I am a dealer tech for Mercedes, and I just want to say you nailed it on the head with your rant on dealers. I’ve been in the game over 19 years now, and I can honestly say it’s a different world! All the dealers are corporate owned now. The pride in ownership of these dealers is gone. They are ran by bean counters and under paid “ managers” that couldn’t care less about the customer. The pressure to produce, and lack of training is a killer.

It's a US-made euro-bad-car, that's even worst, American workers can't assemble that mess, not even the Germans can, and maintain it? takes some patience to do it 19 years, well done, feel good for your work

I do my own work on my Benz. I trust my Mexican to change my hoses more than any dealer in San Diego. Specialty Benz repairs suck too. They couldnt even replace the purge valve hose when it tore before they had it for a week while doing my tranny mount and brake flush.

Gonna say, I owned one of these X5 models bought of my cousin's wife after he died. Loved the engine, terrible fuel economy and breaking plastic parts, etc. What pissed me off was the battery went bad and it is located in the back under the spare, under bolts. Sold it for 2000 and bought a Tacoma and Benz instead.

@@markstevens1729 Yet again, we have another American who only likes GM and Ford products. Cars like these are not cheap, they need preventive maintenance which is more expensive than other brands and they also have maintenance intervals, which are made for reliability reasons - you don't want to slack on them. These cars depreciate and when you have Ferrari-priced maintenance in a Toyota-priced car, you're asking for it. People buy these cheap, except cheap maintenance prices, but realise they can't afford it, so the cars break and break and come to a point where it costs an arm and a leg to fix and get right. They then get sold on and bought by people like Hoovie, who rants about their reliability. Smh American people...

The video even shows how dumb people can be, you take it to the dealer and they say it’s good to go and things that have been checked and in reality it hasn’t, so the owner is expecting a good car. These cars are for people with money and who’s familiar to the car. People love to get their opinions rushed on here as if BMWs 3L - 6L performance calibrated engines are suppose to be as simple and cheap as the a 1.5L-2.5L Toyota/Honda/ economy focus or whatever motors, ridiculous.

After you own them and they are out of warranty, you then see why they lost two world wars. My 2002 330CI was gorgeous, until the sunroof broke, the electrical issues, and the interior glue started falling apart. The sagging headliner was a sign that the car needed to go. I used to work for a service centre and have been around mechanics most of my life. The book rates are weird. Some "times" are so easily beatable it's comical while others are so tight it's comical. Right now, I know a mech who charges $1200 for a 4 wheel brake job including rotors (not calipers) for a Ford F150 pickup and the dealer charges $1400 per axle. If there are no issues the parts cost him $300 and he can bang it off in about an hour.

Perhaps your onto something BUT if dealers only sold cars lots of them would close down because many break even with the combo one or the other they would die slowly. But I do agree with the current stigma that is car dealer ships they should separate them so they don’t constantly make your car sound like it’s so bad and junky that it’s time to get a new one.
You don’t understand how many times I hear ppl say “yeah I took my car to the dealer and they say it’s so bad I need to get a new one, it’s time” that’s like a car dealer that doesn’t have a “sale” going on, when isn’t it “time” to get a new car lol if the dealership tells you your car is tok far gone and it’s time for a new one then immediately ask for the print out of what’s wrong and proceed to take it to another repair shop immediately

@@B0xlife1 I don't think dealerships barely make money selling new cars, I don't know if they changed things but 20 yrs ago when I went to mechanics school, my small business management teacher who used to sell caddys, as part of his class curiculum used the example of this chevy dealership on the high way it was huge.
He said the guy who opened it in the late fifties grew it to it's size he managed it and even sold cars into his seventies until he died. His two sons inherited it but wanted nothing to do with selling cars so they hired someone to run it and the only time they stepped foot in there was twice a year to collect a high six or low eight figure check.
He explained how they got that check was every car that gm sent the had a certain amount of extra money set aside, say 1000 bucks a vehicle. Everyday it remained unsold gm would deduct a certain amount and when it sold they would get that extra money on top of the mark up for the car, if they were to have a high turn over like that place did they could earn millions a year. They may have changed how they do it now after the bankruptcy and all.

The colour is slightly off and the black pillar trims are a Matt finish, but the rest of the car has gloss finished trims!

If you want to collect good Hyundai’s they should all be 2007-2009. They had a 3 year run just building bulletproof fantastic cars for a great value. Then they started trying to get fancy and the reliability suffered. I work on these things for a living and have owned 2 Tucson’s (1 2.0L and 1 2.7L). 2 Santa Fe’s, both 3.3L’s. And a Veracruz with the 3.8L. They’ve all been high mileage units and they’ve all been unbelievably reliable.

Why you’d buy one of these over an early XC90 V8 is just…baffling. $7500?! For THAT?! In THAT condition?! Add in the $3-4K in repairs and you have a $11,000 X5. Insane.

My family bought a xc90 t5 awd from new in 06 and it was absolutely fantastic and we put over 245k miles on it and it survived me and my 2 siblings and a lot of snow and commuting. The v8 is amazing but they tent to eat transmissions. Otherwise, the t5 is the reliable xc90

    • @phishphood423
      @phishphood423 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@12pagani T5 is great! T6 was the real transmission eater though. The V8 was worst in the early years from what I hear, but got better as the TF80SC transmission was improved. I love my T6 though, even if it has a time bomb transmission. 270 inline six ponies and 280 lb-ft from 1800 RPM. 0-60 is slow, but 60-100 sure isn’t!

It's absolutely essential to have an honest independent mechanic if you own any imports. My girlfriend has a 2010 C250 Mercedes and when i took it to him for the first A service, he took a look at the mileage and the condition of the oil, just reset it and kicked me out. No charge. Just had first brake pads done all around and his estimate was little less than half of dealer using OEM parts.

    Another great vid Hoovie.
Interesting to know that even getting a car inspected for seemingly simple stuff is not being done very well.
I work in a way, way different business and am finding the same thing--basic shit that easily can cost 2-4 times more in the end --if it is missed in the first review. I no longer--ever--take the first opinion as I was able to do just a couple of years ago.
A lot of amateurs out there, but now all at once.

As someone who is a Flat rate Mercedes tech . You nailed it . I love helping out people with older Benz’s . Other techs don’t care and will price out jobs at obscene labor rates to make money . If they don’t sell the job then they don’t care. There is also the other side where if I see someone bring in a car that is clapped out , I do not want them to waste money on it . Hoping that a $10,000 estimate will scare them out of it and they can get a car that isin’t a money pit.

I have personally removed and installed a V8 in one of these E53, X5's and without a hoist it is a MONSTER job. A very well made vehicle, but very time consuming to dismantle all the components to free the engine. The V8 is a very snug fit on the steering rack etc and its a slow, patient process.

When I left the Honda dealer in 2019 the highest paid tech there was at $21.50/hr. That’s what guys made in the 80’s. I now work at an independent shop and make more than I ever thought I would.
