    You know, I'm not gonna rag on the automatic. I'm not going to diminish anyone that gets one of these in an automatic. In the 80's, 90's, and early 2000's we were awash with small-to-smallish 2 door cars that could be had with a manual or automatic. I had 4 cylinder Mazda MX-6 with an automatic/I had a 6 cylinder Ford Probe with a 5 speed stick. Same car basically, but with wildly different personalities and driver experience. There were manual/automatic Mitsubishis, Honda Preludes, Mercury Cougars, Ford Thunderbirds, Toyota Celicas....Hyundai Scoupe's? Saturn SC's? I don't know whatever.
    Point being; All of that is gone now in the 2 door form. You can get a Mustang or Challenger or Camaro today that'll barely fit in a garage with their size. Or you can get one of the few remaining FWD hot hatches, which are objectively Not Coupes. But something like this and the GR... I'm glad they offer it in a MT/AT form. I'm glad it's still compact compared to todays cars. I'm glad it sends the power to the rear wheels. Fuck it. Buy an automatic if you daily in gridlock traffic and have to navigate horrendous parking structures. You can let your mom with the knee replacement surgery use it in a pinch if she needs to. Buy a manual if that's your thing and it enhances your driving fun so much. Who cares? Buy it regardless because there's so little out there in the small 2 door car segment. Soon there will be none. And we'll miss the days when we even had the chance to buy an automatic BRZ/GR86.

    Transmission jokes aside, remember what he said, 70% of sales are automatics for the 86/BRZ. Let that sink in. Stop complaining about the automatic, unless you yourself have purchased a brand new manual transmission version. If you haven't done that, your opinion literally means nothing to Toyota/Subaru because you aren't going to buy the car anyway. Buying used doesn't count. The manufacturers only get paid when you buy new, and it's new car buying trends that they must cater to in order to sell cars.

      Absolutely. No CVT, no turbo, and no direct injection-only means this car should ultimately prove more long-term reliable than any of the new turbo-DI offerings from Honda, Hyundai, VW, or anybody else. I really wish Toyota would allow Subaru to use their D-4S system on all Subarus, not just the BRZ.

      Realistically, the only things Subaru could add to this new BRZ while still keeping it at a similar pricepoint would be better brakes/suspension, twenty more hp from this NA engine, the GR86's higher duckbill rear spoiler, and an updated infotainment system with sharper screen resolution.
      In a nutshell, everything the BRZ will receive next year, or in the first refresh, minus the twenty additional hp. We won't be seeing more stock ponies anytime soon. There will definitely be a Brembo/Bilstein-style Performance Package option in the near future.

    • @Jez4prez1
      @Jez4prez1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the car has both port and direct injection, that is what the 4-DS is. The 4D-S injection is something Toyota forced into this platform, Subaru didn't want it, because they wanted to use their own system. I read for some reason in early negotiations, Toyota made it basically mandatory for the project to go ahead, and it's literally one of the only mechanical components they do (along with the gearbox) while Subaru basically does everything else. All prior subaru engines were port only, but subaru has developed their own direct injection too. It's only FA20 and FA24 in BRZ/GR86 that has both the port and direct injection from 4-DS, while other new subarus, like new outback and new forester have subaru direct injection now. I don't know enough about it to be honest, but I heard some tuners complain that the direct injection makes it harder to tune, but if they have been experts on EJ's and other engines most of their career, it makes sense they know port inside out. I don't know enough about it to be honest, I read pros and cons etc.

    I drove both the auto and the manual back to back at Monticello Motor Club on track. The tuning of the auto is very disappointing on track. It’s very slow and reluctant to downshift. Upshifts are pretty good. Putting it in manual mode alleviates those complaints though. The actual shifts are reasonably quick, but this is no ZF 8HP.
    On the street the auto is absolutely fine. No complaints at all. If you’re going yo track the car, get the manual. It’s superb. It’s smoother than the last generation and there’s no issue getting it into 4th as they’ve improved the synchros. I have a GR86 in order because I loved driving it. I drove the base model and the stereo was horrible, but the rest of the interior was acceptable. I really want one. The one BIG complaint I have is that the car should have been a lift back for better cargo capacity. The utility of this thing seems horrible. • @Snicker60515
    @Snicker60515 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love watching these two argue, it's gold. What I still don't understand for the life of me is hearing people complain about how automatic transmissions don't respond when downshifted after getting a button pressed or whatever. I'm not that old, but I'm not that young either, but the almost foolproof way to get an automatic to downshift is to FLOOR THE THROTTLE, problem solved. You're never gonna get the response as you will when properly double de-clutching a manual, but the car is gonna go mostly when you ask it to. If it stops doing that, you know that your automatic is about to take a dump. The best thing about this automatic is that if driven more or less responsibly, it's gonna last, PERIOD.
    I'm seriously considering buying this car after it's released and if so, it'll be the first BRAND NEW and probably last, new car I'll ever own, and of course it's gonna be a proper manual, which is always better. But please, stop complaining about shift quality with an automatic transmission when shifted with the little buttons. If you wanna manually change gears, get the three pedal one! And if not, that's also fine, hence the term AU-TO-MA-TIC, which does the chore of changing gears for you!
    Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong...

    I'll never understand why so many americans feel like dailying a manual is a pain in the ass. (Edit: of course in some regions it is)
    Sure, if you don't like it, you don't like it. But here in germany most people, even my grandma, drive normal cars with manual transmissions, shifting just becomes second nature and you don't even think about it. Buying an affordable fun sportscar with an automatic seems like such a weird thing to do, it's more expensive, it's (probably) less reliable and more expensive if it breaks, and in this case it's even slower.

      In Europe, auto is considered a luxury option. In USA, manual is the luxury option.. u only see high take rates on M3s, and GT3s but then America has by far the highest percent of those German cars being sold as manuals

      Have you driven in America? Horrible traffic where I am. A manual is just a pain in the ass in bumper to bumper traffic. I drive a manual but I completely understand why people drive autos here.

      @@andrewable2634 Yeah I have, Jessup PA and Kingsport TN, not very different from germany, much bigger roads and smoother traffic than the rural part of germany I live in.
      I understand if people in big cities rather opt for autos, but in the US it's generally not a thing for most normal cars.

    My first car (in Canada), was a 2019 EcoBoost Mustang 10 speed Auto with the Performance Pack. I paid $27k CAD for it. The old gal ran 0-60 in 5.1s (timed) and my Magnaflow exhaust popped and bang like a turbo coupe should. The front end on the stang was a bit vague but once you got use to it, she was plenty fast for street duty. If I were to buy my first car again, I don't think I will be able to pick a BRZ over a little pony... No matter how good it is on the track.

    • @nicolas277

      I looked at the Mustand Ecoboost when I was shopping for my car, but I just can't drive automatic and the manual Mustang has the clutch really badly placed for me. I keep hitting it when I try to put my foot on the footrest. I also didn't like the interior of the car. Doesn't help that a lot of Ford dealers here in Quebec are really bad... In the end, I'm driving a BRZ and I like it a lot. And if you wanna race me on a drag strip, I have my Z900 for that :P

      @Barbwire710 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a first-gen BRZ for 3.5 years and ended up in an Ecoboost premium. It’s a much better car overall and I would take it 9/10 over the BRZ unless I was on track. Much faster, better comfort, but much more vauge/disconnected steering.

    A little disappointed in Mark's dismissal of shortcomings because "no one's going to keep this stock." In addition to this not being true, an acceptable As-Is level at sale seems like a minimum.

    Thank you for the review of the auto version and for giving it a fair chance. Sure it's not a DCT, but it's still better than the CVT that Subaru puts in the new WRX. Also, how does the ADAS behave? Is it intrusive like some systems?

    Love the argument about the transmissions lol. Ive never had an issue driving automatics, because I mainly like cruising, however I do understand why people love manuals so much, because its truly an engaging experience and you are in total control. However, if the car is a sports car, and my main commuter, I just prefer an automatic, regardless of less power/engagement. It really just comes down to personal preference
