    My favorite thing about Luke Skywalker is that he is an ordinary person. He's just a farmboy who inherited enough sensitivity from his father to gain rudimentary jedi training. He is not very powerful, very quick, or even very clever. But he has emotion, friends, ideals, a purpose. At the climax in this movie, Luke's frustration that his father will never cease to be anything but a cold, ruthless monster lashes out in pain and fury. The raw emotion of this ordinary man as he finally breaks his limit is a powerful climax.

    • @twilightzoneseinfeld
      @twilightzoneseinfeld 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      While he starts of as not being as such, he does end up being “very powerful, very quick, or even very clever” (though whether he is the most of these traits varies on continuity, and that’s another story). Idk where this idea about him comes from.
      I only really agree with that when it comes to thing like his personality flaws.
      In all other regards he’s never portrayed as just a rudimentary Jedi or an “average Joe”. Otherwise the Emperor wouldn’t have taken a vested interest in him like he did his father before him.
      Kind of the reason why he advances faster than almost any other Jedi I can think of despite his “rudimentary training”, which was pretty much only “rudimentary” during ANH/Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back. ROTJ has his training being nigh-complete and he is still more than competent enough to fight and overwhelm Vader).

    • @jonathonbartos5420
      @jonathonbartos5420 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Luke is anything but "ordinary". Think about it. In course of about 5 years, Luke goes from a completely untrained farm boy to a Jedi Knight capable of defeating Darth Vader in battle, and with enough force of will to turn away from the dark side when he felt himself on the precipice of falling. And he really only had maybe a week of formal training, the rest was self-taught. Luke was every bit as remarkable as his father. Perhaps even more so.

      @@hectorvalverde5044 When they duel on Bespin, Vader was intentionally holding back because he wanted to capture and convert him. Once they duel in RotJ, Vader was giving it his all. He knew it was a test from Palpatine and that put him in an unwinnable position. He resolved to kill Luke if necessary, but still wanted him to join the dark side. It nearly backfired when Luke overpowered him, because it showed Vader was no longer useful and could be replaced as Palpatine's apprentice. But Luke realized the error of his ways in time to stop.

    Of all the light saber battles in all of the movies, this one is the greatest one. The raw emotion in this scene has not been topped since. You can have your dual light sabers and acrobatics in the prequels. You can have your fight with a dozen red guards. None of them will equal Luke vs. Vader EVER.

    This track was perfect. It was "epic" and booming, fitting a final battle, but was also deeply sad, fitting the fact that Luke was beginning to fall.
    It's the first time I've ever rooted AGAINST the hero winning the climactic duel with the villain. Because winning that duel meant becoming the next Vader, a fate Luke has been trying to avoid for 3 movies. And this music just nails it...

    I love this piece. It's almost... unsuitable for a battle, no loud bass, no screaming choir, no battle marching drums, just a slowly building rumble of vocals and perfectly picked string chords. The result is so powerful when you see it with the duel and emotions on screen.

      Exactly why it's brilliant. You feel intense sorrow as you know Vader is about to lose, and that Luke is defeating him with the very anger and hate Vader recommended. It's a fight for both of their souls at the same time.

    Gosh darn it guys... If there was 1 thing that disappointed me about TFA it was that the new music was not as memorable as either original or prequel trilogy's. It's so disappointing because, maybe a week or 2 before TFA release I came across a video that must have been Star Wars related because I paused the video & exited the window. The reason why I did that was because I had yet 2 expose myself to any promotional material for the movie, I waited a year without being exposed to anything you guys! I wanted 2 come into the movie fresh & so that included any new orchestral pieces by John Williams. But the snippet I heard from the video was so beautiful, it reminded me of this piece & I eagerly awaited 2 get 2 the part of TFA where it played... But it never came. The closest u get is Snoaks theme, but it didn't cut it. Love John Williams forever, but darn... I wish I had searched it when I was logged in that way I could look through my history. Does anyone know of music pieces like this?

    Around 1:20 there is a similar sound to across the stars, and I think this actually fits because all that's left of Padme to Anakin is their kids and Luke the One Vader is fighting is eventually the one that brings Anakin back, after all Anakin did say he couldn't live without Padme and he truly couldn't loosing her and his fear made him fully turn to Vader until Luke who has part of Padme within comes and saves Anakin and Anakin brings balance after killing Palpatine the man who could've been very responsible for Anakin's dreams and Padme's death.

    The thing about 1:13 is that it reminds you of EVERYTHING before this. The old republic, the prequels, the clone wars, and literally everything else before the OT. Before the empire, the battles were huge in scale, but it all led to this single duel thousands of years after the war between the jedi and sith began. This really was meant to be the end of the entire story, period, which is why the sequels were never a good idea to begin with, even if they didn't bring back palps

    "The male vocal choir in this sequence is unlike anything we hear anywhere else in the breadth of the saga, and that's what makes it so powerful. The music conveys that this is the moment, the conflict on which the absolute fate of the galaxy hinges. It's the dead Jedi wailing for Luke's slip towards the darkness, it's the spirit of the Sith in pure rapture, it's the voice of the Force lamenting the struggle it finds itself in. Utterly captivating."

      From 1:13 is when Luke screams "NOOO!" And starts going ham on Vader, that whole segment is the leading up to Luke defeating him, and the 'Dun Dun' at the end of the melody is when he chops of his hand, that piece of music was made for the duel and it's perfect. It builds up as Luke keeps chopping away, my favourite scene from all of Star Wars.

    • @Fullbatteri
      @Fullbatteri 9 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      +Lucien d'Aversa I just wrote this above, but, I totally agree:
      "It's because the conflict between son and father.
      Luke trying to protect those he loves, and Leia, from falling to the Dark side.
      The moment is so strong, so masterfully timed, the music is so glorious, the camera work so powerful, the choreography so natural (almost real), that you can't help but feel THE FEELS trough all those brief moments the action and the drama hit the screen.
      No 10 minutes Mustafar fight, no double lightsword fight, no exaggerated music and athletics and effects, can compete with real emotion, and storytelling, with real conflict.
      This is why the original movies are better, not because they are "CLASSIC" or because nostalgia, no.
      They are better because of the emotion, the story and the lovable characters, the ideas behind, the master use of all the technology the had to tell the story, even if it wasn't too much, they had music, and dialogues, simple (and real) images, camera tricks, to tell the story.
      1:13 to 1:46 are testaments of that amazing craft, not just good music, but a combination of the work of many people that dedicated their time to tell a story, and you can feel the passion in the final product, even with all of his flaws."

    1:13 is a beautiful piece, and to me shadows Luke's burst of hate and use of the darkside to defeat Vader. It also shadows that anyone can fall to the darkside, (though once he realizes it Luke turns away).

    • @Kenshiro3rd
      @Kenshiro3rd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Not hate... fear. He used his fear and desperation to save his sister at all costs, even if it damned him. Then once he realized what he was doing, that he had fallen to the darkside and was about to kill the man he came to save... he stopped and turned his back on it... instead trusting his fate to a father he knew deep down still had good in him... a father he knew was ruled & controlled by his emotions... and that those same emotions that had driven him to the dark side were the key to his redemption and path back to the light. So KNOWING that the Emperor would kill him for it, he threw his light sabre away and rejected the darkside... gambling that the one last bit of good left in Vader would compel him to stop his master from killing his son... gambling because in that moment he knew if THAT didn't work, NOTHING would. If it didn't work, it meant that Luke was wrong about his father, and the battle was lost before it began.

    Probably my favorite piece ever produced by John Williams... There's just so much emotion in this scene so much that led up to this. Return of The Jedi is my favorite installment. Not that I don't love A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back ... The original trilogy is just amazing so, it's a hard pick but, return of the Jedi just speaks to me the most. I wish they'd release the original theatrical edit of Star Wars on bluray. Honestly I don't hate the prequels as much as others... Still don't like Jar Jar and their quality is no where near as good as the original trilogy and their no where near perfect... But they aren't totally void of entertainment and good moments. I'm going to get backlash for not hating the prequels... But that's my opinion...

    Into The Trap
    The fireworks over Endor as Luke cremated Vader.
    But 1:14-1:48 in this track is probably my favorite piece from the entire series... powerful, emotional, personal, victorious....as many have said, this is good conquering evil, and ultimately, love conquering hate.

    From 1:02-145 I just get chills. You see the galaxy's hope fighting to protect his friends and family. against his own evil enslaved father. And its the moment of truth, and yet the music intimidates you from cheering. Instead of the hero beating the villain, you realize the hero may actually BECOME the villain! John Williams did a great job and this is his most powerful song in my book. So much weight is carried enough to bring back memories not only of Luke's struggles in the originals, but even transcends to Vader's struggles as a Jedi. And for the first time you don't want the hero to win. Because it'll be a victory taken from the wrong place that may even destroy him. As a child, these 43 seconds taught me the TRUE influence and power of the Sith. The Dark Side not just temptation, fear, or even anger. Its the dark power that COMES from those emotions that TRULY tempts you. The Dark Side is not scary because its evil. Its scary because its inside you. Its what you feel in your darkest moments. Its the Cold that grips your heart when your enraged. Its the power that doesn't ask you, but begs you, and commands you to take it in the name of all you hold dear...not realizing that if you do, you'll lose everything to it. Including all that you once stood for. No music has ever had such power over me than this one did when I was a kid. And every time I hear it, the scene plays out again in my head and I just get chills.

    The setting, the characters, the editing, THE MUSIC. This scene is one of the most powerful scenes in cinema history

      Yes I totally, 100% agree with you!
      But, I have to say, I allways considered the "scene" to end when Vaders hand get choped off, even though technically the scene ends when Palpatine gets thrown down the hole.

    First time I heard and saw this scene, was a moment ill never forget. THIS is how the fight between anakin and obi wan should have been in ROTS. THIS is the quality of emotion, music score and excellent character build up, tension and drama that the new episodes lacked completely.
    Truly spine-tingling, gutt wrenching stuff.

      Unknown The fight was good but it could have used more emotion. It's Obi-Wans apprentice who he's had since he was a kid, it should be emotional.
