We are lucky to still be able to purchase cheap light rwd 2 door cars. Thank you Mazda, Toyota, and Subaru.
And still with a manual gearbox!

Cheap is debatable, but I get what you're saying.
@@nickzarnetske9994cheap isn’t debatable, it’s a flat out lie
Cheap?
Lol. Dave Coleman talking from the infotainment screen was a nice touch.
Like SCC magazine dave coleman?
I could listen to Dave Coleman geek out about the Miata for ages.
Yeah that was cool! It's like Dave consultations come with every Miata purchase!
I got my ND3 club a couple of months ago. I'm finding myself surprised that I don't care at all what tracks faster or what else is out there. This is as fun as driving gets, at any price.
@@dennisrainville1809 people forget the pleasure of sub 3000 lbs car. They are nimble & balanced plus you learn and work with the car to maintain speed. All the sensations are transmitted vs numbed. We can even floor the car and enjoy accelerating for more than 3 seconds. I traded an Alfa Romeo Ti for BRZ. I needed room for subwoofer but the ND2 or 3 is better sports car.
100%
Jack B58'ed too close to the sun.
He fell from a palm tree whilst looking for the best spanish bananas.
Mazda's transparency and rationale of engineering are why I've chosen the MX5 above all my other dream cars. Never mind the giggle-inducing way it drives.
Theirs also almost no cars in that price range with fuel economy, driving experience, and aftermarket support at that level. Its basically the ultimate enthusiast car.
I’d also like to add that the Miata community is one of the most kind communities to be a part of. Everyone is super helpful, you’ll rarely find anyone with a big ego or wanting to show off. Overall a good bunch of folks.
basically, for me, the miata is my safe motorcycle experience.
in the olden days, when i wasn't aware of my mortality, i used to ride and slide on my 350 honda.
but the last ripped skinned leg made me give this trill up.
Exactly. I love bikes and had one when I was overseas. Miata is the closest you can get while having crumple zones and air bags.
Literally buying a miata next year because my partner and my family would much rather see me on four wheels than two, and some bigger bikes already hit the prices of a base miata, may as well.
I mean yes, but a bike at 1/3 of the price outperform the car.
It’s a different experience
Same boat. Got hit by a car a few years ago, and my family begged me to stop riding. I first got a Honda Fit, which was my intro to manual, and now I've got an NB Miata. My motorcycle passion is slowly turning into driving passion in this thing!
My father also told just like that, when he drove my MX5. Feels like safe motorcycle
I don’t even care how much power my ND has. I got it because the top goes down in three seconds with just one hand. 😎
same here
Like a boob tube. 🙂
That top is so slick as long as you have some shoulder mobility.
Basically the most accessible track toy vs the most practical enthusiast car. Great video as always.
Best stated comment here.
As someone who has a 2019 ND2 RF Club and a 2024 ND3 RF Club on factory order this video hits home at the perfect time.
Congrats!!
I also ordered a 24 ND3 RF Club. Absolutely love it (except for going back in at 800 miles for cracked AC pipe).
@@tailsneon556 that’s epic!
@@JustinHEMI05 they still have the cracked AC charge pipe issue on the newer ones? ah man.
I'm buying the RF Miata, the car will live outside so that's why I'm choosing the RF over the soft top. Thank you savagegeeese for helping me decide!!! Love you guys!
You'll love it. I had a 2019 RF and I sold it last year due to family changes. I love the RF. The look, the security of the hard top, all of it. I really miss it! Saving for another one now.
You won’t regret it!
@@grazamatazI’m on RF #2 now. Had an ND1 RF then went to M2 Comp then right back to ND2 RF!

@@tinhinnh it’s great to have opinions!
I love the technical details from Mazda. They really clearly know what they are trying to build for and find ways to achieve that within a limited budget.
I love how car companies much bigger than Mazda are like “we can’t afford to develop a low volume sports car.” Meanwhile, Mazda is giving us this special thing on budget.
@@kc510 tbh I think part of why Mazda has been putting out great products is that they have nailed working around a tighter budget and scope vs the bigger brands.
“Limitations breed creativity” and all that.
And it's a better looking car!
Big thank you to Dave Coleman for being so transparent and clear on the chassis engineering changes for the ND3.
I agree with Mark. These cars are nice enough, but c'mon, it's 2024. Where's the track comparison of the true drivers' cars, the $100,000, 6000-lb crossover EVs?
I'm with you on that! The world needs yet more 800 HP 6,000 pound monsters! I mean, sure, the 104,000 miles on my 2016 Miata notwithstanding, what I've really wanted for all those years is a vehicle that weighs three times as much and shreds tires in a few thousand miles. Get out of my way peasants!

That subtle "running in the 90s" song playing in the car is a nice touch.

Sweet, a break from the mediocre crossovers. Love all the reviews regardless
Some days start not so great. Today is not one of those days.
When I think STI, the first thing we think of is the STI start button and gauge cover. Those things are synonymous with the STI brand, and my 4 stacks are sitting idle in my account ready to pounce at any moment.
Yeah, man, a badge in a DIGITAL gauge cluster is what I really want.
Always great to hear from Dave Coleman, who is so forthcoming on Mazda’s thought process. Well done, Mark and Jack, from an NC1 Sport owner (2006).
Coleman might be the most effective PR guy right now working for any automaker that sells in the US.
I had a 2023 M2 (among other cars). It was fat, powerful, isolated. I could not reach the limit on the roads I drive, safely or legally, and I don't track. I now have a 2024 ND3 Miata. It's everything I was looking for in a twisty road car. Long Live Miata!

Bought a BRZ last year, love it to death. If I didn't need fold-down rear seats, I'd have a soft-top ND. Both such amazing cars.
Tough choice. But you win either way!
I’m also a future BRZ limited owner. I think every BRZ/86 owners deep down would rather have an ND Miata if practicality was no issue, it’s more pure, less weight, more fun period.

That's a sweet car.
Dave Coleman!??! THE Dave Coleman who got me down the Nissan S-chassis rabbit hole almost 20-years ago!?! I won't be convinced to get a Miata, but I'm glad to see he's still tweaking imports.
Picking up my ND3 MX5 in 2 weeks. Cannot wait!!!.
The mx5 has transcended Mazda, now is basically a Lotus
Except Lotus's are 800lbs heavier than Miatas
The original Lotus Elan was clearly the influence for the MX-5
God i love the spec tire comparisons! Thanks again bridgestone!

Thanks for giving the Miata the respect it deserves.
Did Subaru ever fix the oil starvation problem?
i adore my ND3 st so far :) 2500 miles in the last 6 weeks!
As a former owner of an ND miata thank you for keeping the love of these types of cars alive. It's highly appreciated.
Love my ND2 as my only car, although I’m lucky to have friends and family who can help out if I need more space. I like the GR86 but the Miata feels so much more special to me.
Great video, information, and graphics you used, and of course getting to hear more of Dave Coleman! thanks guys!!
A superb video. It's hard to believe that so much information could be conveyed in 35 minutes. Having two separate interviews added to the breadth of coverage, without compromising your goal to deep dive into the latest version of each car.
Is there such a thing as elevating two Facebook motor heads to the status of national treasures? You're on my shortlist... heck, you ARE my shortlist.
Thank you!
Great video. Love the interview with the engineer, the ‘in the shop’ deep dives, and lap times. Your channel is second to none.
Love my ND2 RF. Totally agree it needed new springs and shocks, but that took a weekend in my garage to install and now I’m having a blast on track and backroads.
Quality watch, you really are as good as it gets without being mainstream television, thank you for your efforts.
Great comparison review guys!!! I wouldn't want either as a daily driver, but with that being said, as a 2nd car, I'm taking the Mazda (convertible) every day. Most Miatas seem to last for well over 2 decades. Extremely well designed & built. Just my preference.
Thank you for the Miata video about all the generations!
These are two of the best cars ever made, because they deliver SO MUCH for a normal car price :)
I would only ever take the GR 86, but both of these are wonderful and I am so glad they exist.
You perfectly convey the passion for cars with a sauce of maturity and unusual humor. You are the best car content I have seen in years. With love from Russia
Some time after your "already a future classic" Mazda video, I went ahead and put down a deposit on an ND3 Miata. That was in February. 3 weeks ago I took ownership of the car, have been railing it like my motorcycles, have been in and out of drive throughs and errands and it has been a great experience, everything I enjoy about motorcycles but now with an actual Isofix RECARO seat that I can take my favorite child with.
I had tested the BRZ in March, and it is a good car, but I didnt find the BRZ more practical than the MX5 is fun.
If the second row seats would have had 2 extra inches of legroom I may have been convinced to get that, but it doesnt, my kids would not fit behind me so why bother with the weight
"favorite child" 😂 love that you don't deny it

On a transmission related note: i changed into 2nd instead of 4th from 6th twice on my first trip outside of town. It seems i pulled the knob too hard in my direction. I will definitely ruin it if that keeps happening.
Do you track your car?
Great points
Love the video. I like seeing the high end cars, but realistically - 99% of the audience will never experience one. Genuinely find myself more inclined to watch more realistic reviews and comparisons of cars the general public might actually be able to attain. Great work guys, keep it up!
Agreed. At this point even regular cars are pretty much unobtainable so I have even less desire to watch video after video of high end vehicles. Savage Geese and Throttle House are my go to creators. But I do find myself watching less and less as the days go on.

I use my 2023 Miata everyday and storage is not an issue. There is space on the side of seats on the floor that act as cubbies. The new 2024 infotainment screen looks real nice.
I always love looking at the radio console and see what songs are select in the shots and they are always fun and on point. :o)
I LOVED my 2001 six-speed Miata. It was slow-ish, 2nd slowest car I've ever owned, but man, it was right up there with my CRX Si back in the day as far as being fun! I bought it for my wife to learn how to drive a manual, she learned, then she felt "unsafe" in it because it's so small, so I took it over. Unfortunately, it sat in the garage a lot as we both needed more car for day to day stuff, and the Miata was a 5th car. I sold it after it sat for nearly 4 years at our Az home in 2023 with only 72,000 on the clock. It went to an enthusiast who knew every nut and bolt and he didn't flinch at our price. I've kept in contact with him, and he loves it.
Great review, guys. I am so glad you two have dedicated your lives to this and are so focused on having fun!
Lmao at the Initial D sound track that pop up during the Miata intro
Love the Mazda engineer video framed in the Mazda infotainment screen! Brilliant! :-)
I have a 2017 MX5 RF with some modifications. The driver-centric design and overall fun-to-drive aspect is what guided me to trade in my motorcycle and coupe. I was never going to max out the speed on the motorcycle and street driving the MX-5 is a joy. I do not need the top speed of a 'vette or Porche but enjoy cornering and acceleration (like I did with the bike) of the RF. A quick recovery to Jack and keep up the content - I enjoy your work.
No-one at my local track looks down on my Miata. I'm surrounded by guys who:
- Turbo'd a Miata without upgrading the brakes or tyres and went straight into the gravel trap
- Juiced 500hp out of a GTI but gets fuel starvation going up the hill
- Modified an already powerful 6cyl car and now can't complete three laps without overheating NOR drive it on the street any more
- Has to alternate hot laps and cooldown laps in his modified Evo
and so on, and I'm just out there ripping every session with basic handling upgrades and minimal running costs. I think they're mostly jealous.
I remember Dave Colman in his days in Sport Compact Car Magazine, there's even a term he coined called the Dave Point in which the point where the steering axis hits the ground. One of my most favorite articles was a Nissan Sentra SE-R from a fan was stripped with parts cut out to make it as fast and light as possible. Another one is a dual twin turbo engine Hyundai Tiburon where it made the most confusing burnout. Front engine in reverse while the rear engine is drive. Incredible quarter mile time with barely a tire chirp out of it.. Awesome times back in the early 2000s!
You guys are the best in the business. Masterful comparison of the technical and emotional driving experiences of these two cars.
Really great video guys!
These are great cars, thsnks for reviewing them.
Bought an ND3 Club softtop last weekend and it's lived up to the Miata reputation. And my last fun car was an Ariel Atom spec racer! Can't wait to finish breaking in the Miata and taking it on track.
Can’t go wrong with either, both excel in the corners and are great platforms to improve driving on the tracks
I sold my GR86 for ND3 and I can't be happier!
No rev hang, better gearbox and steering feel, no blowing the engine, better sound, less weight, topdown fun, and much better gas mileage!👍🏻

Monster power, monster grip heavy cars with sophisticated algorithmic software chassis controls which only shine for a few seconds on the track are the future.

I just bought my first 24' ND Miata in early June. I current live in Canada, where a warm sunny summer feels like a luxury.
I have not been driving my regular daily for 2 months now.
Everyone told me not to drive it in the winter, but I have decided to get a set of winter tires.
I love my ND2 soft top. I live in NH where we’ve got fantastic backroads and the Miata is a joy through the white mountains
Some much more interesting than another 911 review. Thank you!
As I've gotten older, I've really come to appreciate Miatas and its ethos. Everything is so fast now that fast has lost some excitement/novelty. It's now about experience, not just speed. But being 5'11", all torso, I just don't fit in them. Like Jack, it's just hunched over discomfort. So thank god that the BRZ/86 exist for us disproportionate folks.
I'm 6'3" and fit in the Miata. Not well mind you, but it seems a stretch that you can't fit. The biggest issue with me is that the shifter feels to close, pushing my elbow way back.
I had a 2020 Miata previously that I sold in 2022 to buy a '22 Camaro 2SS 1LE, as I'd never had a V8 and wanted to get one before regulations got rid of them forever. I really loved it, but I found myself missing the lightweight nature of the Miata. Was deciding between a GR86/BRZ and another Miata and ended up going back to the Miata this year. I don't need any practicality (my wife and I have 3 other cars), and just wanted something purely fun to drive. Placed an order back in January and picked up a '24 MX-5 Club soft top back in May. Love this car, and as a purely fun car, it might be my favorite of all the ones I've owned.
Wow! The 2ss 1LE is suppose to be a great handling car. How is the miata in cruising on the highway? Do you get road fatigue?
@@Platos-Den It is a great handling car, and I would have kept both if I had the money and space. I just found I preferred the lightweight feeling of the Miata (no matter how good the handling, the Camaro always felt big).
I haven't really had the Miata on the highway, as I try to actively avoid them when I drive. The most time I've spent in the Miata is about a two hour stretch, and I didn't find it fatiguing at all. I have the trim with the Recaro seats if that makes any difference.
Ive been dailying a 22 gr86 for a long time now and dont plan on making a change anytime soon. If i had a 2 car solution in 5 years, I might be looking at an R2 or R3X with a modified 86 winning out over the miata because of styling at the end of the day
I'm so glad Dave spoke about the on-center stickiness of the pre-ND3 steering (12:26). I feel it in my ND2 at highway speeds and feared it was some kind of defect. While I don't love it, I'm at least relieved to know that's just how the car feels from the factory.
I actually felt that the NC also had sticky on center feel.
The new Carrera literally ate Silverback Jack’s right foot! Oh, and this comparison video was good too.
Great video.
It's the MX-5 soft top for me. I owned a 1968 MGB back in the 1970's and I will always crave the feel of a classic open top British roadster with just enough modern tech to resolve the lacking issues that the 60's MGB's suffered from.
I had so sell my GR86 (edit: I meant GT86) to get a car that we needed for family. It has been two years and I still miss it ...

Be honest Jack. You gave yourself a stress fracture pushing that 911 throttle through the floor.🤣
These two make me miss the midwest when I'm away. I wish more people were nerds like this
I used a 1991 1.6L Miata as my daily driver back when I was in my mid-20's. I bought it used when it was 6 years old. I got other cars later but ended up keeping that car for 12 years and never had anything major go wrong, I think I only replaced the top (eventually) and a power window switch. Granted, I lived in California at that time (I now live in the Midwest so winters are an issue) and the road wasn't full of oversized SUVs driven by people on their cell phones. I used that car for everything for about 3 years and smiled every mile. I keep thinking that if I ever retire or live in a warmer climate, I'll use one as a daily again. If my wife keeps her small SUV I don't really need two cars to carry everything.
I've had a 2013 FRS and previously owned an NC PRHT both of which were my daily driver. I'd buy a GR86 over an ND today just for the back seat and storage. Given the skyrocketing Porsche prices I'm really hoping that rumors of a hybrid 300hp GR86 happen.
The best part of the ND is the RF is a mini pre 1977 C3 Corvette design wise.
Mazda, Toyota, and Subaru are the 3 car companies that I will consider buying my next car from.
You should probably strike Subaru off that list.

@@aygwm true if reliability is a priority. But they are hard to beat for utility.
Ignore these ding songs.
Subarus are not as reliable as Toyotas. 100% true. They are maybe 0.2-0.6% less reliable overall. If they make a car you want, buy it.
Ignore these clowns talking crap out of their ass. Subaru makes longitudinally aligned cars, with a lot of utility and a lot of character.
They’re generally well designed, and definitely well made. Toyota does do better, but there are compromises in buying a beige, FWD transportation appliance.

Only thing that had to go up front was the lasagna and a case of bagel chips. The trunk isn't bad, though the opening is a bit small and the glove box does take up some real estate along with the aftermarket strut bars, but it's got a reasonable size for many items, just not one large item. Carried a 40" TV in the front with the top down and the extra long reach HF jack. Only complaint with the MX5 is that the first gear seems a bit too short to me and second is uncomfortably long to take off from for everyday use. It's almost like a truck gear.
