  • Following up on the Snap-on vs MegaPro ratcheting screwdriver video -- a LOT of viewers commented that there is a much cheaper alternative to the Snap-on version -- JH Williams.
    Both Snap-on & JH Williams are made/owned/sold by Snap-on....but subtract the name & a few features, and you end up with an almost identical version at half the cost!
    Williams WRS-1 vs Snap-on SSDMR4BG
    In this video we compare the Snap-on directly to the JH Williams equivalent & you can see first hand how they stack up!

    I have both. The snap-on for 29 years(present from dad on my 16th birthday) and the Williams for 13 years. Had the ratchet mech replaced by a snap-on truck 3 years ago. Use both screwdrivers everyday doing Audio /Video installation. We've tried every screwdriver from Lowe's, Home Depot, Sears, and Harbor freight and these are the two that remain on the tool pallet. Once you learn how to pull the bit out and hold it while you dump the other bits in your hand and drop the others back in the end, it is quicker than any bit holder we've tried. The snap-on gets grabbed first, the knurled shaft does make a difference when your starting wall plates and other low friction screws. The long shafts make the screwdriver handle and balance well and they fit in our tool pallets really well. Both are well worth the money for tools that get used everyday and have lasted as long as they have. Thanks for the review!

      I can't even imagine using it without the knurled shank. The new snap on one with the protruting knob allowing one finger use of the ratchet mechanism is far superior to both. I have had the snap on for almost 20yrs and replaced it once because of a bad mechanism.

    I have the soft grip version of the snap on ratchet and it's great. It has a high tooth ratchet count that shines when used in tight places. I also have the megapro ratchet. It has a lower tooth ratchet count that works best with rusted or super tight screws. They bother serve their purpose really well.

    I can tell you from 26 years of experience. IF you have to disassemble anything that was put together BY a Machine, with Machine screws, the Snap-on is the clear winner. Why? This video did not actually SHOW these tools being used, so you'll have to take my word for it. When you "Grab" the handle of the Snap-on, you naturally put your Thumb down the shaft in the area made for it to Break free a factory installed screw. This adds to your grip, and total torque applied. Once screw is loose, you spin the knurled shaft and the top ratchets easily as you spin the screw out. Less wrist wear and tear and 6X faster that your wrist. For a pro, this difference is Time, and that's money and less wrist problems down the road. If you make money with your tools, this can pay for itself in a couple days, the difference in price. I am NOT at all involved with Snap-on...

    I have a j h Williams ratchet that I remember my father showing me a few years before he passed away saying that it belonged to his grandfather. It was all seized up because it was left in a very wet shop.
    My father said he wanted to have it rebuilt,
    I recently came across it while I was switching tool boxes so I decided to clean it up and take out the mechanism and see what it look like. A little bit penetrating fluid and a couple of whacks with a dead blow to loosen it up and this heavily neglected 60 something year old ratchet works beautifully! Just as well as some of my older snap-on's.

    did any brake clean get into the bit compartment? With the Williams not having the o-ring? i have a snap-on one that my dad handed down to me probably over 10 years old and it still works great. only thing is sometimes the end cap will get almost stuck and really hard to come off but doesn't appear to have cross threaded. gets a little jammed up. not sure if it's because of the old plastic threads or what. i want to buy a new one but hey if the Williams is half price and same quality i might as well go for that. assuming that the inside parts that ratchet are the same. .. Fit and finish along with service also come with snap on if you use yours daily 😉 I was a tiny disappointed they opted out for the screw cap driver insert but maybe thinking it was a bit gimiky or never used. I also think they should try to incorporate the interchangeable shaft lengths like the soft handles have. Perfect screwdriver right there

    To me as a mechanic I use the snap on. im sure the quality is the same but I pay extra for convenience. Time is money in the automotive industy, and the right tools make things go quicker. In my eyes I see the extra mark up on snap on, mac or any tool truck tool is paying for the guy to come to you and help you one on one with your needs. I know for a fact that I trust my snap on or mac guys much more than any lowes or home depot employee because they have to maintain a good relationship.

      Meh, you're an automotive mechanic. It seems more than aviation or large diesel mechanics, Snap-On puts a large amount energy into automotive mechanics, often filling the classrooms all they can with the word Snap-On. Why? Well, automotive enthusiasts have some of the largest shop ego's around. Frankly, when it comes to performance, I'll walk the same of not faster circles around you with my Husky tools with no difference in tool longevity. As an advantage, I build very effective setups with far more options for situation. To make it better, I get to make a complete replica of my professional set and home. All in total is still half Snap-on for the same overall performance and longevity. Also, there are home Depots everywhere that replace no questions asked, same day replacement even when I travel.

    The part people don't get is in 3 yrs if they come out with a better screwdriver I can trade in my Snap-on screwdriver on the newer one and get reimbursed the purchase price towards the trade-in. That won't happen with Williams or Kobalt. I just traded in Snap-on ratchets I bought in 1974 b/c I don't use them anymore b/c I like the fine tooth ratchets and I was credited list price towards the purchase of extended length ratchets. For the DIYer Snap-on prices may not make sense but to the professional mechanic there are a lot more advantages to buying Snap-on that people don't know about. I don't have all Snap-on and have my share of OTC, Pico, AESwave, Knipex, Starrett, Astro, etc but I only buy quality tools that seldom break b/c I can't afford to stop what I am doing b/c a tool failed.broke. I've also traded in Snap-on tool boxes & upgraded to what I have today and the money I was credited was equal to or sometimes more than what I paid for them mainly b/c The other part of the screwdriver handle that makes the Snap-on better is the Snap-on handle has a groove for your thumb to provide more grip when turning and the bigger the handle the more to grip. I take pride & care for my tools. The bottom line: Buy the best tool you can afford no matter what the brand but always know ALL the benefits of buying a certain brand tool over another & make your decision.

    I share the same opinion as many of the viewers. It's hard to get excited about any these after using the German options-Wera, Wiha etc. Comparitaly speaking the SO & Williams would be like going back and watching 420p after watching 4k. Thanks for the video Daniel! Oh, and kinda waiting on the IR W5132 review. I can't make up my mind! 😁👍

      They are just basic electrician tools and pointless for any hardcore work.

    Nice "lobster plate" on your wall, or as a lot of people used to call them here in Maine, "scorpion plates." I always thought it was funny that the lobster is red, which means its a lobster carcass (they only turn red when they're cooked). They ditched those in 2000 or so and went with the "chickadee plates" which are still standard issue. There's a new version of the lobster plate available as a specialty plate, and it's yet another image of a dead lobster - www.maine.gov/dmr/science-research/species/lobster/lobsterlicenseplate.html

    • @schmojo33
      @schmojo33 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The quality of these two tools is the same but its Snap On's price gouging that is the point of the humor that I'm getting at. Snap On's choice to cheap out on not including such an inexpensive o-ring on the Williams brand of tool just because Willaims isn't marketed as a premium tool brand is distasteful. Snap On expects and knows people will pay the price because one says Snap-On on it and because they know people like to complete collections and color match. Then there is also the tool truck service, but that really depends on the rep because some reps you literally have to chase down as they drive past your shop.

    • @schmojo33
      @schmojo33 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I agree that the Makita is a very good deal for the money and would probably be better for most people. I have the Megapro automotive screwdriver and for me that thing makes more sense because I keep mine in my general purpose mobile tool box in a grab and go hand tool roll. The on-board bit storage makes it super compact and 14 bits takes care of just about any fastener for around the house use and the ratcheting mechanism is absolutely perfect and a world apart from just about anything else in the sub $30 range. The Milwaukee feels like a gravel truck on a dirt road compared to the Megapro. I thought the nearly $40 price tag was steep, but I splurged and now other ratcheting screwdrivers and bit drivers are inferior after having used this for some time now. Lesser priced ratcheting screwdrives would be a compromise to me. And it is made in the USA which still means something to me and is part of the added price.

  • @shysterlicious
    @shysterlicious 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was hoping that your review (or comparison) would have included the use of both screwdrivers , and that you would noted any differences. This would allow the viewers to make a better informed choice, instead of asking that same audience to submit an opinion on a tool they may or may not have.

    • @RealToolReviews
      @RealToolReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only difference (other than what I pointed out) will be the "feel in your hand" which cannot be explained via video. It is personal preference only. The reason that I ask viewers to comment, is that many of them own one or both & can attest to which they like better. The previous comments on the MegaPro vid is why I made this follow-up showing the differences/similarities between the Snap-on & Williams --- which proves that they are not the "exact same" as many people said that they were.

  • @dillwiggle2
    @dillwiggle2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Williams is a division of Snap-On, looks exactly the same except the grip is slightly different probably exact same internals, if you don't care about the fancy colours the Williams is probably just as good. Bit storage kinda needs improvement.

    • @rogermurph101
      @rogermurph101 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dill Wiggle I disagree. I've had screwdrivers with fancier bit storage. I prefer just dumping them in the handle. You can throw more in there than what it comes with, whatever you use most, and it's not difficult to dump them into your hand and change bits. You don't have to set it down or anything. It just doesn't need to be any more complicated.

    • @MrCoffeekelly

    With this day and age and internet options to purchase items I don't see how Snap-on is even still in business with their high prices.
    All these new mechanics out of school think they have to have top of the line from the tool trucks and you could really get into a lot of debt if you don't know what you're doing

    • @stever5887
      @stever5887 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      New mechanics should buy as much as they can while still in school (generally at 50 cents on the dollar), although I believe they have a dollar limit as to how much you can buy on that plan. However, a lot of tools from other manufacturers are acceptable if not just as good as Snap-on, and Snap-on has simply rebranded a lot of them. The internet has opened a lot of people's eyes to this. And more of these new mechanics are opting for tool boxes from other manufacturers, on the theory that the tools actually earn you the money, not the box they're stored in. You're right about the debt thing, and guys shouldn't commit themselves to so much of it at the beginning of their careers. They need to ease into it in case this turns out not to be their ultimate career path. Pawn shops often have a good selection of Snap-on tools from mechanics that couldn't make it in the industry.

    I have a Husky version of this and it too is identical to both of these especially the Snap-on because it has the knurled area for grip unlike the Williams...51 piece with holder (molded rubber)and holder in handle ... Not loose. But and actual revolver type they clip into(if you'd prefer to use that) unlike both of these... and I think I paid under $20 and it works great! 👀👍™
    And... It's nylon too. ..
