    It's a shame no one's ever heard the full version of this track. Right around 1:13 the entire orchestra is drowned out by the sound of John Williams's Ascension to Godhood.

    I feel like this is one of most underrated songs in all of John William's music, almost no one knows it by name or even really remembers it when you say "that song when luke and vader fight in ROTJ" but it's one of William's most powerful, beautiful, and sad scores to date. (i hope it gets used again - or remade - in the new trilogy)

      I saw it Friday, but I don't remember it being used. Weird, I'm planning on seeing it again (because it was really good, if a bit too much like A New Hope) maybe then I'll hear it.
      P.S. I think you can send a private comment before you send it to me so if you want to remind me of what scene it was in without spoiling it for others that would be cool too. :)

    The segment between 1:13 and 1:45 has to be some of the most beautifully elegant, serene but also haunting music you're ever likely to hear in a film soundtrack. It's just stunning and adds heaps of emotion to this scene in ROTJ.

    a lot of people don't know just how close Luke was to turning when he lashed out at Vader

    • @Kenshiro3rd
      @Kenshiro3rd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Yup... Luke was channeling the dark side when he lashed out at & defeated Vader channeling his pure fear for his sister to give him the strength to stop his father at all costs. Then as Luke was about to kill the man he came to save, he realized what he had done, and what he was about to do, and was horrified with himself. So to make up for it, he entrusted his life to his father, in one last gamble. He toss away his saber rejecting fighting & the dark side entirely, knowing that the Emperor would kill him for it. His only hope was that the last bit of good left in his father would compel his father to save his son... which is EXACTLY what he did. Luke had gambled on it knowing it was not only the only way to save himself, but his father as well.

Yeah I know, the acting was kinda bland but I really enjoyed the fights, music, and emotion expressed in that one specifically. It also gave me chills when Obiwan just cut Anakin in half kinda like he did Darth Maul and just left him there to rot and burn on Mustafar.

      I still think Battle of the heroes isn't as emotional as this, but not as epic as BotH. It shows Anakins turn to the dark side. This one shows Vaders redemption

    You have "The Final Duel" for the last duel score in the OT.
    You have "Battle of the Heroes" in the prequels for the last duel score.
    They better do good in the new trilogy to beat those two...

    What's great about SW and Lukes character is how human he was, he fail a lot ( in hoth, dagoba, cloud city) Even in his final duel he got pretty close into the dark side yet he was also pretty consious, and did realize how he f up

    IMO of all SW themes, this is probably Williams' greatest achievment, as he managed to make this theme after 3 episodes yet it definately contains all the epicness of the saga, including EPI-III. This 30 seconds are a musical masterpiece. If only the quality of the duel could reach such heights...

      @@d.w.v.3553 the construction of the Vader suit should not be so epic or emotional. It's more sinister, to show that now, his suit will act as a repressor, that will torture Anakin's physical being for as long as he lives, and which will keep him in anger which builds up unto this point

    • @billrock950

    "...So be it...*Jedi*..." Luke, you should never, *ever* put down your lightsaber!

  • @darkprose
    @darkprose 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The literal action we see on screen is a direct and plain lightsaber duel between an old man and his son. But we are also hearing this music. So, what we _feel_ is a cosmic struggle where the fate of the Force itself will be decided. Though we don’t see them, you feel the great Jedi masters now one with the living Force, waiting along with us to see if Anakin might finally return, destroy the Sith and free the galaxy-and the Force-from their all-devouring darkness...
    At least, that’s what I feel. That’s what a cosmic struggle between light and dark, past and present, father and son, this is what that sounds like. No one can express so precisely-effectively-what a scene should _feel like_ the way John Williams can.

    But it does. The duel is so emotional, especially the part where this music is playing (That 30 second chapter you're referencing to). That's just pure emotion and is probably the greatest duel in the whole saga.

    They were gonna make it blue and make the hilt a mix of Kenobi's and Anakin's, but because the first Lightsaber fight took place in daylight with a blue sky, they had trouble rotoscoping it to that shade of blue. So they made it green.

    The thing is, that section was basically the culmination of the story that all 6 movies were creating, so it's supposed to be a very deep and emotional Star Wars moment. The music selection only emphasizes that quality.

    1:13 A final confrontation, letting all of your anger and passion be released at once. Overcoming the fear of death and attempting to triumph the evil that terrors you.
    1:47 But one is to overcome the other, awaiting someone to become blind of their triumph. And to be taken up by some other force that begs to do more evil than good.

  • @metroidfighter90

    1:13 sounds so sad and is so because up til now Luke had been trying to save his father and had refused to give up on him. However, when Vader threatened to go after Leia instead it was at that point Luke gave up on his father. That's why this theme is so sad. Vader does eventually redeem himself in the end though.
