It’s interesting how the shy guy’s went from being the goomba’s of super Mario bros 2 then disappearing to becoming the goomba’s of the Yoshi series. The shy guys are apart of the yoshi series just as they are apart of the Mario series with many variants coming from the yoshi games. I also never thought of the bandits as shy guys but it makes sense.

A high contender for most enjoyable character design, what's not to like about these little guys.
I like to think General Guy lines the guys up and has a talent show. When they show him how neat they are, he just comes up with names on the fly. Like some dude shows up and does a flip, blowing the general away as he just goes "OOOOO THAT'S A WOOZY!"
First half of the video was great, second half was even better. Felt like you got a lot funnier in the second half (probably cause shy guy variants are just more insane than shiffits)

Fun fact: During the development of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Sneeds were instead referred to as "Chucks". This name was likely changed to avoid confusion with Chargin' Chucks.

I've noticed something. All of the shy guy variants can all be considered the same species, but snifits are a little strange. The only common attribute shared with all snifits is the mask. Bros just slapped a snifit mask on a cactus and said that's a snifit. And they have other weird attributes like being able to shoot bullets, breath fire, ect. Attributes not found in shy guys for the most part. In superstar saga, we see fawful and cackletta transform students at woohoo hooniversity into lazer snifits, implying a more sinister origin for snifits. Seeing as snifits can come in the form of sunflowers and cacti aswell, this implies that snifits aren't just shy guys, but a whole group of their own.
So, hear me out. What if snifits are synthetic parasites that take full control over its host and whose preferred host is the shy guy, but can aslo infect other hosts including, but not limited to, cacti, sunflowers and beanbean people. Even after death, shy guys aren't safe as they can still get infected and get turned into snufits. As for who created them? In BIS, fawful seems to use this weird "fawful parasite," which I forgot the name of, to "fawfulize" many of bowser's minions. So maybe the snifits were some kind of prototype fawful created. Or maybe bowser created the snifit parasite with dark magic and used it to enslave the entire shy guy species into bowser's army. I might be going insane.
I thought the mask itself had something to do with if something was a snifit. Shy Guys seem to have theirs for a reason. Luigi did look rather scared, but if you remove a Snifit's mask will it turn back into it's original form?

Fun fact! The reason that Shy Guy voice lines sound like they're saying "hey ho!" is because their Japanese name is "Hey-Ho"!
8:22 Most of the instances of Shy Guy names not making sense are just flubs from the English localization teams. The "Zeus Guy" dilemma didn't exist in Japan. The martial arts guy's original name is "Karateka" and Scorchit's original name is "Fire Mucho". ("Mucho" being the original Japanese name of the Snifit species.)

Most of these varients lead me to believe that Shy Guys function like Wario in the Wario Land series where they turn into different forms just by taking cartoonish ailments or injuries.
I admit, it'd be really cool if that became a legitimate mechanic for them if they ever show up in a Mario platformer again.

Here's an obscure Shy Guy not mentioned in this video, but it's probably because this type of Shy Guy doesn't have an official name.
In Bowser's Inside Story, there's an enemy called the Sniffle Thwomp, a Thwomp who's sick with a cold. For one of its attacks, the Thwomp falls over & faints, then two Shy Guys wearing all white clothes rush in & carry the Thwomp across the screen, ramming into you to deal damage.
Once again, these Shy Guys don't have official names, but I'd imagine they're similar/related to Medi Guys.
Barbecue Guy was/is my favorite enemy in Yoshi's Story. He only appears in Magma Castle. There are two of them together, and you have to walk in between their flames. I used to call them the BBQ Boyz when I was a kid.
The Melon Guy/ Stretch Guy should be in every single Mario platformer going foreword. It is just glorious.
It should be noted that Melon Guy is so named because he shoots watermelon seeds when you squish him, I think the implication is that there is a watermelon inside of him?
Pretty sure laundry guy is just a stronger variant of pry guy. He’s reading “your dirty laundry” which is a phrase that means like mean things or secrets you don’t want people to know
It's funny you mention not realizing that the ghost snifits from SM64 were snifits. Earlier in the video you blew my mind when you mentioned that bandits are shy guys- I have NO idea how I've gone 25 years without realizing that, but yep. Great video, love your channel.

There is one Shy Guy you didn't mention from Yoshi's New Island called Fake Yoshi. He actually has the unique ability to turn into Yoshi and mimick his movements perfectly. I also think he might be the rarest non unique guy of all since there's only 3 of them in the series each appearing in the same level.
I may not be a certified Shy Guy, but as a Ryguy, I have felt some sort of a connection to those dudes..

I like to believe the Anti-Guy’s voice is just a more evil/demented version of Shy Guy’s voice, also if the bring him back I like to believe he would either have dark energy emitting from him, or his outfit would be like a power suit.
Shy Guy is my go-to character whenever he is playable. Luigi and King Boo/Boo are also my go-to characters whenever they are playable. I wish Goomba was more playable. I know he is in one of the later Mario Parties.

This a great video but you forgot some species. Like one of the most iconic and important Bandit subspecies that have been instrumental to the growth of the Mario franchise as a whole: Grunt. Which are orange robless really weird looking bandits with teardrop-shaped heads that wear Spiny Shelmets

🤓Watched the whole video, and I'd like to add a particular Snifit to the roster: In Mario Party 3's Duel Mode, Princess Daisy has Snifit as her preferred partner. Everyone else has one partner representant of their species like Mario/Koopa, Yoshi/Boo, Wario/Bob-Omb etc. - That Snifit was unmentioned here.
Since Princess Peach has THE Toad as a partner, and Mario has THE Koopa, maybe Princess Daisy has THE Snifit? What do you think?

Excellent overview except in fact 2/10 fails to distinguish between "Fly Guy" (core Mario series) and "Flying Shy Guy" (Yoshi's Island series), the Smash series even makes a note of having Fly Guys and Flying Shy Guys on different stages and treatz then independently...
If you think the Antiguy is crazy, you should see what the master quest version of Paper Mario has in store. In addition to Antiguy being stupidly strong (stronger than the vanilla version), he's also accompanied by 007 Guy (AKA James Bond Guy), Inferno Guy, Dandy Guy, and Malpractice Guy. In the pit of 100 trials, there's also a mysterious yellow shyguy that has a creepy smiling mask before you face the boss in the final floor. That's another crazy one in the master quest version of the game.
I have a feeling Booster is what sort of gnarly human character hides behind the mask of the Shy Guy...

In the video game Dwarf Fortress someone made a mod that revamps the entire game into a Mario setting, where you can play as Toads (and Yoshis), Koopas and Shy Guys. In order to trick the game into making it so that they'll wear masks at all times, the Shy Guy script has it listed that they have genitals on their face. Not wearing a mask too long causes them to die of embarrassment.
