The Game 7 walk-off finish to the 2001 World Series needs a deep rewind | Yankees vs. Diamondbacks

  • The 2001 World Series was a strange championship for a lot of reasons. The September 11th attacks pushed Game 1 all the way into late October and cast a shadow over everything. The Yankees then became the national darling, in some respect, even though they'd normally be the villains, having won the last three titles. The Diamondbacks had become the fastest expansion team to reach the World Series, and they mostly outplayed New York through six games. And Game 7 had enough twists and turns to act as a fitting cap to this strange, melancholy, and memorable chapter in sports history.

      the fact we knew luis was going to hit it just a matter of where makes it even funnier how good he was that season....no one thought rivera was going to get him out with a strike....this is prime mariano and yankees at their peak and the d backs didn't even sneeze at them...because they were so much better that year and their dominance in their 3 wins proved how they easily could of won all 7 games

    The Yankees and D-backs had a fun fact in common: The Yankees fired manager Buck Showalter in '95, then won their first World Series in 18 years the next year. Showalter moved on to the Diamondbacks. They fired him at the end of the 2000 season, and won the World Series the next year.

    Tim McCarver, the color commentator for this game, predicted the game winning hit. He said that he didn’t agree with pulling the infield in, because Rivera is exceptional at jamming hitters which causes bloopers and flare hits because they hit it off the hands. Sure enough, Gonzalez puts a blooper over the infield.

    • @danielfreeman8725
      @danielfreeman8725 5 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      my favorite thing about this is that McCarver is most known for his gaffes, but he could also be scary dead on sometimes. And like in this case when he was, it can be just as wonderful as his funniest gaffes.

    • @manuginobilisbaldspot424
      @manuginobilisbaldspot424 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I am in the small minority that loved McCarver. And he did that more than once. I distinctly remember the 1988 NLCS when he called Gary Carter's GW single in Game 1, saying the Dodgers were playing deep against the Carter of five years prior...then he hits a shallow single that John Shelby catches at normal depth. Never understood why he got so much flak. And when you see guys like Harold Reynolds and John Smoltz in comparison, it's not even close.

    • @connormadden182
      @connormadden182 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      McCarver may come across a bit senile in the booth sometimes, but his baseball knowledge and sense for the game is off the charts. This should be a surprise to no one, given the man caught Bob Gibson and backstopped two Cardinals championship teams over a 21 career.

    • @ADEAL918
      @ADEAL918 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot Reynolds was a disaster--that's why he only lasted two years. Smoltz is getting there. He's a smart guy with a lot of insight, but his perspective as a pitcher is always going to be very specific and won't see as many different angles as a catcher will. I was a McCarver fan too, though I do think he was better as a team with Al Michaels and Jim Palmer in the '80's than he was with Joe Buck.

    That Tony Womack AB is the single most overlooked big moment in baseball history. Mariano Rivera was murder on lefties and while Mark Grace led off with a single...this AB...I mean, if you took the entire D-Backs lineup, Womack is probably the last guy you want up there in that spot. But I'll be damned if he didn't take that legendary cutter and do what 98% of people in history couldn't do. And that's turn on it. Just a remarkable AB. No, we lost to LSU on a final throw from Jamarcus Russell. We had that game won but a fumble by Keegan Herring on the one yard line to go up ahead even more then our defense gave up a 4th down play where Early Doucet didn't catch the ball in the end zone but the refs called it a touchdown was the Russell throw, a game in which we gave up a blocked field goal for a touchdown and a blocked punt for a touchdown. The first out of the 9th, the Diamondbacks brought in a Pinch Hitter bunting specialist in Jay Bell, who has the (post-depression) NL record for Sacrifice bunts in a season. Only he had a terrible bunt to get the guy at third out easily (the runners on 1st and 2nd bunt is hard to do). That is why Bell scored the series winning run.

    Looking back on this series, I'm sure most of America were rooting for the Yankees to win in the short aftermath of 9/11 and all the symbolism that would come with it, but truthfully, Arizona was just the better team. 3 of there 4 victories were convincing if not blowouts. The Yankees won all 3 of there games at home in absolute nail biters in each that came down to last inning blown saves by Arizona. The Diamondbacks deserved this WS.

    Brings back fond memories of that evening! Well made video that informs the viewer of the larger context that led to the oh-so-sweet bloop single by Gonzo.

      This would be a great episode! Boise State coming out of no where to play Oklahoma in a game absolutely no one thought they could win. Only to use every trick play *perfectly* to get a lead, lose it spectacularly to the Sooners, and come back once again. That Statue of Liberty play to win it would be perfect for a moment in history.

      Cam Hoag The ending kind of ruins it, I wouldn’t want to watch a moment in history where only like 4 people knew what happened in the first 30 seconds after the goal

      That was my idea! As much as I would love to see it (as it is a very personal moment for me), but watching the moment, it was kind of ruined by the fact no one knew it was in the net. Though, I'd still love to see it.
