Hello Sir. After setting the timing marks etc to TDC is it compulsory to reset and adjust with timing light? I'm under the impression the car performs best when on TDC but heard about setting it with the timing light afew degrees before TDC. Is this correct and plz inform how to measure the degrees using timing light. Thanks
Yeah it may perform better when distributor rotor points to the TDC mark, but engine will run a little hotter,(and ping) and that affects other things like fuel economy etc etc,so always best if you can use a timing light....and set it' to 6 degrees before TDC ,so that engine operates at it's optimum.Using the timing light is easy,as it gives you different options of degrees ,..so just set to 6degrees.
Hi PJ hope you well I notice on your carb not all your hoses is connected is there a reason for that as i would like to see more on this matter and this reason specially on your plunger on the left and would like to see how your vacuum pipe is connected at the back as there is 3 nipples at the back and not sure on which one it must go. And the the pipe from your brake booster is also blocked of where mine is not please explain to me the reasons as my golf is really heavy on petrol it's a 1800 mk1 automatic
Hi. That component (plunger, as u called it) is blocked off as it serves no purpose on engines without aircon.... And the little ports on my brake booster pipe has always been blocked off, I just made those little rubber hose fittings for a better seal.... With regard to 3 nippels at back of carb as you mentioned... I only have one nipple at back, and that connects to the Vacuum Advance on the distributor... If you have nipples that are not serving any purpose, you must seal it off, as it will affect the running of your engine.. I'm assuming you don't have the original carb(Keihin Ks2)... Because there is only one nipple at back of carb as I mentioned..

My jetta 2 1.8 1989 1.8 carburetor has a flat spot have been struggling to set it trying the advance on distributor nothing my flat spot is when accelerate pedal or at the carburetor then instead of refs picking up the carb sucks in air an it wants to die before ref starts picking up
Hi ,you could look at things like your vacuum advance,.the diaphragm may be torn ,and could give you that flat spot effect. Also check base plate and servo pipe for vacuum leak.and also if your ignition timing is not properly set.
Hi man what is the cause of feul on my city golf air filter
Hi ,first time I heard about fuel on air filter ..are you sure it's not oil?...
How can i save fuel to my polo classic? Thankyou
Can you maby tel me hou to tuning a nissan 1400 carb hou mennie turns must i turn the fuel air schroe out please
It would work on the same principle as the Mk1 carb.Turn the fuel screw out slowly, and you will hear the engine idle smoothly ..then you adjust idle speed
@@pjs-golfmk1-diy thank you very much now a nother thing how doe i seal the carb on the bottom between the manifold end th carb because it is a 1400 carb on a 1600 mazda rustler a modification
Great Info Video .. Thanks Boet, this video helped me :)

Hi PJ, when will you be able to make a video on setting the timing with a timing light?@@pjs-golfmk1-diy
Hey how you doing my carb just eating way to much patrol my carb is a fake one from goldwagen it’s been in a year already
Thank you my car had high idling i fixied it myself
@@pjs-golfmk1-diy Hi PJ thank you very much for your feedback I do appreciate it alot. The carb that I have on my mk1 is from a golf mk2 that I got from a friend of mine I will certainly block of those pipes as see if it makes a difference to the engine. I will see if I can send you a pic of the carb and then send it thru to you. I must say your videos does help so much. I bought it really cheap so there is still plenty work on the golf to be done.
@@pjs-golfmk1-diy Hi. When I blank off that brake booster pipes my car barely idles. I have to leave the right side one open for the car to Idle normally. Any advice?
I have the original mk1 carb.
Is yours presently connected to behind the booster..Not all mk1 models are blanked off.

What does turning the fuel screw in actually do does it allow more fuel into the carburetor or less because mines is over fueling and my screw is all the way in and three turns out only
Hi .turning the screw in will decrease fuel ,and turning out will increase it..... generaly the approximate setting is 2 and a half turns out.....also check on the actual screw if the tip is not worn or damaged ..and if the o ring is fine.....if not ,replace the screw.it comes with the carb kit...
@@pjs-golfmk1-diy I bought a new carburetor yesterday but still over fuels because the spark plugs are like white and brown on top also new base plate
I’m three turns out from right inside on the fuel screw so must I now close it like mybe two and a half turns out
@@sumennaik298 if you 3 and half turns out. Then turn it in 1 turn and see how it responds.
@@sumennaik298 if it's over fueling then your plugs will be black ...dark grey to brown is a good color on plugs
What if the smoke is coming out of the carb and exhaust area??
Sorry for the late reply. Could be oil coming through your breather pipe into Airbox...could be a Sign of worn valve stem seals or oil compression rings..

Hi got this problem when i turn the fuel screw out my car idles also up
It will ,because you making the mixture richer ,...The idea is to get it to idle as smooth as possible,as you screw out ..once you there it means the mix is right
Thereafter ,Just adjust the idle screw to get the required idle
Hi, sir my fuel gauge on the dashboard doesn't reflect the quantity of the fuel on the car if i put R200 the red line on the side of the gauge shows me about R50,or R100 so usually it doesn't go over that red line on the fuel gauge side, what can be the problem?
You need to check the fuel sender in the tank. the gauge, and it's electronic connection, is attached to that. Maybe it's stuck or it's rusted.
@@pjs-golfmk1-diy Thks you so much, i will do that.

My airsroef is 2 en half uit gedraai maar sukel biki met om kar weg te trek . As ek briek pomp back fire my kar wat kan dit wees?
Hi. It can be an airleak on your brake booster pipe, or the booster itself. Check the pipe for leaks..
What if you don't have a rev counter
I hope you can help with my question I've been looking for the answer over two years got my mk1 1.3 over two year but noticed the break servo pipe which has two nipples one is open and I've been using the car like this for two years twice I tried blocking it off and driving and the car switched off and ended up having a strong fuel smell so I just lost hope and left it open car drives fine like this but I feel my idle is very inconvenient I have to drop my idle screw very low to reduce the pinging, once I try increasing the idle screw the engine smoothens out but gets the pinging please help u seem like you know alot about these cars.
Hi.. Yes what's happening with the pinging is that the fuel mixture is too lean, have u tried richenining the fuel mix, by just turning the air fuel screw, out a half a turn at a time..
Also, is your ignition timing spot on..? Use a timing light. Very important when it comes to the 1.3 models
Ok so you suggest turn the airscrew clockwise increase the idle so the car gets smoother and fix my pinging at that idle by adding more fuel turning the fuel screw abit counter clockwise?
I have no idea how to check if it's spot on but I do fiddle with the distributor timing now and then will look into that
What about the break servo nipple being open and taking unmetered air into it?
What about idling switch?
What about it....? I discuss idle cut off valve in another video.
This video focuses on carb tuning
I find water on my intake manifold just below the carb. Where's it coming from?
There's is an o oring between the intake and cylinder head .it's probably dripping from there..

How's it I want too find out why my golf 1 is giving me a big fish bite on my number 2 gear
A tear /cut in my Spark plug lead just under the boot (of the lead) was the culprit in my experience..I tried everything, only after I pulled the coil lead out the distributor cap I seen this cut in the lead , Then I replaced it and fish bite was gone ..it's those small things that cause the biggest headache.Meanwhile we throwing money at the problem with no success..check all your leads..,coil ,rotor closely.
What must I buy too fix it
@@nirensingh7601 you cannot just but anything.Thats Wasting money. What you need to do is determine what is the cause of that fish bite ..like I said in my case it was the spark plug coil lead .That may not be the case in your situation...,but do a thorough check on your spark plug leads , distributor cap, rotor , coil....If you not sure how ,then get an experienced person to help you.

Good day can you assist me on my Golf mk2 my car die when I come to a stop and car idle bad, I replace my base plate, fuel filter, air filter, idle valve, rotor and distributor cap but stil the same can you pls help me

Hi i follow your instructions than the car is right but the next morning my rpms is very low ,when my fan or my lights are on my car my car's revs go very low please help
Hi Ashley. Turn on your headlights When u set your idling, by turning idle screw clockwise,.. It's just a case idling still too low... With the headlights on turn idling up to around 9.rpm..
Thanks for replying will definitely try tomorrow coz thats my only problem with the car thanks !
Thanks a lot
I just tried this, not sure what I did wrong but now my idle screw is all the way in and the revs don't go higher than 600 rpm
Have you checked if u have an Airleak at the base plate.. Or around Servo Pipe. Are any ports on the carb maybe open, that shud be blocked off.?
@@pjs-golfmk1-diy I replaced the base plate last week as it was cracked. The car was running fine, it was just the idle revs that were low at about 750 and I wanted to increase this. I don't suspect there to be any other problems as it was running fine, I think I just messed up the tuning somehow
....it could maybe be still too lean at idle.. Try richenining up the mixture by a half a turn or more.. And why I said check base plate is because sometimes it does leak even on a new base plate.. Check with a bit of soapy water,... Squirt it over the base plate, if the idle drops even more you found the leak,... And then just try and tighten the long bolts, and short bolts on mani, very slightly, and see if it improves... Be careful when tightening.. Very slightly OK...
My car turns off while I'm driving what can it be
Could be .. Fuel starvation,...Faulty Coil /module,.. What have you alredy checked or replaced?
