Sam a safety tip for you........when your putting that much pressure on a winch cable put a wet bath towel on it about middle ways it could save an eye, cheek bone, front teeth or something more important........something i learned while in the tow business.......Thumbs Up
You're the man... just got it done last night. Was able to get the starter swapped out pretty easy through the wheel well. Thanks a bunch I never would have thought of that.
You and Doug from DIYFFERENT, are the most accomplished DIYers that I have ever had the pleasure of watching. To be so young and well versed in carpentry, electrical, mechanics. Just jack of all trades. Such a pleasure to watch.
Thank you for saving me hundreds and getting unstuck from side of raod. I could even find the starter until this video. Still gonna need to have replaced but a little tap got her started. Thanks bud.
After you get the tire off all you really need is a 13, 10 and 16 millimeter some extensions and a universal and it pops out through the wheel well. I did it in my driveway it takes a couple hours.
Sam, in 2004 I replaced the water pump On a 92 Jeep Cherokee, in NJ, in November. 2 days before a major snowstorm hit. I had to remove ( then replace) the Serpentine belt as well, but for that I ended up having to get my trucker friend to help because I didn't have the strength. That was THE LAST car I mechanically worked on. I was frozen, my hands, and face were frostbitten and the damn tools were so cold, they burned. Now, I pay mechanics, who have lifts, hydraulics and better tools then I....and besides, now I am too damn OLD!! Good Job!
Glad you put this video up. I miss working on vehicles. I wish i could still work on them but physically because of my injuries from an accident i cant.
I like the way you both keep it real. And as always I am praying for you and your family for safety, strength and progress on whatever the needs of life exact.
Changing the starter in an 09 grand cherokee with AWD takes 20 minutes if you put the driver's side front tire on the ramp, leave the other side on the ground. This shifts the engine weight to the passenger side of the car and gives you that 1/4" to 3/8" needed to slide the starter out from the front or rear, your choice. You don't need to drop the manifold or the driveshaft or remove the wheel and wheel well like others recommend on YT.
Be glad, so glad you don't have 2014 WK2 4x4. I just did mine and THAT was a true nightmare. If I could have done it by taking the front drive shaft out I would have been thrilled. The shop calls out 10 hours, and that's with a lift and a tranny jack to drop the t-case, I take that back, it's more like hell than a nightmare. Thanks for letting me vent
I do enjoy watching those two kids play , I'm old and they remind me of how I use to play when I was a kid. Played so much until my legs hurt at night!
Sam you did good! You showed perseverance! And saved a ton of money! Great to see the little guys helping out. They are learning from you! Valuable life skills! 👍💪
I just replaced my wife's today, 2006 Grand Cherokee 3.7, thankfully I have air ratchets and it only took me about 45 minutes, if you remove the underbody shield it makes it alot easier and the starter comes straight down.
Yep my WJ broke down as I was at the auto parts store buying a mat so we can work on the starter tomorrow. I’m thinking tow it and have someone else do it.
I've done this job on a 5.7 hemi, and I need to do this again, because my starter is dying. It CAN be done without removing the driveshaft. This is how I did it, however without some cuts on my hands.
Very enjoyable for the viewer Sam, and for the boys. You are very creative in finding solutions to problems along the way. I liked the tool pick up game at the end as well!
My son just did the same job in March on his 2005 Jeep. He ended up removing left front wheel and well liner and bringing out the side as well. He did not know what to expect on pulling the driveshaft so wanted to avoid the possibility of damage to it. I see no advantage in moving the starter motor to the driver side. Liked the idea of the winch cable.
I truly hated my Dodge caravan, we put 4 water pumps on it in 10 years and the starter also went out stranding me at work. Hubs came and in 20 minutes, in my work parking lot, replaced the starter. I feel for you! I truly do. The Dodge went to the scrapyard for $103! We now have matching year 2001, Tahoes and we love them. Funny, mine is white and his is a navy blue, both 2001 and both made in Arlington TX bought 3 years apart. Yes, some things are best left to paid help! All 4 starters were but at least one was still under warranty!
Way to trust your son and also give him some responsibility! I'm sure lots of people will freak out that you trusted him. My father had me doing all kinds of things that are "unsafe" now, he just made sure I listened and was safe. I one time said when I start making enough money I will pay someone to work on my cars. Well, I make enough now but when I hear the price to change brakes, or most recently motor mounts ($600) I do it myself. lol I guess I am still cheap even though I don't have to be.
Absolutely! He's eager to help so why not let him.. helps me and him. He was also down under the Jeep with me for a while putting it back in and asking what everything was. I complain on this job, but you'll see me doing much more auto work, too. Older vehicles just need them... and our other two are needing things soon. :) You're right about the costs, too! Crazy!
One of my pet peeves. CAR TROUBLE! I hate it because I don’t know how to fix it! Thank God my husband is very good with cars and for stuff he can’t, want, or doesn’t have the right equipment, we have an excellent mechanic! I feel your frustration! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
star date, 3-9-23, currently replacing starter 2006 Grand Cherokee, 4.7 engine. Wish I would have taken it to a shop. PITA big time. At least I ain't the only one working on gravel. Took the two bolts off and was able to turn starter enough to #1 take off heat shield then #2 battery wire. Working on getting ign wire off. Red tab probably broke off by last starter replacement.
Hey you ol'hillbilly, your video was a great help. The starter did come out the wheel well. It took me a day and a half to get it out, and a half hour to put it back in. And I will have someone else do it next time as I am 70 years old...
We had one that i LOVED. It threw the timing chain/belt which cause it to blow the motor. Yours may be newer then the one we had, so it might be a motor they fixed that crap on.
Oh gosh! Had that happen to an old Eagle Talon (like Mitsubishi Eclipse) from the 90s. Timing belt broke and snap went the valves. That was the day we learned exactly what an interference engine was. LOL
I just wanna say my favorite part of this video is seeing a man with his boys involving them even if it’s just helping with tools, instead of telling them to go find something else to do. Your a great father & I wanted to let you know that. Even if you already know it, it’s still nice to hear it sometimes. Your boys don’t know what they have. 😍❤About the video? It’s a piece of cake to get that out of there (not to rub it in), but being a petite woman with small hands definitely has its perks working on my own vehicle. I just wanted to see if anyone found any easier ways to get it out without removing the drive shaft so I do my research before starting anything. Your a "jack" of many trades. However, I'm not so sure that mechanics is one of them! But you certainly are not afraid to try anything and your most entertaining! Love your Channel!!! :)

It's only the awd that's mildly hard if you got a 4x4 or 2wd it's alot easier theres no problem just crawl up to the flywheel and unbolt her take the wires lose and she'll almost fall out
Oh Sam, for some reason it has come to my mind that you are truly brilliant sometimes!!!! (I made it rhyme on accident.) Hey, I tried to write in that special verbose/soliloquy fashion you speak, & that's what I could come up with. The real point is.... Great idea to pull the jeep backwards onto the stands. Great work on the starter, I am so sorry it was a bear to get done. Take care & God Bless.
Hey man, just wanted to say thanks for posting this helpful video for all of us out here. I was looking on your website for the gardener soap, but I could not find it. Is it still available? And if so, could you reply to my comment with the link for it? Thanks!
Another awesome video, I love how you problem solve by thinking outside the box, BUT...if that's Angela's vehicle, I'd think you better get some of her fabulous soap and clean that grease off her steering wheel. You happily exited the car to share your success with everyone and flashed those two solid black oily hands! Hop to it before you get in trouble!
While you were laying on the ground I think I saw the boys dragging a pallet into their fort. 😁 They will miss those barrels when you move them into the green house😞
First. Pray for divine guidance. Second go to the auto parts store ask nicely for then to make a printout of the job along with a list of necessary tools. Third. Take a deep breath and give her hell. . I just replaced the starter and battery on a garden tractor never again. Last summer I bought tools and paid my oldest grandson to replace the starter on my pickup truck. It was worth every penny he asked for . in my case as I get older larger and smarter I finally figured out I ain't no mechanic. Great video tack the rest of the day to relax. Have a great day and a better tomorrow.
