored the original 256g NVME drive in the transfer case that I used for cloning for safe keeping. It doesn't get any easier than that.
I have a 2.5 inch SATA enclosure for USB 3.0 which essentially has all the functionality of that cable but gives you the benefit of a case. That is nice for people like me with cats that sometimes walk on desks and tables, that way Fluffy won't static shock your drive when she gets too close.
Fred, Thanks for the info on getting the free cloning programs. I was using my purchased Acronis 12 and needed to clone a GPT drive. Acronis 12 doesn't allow this. Thanks to your tip I was able to get AcronisWD to complete the clone.
Great guide. Love that you took the time to record yourself on Video w/ props and TV Scenes. So much more Personable than just taking over a desktop display.
One trick you can do, assuming your Acronis etc. is not from your drive manufacturer is to temporarily add a third drive of the correct brand, you don't need to write to, or read from this drive, it's just there to make the software happy.
My computer is barely 2 years old and the SSD is almost full. I've barely paid off this thing and am not in the mood to take it to the ubreakifix people and pay them hundreds of dollars more to install something that seems fairly easy judging by this video. I have my 2T SSD sitting here in front of me and I feel very confident that I can do this! Although, that thing about the Bios is just the thing that will happen to me, haha. Crossing my fingers that it will go as smoothly as this video demonstrated. Thank you!
Sounds like you don't need to clone a drive. You just need to install the new 2TB drive as a second drive and move some files off the original drive to the new drive. You'll just have two drives in your system. The original will be the boot drive as always, and you can store your new files on the new drive. You can change where Windows stores documents by default, for example. Or photos or videos. And of course, you can put your files anywhere you want yourself. You aren't bound by the default location that Windows sets for those files.
19:32 "Check out TH-cam if you're having trouble getting it to boot from the new drive. I'm sure you can find a video on how to rest your bios settings." From the computer... that... now... won't... boot... lol
nice job. would have liked you to warn people to insure the drive they are going to clone is clean and does not contain spyware, malware, or viruses. Also, explain that you do not wish to be putting temporary files onto SSD drive as re-writing to SSD drives shorten their lifespan.
I absolutely agree with Mr Temporale below. I was ahead of you often but NEVER behind you and that is important. I came here from a video from another contributer on the same subject a little confused, very confused even setting the delivery speed to 75%. Yours was clear, thank you. I am replacing my laptop HD with an SSD and I have seen somewhere how to delete your existing HD windows, now unnecessary files. I hope it was you explaining. :-)) :-D
EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT PRESENTATION. NICE TO HAVE A TECH PRESENTATION WITHOUT HISTERICAL BALONEY BY PRESENTER. LARGE NEEDED SUBJECT FOR PEOPLE UPGRADING NOW TO SSD. A RIVAL TO CARY HOLZMAN. PLEASE DO MORE. GREAT CAMERA PRESENCE.
Cool theme music...LOL. Anyway I'm going to use your process, but can forgo a lot of the cabling. I'm cloning from my SATA HDD to an m.2 NVME. When It comes in I'll install it to the socket, so unless I'm wrong it should just show up in the 'Data Migration' software and I should be able to run it. Is that so? Anyway, Thanks for your info. You'll save me a ton of work. BTW I gave ya a thumbs-up and subscribed
The best way to make a backup of your complete drive is not by making a clone. Instead, use the native Windows application for creating a system image. Then you can restore your drive from the image file. To do this on Win 10, go to Control Panel > Backup and Restore (Windows 7) > Create system image. I do this every week in the event of a catastrophic failure, I always have a fairly recent version of my operating system.
Excellent Video, very well explained in no-nonsense layman's language !!! However, it would have been a 'Bonus' for the purpose of your video presentation, if you showed the 'Before' Screen while the Old System (Mechanical Drive) was loading versus the New System (SSD) was loading !!!

I'm sure is reassuring to anyone without a lot of computer experience.😊 I have built several computers, but have never cloned a drive before, and this video will definitely assist me. Lastly, not that it's important, but I have a feeling that the host is either an active member or veteran of Military service, as am I.😉
definitely helped me with instructions. My desktop is slower than and want to install ssd
Thanks for greatvideo
I watched so many videos and read articles about this, this one was easily the best. Managed to clone my SSHD perfectly! I don't have a bracket for it so I'll just use double sided tape to hold it in place
Superb video. Followed your instructions installed my SSD without any issues. Thanks
Very clear and very precise. You have given me the confidence to have a go. You do not um and ah or use IT jargon you just keep it reasonably simple. Now all I have to do is purchase and replace. I will let you know how I get on. Just do not hold your breath it won't be that quick. Many many thanks. Best installation guide I have seen on TH-cam.
"I will let you know how I get on" 3 years later...
Fred Kelley, you make the most professional video demo of anyone I have ever seen. Your audio sound is great. The big screen TV in the back that provides additional information just makes for a much more enjoyable training session. Thanks! . . . Andrew Buffington - Texas
After 11:32 a little miniature of your face appears on the power source of the P C.Amusing. Good tutorial for the beginning to moderate user of PCs.
If you have no pc-skills and dont understand how to handle then its cheap and crap....
Awesome, exactly what I needed to know. I am upgrading from a 500 GB SSD to a 1 TB SSD. I am sure it will go smoothly after watching this.
You look like a sailor, I will call you Captain Cap'n. Thank you for these clear and informative instructions cap'n.
I found using an external SSD Case to be cheaper than using a data cable. The case comes with the cable for laptops.
one thing I do that I'm surprised more people don't do is use the boot drive for just Windows and all apps.
Awesome video! Werther it is three years old, Downloaded the clone software for Kingston and Samsung cloning
It's great, because I cloned my drive ( New Drive ) and it was showing the new ones size, To be as small as the older drive, Had to make a new partition
with a drive letter, to excuse to complete drive, not what I wanted! thanks again , from UK 🔥
Hello Nerd, This is a great video. I didn't know that the hard drive companies supply this cloning software! I'm so excited to get started on this!
This is very good, and just what I needed. I put a new Samsung SSD with Linux Mint on my PC, and it was so much faster than the old Win 7 HDD, that I want to get another SSD. I still need Win 7 for the software that doesn't have a Linux equivalent. This video shows me exactly how to do it, and what I need to buy. You have another subscriber.
Just what I was looking for and w/ links to needed parts. Excellent!! A big relief. 6 stars.
"Let's get the glasses." I feel you man!
Congratulations, Nerd Sidekick. You got a new subscriber! I like your "layman's terms" approach. Keep up the good work!
It is very easy, smooth explanation, without redundant information, and with full step by step visual explanation. It is helpful, even for IT magicians.
Just upgraded from 500GB HDD to 1TB SSD, Using MACRIUM REFLECK. No muss no fuss or making USB Boot Drives. Outstanding Cloning Software.
my samsung data migration software can't seem to find my samsung 850 evo in windows 8.1 or 10. I used a usb to sata/ide adapter like you had but no go. I had a samsung 840 evo that worked fine. This is the second one that replaced another one that didn't work.
Thank you very much for the links to the drives and especially the installation kit.
Excellent video!!! To the point and easily explained. Just what I was looking for, a step-by-step process from beginning to end with all the info you need. Thanks so much! 👍👍👍👍👍
Does Samsung Data Migration work with all brands of drives?
@@leothehuman_9476 Samsung magician will read from any drive but will only write to a Samsung drive.
You probably already have the answer to your question but I replied just in case you don't .
I always buy Samsung because of their reputation and because their cloning tool is so easy to use . Bought a Crucial ssd once , never again
Perfect explanation took about 1hour start to finish on a Dell 3020 optiplex.
Thanks!!
This is a perfect video for my level. Very detail and easy to follow. Thank you for making this video. I am a bit more confident in replacing my hard drive now.
This video helps me know what I need to do BEFORE I insert the new card and what I need to do AFTER I insert the new card. Any additional tips you can offer would be appreciated.
This is the best explained way to clone a Drive. Thanks.
Very simple and concise video . Informative and easy to absorb . Well done
Great instructor, answers questions before there asked!!!!!
I have been doing this for decades; but then I am a nerd LOL, engineer, and IT pro.
Good video though. And it played well at a full 2X playback speed.
Very informative video. As I will be updating my SSD to a bigger, and newer, SSD, this came in very handy.
For reasons you stated like Backups don't copy programs or Operating system. I make back ups but ounce a month I Clone my Boot drive because it will save time having to reinstall the Operating system and all my editing programs and all my programs.
Nice, easy to follow for a first-timer such as myself.
your lession is so clear and definite
thnaks
good to check on a cloning prog that will 'align the ssd clusters' when the image is being written to it.
Very interested. Can you recommend a program that offers this feature?
@@NerdSidekick Wanted to let you know that the transfer from HHD to SSD was so easy that even a NON-Nerd could do it. Thanks again. Phil
Great video, easy step by step instructions.
not yet done watching but half of the video is full understable
"In the case of my case" =))). Excellent tutorial, thank you! Clear and structured. Like the late '90s IT stuff.
Great presentation. Very helpful. The info about the USB /power cable for data transfer and the adaptor kit from Amazon were not seen,
I have a 2.5 inch SATA enclosure for USB 3.0 which essentially has all the functionality of that cable but gives you the benefit of a case. That is nice for people like me with cats that sometimes walk on desks and tables, that way Fluffy won't static shock your drive when she gets too close.
Informative step-by-step video but would like to have seen how you accessed the screws in the case on the other side of the SSD.
Dan. On a lot of cases you can open the other side to install the screws. If not, putting in the ones you can will be safe enough.
Hi Fred....Thanks for the video...Really like your style in presenting videos...Wish you could do more...Thanks again.
19:32 "Check out TH-cam if you're having trouble getting it to boot from the new drive. I'm sure you can find a video on how to rest your bios settings."
From the computer... that... now... won't... boot... lol
Out of curiosity, why the duplicate video in the upper left of your computer? Well presented information, sir.
You're video was really helpful and saved me from buying a sata- usb cable :) thankyou
nice job. would have liked you to warn people to insure the drive they are going to clone is clean and does not contain spyware, malware, or viruses. Also, explain that you do not wish to be putting temporary files onto SSD drive as re-writing to SSD drives shorten their lifespan.
Thank you so much. This was a fantastic presentation. Loved all the additional information you provided. Will certainly grab that kit!
Really liked the video and the composition on the Eiffel Tower photo…
EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT PRESENTATION. NICE TO HAVE A TECH PRESENTATION WITHOUT HISTERICAL BALONEY BY PRESENTER. LARGE NEEDED SUBJECT FOR PEOPLE UPGRADING NOW TO SSD. A RIVAL TO CARY HOLZMAN. PLEASE DO MORE. GREAT CAMERA PRESENCE.
John, thanks for your kind words. I'll "do more"!
This is truly a great presentation. The details provided were given in a manner that can be easily understood. Great job.
Great video - just one thing, do I have to use the same brand SSD as the old hard drive in the old computer?
