Just tuned my GR86 on ecutek and man, what a difference that makes. Whole different car. Linear torque and and the power opened up so much. My favorite modification so far. 😎💯
Honestly, I disagree with your take on the GR vs BRZ throttle tuning. I think the BRZ throttle tuning is way better than the GR86, and I say this as someone who bought a GR86. If you look at actual throttle maps from the ECU, the BRZ is much more linear. The GR is WOT at ~45% pedal travel vs ~85% for the BRZ. It makes the GR feel "peppy" when you're driving around town and giving it 20% pedal input and getting 50% throttle opening, but it makes throttle modulation more difficult and I'd prefer if it were more linear. I've learned to drive around it, but it's still an annoyance, probably my single biggest gripe with the car. If not wanting to avoid mucking up my powertrain warranty, I already would have tuned the car not for power but literally just to fix the throttle mapping. I want it to feel like a cable throttle. IMO, they both have too little throttle response for the first 5-10% of pedal travel when the car is stopped, which feels very odd. Once you get rolling, gentle throttle inputs elicit a response, but when you're dead stopped with the clutch in, you have to give it considerably more throttle than you'd expect to get a response out of the engine. It's a really weird feeling and not something I've experienced in any other car. I don't know why they made the throttle less responsive at a stop than when rolling, it makes no sense at all.
The comment about the GR86 having a more linear throttle is factually incorrect - the BRZ has a more linear throttle. Throttle mapping between the twins have been posted on the forums and has shown that the GR86 feels more responsive because torque demand by the throttle is significantly boosted at a lower accelerator position.
@@HumorDash The thing you need to ask yourself is why you would even want that in the first place? Just press the throttle pedal more in the BRZ. The BRZ having a more linear throttle means more room for adjustability when driving enthusiastically or at a track. The average person doesn't want to be aggressive or floor the accelerator, so the manufacturers all make throttle pedals that are too sensitive in the first 50% of pedal travel. Having that makes the consumer feel good that they aren't driving the car hard and gives them a "wow" factor during the test drive, but for sports cars, it's a negative.
You are correct good sir. Besides style, the biggest difference between the two cars is that the GR86 has a more immediate feel to the throttle, suspension and steering. Hello all I’m new to BRZ/GR86 platform. Cross shopping both, my goal is to track car at Limerock, Monticello Raceway, as well as New Jersey motorsport park. As well as enjoy some backroads in NYS. I’ve been lurking around forums gathering information on both. Not new to tracking cars, I’ve been tracking my FBO tuned &Trans tune e85 2011 IS-F with KWv3 coilovers, urethane bushings, new control arms along with whole host of suspension upgrades weight reduction car for 13yrs now. Looking for smaller lighter weight platform now, something different. The IS-F is staying looking to add a new stable mate for IS-F. Since BRZ & GR86 are very similar which of these two cars would be the better option? The MX-5 is also in the mix.
I've always wondered what the BRZ/GR86 would be like if they gave it a turbo, cause it's such a great chassis, you wonder what it would be like if it actually had some torque.
Speculation but fun to discuss nonetheless. It would ruin the car unless they were able to add forced induction and fix the oiling system (Porsche boxers have an oil sump built into the engine to prevent this while the GR86/BRZ doesn’t have anything besides oil pickup tube) without ruining the weight distribution. The car is currently 53/47 front/rear with an NA engine. If they turbo’d the car as it is without a major redesign, you would get maybe 280-300 BHP instead of the reported 230, and it would ruin the weight distribution. Also, they’d have to reinforce everything. The transmission, differential, axles, connecting rods in the engine, etc. Just some projections, but the car, as it is, is currently not designed for anything more than like 250 WHP and like 200 Wtq (based on experience with 1st gen GT87/BRZ ricers). Turbo-ing a car PROPERLY is not a simple bolt-on + ECU flash that these ricers make you think it is. You also need to think about marketing and demographics as well. You’re probably talking about a $45,000 car instead of a $32,000 car with these additions (it might only add about $3k in additional parts, but they also have to redesign the chassis in some way as well, so add R&D costs to it). That puts it in entry-level BMW, Audi, Lexus territory. The BRZ/GR86 is a MUCH harder sell vs high performance luxury car category than it is vs budget sports cars (Miata, Civic SI, maybe Elantra N). The Elantra N is a unicorn of sorts, but it’s also FF instead of FR, so it’s not a fair comparison from a price perspective.
Hopefully, you know that Subaru is partially owned by Toyota.... consequently, the production & sale strategy is made at the same place / headquarters. That means, NO more power will be added to BRZ/GR86 due to Lexus RC that has turbo / more power / cost more.

Hi there, in one of your older videos I noticed that your battery voltage gauge jumped in values, mine does that too (I bought a 2017 gt86 1 month ago) is that normal?
i remember hearing from an sti owner who tracked his car, that the brakes were expensive to replace (rotors i believe). I hope this is not the case for the ts. The cost of running brembos i guess
I’ve heard rumors of talk of them putting the GR Corolla 3cyl turbo in the next refreshed models of the BRZ/GR86. If that’s true it will make this car so much better. Misha Charoudin or however you spell his last name, was talking about it on his last video. The one with Gas Monkey Garage in the title.
If you’re willing to make a drive, in Las Vegas, there are 2 Subaru dealerships that do not do markups, super easy to work with and they make you feel at home there, I bought my 23 brz from them and they were great to deal with. I got mine at MSRP and they even threw in a couple extra little things including a $25 gas card with the full tank of gas and an emergency kit
Sadly I live in Eastern Europe so it's not really possible. I'm happy for you though man, hope you enjoy the car! As I see dealerships don't even have it here, and the cheapest USED model I saw was like 36k. I make like 9.5$ per hour which is considered very good here, so yeah it's not a car for the average person here.
I understand why manufacturers use the fake engine sounds, even though I don’t like it. This though, why make it sound so bad? If you take the time to develop the system, why not make it sound good?!
Not related to this video but What are you using to mount the camera for POV shot with a helmet on the track? I do see the hat clip mount link but assuming that would not work on a helmet
Nit here. Blue interior accents are nice looking - unless you want red and then it looks dumb. Kinda like the red accents on the other brzs if you wanted to get one of the blue exterior colors. Toyota made a smarter move with a neutral interior accent choice. As for the Ts package: not a fan of the bronze color to the brembos and wouldn’t spend the 2,650 for the upgrades. Buy an upper trim from Subaru or Toyota and modify if you feel you need to do so. Also don’t feel any remorse that I do not have eyesight (2022 gr86) who gives a shit? Pay attention while you’re driving….its not a GD minivan!
I notice some of the buttons are now blacked out like the climate control buttons and the traction control/ vsc. You also get blacked out mirror caps and shark fin antenna.
Assuming the 2nd gen is the same size inside as the 1st, I had no issue when I was 130kg (195cm tall), and I seem to recall the seats in the 2nd gen have a bit wider bolstering than the 1st gen, so I would think it would even be a bit better, hope that helps!

I really think that the 2022/2023 GR86's and BRZ's without the eyesight system from Subaru will hold their value more over the ones with the eyesight.
my dream in life is to be able to drive my mom in my own car
some day
Ooooo. I wish my '23 WRX had the adaptive CC. Still need 4 seats, so the BRZ will have to wait.
It's STRANGE that EyeSight doesn't auto-rev-match. The COMPUTER is controlling the throttle. It SHOULD rev-match for you on cruise.
What would you prefer overall BRZ or GR86??
when are you going to try the tesla cybertruck?
Road noise/NVH comparison between this BRZ and your Type R, with equivalent winter/winter or PS4/PS4 S tires?
The stereo camera's are a nice touch. PS4 tires are not that bad.
No spare? Is that typical for newer sports?
I cannot live with the dash lights staying on when TCS is off. That would drive me insane during an HPDE or autocross event.

Very, very cool car. If I wasn't so in love with my Miata I could sell it and my GTI and have one of these and I could get an old Radwood car again. But I still haven't found a better 'new' car than my Miata
Miata is still the answer!
@@TheTopher next time your in Nor Cal the invitation is always open to drive my mildly modified ND2 (suspension, exhaust) or my Great Falls Green GTI with a tune. Both are manuals if you're ever interested. Cheers 🤝
That’d be awesome, thanks for the offer! I need to make it out there again to film with Zygrene
How are you liking the miata and gti combo? And which gti gen do you have??
@@TTGamingTrinh sorry for the late reply. I absolutely love this combo. Both are fun to drive, and offer completely different driving experiences. My GTI is a mk7.5 SE manual and it has a few must have mods (IMHO), tune, intake and short shifter.
Kinda bummed it's called tS and not BRZ STI. 30ish years of brand cache wasted.
Also kinda bummed "tS" doesn't stand for "twin screw Supercharger". Factory boosted BRZ would be awesome.
FYI - spare is likely not to fit with the brembo's. May have to source from another vehicle
That’s a good point, you’d need a performance pack/TRD specific previous gen 17x4” spare from Toyota or Subaru
Wonder why STI never really made a combeack? Type r civic type s Integra and GR corolla are very popular!
Subaru is a much smaller company, they have to spend almost all of their money on hybridization/ electrification of the future.
To be correct, hybridization/ electrification is coming exclusively from Toyota (Toyota partially owes Subaru)@@janoskovacs11
This trim level is called "STI Sport" in Japan. Problem is no one in the US understands what "STI" means.
Did they fix the oil pan gasket degradation issue?
Hi there, in one of your older videos I noticed that your battery voltage gauge jumped in values, mine does that too (I bought a 2017 gt86 1 month ago) is that normal?
would be really impressed if you could do one of an skoda felicia pickup
Ordered a new Brz ticked the new spoiler but I can’t find a picture of the spoiler on the car have you ever seen one?
Waiting for your review on the WRX TR
you've picked the right day to bring us around town. at least the sun was out
my AT 23BRZ (japan) has that little mobile "cubbie" where you wished all brz models had it. some do 😊 (AT be do)
We're diminished as car enthusiasts for Mazda not giving us a PROPER Mazdaspeed ND Miata and Subaru not giving us a PROPER STi BRZ.
Why is there such a long delay between the gear change on the dash?
I don’t think it has sensors for the gear, it calculates the gear based on speed and rpm, so it only shows it after clutch out.
One of my annoyances, the gear display is delayed by several seconds.
If i get one like i will get one this year or next.
Welp time to get one coming soon
i remember hearing from an sti owner who tracked his car, that the brakes were expensive to replace (rotors i believe). I hope this is not the case for the ts. The cost of running brembos i guess
a pair of Brembo rotors for an '04 STI can be had for $216 online.
I’ve heard rumors of talk of them putting the GR Corolla 3cyl turbo in the next refreshed models of the BRZ/GR86. If that’s true it will make this car so much better. Misha Charoudin or however you spell his last name, was talking about it on his last video. The one with Gas Monkey Garage in the title.
cheapest 2022 regular USED BRZ is 36000$ where I live... Insane. I've given up on ever buying a fun new car...
Do you have a video coming for the 2024 GR86?
Hey topher, is it worth buying the 1st gen BRZ's? How was you experience with them?
Absolutely! You have to rev them out a little more to get into the powerband but they’re a really fun and practical option.
@@TheTopherThey also don't have the oil starvation issues like the FA24.
aw man at 36 i might as well get a beamer /: hope subaru lowers the price in the future!!! lovely car though.
Yeah there's nothing linear about the GR86 throttle mapping.
My dream car. If i cant afford GT3 RS :d
I understand why manufacturers use the fake engine sounds, even though I don’t like it. This though, why make it sound so bad? If you take the time to develop the system, why not make it sound good?!
I have no idea why they make it sound so terrible. Must not have enough development time/funds to refine it. Honda civic too!
Just take two minutes and disconnect it.
Are Savagegeese and Duck Demuro cousins? 6:45 😊
Not related to this video but What are you using to mount the camera for POV shot with a helmet on the track? I do see the hat clip mount link but assuming that would not work on a helmet
Go pro j hook mount and a couple extensions right on the forehead area of the helmet does the trick 👍
$36k for 220hp…I love the car but that’s crazy. Brembo markup 😂
still has the interior buzz from the fake engine sound speaker.
So annoying!
@@TheTopher is there any way to turn it off?
@@janoskovacs11very easy to unplug it.
Dam. Fa24 out here doing smiles per gallons NA and boosted. 😮
i wish the infotainment was more updated
Do you hear the humming noise around 4k-6k rpm?
It could be the fake sounds that are built in
Bro try to cover different roads for drive pov
I wish the BRZ had at least three hundred plus horsepower.
I just wish it didn't cost so much in europe due to this damned regulations. Around 60k used here is france
The Subaru eyesight is actually exceptionally nice.
Is not. Shit is annoying
That grey SUV, keeps messing with you.
All the best
How defeatable is the Eyesight stuff? Can you permanently disable all of it?
The Auto braking defaults to on every time you start the car, I believe you can turn the lane departure off though.
If you don’t feel like turning it off everytime, then you can just put a piece of tape over the camera. It is next to your rearview mirror.
I notice some of the buttons are now blacked out like the climate control buttons and the traction control/ vsc.
You also get blacked out mirror caps and shark fin antenna.
How is this car for chubbier people? I would like to try it out but I am worried I will be too cramped
Assuming the 2nd gen is the same size inside as the 1st, I had no issue when I was 130kg (195cm tall), and I seem to recall the seats in the 2nd gen have a bit wider bolstering than the 1st gen, so I would think it would even be a bit better, hope that helps!
You could workout and lose weight to be able to fit in it nicely. Not only do you get what you want. But you’ll be healthier and feel better
Compare to Cayman ?
Gun to head and you have a practical second car. This or Miata?
So violent
man I wish they'd get rid of that hideous engine noise. These engines sound decent on their own, no need for it (and the WRX doesn't have it at all).
Two minutes to disconnect and problem solved.
