CRV Startup rattle is due to the VTC actuators failing, which control the variable valve timing. Brother’s Honda did that for like 120k miles though, and nothing serious ever came from it. Still ran when he sold it at like 260,000 miles

Those gens of X5s loved coolant & chew through timing chain guides… BMW never learned how to build a V8 correctly… the new ones have the “hot vee” with the internal turbos… they love oil and coolant 😂. But they are realllly fun when they aren’t needy (which is always)
@@MiaFins haha no, they learned!!! They are in automotive business!! They test each part under freezing Antarctica, or burning Sahara while putting it through millions of revolutions and stress tests, they would make it to last a century if they wanted!! They make it on purpose to fail! Various hoses, parts on my bmw were literally made to last or be tight for couple of years or 4 until warranty and then to Feed their service and parts division. Little detail last time I wanted to change small pipe, same part made by same factory costed 1.5$ and with bmw sticker 45$!!!! Exactly this difference!! I can supply evidence if you think I exaggerate. Anyhow, it's all made to fail and ppl tolerate it so that's what you get
The Car Ninja said he could square it away "for around $3k." If that's the case you'd have an easier time selling it for $7k with everything addressed or maybe you could sell it with the understanding that the Car Ninja will do the fix for the new owner. That timing chain issue would worry me the most along with the blue smoke out the back when you accelerate hard.

@Martin Yeah and the Corolla is not a "truck". It's a sedan or a saloon, depending on what part of the world you are from 🙂 In my part of the world (South Africa), a "truck" is the same thing as a "lorry", three metric tons and up load capacity. A light commercial vehicle that has a load bay is called a pickup. In the local vernacular it is a "bakkie", from the Afrikaans for "bak" (load bay) and the suffix "ie" which makes it diminutive: Small load bay. Distinguishes it from a lorry that has a large load bay. But a Corolla is not a Bakkie. It's a sedan, a passenger vehicle. And I know the world is fond of beating on the Corolla for being boring, but there are some true gems if you dig a little. Back in the day Toyota frequently did that: Put a large engine into a smaller sedan. We used to have a hatchback known as the "conquest" (a continuation of what was originally the starlet in Japan), with the 1.8 liter 4A-GE engine. 85kW in an 800kg shell, back in the 80s. This Corolla is to me an example of that same sort of recipe, with a stick shift too boot. (Stick shifts are standard where I live, but apparently in America it is rare enough that people consider driving stick a skill 🙂).
The Corolla is definitely the best of the lot. We purchased a new S model in 2010, and gave it to our son for a college car in ‘14. He still drives it every day and loves it. Great little car.
I remember when the X5 first came out as the E53. BMW hired a bunch of movie directors to make short films using the X5 and other models like the 5 series. They drove the X5 through a river, that was pretty cool. They starred Clive Owen, who played a driver for hire. They were so popular that the driver for hire thing was reworked and turned into the movie The Transporter with Jason Statham playing the driver instead of Clive Owen.
The noise starting the CRV is a well known issue. The variable timing cog, has a pin so it starts cold in a fixed position until the oil pressure builds up. This pin gets stuck, usually because owners do not change the oil as frequent as they should. At most this problem is solved changing the variable timing cog. It does not harm the car driving it like that but it might stretch the timing change a bit in the long term
I have a 2013 CRV that has the VTC actuator problem. Mine started later than usual because I change the oil every 5k. But it doesn’t really hurt anything
My Dad’s 2008 Accord makes that exact sound on cold startup, came here to say he’s been driving it for years with that sound no issues. 230k miles running strong
@@BenjaminInLosAngeles Toyota's are awesome vehicles! I currently have two Siennas and the newest one (the one I drive) has 248,000 miles and runs and drives like new!

This was actually a very informative video on what is going on rt now in the car market most people have no clue what covid has done to us with everything in this country what a shame
Here in Europe it’s been like this for the last 7-8 years, customers are completely bonkers. They all want a car for a Hoovie price but nobody wants the hoovie problems, buying a “good market value” 8k car for 4-5k and then complaining that’s not a collectors car in mint condition. I quit the business after 15 years. At first you got 90% normal thinking customers and 10% idiots who does not know how the world works, nowadays it’s the other way around and there just simply isn’t money to be made anymore when you want to sell decent good cars.
Are you telling me that after all these years I’ve been watching Hoovie, he was actually capable of doing a comprehensive inspection BEFORE actually buying the car?? lol
Hey Hoovie hope you see this in time that cr-v is a vtc actuator . The noise sounds bad but according to Honda techs I talk to its pretty harmless. That thing is definitely sellable

Interesting fact on the Honda four-cylinder from that year. There was a class action lawsuit against Honda for failed VCT actuator. Honda out of kindness offered to rebuild the problem motors at no cost. I know this because Honda rebuilt my motor in my 2008 Honda Accord four-cylinder, that I bought used from a vw dealership. Honda gets a huge thank you from me. my car also had 100,000 miles on it when they offered to rebuild it only thing I had to pay for was a new timing chain because I stretched it from low oil
Out of kindness...lol. No car manufacturer does anything out of kindness. Either they fix the problem or they have a PR nightmare on their hands, simple as that. Glad they did though, that's awesome.
Stretched timing chain from low oil? Don't you think the other failure by any chance had something to do with driving around with too little oil in the engine too? LOL.

@@NaNa-wj8tw That is true. Also that German cars are many times seen as "exotics" in the states, I think? So the service and parts prices are exotic too. Many times it's the same in Europe with American cars; there's not too many of them and many shops don't like to touch them. And no, I'm not an BMW fan. I have had a couple of them, but not a fan in general. I've had American cars too, and many Germans.
I bought an 2018 X5 in August 2018 and it had been to Mannheim auctions 11 times in 2021 before it sold. Prior to that it sat with a wholesale dealer in PA for 3-4 months, before they sent it to auction (foir the first time). It had a clean CarFAX, and no rust or damage. ...... When I got hold of it, it was 100% fully functional - _everything_ works, and other than 1 tiny stone chip on the hood and some minor rubs on the front bumper, it is totally clean. I took it to a local non-franchise BMW specialist, and they confirmed that it is 100% fully operational, no issues, no concerns. Six months later it is _still_ 100%, no issues, and just about to get it's first service, at the non-franchise BMW specialist. Why did nobody want it? Dunno, beats me. The only think I can think is that it's the more thirsty V8 version, but that is what I was looking for, and it drives _very_ nicely!
@@aussie2uGA I understand .... which is why I paid $2,000 for an add-on, 5-year, 60,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. It is the first time I have ever paid for an additional warranty of _any_ sort for _anything, but fugured that in this case, and at that price, it would pay for itself with a couple of minor issues, or one moderate one, and in the event of one major issue the warranty would prove to have been the bargain of the century!
So true. You're literally devaluing your vehicle every single time you transport a canine in it. Ever detail a car interior that carried one for a few years? They're never the same- buyers can always tell.
Guess I was just really meticulous with my car or the interior just held up better. I had a dog for 14 years and he lived through two cars and neither one looked anything like that. I put a towel down in the seat he sat in so that probably helped a lot. Plus I vacuumed it twice a month usually.
CRV’s are hot sellers & it’s hard to find one for a reasonable price with low mileage. Every auction I’ve been to they sell for top dollar in pretty much any running condition.

The xrs doesn’t have a Camry , or scion engine . They made them for 1 year only , it has the 2zzgte engine , it’s a 1.8 liter vvtli engine . It’s the only engine Toyota made that has cam lift , it kicks in at 6000 rpm’s . It’s the same engine that’s in the Lotus Elise . Only the Elise adds a supercharger .

I love the fact that old BMWs that require lots of maintenance are still such a shitshow that even in today's market you can't sell them. I mean that's really saying something.
@@papa_pt While you are absolutely correct about that, you can get an old kicked around never maintained toyota or honda and get it fixed up nice for little cost and effort. But that's not what BMWs are made for, they are made to be an amazing vehicle for at least around 100k miles as a luxurious sporty experience. If you want a car that can go high miles and last forever and are cheap to maintain that's what toyotas and hondas are for. They each do what they were designed to do well, if you can afford a nice vehicle like that, chances are you aren't trying to squeeze 300k out of it with minimal costs along the way. That's where people make the mistake of buying old high mile ones that need some work just because they love the car so much, but they really can't afford to maintain and fix it. Unless they are lucky and get one well maintained that never has any serious issues for many years even with high miles, which does happen, it's happened to me, then they end up with a nightmare that slowly eats their money and can never stay fully maintained that maybe the average person wouldn't realize if all they knew was BMWs are cool and fast and hey look I can afford that high mile one for only 5k, I guess I can afford one! They don't understand what car guys know, that just because you can buy an old bmw doesn't mean you can afford one. And I know my original comment was a little harsh but to be perfectly honest I saw the opportunity to leave a comment early after the video was posted and knew that if it was engaging enough that I might get some reactions because I know it is a sensitive subject and painting all old bmws as money traps is over generalizing because there are many excellent old reliable bmws out there. When I said old what I really meant was not classics, but "modern" old cars like ones that have recently been hitting end of life from miles and years, so ones from the last 10 or 15 years that have a lot of miles and need maintenance. Because everybody knows how FUN it is to work on modern BMWs c: just ask the Wizard he will let you know what a rewarding experience it is to service them xD

Im fixing up an X5 at the moment here is Australia. It's a great car now. I bought it with a few problems for 2000aud and have spent around 1000aud on repairs and have a nice driving example now. It usually always comes back to maintenance
Time to move those to Florida or many other states where there is no yearly tax on them. Never heard of yearly property taxes on cars until I moved to the Southeast.
In GA you pay a lump sum on the “market value”, I put that in quotes because nobody knows where they arrive on said value. Every vehicle I’ve registered here has had an absurdly inaccurate market value that I’ve had the misfortune of paying taxes on rather than the true purchase price.
It's more common in Republican states because they have lower average income and need the tax money more. When I lived in NY I didn't pay it and now in NC I do.

@@aussie2uGA there’s a few that were very unreliable but after 2006, the base models became extremely reliable. That Corolla is a gem! And it will probably still be running down the road after the rest of those rigs have been recycled into Kias
@Martin it’s only 2wd. Who wants a 2wd truck?
Yeah that car will outlive euroasian bob AND his kids.
I had a Diesel version of that car. Stick shift. Came from the lower profile wheels than the entry models (advanced spec). Best car I ever owned.
@Martin Yeah and the Corolla is not a "truck". It's a sedan or a saloon, depending on what part of the world you are from 🙂
In my part of the world (South Africa), a "truck" is the same thing as a "lorry", three metric tons and up load capacity.
My girlfriends Toyata makes the same noise on start up the dealer said the same thing dont worry about it.
Worked at Acura for 10 years. Came here to say exactly that about the CRV. You summed it up perfectly.
I have a 2013 CRV that has the VTC actuator problem. Mine started later than usual because I change the oil every 5k. But it doesn’t really hurt anything

Yanks don't do diesel German cars which is the crux of the problem. The petrol versions are shite.
Looks like the Alfa might need some new ignition coils and/or plugs with that flashing engine light at high load/high rpm conditions.
Yup! Was actually taking it to the dealer after moving the X5.
Best hoovie video in ages. Down to earth. Time with friends. Much enjoyed. Keep up the good work Tyler.
They get a bad rap for very expensive repairs so people are a bit gunshy to try.
7:20 Standard "Dog lover's" car: Not even smokers destroy a car interior as badly as people who keep their dogs in the cabin.
As the rarity and cost of cars go up, the value of collecting cars and stripping them for their still useful parts will go up as well.
Hoovie, when you’re looking at Dodge Neons of that generation, “only” and “106k miles” should not go in the same sentence together.

Meanwhile, look at e39 M5's market value...
well there's a difference between old, well maintained BMWs and old POS kicked around in the dirt, 15k mile oil changes BMWs
You base that off one anecdotal video?
Lol

@@aussie2uGA there’s a few that were very unreliable but after 2006, the base models became extremely reliable. The reason they had some unreliable cars is because they are constantly innovating and figuring things out. Toyota are reliable because they don’t innovate mechanically. BMW has stopped innovating so much with internal combustion engine so they became more reliable.
He buys the absolute worst examples available to him. It's the whole point of the channel.
Buy hoopties, repair them, sell them.
Buy any car used car that wasn't maintained well enough and you'll be sorry. Yes, even Toyotas.
I gotta say, this is the best Hoovie video in quite a while...
Man, I'm looking at what that X5 needs and it'd about have to be free to be able to sort it out without exceeding its worth, even if it goes to a shadetree mechanic that can do most of it. The E39 I got back from the brink had fewer obvious things wrong than that X5 and I'll be lucky if I break even on that! I really hope the X5 can be put back together, it's a bit rare, but I bet it'll still be a tough sell.
Finally a Ford Fusion on this channel
Those Honda Elements are selling for CRAZY money right now, even with a crapload of miles.
Really? Elements near me go for $800 to $1500 when they need an engine or transmission. I gotta think about this.....🤔
@@joeblack007 Anything in decent shape with under 150k miles is like $6k-up. Under 100k miles is $10k-up.
@@MiataChannel In which state? I am about to retire early. 😅😅
@Joe Black Those are the cheapest prices I see nationwide. If you live in the rust belt probably a lot cheaper. Where I live those prices are low.
@@MiataChannel There is a 2003 near me now for $1500 with 150K miles. The two front doors and the hatch is dented. Needs a good detail but runs and drive. I am in NJ. What is this car worth fixed in your state?
That X5 is gorgeous.
$1000 over MMR in a sealed bid auction? Oh how times have changed.
Can we just appriciate Hoovies house garage? Those lifts are incredible!
It’s crazy how inflated the used car market is.
Thanks Joe Biden

Of all the characters you have introduced us to on your channel, UrinationBob is my favorite. I feel like I could actually buy a used car from him.😁
Having the dealers license also saves time at the DMV. Where I live two desk positions are walk up, where everyone else is taking a number and reading a book...
Bob with the perfect roast at the start there
I have the trim piece for that Element. If you buy an Element, make sure to buy an Aerogenics catalytic converter guard. The Elements are targets for cat thieves.
Reminds me of when I got in the back of an acquaintance's car with the bloke's dog. I nearly chundered, but fortunately I could wind down the window an stick my head out (like a dog*). So watching Hoovie in the barf-mobile "shed": fun? Hell yes! * see Superfast Matt driving his Ejag without mirrors.
