Half the the channels that were doing the tool reviews with the icon tools didn’t did a follow up like you are doing. They just did a single video and that was it. With the recent videos you have done you can see you are using the icon tools and that proves that your are actually testing them and makes this follow up video awesome. Great channel like I always say and love the updates on Instagram too.

Finally a tool review that I absolutely agree with. When I used to wrench for a living, a senior tech told me “buy the best and you’ll only buy it once.” He also told me “If you borrow it more than once, you need to buy your own.” I spent thousands on my tools and I’m glad I spent the money on sockets, wrenches, and ratchets.

Buying tools twice is never saving money.

I know this is a really old comment, but the only reason I would disagree is in the event of breakage. It's touched on in the video. Most wrenches, rachets, and sockets have lifetime warranties these days, so you can get a replacement for a broken Pittsburgh, Icon, Husky, Kobalt, or Craftsman replaced in the same day versus waiting a week to a month for the tool truck to come by and get the warranty process done. Even in the rare event that HF won't warranty the tool, you can buy four Icon (or more than a dozen Pittsburgh) 1/2" ratchets for the price of a single Snap-on. That's enough for some people because breaking a tool is still a rare enough occurrence that they can't justify spending $50,000 on tool truck brands when they can spend a fraction of that elsewhere.

    • @Tk3997
      @Tk3997 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Buy the 'best' and you'll get gouged by a gigantic mark up for a not even CLOSE to commensurate increase quality. Don't buy the absolute cheapest shit, but buy the medium grade stuff it will work pretty much forever will still be literally a fraction of the price and nowadays come with robust warranties anyway. I've been using basic HF sockets, Gearwrench and Icon ratchets and a mix of medium priced Icon, GW, and Tekton wrenches for years without any issue. Anyone that tells you need tool truck shit for 'pro' work is full of the aforementioned substance.
Really just go look in the boxes of dudes that's been at it for some years, but not like 20 or 30.(also note most of those boxes are probably going to be 'retail' brands too because 'pro' toolboxs are another complete rip off) But you'll find they're full of the higher end 'retail' brands, not tool truck stuff. It's really only the old foogies that will seriously say you need to spend like 500 dollars for five wrenches or some shit. You just don't and spreading the nonsense that you do is a huge disservice to newer techs who frankly get pretty shit pay starting out in allot of cases and shouldn't be spending huge chunks of it on grossly overpriced tools.

Invested in quite a bit of Icon recently and I totally agree with your analysis. If I was in a shop 9-5 I would have spent my money differently, but for a home gamer this allows me to have a well equipped shop with reasonable quality for a price I could justify. Thanks for the videos!

I can say the pittsburgh pro impacts are definitely good quality im a heavy equipment mechanic. And those sockets take a beating im not so much a fan of the icon sockets but the wrenches and ratchets are deffinantly worth the money. I dont even use chrome sockets. I just use impact sockets for everything and they take abuse every day. I broke 1deep well impact from harbor frieght. And all the 1in aockets i use are from napa they are ok. I just never was a fan of the prices. I want quality without having to spend half a weeks pay on a 12pc socket set on a truck. Thats my thought on it

      @StrongerThanBigfoot ปีที่แล้ว +2

Amen!!! I been training as a Deisel mechanic and everyone laughs at Harbour Freight but I told them I'm not going in debt for overpriced tools. All my HF tools have held up to heavy use and I'm especially happy with the impact sockets and Hercules impact 3/8 and 1/2 guns. Snap Off offers a 2 year warranty on their power tools where HF gives a 5 year warranty and Lifetime on all hand tools. I upgrade where I need to.

I mix and match my tools have had harbor freight impact sockets for 9 years , never had any issues with any of the sockets. Have proto, craftsman, Pittsburgh, matco and now an icon ratchets. The only one that I have broken was the craftsmen a few times3/8 and 1/2, cracked a 15/16 craftsman deep socket. Broke the square drive off the matco 1/2 breaker bar. Have a proto breaker bar for its Replacement. Also some funny stuff I bought a set of Stanley gear wrenches from Walmart and have never broken them, there 9 yearsold also. I would say if you don't miss use tools they will last. I work in a factory on industrial equipment 50-70 hrs a week so these tools have been put to the test with little to no issues. Great video!

“I need new tools.” “Entry” Sweet review - I totally second the professional philosophy you explained. Even though the tool doesn’t make who you are, your sills or worth- but it may be about the dependability of the tool, it’s durability or accuracy that you cannot afford to put in question as a professional. Great vid!

I was very excited for these tools to launch and I’m honestly glad I haven’t spent the money on them. I thought they would hold up better but clearly not as good as my Gearwrench, Grey Pneumatic and Snap-On sockets/wrenches have. I would like to try them one day, maybe after revisions are made, but for now I don’t need new tools

I have mainly icon and I literally have only broken one thing. It was like a step down adaptor from 3/4 to 3/8 so I could get the yoke off of a kenworth that had locktite. Icon is a great tool brand and as someone who uses tools to their fullest working on semis most rusted out I can say I wouldn’t have any of it in my tool box if it didn’t work

Craftsman China wrenches are strong and have been great for me. I also have the sockets and no issues here and have done tons of work with them. I checked out the Icon sockets and they were really light so I did not purchase them. I did purchase the 1/4 rather and like that very much. I think that’s about as much as I will spend on Icon.

My favorite 1/4” ratchet is the Klein right angle screwdriver, it comes with a 1/4” socket adapter bit. The bit holds the sockets on with magnetism instead of the typical spring lock on other ratchets.
It has more clearance than any other 1/4” that I’ve seen, and has a nice finger loop as a handle so I can use one finger to loosen/tighten fasteners.
My main problem is I don’t know where to buy more of the 1/4” adapters.

Great review. I agree, they are not professional grade. They are very good for the DIYer or "weekend warrior" as you say. I like ICON because if I break something on a Saturday, I can run to my local Freight and they swap it for free. Not an issue I've had yet with them though.

Yeah, that’s the page I’m on. I’m a DIY guy who wrenches a lot because our three vehicles have nearly 600k combined. But I don’t consider ICON to be pro grade. They are just one of many sufficient/decent Taiwanese tools out there. They are better than many at the price point, but honestly I prefer Tekton for many things. I have lots of gearwrench and Tekton and only recently added ICON. Happy with all the ICON I have so far except for the early gen sockets which had crappy chroming and I already warranteed.

Gave ICON a try when I wanted some Mid-Deep, 3/8" drive sockets.
Also grabbed a ratchet in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2" drive to try them out VS the inexpensive ratchets I already have, some Tekton, and Snap-on ratchets I recently treated myself to.
Will have to see how they hold up.
I don't wrench for a living - so the price point was pretty decent with a 25% off coupon on everything I bought.
I've had a 1/4" drive set of SAE 'Quinn' sockets from Harbor Freight for HVAC work and they have held up just fine with regular use over the last few years.

Have you ever tried Tekton tool's? I would love to see your review on them. I am retired and living in Florida these days. I love playing with classic cars. When Kmart sold Craftsman I started looking for a new tool brand it came down to Icon or Tekton and I choose Tekton. I am not a professional, but I just thought Tektons quality was a little better. For the Craftsman line, they had a Professional Series out for a while that was a nice step up from the janky old stuff. In all these years using Craftsman only broke one wrench and the pin fell out of one ratchet and they are replacing that under warranty for something I bought 40 years ago.
They are coming out with a new V-Line that might be nice, but never seen any yet.

At the end of the day, we can only be as good as the tool
If you are the best in your craft but have crappy tools you will do your best but if you have quality tools and you are the best at your trade the results will be more than great!

I've used the icon 1/2 deep sockets everyday in a professional setting.
They are excellent no problems at all kinda..... The chrome is plating is starting to come off. With that said my "new" snal on tools are also showing chrome peeling. The newer snap on products aren't nearly as good as the old stuff. Bottom line some of the icon too are really really good

I know snap on should warranty the chrome , HF not so sure. I have a cornwell ratchet I hardly use that’s peeling up a storm. Luckily no cuts to my hand before I noticed

I need new tools. Thank you for making Subaru videos! Other Subaru related videos usually feature teenagers putting in aftermarket body kits or wheel spacers.

Like you said, just like a professional baker wouldn't be caught dead with black & decker mixer, but there's nothing wrong with black and decker for a home baker. I'm a home gamer and I'm looking forward to getting a few Icons for their lifetime warranty and price point but something a bit more premium than Pittsburg Pros

I need new tools. Im more curious on your thoughts on the long icon ratcheting wrenches. I noticed that the teeth on the non slip version are not as defined. Thanks! Great video!

Finally .. an honest review .
I always thought this were as good as the Pittsburgh brand ..
Probably just trying to jack up the prices with a facelift.

For me as home mechanic i love icon, i have $4000 worth of icon tools. They've been holding up awesome for me! And youre right mr Subaru i just cant go for snap on its not justifiable for me, same stuff i have now at snap on would be worth 20,000+, of course theyre better than icon but icon is in its own legue in my opinion.

I'm thinking about buying the full line of icon. I'm no professional technician. But the cheaper tools especially the wrenches just won't cut the mustard. I think these will be good enough for me. I used to be an assembly mechanic and had a roll away box full of snap on and Craftsman pro grade tools and it got stolen from my garage

I need new tools and that was the most honest review of the Icon brand but people have to remember you are paying for what you get but over all for the price they are not that bad.I do have too say m=our grandfather passed on March at 89 years old and he left me and my brother all his tools and shop,he had Snap on & Mac so we get the cheaper tools too just have around and carry in the cars so if they got stolen the high end don't get stolen.

I agree Snap-on makes the best wrenches and sockets. I've got all brands (snap-on, mac, matco, craftsman, and gearwrench) and by far snap-on is far superior to the others. I am a mechanic by trade and if I need to get something apart I grab the snap-on. Yes they're expensive but worth it, I've have tools from snap-on that are over 30 years old and get used everyday.

the den of tools: "these icon chrome sockets from harbor freight are the best. They are snap on killers and are made and designed better. I have no complaints and out performed my snap on sockets that I don't have. My only complaint is that they crack, wear out from the drive, walls, and destroy my impacts anvil. YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND IM A REAL MECHANIC. I HAVE TO USE CHROMES ON IMPACTS!"

Saw your video comparing that icon flex head to the snapon.. you noted some places where the icon was thinner build.. Did you find it made any real difference in application and day to day wrenching? Was it as an issue in practical use vs. on paper?
