Mazda's transparency and rationale of engineering are why I've chosen the MX5 above all my other dream cars. Never mind the giggle-inducing way it drives.
Theirs also almost no cars in that price range with fuel economy, driving experience, and aftermarket support at that level. Its basically the ultimate enthusiast car.
I’d also like to add that the Miata community is one of the most kind communities to be a part of. Everyone is super helpful, you’ll rarely find anyone with a big ego or wanting to show off. Overall a good bunch of folks.
I love the technical details from Mazda. They really clearly know what they are trying to build for and find ways to achieve that within a limited budget.
I love how car companies much bigger than Mazda are like “we can’t afford to develop a low volume sports car.” Meanwhile, Mazda is giving us this special thing on budget.
@@kc510 tbh I think part of why Mazda has been putting out great products is that they have nailed working around a tighter budget and scope vs the bigger brands. “Limitations breed creativity” and all that.
I drive my 2022 soft top Mazda MX5 GS-P (club in the USA) everyday, even in the winter! To work, grocery, Costco, and weekend back road rips - summer only for the backroad rips. Over 40,000 KMs on it so far (~25,000 miles). Love it!

I had a 2023 M2 (among other cars). It was fat, powerful, isolated. I could not reach the limit on the roads I drive, safely or legally, and I don't track. I now have a 2024 ND3 Miata. It's everything I was looking for in a twisty road car. Long Live Miata!
So I guess maybe I should not trade my 23 ND2 RF for a 2024 M2? I was thinking it might be more fun to drive especially with the manual. You’re making a valid point and you’re right about reaching the limits for a Miata and trying to enjoy the M2 without getting caught for speeding. I love driving my manual Miata but the M2 is larger and safer and more practical. Performance wise it seems like it would be fun to drive. However, the Miata is very tight inside and seems better as more of a weekend car. Don’t you think the M2 is more functional as a daily and more comfortable overall as your only car? I want a fun to drive car as a daily and the Miata seems too small and UNSAFE? I wish it was about the size of a Boxster but the same price! The Mustang is nice but too heavy and large. Handling not speed is my main interest. Plus I want a manual.
@@rembo183 if it's your only car no question M2 is better for a daily. You're just going to be disappointed. It's not fun driven slow and it's isolated.
I purchased a brand new Miata ND3 sport soft top (in soul red like the one in this video 😁) back in June and it’s my first ever sports car and I daily it. It’s my one and only car actually and while I have learned to live with the compromises in storage and space I cannot stress how much I adore this car. The best part of my day is driving to work and driving home and I do not get tired of this thing. My favorite thing to do is drive and this car gives me everything and more than I could have ever wanted in a fun car. As much as I loved my old car I do not miss my old 07 Mercedes E class that was faster, more luxurious, more comfortable, and waaaaaaay more practical.
You perfectly convey the passion for cars with a sauce of maturity and unusual humor. You are the best car content I have seen in years. With love from Russia
Love my ND2 RF. Totally agree it needed new springs and shocks, but that took a weekend in my garage to install and now I’m having a blast on track and backroads.
Well said. Have slightly over 1100 miles on my new '24 GT. I'm old as dirt, first car was a '62 3000 big Healey. This soul red little jewel is an end to my everything I'd ever dreamed of in a "fun to drive", because I just like to drive car. I love it dearly....my wife does too.
I LOVED my 2001 six-speed Miata. It was slow-ish, 2nd slowest car I've ever owned, but man, it was right up there with my CRX Si back in the day as far as being fun! I bought it for my wife to learn how to drive a manual, she learned, then she felt "unsafe" in it because it's so small, so I took it over. Unfortunately, it sat in the garage a lot as we both needed more car for day to day stuff, and the Miata was a 5th car. I sold it after it sat for nearly 4 years at our Az home in 2023 with only 72,000 on the clock. It went to an enthusiast who knew every nut and bolt and he didn't flinch at our price. I've kept in contact with him, and he loves it. Great review, guys. I am so glad you two have dedicated your lives to this and are so focused on having fun!
Love my ND2 as my only car, although I’m lucky to have friends and family who can help out if I need more space. I like the GR86 but the Miata feels so much more special to me.
Dave Coleman!??! THE Dave Coleman who got me down the Nissan S-chassis rabbit hole almost 20-years ago!?! I won't be convinced to get a Miata, but I'm glad to see he's still tweaking imports.
A superb video. It's hard to believe that so much information could be conveyed in 35 minutes. Having two separate interviews added to the breadth of coverage, without compromising your goal to deep dive into the latest version of each car. Is there such a thing as elevating two Facebook motor heads to the status of national treasures? You're on my shortlist... heck, you ARE my shortlist. Thank you!
I use my 2023 Miata everyday and storage is not an issue. There is space on the side of seats on the floor that act as cubbies. The new 2024 infotainment screen looks real nice.
Love the segment with Dave, being able to hear and understand all the technical changes and their goals for how the car feels/handles. Awesome to nerd out on, again SG is the only review channel to get that deep behind the scenes insight and info directly from the source, greatly appreciated guys!
Love the video. I like seeing the high end cars, but realistically - 99% of the audience will never experience one. Genuinely find myself more inclined to watch more realistic reviews and comparisons of cars the general public might actually be able to attain. Great work guys, keep it up!
Agreed. At this point even regular cars are pretty much unobtainable so I have even less desire to watch video after video of high end vehicles. Savage Geese and Throttle House are my go to creators. But I do find myself watching less and less as the days go on.
Bought an ND3 Club softtop last weekend and it's lived up to the Miata reputation. And my last fun car was an Ariel Atom spec racer! Can't wait to finish breaking in the Miata and taking it on track.
The ND Miata is a masterpiece.. such an icon already.. i love this car and I love the small but effective improvements they made on this ND3 (I own an ND2), except for the fake air vents in the front bumper instead of that 1st and 2nd gen cute DRL. Cheers
Some time after your "already a future classic" Mazda video, I went ahead and put down a deposit on an ND3 Miata. That was in February. 3 weeks ago I took ownership of the car, have been railing it like my motorcycles, have been in and out of drive throughs and errands and it has been a great experience, everything I enjoy about motorcycles but now with an actual Isofix RECARO seat that I can take my favorite child with. I had tested the BRZ in March, and it is a good car, but I didnt find the BRZ more practical than the MX5 is fun. If the second row seats would have had 2 extra inches of legroom I may have been convinced to get that, but it doesnt, my kids would not fit behind me so why bother with the weight
just be aware to not rail third or fourth gear too hard or you will need to replace two transmissions in a year like me :) , FYI mine is a 2023, idk why the trans is still so fragile
@@jameschan5128 thanks for the tip! I do try to pay attention with the shifts but my rev matching is shit right now. I will definitely ruin it if that keeps happening. Do you track your car?
Great comparison review guys!!! I wouldn't want either as a daily driver, but with that being said, as a 2nd car, I'm taking the Mazda (convertible) every day. Most Miatas seem to last for well over 2 decades. Extremely well designed & built. Just my preference.
The sincerity in these gentlemen's' voices is profound! Such transparent and honest reviews. I am contemplating on selling my C4S and getting into a BRZ TS and this is the review I was looking for. Great job, as always.
These are two of the best cars ever made, because they deliver SO MUCH for a normal car price :) I would only ever take the GR 86, but both of these are wonderful and I am so glad they exist.
If this type of car appeals to you, buy one now while you still can and drive the nuts off of it. Cars that make you smile are a dying breed. Monster power, monster grip heavy cars with sophisticated algorithmic software chassis controls which only shine for a few seconds on the track are the future.
I’m an nd2 owner and I absolutely love it. I used a seat caddie on the passenger side between the center console it gives me 2 cup holders (full size) and a place for my phone and keys .
I remember Dave Colman in his days in Sport Compact Car Magazine, there's even a term he coined called the Dave Point in which the point where the steering axis hits the ground. One of my most favorite articles was a Nissan Sentra SE-R from a fan was stripped with parts cut out to make it as fast and light as possible. Another one is a dual twin turbo engine Hyundai Tiburon where it made the most confusing burnout. Front engine in reverse while the rear engine is drive. Incredible quarter mile time with barely a tire chirp out of it.. Awesome times back in the early 2000s!
@@Online_ToughGuy how many people actually experince much greater rate of escaping danger with more power? id say its pretty rare even among sports car drivers at the track
I had a 2020 Miata previously that I sold in 2022 to buy a '22 Camaro 2SS 1LE, as I'd never had a V8 and wanted to get one before regulations got rid of them forever. I really loved it, but I found myself missing the lightweight nature of the Miata. Was deciding between a GR86/BRZ and another Miata and ended up going back to the Miata this year. I don't need any practicality (my wife and I have 3 other cars), and just wanted something purely fun to drive. Placed an order back in January and picked up a '24 MX-5 Club soft top back in May. Love this car, and as a purely fun car, it might be my favorite of all the ones I've owned.
@@Platos-Den It is a great handling car, and I would have kept both if I had the money and space. I just found I preferred the lightweight feeling of the Miata (no matter how good the handling, the Camaro always felt big). I haven't really had the Miata on the highway, as I try to actively avoid them when I drive. The most time I've spent in the Miata is about a two hour stretch, and I didn't find it fatiguing at all. I have the trim with the Recaro seats if that makes any difference.
Sounds like my days when I went from a STOCK rx8, and then traded for an STi... Huge mistake, ended up throwing $10k at the Subaru to make it insane fast and stiff. RX8 was the better car, and I assume the ND3 would be similar.

I'm already at my third Miata, had a 98 NB a 2016 ND sport and now a 2021 ND2 sport, it just makes life and driving much more enjoyable and easy, the open top aspect is just the cherry on top
I have a 2017 MX5 RF with some modifications. The driver-centric design and overall fun-to-drive aspect is what guided me to trade in my motorcycle and coupe. I was never going to max out the speed on the motorcycle and street driving the MX-5 is a joy. I do not need the top speed of a 'vette or Porche but enjoy cornering and acceleration (like I did with the bike) of the RF. A quick recovery to Jack and keep up the content - I enjoy your work.
No-one at my local track looks down on my Miata. I'm surrounded by guys who: - Turbo'd a Miata without upgrading the brakes or tyres and went straight into the gravel trap - Juiced 500hp out of a GTI but gets fuel starvation going up the hill - Modified an already powerful 6cyl car and now can't complete three laps without overheating NOR drive it on the street any more - Has to alternate hot laps and cooldown laps in his modified Evo and so on, and I'm just out there ripping every session with basic handling upgrades and minimal running costs. I think they're mostly jealous.
Ignore these ding songs. Subarus are not as reliable as Toyotas. 100% true. They are maybe 0.2-0.6% less reliable overall. If they make a car you want, buy it. Ignore these clowns talking crap out of their ass. Subaru makes longitudinally aligned cars, with a lot of utility and a lot of character. They’re generally well designed, and definitely well made. Toyota does do better, but there are compromises in buying a beige, FWD transportation appliance. Don’t listen to idiots. Choose a reputable brand - which you’ve already done - and buy what you want.

As I've gotten older, I've really come to appreciate Miatas and its ethos. Everything is so fast now that fast has lost some excitement/novelty. It's now about experience, not just speed. But being 5'11", all torso, I just don't fit in them. Like Jack, it's just hunched over discomfort. So thank god that the BRZ/86 exist for us disproportionate folks.
I'm 6'3" and fit in the Miata. Not well mind you, but it seems a stretch that you can't fit. The biggest issue with me is that the shifter feels to close, pushing my elbow way back.
Just fit 2 35 packs of Coke, 16 oz Arizona variety pack, 2x 2 lb bags of coffee, 6x romaine, a case of oat milk, 3x shampoos and conditioners, grape tomatoes, 2 lasganas, tzatziki dip, bacon, 3lbs of limes, honey, naan and cucumbers. Only thing that had to go up front was the lasagna and a case of bagel chips. The trunk isn't bad, though the opening is a bit small and the glove box does take up some real estate along with the aftermarket strut bars, but it's got a reasonable size for many items, just not one large item. Carried a 40" TV in the front with the top down and the extra long reach HF jack. Only complaint with the MX5 is that the first gear seems a bit too short to me and second is uncomfortably long to take off from for everyday use. It's almost like a truck gear. I can see why Fiat opted for the NC transmission.

@@codincoman9019 With the top down on the highway the soft top is actually quieter than the RF which can have wind buffeting issues top down at highway speeds.
@@ag4allgood Partially true - depending on the speed, the wind is buffeting more in the RF at certain frequencies - but this can be easily avoided changing the speed, causing other frequencies that are not provoking anymore the phenomenon. However, this is unimportant to me, because I do not drive with the top down at very high speeds. I bought the car to enjoy the surroundings, not to pass through them at illegal speeds. If I want to blast the car, I am going on mountainous roads or on the track - neither being an issue because you cannot attack the curves at really high speed. Actually, I do not enjoy high speed unless I am on a twisted road/track - and such speed is only perceived as very high (when nicely drifting), actually being very far from highway speed 😉 For me it is far, far more important the protection against vandals offered vs. the soft top (that can be easily destroyed by stupid or bad people - thieves included).
@@codincoman9019 The soft top has a thick metal plate going from the very front to past the back of the roll hoops. Any thief trying to cut thru will not have a quick easy entry. The side windows are were the thieves will target if they really want to get in ! Our highways have some speed limits of 70 mph. While you might not travel the highways I do & its usually open top ! 🤔
It's the MX-5 soft top for me. I owned a 1968 MGB back in the 1970's and I will always crave the feel of a classic open top British roadster with just enough modern tech to resolve the lacking issues that the 60's MGB's suffered from.
Here in Europe, the new MX-5 ND3 is soon no longer available with the "big" 2.0 and only with the base model 1.5 (132 bhp). You can still buy the few remaining 2.0 left in stock at the dealer, but it is no longer possible to order a new 2.0 from the factory. That means the MX-5 which we know and love is slowly but surely being discontinued. Perhaps there will be a new MX-5 coming soon, but with a hybrid engine of some kind to meet regulations.
@@rtmpgt I own an original 1.6 and up to 4500 rpm happens nothing at all. It behaves like any other mass production four-cylinder, but after 4500 the engine characteristics change entirly and the engine becomes eager. Coupled with the sensitive throttle response, it then pushes forward really well for its moderate power. This means that you want to stay in the high rev range at all costs and have to rev up to 7200 rpm to get the most out of it. In addition If you fit a set of ITBs, the 1.6 becomes a real old-school sports car engine. You can't get any closer to the ultimate british roadster experience.
@@andycalifornia426 you can add modifications to the ND to make it really come alive like coilovers and stiffer sway bars. If I could do it again I would add the least stiff coilovers to maintain its playful character and make it enjoyable for the street. I do want to K swap an NB Miata though!
I think many people think of themselves as driving enthusiasts but what they really want is HP or to be seen in a particular Badge/Brand. Those people will completely skip over 2 of the best driving cars on the market today at any price point. The majority of enthusiast drivers will never come close to exceeding the capabilities of these 2 gems.
I used a 1991 1.6L Miata as my daily driver back when I was in my mid-20's. I bought it used when it was 6 years old. I got other cars later but ended up keeping that car for 12 years and never had anything major go wrong, I think I only replaced the top (eventually) and a power window switch. Granted, I lived in California at that time (I now live in the Midwest so winters are an issue) and the road wasn't full of oversized SUVs driven by people on their cell phones. I used that car for everything for about 3 years and smiled every mile. I keep thinking that if I ever retire or live in a warmer climate, I'll use one as a daily again. If my wife keeps her small SUV I don't really need two cars to carry everything.
the body roll i test drove in the nd2 stock was atrocious and made me feel uneasy like I was riding a spring horse in the playground gyrating in every direction even when not being pushed. Fyi I own a 23brz. Notice on the lap times chart the previous gr86 they built with ohlins and essex brakes dropped 5 seconds in lap times which is substantial given the overall cost of the vehicle/mods and its right there with a bmw m2 which is a car double its price.

I'm so glad Dave spoke about the on-center stickiness of the pre-ND3 steering (12:26). I feel it in my ND2 at highway speeds and feared it was some kind of defect. While I don't love it, I'm at least relieved to know that's just how the car feels from the factory.
Why do reviewers always refer to this as a second or third car or a weekend car?? I use mine as my only daily car and it works great for everything I need to do. It has plenty of storage space, in fact the "glove box" (the lockable space between the two seats) in my car is usually empty. I get a week's worth of groceries in it without any issue and that's all I need it to do in terms of hauling crap. On those two or three occasions in the year when I need to haul something large I either borrow a friend's car or I rent a truck, but the other 363 days of the year the MX-5 is perfect for my needs.
Went with FM front and rear sway bars as the only suspension mod on my ‘19 ND2 RF GT. Half the body roll and still great on rough roads. Also 225 tires on 17x8 wheels. Looks much better on the car, especially from the back.
Yep if you’re doing to track your Nd you have to put in a koni or fox suspension kit from flyin Miata. The fox stage 2 makes it handle on rails on the track but ruins the fun ok back road IMO.

5 years of fun, zero issues (not even recalls), despite spirited driving (plenty of track-days included).
Is RF really quieter on highways than the soft-top? Some people say there is barely any difference.
@@khelgarironfist3301, yes, it is - this was/is one of the reasons I liked/like the RF more and I bought one. People don't know that a 3dB noise difference means the doubling of the noise.
Actually, I do not enjoy high speed unless I am on a twisted road/track - and such speed is only perceived as very high (when nicely drifting), actually being very far from highway speed 😉
For me it is far, far more important the protection against vandals offered vs. the soft top (that can be easily destroyed by stupid or bad people - thieves included).
I’d argue that in some ways the 1.5L is better. It’s truer to the original experience of the NA6

If you have a partner with an SUV the Miata can totally be your daily driver!
@@joshuaciccoricco2947 My partner has a regular sedan. We're DINKs so really an SUV isn't needed and she doesn't want one. You can borrow a truck for like $20 at home depot if you're trying to move something bigger really quick.
@@joshuaciccoricco2947 most of the people absolutely don't need SUV for a daily driver.
*me staring at the screen in the same manner, because my Miata is my only car* :D
@joshuaciccoricco2947 My partner does not even drive or have a license. I will never own an SUV.
These two make me miss the midwest when I'm away. I wish more people were nerds like this
Coleman interviews informative as usual. But can the mx5 Miata match à Prius Prime on track lap times ?
I'm so glad Dave spoke about the on-center stickiness of the pre-ND3 steering (12:26). I feel it in my ND2 at highway speeds and feared it was some kind of defect. While I don't love it, I'm at least relieved to know that's just how the car feels from the factory.
I actually felt that the NC also had sticky on center feel.
Because most people would only own it if they had another more practical car first. You are the exception and you should enjoy it!
The best part of the ND is the RF is a mini pre 1977 C3 Corvette design wise.
I hope the King crab was not hurt.....
Ok so basically don’t buy a new ND3. Just find a clean used ND2 for a discount and you’ll be just as happy.
Went with FM front and rear sway bars as the only suspension mod on my ‘19 ND2 RF GT. Half the body roll and still great on rough roads. Also 225 tires on 17x8 wheels. Looks much better on the car, especially from the back.
The body roll on an ND Miata on track is just INSANE. It's almost as if it's going to tip over.
Yep if you’re doing to track your Nd you have to put in a koni or fox suspension kit from flyin Miata. The fox stage 2 makes it handle on rails on the track but ruins the fun ok back road IMO.
@@aceofspades6667ohlins, kw, nitron are overkill on the mx5 nd. Just installed the Ohlins R&T and it is another car
Works like a charm on back roads with broken pavement
@@David_Journey actually they're slightly better than stock ones 🤣. At least that is my impression (also they absorb the impurities of the roads a little bit better)
@@David_Journey haha! Good point!
The new Carrera literally ate Silverback Jack’s right foot! Oh, and this comparison video was good too.
