  • Tengboche Monastery is the largest gompa in the Khumbu region of Nepal. It was built in 1916 by Lama Gulu with strong links to its mother monastery known as the Rongbuk Monastery in Tibet. In 1934, it was destroyed by an earthquake and was subsequently rebuilt. In 19 Jan 1989, it was destroyed for a second time by a fire and then rebuilt under the guidance of Late Nawang Tenzing Jangpo, head Lama with the help from the monks and Sherpa community, the Sir Edmund Hillary and Himalayan Trust, the American Himalayan Heritage Foundation and many international well-wishers and volunteers have shown their support in several ways and completely rebuilt in 1993. The rebuilt monastery was formally inaugurated in 1993 in the presents of by then Prime Minister Late Girja Prasad Koirala, Late HH Trulsik Rimporche, Late Sir Edmund Hillary and many other dignities.
