I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.7. I have had it 7 years and it is my baby. These are some common issues. Oil leaks, sensor issues, thermostat, and normal wear n tear. Breaks, battery normal stuff. I love this jeep. It has started in negative 1 degrees and over 100 degrees. They are work horses. This year of jeep is amazing. They also need routine maintenance at this age.
I like this guy, he has already fixed two issues on the jeep with a hammer. Temporary yes, but enough to get the vehicle home or to a garage. Old school mechanics... You go ( Hammer Man ) Thank you,
I have a 2005 Laredo with under 100K miles. Never had any of those problems...but I have replaced the alternator and water pump. On the 3.7 this is super easy and I did it in the Autozone parking lot!
I've got a v6 jeep GC 2007 and I had the second problem. The lights flicker like crazy and I was glad I didn't have someone else fix it. It took 30 minutes and cost me $15 to replace the ignition switch.
Just rolled 140800... FACTORY starter just changed out today. Fuel pump soon as it isn't liking inclines sometimes. Alternator about a month ago... but she's a champ. Even with failing parts, she hasn't left me stranded one time ....knock on wood. Hell of a vehicle :-)
I purchased a 2007 WK Rocky Mountain edition and I enjoy it a lot. I bought from the original owner, they purchased in 2007 for $38,000. I paid $6,500 for it 15 years later. :-)
I have three grand Cherokees and love them one is a 2008,2010 and 2018 they are the best my 2010 has 282 thousand miles and my 2008 has 213 thousand and they run amazingly
I guess I'd call myself a TH-cam Mechanic, thanks to all of the resources. So here's my top 5...2009 JGC, 90K miles. 1. Starters 3 starters replaced, 1st was worn out, 2nd was faulty, 3rd is still working. I can replace these in 15 min now that I'm a pro. Pro tip. If your working on the ground, jack up front passenger side tire higher, it moves arm out of the way, making it easier to slip out starter so you don't have to remove drive shaft or struggle. 2. Water Pump Another easy 20 min job. Hardest part was cleaning the coolant out of the engine bay. I changed serpentine belt too. 3. Throttle body Harder than it needed to be, took about 2 hours to remove and replace. Turns out the connector was bad. 4. Leaking Sunroof Check for videos tips to clean the drains. I modified a plastic ice maker water line to fit an air gun. Works great to snake the whole way down. Flood with degreaser and rinse with clean water. I've been spraying drains with WD40. Didn't solve problem, I don't think glass seals right to the gasket. 5. Rear shaft seal Tough do do without a lift, and hard to remove the old seal with totally destroying it... Pro tip...in two different locations, tap both sides of casing with a punch to guide realignment before disassembly.
We had one, bought new in 2005, and had up until 2016, put 211k miles on it with the 4.7L V8. It never let us down, but we did experience some problems that caused us to put a few thousand into it (front differential, radiator, and EGR valve which is located at the back of the engine bay near the throttle body) the last 2 or 3 years we owned it.
I love my 2006 grand Cherokee Laredo! Have had it for 8 years now but it's starting to do things I am not sure of and of course the back latch and brakes!
My 5.7 hemi had a thermostat stick closed. It built enough pressure to burst a heater hose and drain all the coolant. Those 5.7s can be tricky enough to bleed all the air out of the cooling system. But mine had a significant air bubble in the heater core that did not want to come out. It's all worked out now but definitely took some doing. 👍🇺🇲
I bought an 09 with 90,000 miles. It was cheap, and I do like the look, so I pulled the trigger. What a huge mistake. I've since replaced a blown engine, starter, fuel pump, some fuel module. Had for a year and Ive doubled the sale price with repairs. Could've bought a brand new one the way its going.
I know a guy with an '05 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 5.7L Hemi v8. Currently has 270,000 miles and still runs great, just leaks a lot of oil. These are awesome trucks.
As for the oil leaks it could be coming from the valve cover. Maybe he needs new valve cover gaskets or need both the valve cover gasket and valve cover. Oil leak could be coming from the oil pan itself. He might need a new oil pan gasket or a new oil pan if the leak is from the oil pan due to rust build up over the years.
Too help your ignition switch from going bad cause it’s sometimes a process to fix gotta take most the car apart to get at them but try not to have more then you need on your keychain. I just have my car keys and the key for my gas cap because the weight of the keychain puts downward pressure on the ignition and usually causes the tumblers inside to ware out making it had to start or even stay running. It’s a simple thing we all can do only carry the necessary keys you need.
Thanks for this! I'm looking at a 2005 grand cherokee limited I found a good one with just over 80k miles! Hopefully I'll have it in a few weeks if all goes well
I'm the original owner of a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.7L V6 and I haven't had any issues with it, but I only have 120,000 miles on it. I did have to change the oxygen sensors every 45k miles, but other than that it has been smooth sailing.
Get a good gas cap. I'm having issues with mine. Engine light goes on and off regularly because of the seal on the gas cap. Don't buy from the parts stores. Get a good OEM from Mopar with the tether that snaps onto the inside of the gas door.
Have 4.7 '05 (Canadian) for 11 years and still going (215k miles). Things that went bad: - EGR valve replaced 3 times - Radiator plastic side tank cracked - replaced (also thermostat and both hoses while there) - Exhaust manifolds bolts broke on both sides causing exhaust leaks - twice - Front differential mounts - Both front half-axles - Both UCAs - Both Lower ball joints - Oil pressure sensor - Leaking transmission cooler lines - Ignition switch - Blender door actuator (passenger side) - Driver window sliding off the track - Leaking sunroof - Blower motor resistor - Starter has issues described in video - Front driveshaft grease leaked out - rebuilt the rear side with special kit - Transmission shifter (had to be cleaned) - Left multifunction switch contacts need cleaning every few years (dashboard flickering) - Windshield washer nozzles go very frequently - Backlight for radio/buttons gone - AC leaked out - condenser cracked - Rear differential becomes noisy over time - A LOT of rust underside and wheel arches. All I can remember at the moment. I'm not a mechanic but fixed/replaced all of this myself, except rear diff (too hard / expensive to fix). Precisely followed service intervals. Its easy to find factory service manual online, it has all you need to know. Forums and videos like this have tons of info. Haynes manual for this car is useless. Towing capacity is great, you can pull a trailer or boat. This Jeep shines in winter, feels very stable and solid on snow. Overall very reliable and enjoyable vehicle, looks great and pulls strong. If I had to go back 11 years I would still buy it without a second thought. Now these Jeeps cost nothing, parts are dirt cheap - great SUV on budget. Small mods made life easier: K&N reusable air filter, engine oil drain valve, transmission pan with drain plug (original does not have one, which make tranny service super messy).
Just bought a used 3rd gen. Previous owner didnt know what was wrong with it. New battery and tensioner, runs like new. Thanks for making this video, very helpful.
The WK is far more practical than a Wrangler, it's my trusty XJ replacement, and I've had 3 of those in the past. 16 years later my WK is my longest ever owned vehicle I've driven on a daily basis. With minimal drama or failures, it has never let me down, or left me stranded or even needed a tow truck (yet). All potential repairs are preceded by a subtle noise/clunk warning or an OBD2 code, so you at least can get it fixed before the event occurs. Nothing like preventative maintenance.
I replaced the starter around 100,000 miles. I've replaced SEVERAL thermostats. Granted I'm not running the stock stat, but 180 degree (cooler) ones from auto parts stores. Replaced water pump at 120,000 miles. New brakes/rotors at 125,000. New radiator, fan, hoses at 130,000. New front wheel bearings at 145,000 miles. Thermostat housing at 160,000. I have 170,000 miles now. Long term issues is underbody rust from winters in the midwest winter salt roads (my rockers have rusted away), intermittent electrical gremlins like dash likes flickering (I've had my ignition switch replaced/recalled), and the TMPS and back-up sensors giving errors intermittently on the dash display. But they work most of the time.
I have Jeep 2005 for the last 11 years. Had a problem with the starter once (about 8 or 9 years back). Fixed it by cleaning a cable contact on the starter: there was nothing wrong with the starter itself. And had a problem with the thermostat (twice - both permanently closed and then permanently open). BTW didn't have to disconnect the hose if it was OK, it was sufficient to remove two bolts on the hosing and move it aside with the hose still connected - saves some grief.
I have 2008 WK, the biggest issue has been the water pump, on the 4th one, fails at about 30k miles and start leaking, I have had problems with the starter but it was only the ground wire, you need to clean the spade terminal and put dielectric grease on it, no problem since. Its best to take off the throttle body to clean the backside, its only 4 bolts, torque them to spec when re-installing. The piston seals in all the calipers start going bad at around 5 years, you can check this by jacking up the wheel and see if it turns freely, you can also check the rotor temps after driving with infrared thermometer, they should all be close in temps.
You just reminded me of when I owned my WK and the water pump failed within 30k miles or something. Warranty covered it and replaced it with a better pump. The old one had a plastic impeller, while the new one had a metal one. Bad design for sure.
Thank you for making this video because I found it very informative and it's nice to be aware of what vehicles problem is going to possibly be before you buy one. I'm looking at a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee right now.

@@Ismacobra I have a 2006 jeep grand cherokee laredo, I finally hit 220,000. She ain't a looker, but shes been reliable since we got her around 5-7 years ago(except one week in winter when it suddenly went like -40, killed my battery and starter lol) but as long as you are good with maintenance they will be reliable. Mine is kind of special, it seems at least lol she won't die even though shes been through hell. Could be a luck thing with some being amazing some utterly terrible but I think most of them are built pretty solid.
@@cercigull mine was terrible it was leaking transmission out the front and I had to get the ignition or transmission coils fixed soon after I got it lol
I have a 2006 Grand Cherokee Laredo 65 Edition. There was a factory recall to replace the ignition switch. And, yes, I've also replaced the starter, thermostat and water pump
I just brought a 05 Laredo and I already feel it’s the biggest mistake of my life! I had an 08 3 years ago it NEVER EVER EVER GAVE ME ANY PROBLEMS BUT this 05 it’s stressful I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND! Unless you have thousands of dollars to put into it or u just like working on cars as a project then this is definitely for you!
I have a 2007 limited with 5.7 hemi engine with 212,705 miles on it the real problem about this type of model are the inside door handles are plastic and they break make it hard to get out of the vehicle meaning that you have to roll down and open it from the outside which I'm surprised that Chrysler and jeep never have a recall that could end up being a death trap if anyone cannot get out cause of a fire or collision or stuck underwater and I know some of you have experienced something like this in your Jeep model from 2005 to 2010 and praying that it would never come to someone's getting hurt or death to have something in the news to get their attention
I’m shocked the V6 overheating issues were not mentioned. Looking at these things on the used market and they are all blown head gaskets which needs a new engine due to usually needing to place the timing chain, and rocker arms. I guess if it never over heats you don’t need to worry about this, but it’s a 8-12k repair as of 2024.
The first problem I ever had on my jeep was the code po301 which is cylinder 1 misfire and the shop did my spark plugs and cleaned my injectors and tune up and still got the stalling problem and same code and found out coil pack cylinder 1 is bad and also got that replaced last summer, and recently got new radiator last winter, and kept the oil change and other than that it runs smooth and had the jeep for 2 years
Where I live these are all 3.0 V6 Mercedes Diesels OM642, so engine and fuel system are not an issue, what i have seen so far is that on every singel one that came to shop it had issues with trunk door installation, ex the rear wiper is not working. Also on few i have replaced the motor of the rear wiper since for some reason they stip all the gears Generally a nice car tho, looks stylish and heavy
Another note on the starter problem. That yellow signal wire is too tight and was finding if I moved back and forth I would crank right up. Spliced the wire and redid connection and been rolling for 1yr+ now.
So an ignition switch a fuel pump and a starter. Theses are borrowed time parts for any car. This tells me to go ahead and buy the Laredo its reliable. Thanks 1A.
As a backyard mechanic, I have to say these are all easy accessible parts. These are known to go bad on a lot of vehicles. Might pull the trigger on buying one.
I have 2007 Laredo 2 wd 6 cylinder. Transmission burned up at 60k, had rebuilt, then rebuilt again about 7k later. Also has a habit of spitting out trans fluid when driven alot (like all day). Dealer said just don't have it filled all the way..... Never had any of these issues
+Vöödlandröamer We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Si es como que aceleras y la caja de velocidades de retrasa para tirar el siguiente cambio revisa el nivel del aceite de la caja, tengo una 2010 y tengo que reponer el nivel mas seguido que en cualquier otro vehículo.
My father has a 06 I remember him having a recall on the ignition switch the jeep dealer replaced it the new one you have to push the key in to turn the key they said to not have a lot of keys on the key ring
Missing 1 and the most important of all high mileage WK's is that the computer will fail over time due to excessive work and heat generated by the engine. Solution: Move the computer inside the cabin or change it Since the failure of the computer will cause the electronic systems to fail, the windows to not work and, most importantly, the fans, and that generates heating and eventually damaging your engine.
Awesome - great video and subscribed🤘🤘🤘 I’ve got the hemi and there’s a humming noise coming from a box at the rear of the vehicle that’s in the corner of the rear bumper - anyone know what that is. Cheers
@@thatsright2456 G’day mate - it’s when I have a 3 ton van on the back. If I’m in second gear doing 3500 revs up a hill there’s no noise. As soon as I plant my foot when still holding second going up towards 4000 it comes in. It sounds like it’s coming from the vent box thinga majig in the rear corner of the rear bumper. It’s no problem but it would be good to know what it is. She’s got 50000 miles - cheers.
Sorted 🤙🤙 just got back from another trip and found the problem.......small hole in the exhaust. Trip to the exhaust shop tomorrow. My wife said does that mean we have to get an entire new exhaust - ‘afraid so though hon, things wear out’ 🤣🤣
Throttle body issues seems to be a common problem among many different vehicles. Seems like the industry could solve that. My jeep has abs problems. I was hoping you would address that.
Just hit 196K 2007 jgc v6 3.7 awd I love her so reliable! No problems w my motor or drivetrain she’s well maintenaned all the way around all freeway miles bone stock
Cool Video!! I like the soft-spoken mechanic doing the presentation. Although my 2009 Jeep Cherokee doesn't have any of these issues, it does have an "unknown problem" that no mechanic has yet to figure out. When I am slowed down and ready to make a turn off the highway and into the post office or a fast food parking lot, etc (or just coasting out of a parking space, moving about 5 mph), when I turn the steering wheel almost all the way to the left there is a horrendous cracking sound!! I had the rack and pinion replaced, had the vehicle aligned. It was suggested a U-bolt may need to be replaced? Or bearings? I'm mechanically-challenged so I don't have a clue. I put a little money into it but don't want to keep buying more parts for an issue the service people are only guessing at. The cracking sound is SO LOUD and AUDIBLE, I've witnessed people walking on a nearby sidewalk literally run for cover!!! (My 15 year old said it sounds like a shotgun blast). I really like this Jeep; will ride it until the wheels fall off. (LOL).
I’m a bit challenged too. But, I’m learning as much as I can so I can do repairs and stuff myself. I’m not sure how many things it could be but it sounds like it could possibly be a bearing. With it only happening while turning that should narrow it down. Can you get under there and look at it? Have someone turn your wheel to see if anything is catching under there. It would also narrow it down a bit more if it only does it while turning it one way and not the other. I know this probably isn’t too much help but what i’d suggest is joining a group specifically for Jeep’s. Lots of people are willing to help. Try Facebook or Reddit groups. There may be some groups specifically for the wk’s. If not just look up Jeep Grand Cherokee groups. Good luck, hopefully you get it resolved!
I had the same problem but turning right it sounds like the springs are being twisted and released and makes a huge bang. I replaced the front top strut mount and got a strut mate kit and, that fixed it. Cost $131. Jeep is factory ride height not raised
I own a 06 jeep GCL also , had it for 3yrs now replaced fuel pump, and starter last week but for some reason it hesitate during acceleration i cant seems to figure it out , do you hve a clue ? I was thinking it could be a bad throttle body or cable..
Can you explain to me how I put a new alternator on my 2010 Jeep and now it has a rough idle and putters before starting and my ac blows strong but dies down and starts blowing strong again on and off. Again none of this was happening until I put a new alternator on it
I have a 2006 Grand Cherokee, and am running into a repetitive issue… When I press the gas pedal down firmly to accelerate from a stop, it hurts my passenger’s necks and heads if they’re not pressed against their seat’s headrest… Any help would be appreciated. (SRT8, HHP stage 3 440 stroker/125-shot)
After replacing the fuel pump Im now having a problem with a vapor lock and my new pump is making a ringing/humming noise off and on-is there a way to fix it with a inline check valve or inline filter of some sort. I have to release pressure on the fuel rail to re-crank it after it runs for more than 20 minutes/ which is a possible fire risk.
My husband bought a 2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo, it started up fine when we bought it and it ran fine for a few days then it wouldnt start. We changed the starter but it still wont start, we just get clicks and nothing. There were lights coming on the dashboard, the airbag light was one and other lights coming on, they werent flickering or anything. My mechanic said that the power is not going to the starter somehow, he did some kind of test where he did something with the wires and a screw driver and we dried to crank it and then we actually got a sound like the engine wanted to turn over but it didnt. We were told it may be a computer issue. Its not the key fob either we had a guy come and check that too. Its driving us crazy trying to figure out whats wrong with it, i want to go to a mexhanoc but i feel alittle hesitant.
I have a 2009 that someone stole the keys and stole it. Got it back 2 weeks later no keys and relays all pulled out. Pulled the Tipum disconnected battery and tied pos and neg together to reset. Still have lightning bolt ⚡ and other lights on dash.

We are 2 out of five, 2 radiators 2 water pumps 2 thermostat Windshield wipers relay it make the car go all electric Gremlin mode and the wipers didn't return to park place. Various Suspension parts. And problems with the rear hubs. Starter Throttle body Camshaft and crankshaft sensor 2 speed sensors in 15 years that's good. And oil leaks However I must say the car has been very reliable.
Have the horn blasting just random and it had new relay already was running and stop and now won't start and now that is not starting the starter went bad and when I unplug the air flow idle is trying to start so the last thing is make it fired up im thinking gasoline and a match at this point
The most notorious problem on them was the front pinion nose bushing that breaks on front differential causing thumping noise and trans cooler lines leak transmission fluid.
always carry a bungee cord in every vehicle. bungee your key to start position so you can hammer the starter yourself. If its your solenoid, screwdriver the posi terminals together till it fires.
I have a 2007 Jeep Laredo. I have a dead battery issue like every Monday after parking the vehicle from Sat. My charging system check and it's ok. Nothing is been left on the jeep . Domt know what happen ung . Can you advise .
theres a starter in the fuel tank? thats new.. when have they started doing this?? edit: @ 4:44 you want to replace the hose thats on the thermostat, especially if the thermostat is at any stuck position.
I've got a 2007 Grand Cherokee with the Hemi and I'm getting a P0884 code. I replaced the computer, it's driving then kinda jumps out of gear then goes back into gear. Do you have any experience with this particular problem ? Any help would be appreciated.
I own a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lorado with roughly 155 k mileage. Recently I've been getting a transmission warning light saying that my transmission is overheating I've tried to check the oil level but the dipstick seems to be sealed what can I do about this. What problems would cause a transmission overheating. This only happens when I'm idling for about 10 or 15 minutes while running the air conditioner. Thanks Kevin
My 08 jeep grand Cherokee with the 3.7 V6 is a great car bought it two years ago with 129000 miles and now it's got 210000 miles. Yes I drive my car to extreme lengths but hey what are cars for? For some reason my throttle control light comes on bit when I turn the car off and turn it back on the light goes off? The car starts fine and runs great no issues at all....should I be worried?
Let’s not forget leaking evaporator cores, blend air door motors that crap out prematurely, evaporative emissions leaks, the worst electrical wiring in the industry as far as brittleness goes, etc, etc. I made a lot of money on Jeep’s, especially Grand Cherokees. When the work they are probably the best snow vehicle made but they are rarely trouble free.
I own a 2007 jeep grand cherokee, I have water on the driver side floor. The carpet has been saturated with water for a few days now. No check engine lights are on and temp has been good. What could it be? KB
Just get a 2008 model with the mercedes diesel. I have one with 295,000 km on it. It hasn't been perfect but I am very happy with it. Avoid the 4.7L V8 at all cost. It has extremely bad fuel economy. As bad as a 2500 gas work truck.
@@thatsright2456 Maybe the newer 4.7's are a bit better. Mine was in an 01 Dodge Durango. It was horrible on fuel and had no power to show for it. Only about 235 HP.
My starter seems to have a dead spot, it clicks, but out of dumb luck I looked at the relay and the previous owner had cut the plastic so it came off like a cap. when I went to put it back I hit the metal strip and the starter kicked. the car started right up, been doing that since only happens sometimes when it lands on that "deadspot". Ever run into this?

If your working on the ground, jack up front passenger side tire higher, it moves arm out of the way, making it easier to slip out starter so you don't have to remove drive shaft or struggle.

Harder than it needed to be, took about 2 hours to remove and replace. Turns out the connector was bad.
4. Leaking Sunroof
Check for videos tips to clean the drains. I modified a plastic ice maker water line to fit an air gun. Works great to snake the whole way down. Flood with degreaser and rinse with clean water. I've been spraying drains with WD40.
Didn't solve problem, I don't think glass seals right to the gasket.
5. Rear shaft seal
Tough do do without a lift, and hard to remove the old seal with totally destroying it...
Pro tip...in two different locations, tap both sides of casing with a punch to guide realignment before disassembly.

Thanks I never thought about that before
I had heard that advice years ago from a mechanic. Thanks for the reminder!
Thanks for this! I'm looking at a 2005 grand cherokee limited I found a good one with just over 80k miles! Hopefully I'll have it in a few weeks if all goes well

Dope name homie
I'm the original owner of a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.7L V6 and I haven't had any issues with it, but I only have 120,000 miles on it. I did have to change the oxygen sensors every 45k miles, but other than that it has been smooth sailing.
Wait till u hit the 200k mark! 🫣but routine maintenance and fix as needed ull b fine! I have 07 jgc laredo just hit 213K!
Things that went bad:
- EGR valve replaced 3 times
- Radiator plastic side tank cracked - replaced (also thermostat and both hoses while there)
- Exhaust manifolds bolts broke on both sides causing exhaust leaks - twice
- Front differential mounts
- Both front half-axles
- Both UCAs
- Both Lower ball joints
- Oil pressure sensor
- Leaking transmission cooler lines
- Ignition switch
- Blender door actuator (passenger side)
- Driver window sliding off the track
- Leaking sunroof
- Blower motor resistor
- Starter has issues described in video
- Front driveshaft grease leaked out - rebuilt the rear side with special kit
- Transmission shifter (had to be cleaned)
- Left multifunction switch contacts need cleaning every few years (dashboard flickering)
- Windshield washer nozzles go very frequently
- Backlight for radio/buttons gone
- AC leaked out - condenser cracked
- Rear differential becomes noisy over time
- A LOT of rust underside and wheel arches.
That’s A LOT to replace
Was it clogged drain tubes that caused the sun roof leak ?

The WK is far more practical than a Wrangler, it's my trusty XJ replacement, and I've had 3 of those in the past. 16 years later my WK is my longest ever owned vehicle I've driven on a daily basis. With minimal drama or failures, it has never let me down, or left me stranded or even needed a tow truck (yet). All potential repairs are preceded by a subtle noise/clunk warning or an OBD2 code, so you at least can get it fixed before the event occurs. Nothing like preventative maintenance.
There was actually a recall for the ignition switch on some of the third generation Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles.

I just got a 2006 grand cherokee overland with the 5.7 and so far i love it definitely let me know any problems
Thank You for 5 Problems Same as 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
I’m shocked the V6 overheating issues were not mentioned. Looking at these things on the used market and they are all blown head gaskets which needs a new engine due to usually needing to place the timing chain, and rocker arms. I guess if it never over heats you don’t need to worry about this, but it’s a 8-12k repair as of 2024.
You can always waste your money on a new and overpriced Cherokee or take care of and fix the one you have, I prefer the latter…
Thanks for great information like always
Also on few i have replaced the motor of the rear wiper since for some reason they stip all the gears

Missing 1 and the most important of all high mileage WK's is that the computer will fail over time due to excessive work and heat generated by the engine.
Solution: Move the computer inside the cabin or change it
Since the failure of the computer will cause the electronic systems to fail, the windows to not work and, most importantly, the fans, and that generates heating and eventually damaging your engine.
