One thing I like about the controversial looks, and hate for lack of STI, is that it makes the WRX underrated. I drove my friend's 23 base, and it was such a mature lovely car. It feels a bit "older" than other new cars in a good way. The powerband is so linear, I was very impressed, after driving the GR Corolla where it felt a little peaky, and jerky on and off throttle. Videos show this WRX passing the previous STI in a roll, and the engine is understressed in the VB. This car punches way above its weight, just wish it was a hatch :)
I test drove the TR and i agree with you. I dont think an STI is needed. This car is still a lot of fun to drive you have the power and best of all way more affordable!! those breaks are a game changer IMO. That car is OP on the street and looks prepped for the Track.

But when you discontinue the STi Suby I would have to guess feels forced to do more and bring the WRX closer to the STi. Not a fan of the plastic. Wheels are getting better though and brakes were a needed upgrade. Agree on the info-system super sluggish as well on our 2021 Outback. I feel as though Suby has squeezed everything out of the boxer they can and other automakers are passing them. Still iconic.
Convince me the TR isn't the development mule or Subaru trying to make some R&D back from the internal STI prototypes before the company scrapped the stillborn unit deep within Subaru or STI themselves.
I feel like for $43k a Golf R would be a much higher quality and refined buy. Not to mention more reliable, easier to modify, and make more power without giving up the reliability of the internals.
I went to a 2023 S3 from this car (Premium trim). Very much worth it, though I will say in this TR trim with the brakes and the Recaro seats, this is a great proposition. Just having a tune on this new WRX gives crazy gains and really makes the car enjoyable. That new FA24 is very under tuned from the factory.
I bought a 2024 Outback Touring XT a month ago and have a few things to note about the 11.6 Starlink display: 1) You can change the A/C button to recirculate if you want, but mine hasn't really used outside air (probably because of the heat and humidity in Central TX). 2) The screen seems to "warm up" and is usually the slowest right after startup and when i haven't opened any menus. Once CarPlay/AA are loaded, you kind of forget about it. 3) Camera quality sucks and it doesn't make much sense as to why Subaru has chosen to cheap out on it.
I went with new 2023 premium with upgraded sound system and moon roof for $32k rather than 2024. Subaru eyesight has several reported issues with hard braking when not needed. I dont see $12k in benefits on the TR compared to premium or base model. You can get a base 2023 for $29k right now, so $42k for a wrx seems nuts. If you have that $ then Civic type R or VG Golf seem hard to complete with. I'll def buy the brakes when they become available
I have a 22 premium, yap the infotainment is not good. I noticed the TR turn signal switch stays in place where mine does not. That is annoying at times. Nit pick things, overall, I neither love it or hate it. It is a daily for me that is very practical and I appreciate it for that.
Good catch! That is one of the most annoying thing back when I had my 22 wrx prem. You just push the turn signal but it reverts back to the middle. If you are changing lanes, it can be very trick and even after a couple years owning it, I still get annoyed when I hit the wrong side to signal
This video and Savagegeese's videos on the TR have convinced me that my next car after I want to move on from my black '20 WRX w/PP will be a TR. It does a better job of blending performance, fun, comfort, and year round utility than its competitors However, $43k is just too much when you consider the MSRP of a GRC Premium, the Type R, or the Golf R. In reality, though, there's no mark ups or waiting lists with WRX's, and Subaru even takes orders. I MIGHT be able to find a GRC at MSRP, I'd be lucky to get a Type R for $5k ADM, and the Golf R is impossible to find (and the 6MT is dead in '25). I'm sure I'll be able to find a TR sitting on a lot in 2025 and get it for 10% under MSRP. That's what makes the WRX the choice among its competitors. Kept stock (or close to it), these FA series motors are reliable, and the WRX just gets the job done in all conditions. It's a car that continues to be misunderstood - it is greater than the sum of its parts.
Man all of these people talking shit about the wrx really gets on my nerves because the say that it is such bad value and all of this nonsense but my dad own the 2023 50th anniversary edition of this car in a blue colour and it is such a fun and exciting car to just exist in when take a hard turn or go around a round about just going straight through the roundabout if you take a line that is close the curb it’s so exile rating and when you are just having fun with the car to be honest you don’t care one bit about what all of these people are saying is bad about it so to all of those people,e out there who say that the wrx is a terrible value car or not good enough to me spending time having fun with my family is priceless ❤❤
I really wanted to like the vb wrx. I even bought one hoping it would change my mind but I sold it after 6 months because I couldn’t get over the looks and the floaty steering feel. It felt more like a family commuter car other than a fun sports car. I even color matched the cladding and lowered it on Work wheels and I still couldn’t get over the looks of the car. To each their own tho.
When driving a stick and starting from a stop, go to 2nd gear first and then 1st. Sounds crazy but its shifts way easier into 1st then it does going straight into it. Good review though 👍🏽
Personally I’m having a really difficult time thinking if the GR Corolla is worth getting over a WRX TR, prices for the GR are still way too high, let alone being able to find one is still really difficult especially when compared to the TR.
i take wrx all dayover corolla GR. more practical. better interior. More linear powerplant. Seating position in the GR is also said to be way too high.
Brembos should be on every trim level. Just hit 600 miles on my '23 Limited and the brakes are the biggest issue imo. I'm still riding it easy while I break in the engine, and even with this mild driving the brakes just don't bite. I'd be puckering if riding hard and needing to come to a quick stop. Big brake kit is top of the list for me. Will be cheaper than buying the '24 TR lol
I love my 2018 but I'm warming up to these. I think they look especially good in white with high contrast OR in gunmetal grey/black when the unpainted bits match. I think the WR Blue and most other colors look weird because the contrast is in the middle.
I got a 22 WRX premium and really want to upgrade to the TR but not sure if i can justify the cost. The upgraded interior, brakes, and subaru eyesight would be nice.
I do believe the 22 WRX has great potential. Now that I see this 24 WRX TR I can see it being even better and I'm quite impressed. It looks like a joy to drive. I can't get behind the interior, that big screen is too much. Previous Gen (VA) Just looks the best and is the best out of all the Gen previous and current. No I would still take an VA Wrx STI over the VB WRX. Good video bud
When I was looking for a car in this class, I looked at the WRX. It was nice, but I wanted something with some stronger brakes. This TR solves that problem and adds a couple other nice tweaks, but the price is getting up there. I ended up with a Jetta GLI, and while it doesn't have the AWD it was about $10k less and gets far better fuel economy.
@@tony2473 I was! I previously had a 2017 GTI Sport. I looked at the MK8 GTI also and was immediately turned off by the infotainment and touch controls everywhere. The GLI still has manual HVAC controls and physical switches (for things including sunroof, headlights). I thought I would miss the hatchback but the Jetta trunk is massive and still has the option for folding the seats down. Overall materials quality is a bit lower than the GTI I think, but that is reflected in the price too. The GLI was at least $5k less than comparably equipped GTI. The GTI is still probably the better canyon or weekend track/autocross car, but for everyday sporty driving the GLI is still great.
You can put the recirculation button on the climate dash there is an option you can select such button as the default (is still in the touchscreen but is just on the dash now)
I don't think any new WRX is as much of an upgrade over your modded BRZ Topher. Saving like 20K with a more fun, (even with less power) and objectively looking better platform in the BRZ/GR86 than the new WRX in my book is a big win!
@TheTopher How does this compare to the MK8 Golf R in terms of driving dynamics? does the Golf R give more feeling of rear end rotation compared to this? for driving fun would you choose this over a Golf R or vise versa?
I currently have a mk8 golf r (manual) and a 2018 STI. Considering going back to one car…. How do u think the driving experience is of the TR vs the Golf R?
I had 2 VA STI's before getting my 23' base WRX so I can give my honest opinion. The only thing I miss about the STI is the sound. I love my VB so much
WRX has a larger aftermarket community and more usable backseats. If you can get past the looks of the new WRX and Tesla esque iPad in the middle of the dash, I say get the WRX.

Audi S3, even if lightly used, is what I’m stuck-on. I think it beats this thing pound-for-pound, and is worth the additional expense.
I bought a 2024 Outback Touring XT a month ago and have a few things to note about the 11.6 Starlink display:
1) You can change the A/C button to recirculate if you want, but mine hasn't really used outside air (probably because of the heat and humidity in Central TX).
I bought the GT wrx in 2022. Love the car to this day. Only thing I want is those BREMBOS which should’ve been standard 🤨🤨
Am I the only one that can't imagine spending more than 30k on a car.
The tr trim idk looks so much better with new wheels i was always 5050 but now i think it looks really good especially in black or dark blue
I came for the car but stayed for the watch
I really wanted to like the vb wrx. I even bought one hoping it would change my mind but I sold it after 6 months because I couldn’t get over the looks and the floaty steering feel. It felt more like a family commuter car other than a fun sports car. I even color matched the cladding and lowered it on Work wheels and I still couldn’t get over the looks of the car. To each their own tho.
Whats the alternative if you want a 4 seater?
Best color for the vb wrx combo with TR , dream OEM ++++
When driving a stick and starting from a stop, go to 2nd gear first and then 1st. Sounds crazy but its shifts way easier into 1st then it does going straight into it. Good review though 👍🏽
Did not know you were a watch guy too! legend!!!
Recirc button is programmable. It's deep in the settings, you just have to find it
Personally I’m having a really difficult time thinking if the GR Corolla is worth getting over a WRX TR, prices for the GR are still way too high, let alone being able to find one is still really difficult especially when compared to the TR.
i take wrx all dayover corolla GR. more practical. better interior.
If there was a wagon option, that would be fantastic. Pretty sure there are wagons in other markets.
They call it wrx wagon or levorg.
I got a 22 WRX premium and really want to upgrade to the TR but not sure if i can justify the cost. The upgraded interior, brakes, and subaru eyesight would be nice.
Iconic design cues
Not a GTI fan? I’m asking cuz I can’t decide if I go back to VW… GLI or GTI 😢
@@tony2473 GTI Clubsport
All I can think of is how hideous the infotainment system is! Why are automakers doing this?!
Finally been waiting for you to try it
You can put the recirculation button on the climate dash there is an option you can select such button as the default (is still in the touchscreen but is just on the dash now)
What is the clutch feel/engagement like? I had a 2016 MINI Hardtop S that had a soft, slow engagement clutch. It was not enjoyable to drive.
this is a proof that subaru is of the best brands out there. When they want to build a proper sports car, they sure know how...
I don't think any new WRX is as much of an upgrade over your modded BRZ Topher. Saving like 20K with a more fun, (even with less power) and objectively looking better platform in the BRZ/GR86 than the new WRX in my book is a big win!
@TheTopher How does this compare to the MK8 Golf R in terms of driving dynamics? does the Golf R give more feeling of rear end rotation compared to this? for driving fun would you choose this over a Golf R or vise versa?
golf R does include a drift mode....
I wish they would add auto rev matching .. make it a feature that can be turned on and off but I would take auto rev matching over hill assist
Why does it have the older steering wheel? My 2022 Outback had that but they changed everything up in my new 2023.
Spirited? He’s absolutely booking it lolol
Im going to pick my baby up today!
It’s moving away from the wax line. Doesn’t look like the same car, it’s more of a legacy now
Think you could fit 18” wheels with the size of those brakes?
Yes, I did on mine
nice watch. nice S car! So they have the longevity of the Toyotas?
Hey, topher, how do you compare this specific WRX to a VA STI?
wish so much they offered this in a hatchback
man i wish we got this in Europe
I currently have a mk8 golf r (manual) and a 2018 STI. Considering going back to one car…. How do u think the driving experience is of the TR vs the Golf R?
if you have both cars then you should know
@@langraman8756 i dont have a TR. have not driven the new VB chassis
@@YoshimiPinkRobot so you want the lower power VB WRX
I had 2 VA STI's before getting my 23' base WRX so I can give my honest opinion. The only thing I miss about the STI is the sound. I love my VB so much
It's just few thousands less than a GR Corolla, I am struggling between these two. TR still not a STi but a larger community than Corolla. Need advice
WRX has a larger aftermarket community and more usable backseats. If you can get past the looks of the new WRX and Tesla esque iPad in the middle of the dash, I say get the WRX.
In my opinion I’d spend the extra money and get the Corolla. Very good car. More in line with an sti. I don’t think the price is worth it for the Wrx
Get the GRC if you’re getting anything above the premium trim for the VB WRX
get base or premium and save 10k put some of it towards mods
Assuming you can get the both cars at MSRP, would you take this over a Golf R, given the pricing of the TR is so close?
How do they get it tuned to sound just like a vacuum cleaner during acceleration?
1500 ⌚️ timepiece, my brother in christ 😂
How do you get the access to rent these cars out for a week? Id like to do it too to see how i like certain cars for driving to school and work. Thanks!
