The biggest curse-ending moment in baseball history demands a deep rewind | 2016 World Series Game 7

  • This is perhaps the most important at-bat in baseball history. With two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning of Game 7 of the 2016 World Series, the Chicago Cubs stared down Cleveland looking for one final out.
The difference between an out and a hit -- potentially a walk-off hit -- would determine which curse reached its end: Chicago's painful, generations-long "Billy Goat Curse" or Cleveland's own long history of defeat on the biggest stage.
This moment was so big that it kind of buried how absurd the whole game was. Chicago had come back to tie the series, but experienced some bad breaks, then fully blew their substantial lead when Rajai Davis homered off typically lights-out closer Aroldis Chapman. After more bad breaks, Chicago finally pulled ahead again thanks to more heroics in the top of the tenth, but in this moment, stood one big hit-- and more scoring from Davis-- away from blowing it all again.
Before we watch this monumental baseball event, we have so much rewinding to do.

I'm 25, started watching in 2000 at age 7. Since then, the Cubs have a top 10 record in MLB (4th in NL) some division titles and a World Series. I'll guess they'll have another one soon.

This series was so good for baseball. I am a die hard Yankee fan (currently hoping they have a little comeback of their own) and I was so invested in this series. I didn’t care too much if either team won but deep deep deep down inside I had so much hope for the cubs. So many years of just bad luck were thrown out the window on this final play. I remember I went to a sports bar with a girl I met on Tinder and I was so into this game that I paid her virtually no mind. We never hung out again but I’m ok with that because I was able to witness history.

Steven Delgado Same here Bro. I am also a Yankees fan with no dog in the fight. However this game 7 will always bring a smile to my face on a personal level for this reason. My Mother had died just a couple of weeks earlier in Mid October. Between losing the most important person in my life and also even around the backdrop of the circus aka the infamous 2016 Presidential campaign dividing America and much of the world as well, caused even a tear in eye when the game ended. Not so much the Cubs ended their so called “curse” but how watching this legendary game 7 on November 2, 2016 kind of put a closure of a very sad 😢 month for my family. So this is why this game will always be remembered on a personal level to me almost as much as the entire 2001 World Series for 9/11.

When they won it all in 2016, I realized that I stopped paying attention as much as I had done in previous seasons. I also realized how my bias blinded me to appreciating talent on other teams. I had a a ha moment during 2021. I got a recommendation for the Cubs on TH-cam and had no interest in watching the video. I now appreciate other teams for what they are. I went from cautiously optimistic, to beside myself with anger and sadness, and then back from the brink with the best moment in baseball I've ever seen in my life thanks to Rajai Davis's game tying 2- run homer, and then finally to the most depressed I've ever been. All in the span of 10 innings. One hell of a game, the only thing that put a blemish on it was that horrible rain delay that should have never happened.

Man on man. That entire season and playoffs for the Cubs was a fairy tale. It couldn’t of been written any better and it couldn’t of ended any better. There was so many good stories from that season. David Ross’ announcing his retirement, to being put in to relieve Contreras and catch for Lester in game 7, and blowing the next two plays and having two runs score. Then hitting a homer an inning later, in game 7 of the World Series as a 39 year old in his last game ever. It doesn’t get much better than that.

One of the best and most significant World Series games ever. Two teams looking to end their respective curses (Indians - Rocky Colavito/Chief Wahoo, Cubs - Billy Goat)
whilst knowing that only 1 of those two curses would be vanquished, and that they could only vanquish the curse if they won the series. The Cubs vanquished their curse, the Indians came up short yet again.

Can we get a Twins-Braves 1991 Game 7 rewinder? Two Cinderella teams going head-to-head, the series had more extra innings games than any other up to that point, lots of wacky plays in the series (ron gant at first base, Lonnie smith getting faked out), and a phenomenal pitchers duel in game 7 with a 10th inning 1-0 finish. It's loaded with material to talk about.

I remember absolutely sweating bullets. I'm not even a Cubs fan, but I wanted them to win so badly. Was devastated when it looked like they were going to blow it, and then elated when they finally won, noting that of course they had to make it a nail-biter.
Honestly, this is a good candidate for the greatest World Series game ever played, right up there with Game 6 of 1975. I'd argue the outside circumstances make it even better.

However don’t rule out in no order: 1975, 1986, 1991, 2001, and 2011 being the other legendary fall classics in last 75 years as well. Plus 1968, 1971, 1979, 1982, 1993 and 2017 being honorable mentions as well IMO. If you don’t know about those other mentioned World Series please do a google search. Thanks

Though a history book says Joe Maddon was the manager that ended the drought for the Cubs, he made wrong decision after wrong decision in game 7. Players are the ones that brought themselves back on their feet during the rain delay after the 9th inning. Maddon was paranoid during the game 7.

Good stuff! Rajai Davis did have the big hits for the Indians but he absolutely killed them with his defense in CF. Should’ve easily caught Contreras’s RBI double that bounced on the warning track. Let Bryant tag up and score on a very shallow fly ball. And let Almora tag and get to 2nd by catching the ball while backpedaling.
