The painting titled “guitar” is accurate but the reference tot he color “gray” doesn’t have to do with the painting. Just because gray is his favorite color.
Brad, don't feel bad for the singer, he ended up hooking up with Winona Ryder, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Christina Applegate, Emmy Rossum, among many other famous actresses. Ol' boy did pretty okay for himself lmao
Damn... I haven't heard that song in ages... Funny how time changes the meaning of a song. When I was younger, all I heard was a upbeat song, almost to dance to. Now when I'm older, this song hits home on a different level...
At least for me, I didn't understand real loneliness until I was older. You can really hear that undertone in this song. Nice storytelling in this tune though for sure.

I concur with listening to the album "August and Everything After". That whole album is great. As a guy who REALLY loves Cake, this is another band with its own sound and fantastic vibes. It was so popular, it almost got OVERplayed to some extent. I still love it. It's an album that is GREAT road tripping music.
Brad did a great interpretation of the song this time. Maybe because it is about a shared experience that duds all have? About Picasso, my take follows closely Brads idea about guys bragging with "fairy tales" to each others. To understand it, one must go back to the whole verse. "... Well, I'm gon' paint my picture". Posing and bragging. Creating another "fairy tale" for others and for oneself. "... Paint myself in blue and red and black and gray". The fairy tale of the star/artist (leadsinger in the Counting Crows band in his case), but he is painting himself. So in the end he is being narcissistic. He begins with vibrant colours, then goes to black and end in gray. Like if he looking at a mirror and changing his mood. "... All of the beautiful colors are very, very meaningful". Being derogatory about the artificially created meaning of colors that he just created in his mind. "... Yeah, well, you know gray is my favorite color". Yeah. Addressing the people that are hearing him. He is showing you that he is not in a good spot. To note that in this line he may be comparing the listeners of the song with Mr Jones. So Mr Jones are all of us. Now we transition to the Picasso part. "... I felt so symbolic yesterday". Self critic. "... If I knew Picasso". If he knew one of those "stars" and was by association looked by everyone. "... I would buy myself a gray guitar and play".That is exactly what he is doing as a known artist/star. A gray guitar doesn't play happy songs.
On an episode of VH1's Storytellers, Adam explained: "It's really a song about my friend Marty and I. We went out one night to watch his dad play, his dad was a Flamenco guitar player who lived in Spain (David Serva), and he was in San Francisco in the mission playing with his old Flamenco troupe.
"that was a beautiful piece of music... it was simple and complex" - Lex She pretty much summed up my thoughts of the Counting Crows in one sentence. They are easily in my Top 5 all time. I've got all of their albums, and there's not a bad one in the bunch. 30 years of music, and they're still going strong.
I loved this first album for sure. I didn’t get into those other albums much…I will say I went to a concert where they put on arguably the worst performance of any band I’ve ever seen. It was absolutely terrible…
@@iamtheking9418 Counting Crows are notorious for being either hot or cold on stage. Some nights the show is amazing, some nights it's bad. If you like the first album, and want a good live album, then I suggest the double album "Across a Wire". One disc is an live unplugged set, and the other is a live electric set... both on good nights. But pretty much every studio album is good. Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings is one of my favorite albums.
Hi loved ur reaction, love this song. Yes .. Picasso has a famous painting called 'THE OLD Guitarist' the guitarist is painted all in blue & black & grey but the guitar is in a bright brown color( so it stands out in the painting & becomes the focal point) So Adam Duritz (the singer) wants to paint himself in those dark (depressing)colors but he wants his guitar to be grey (his favorite color) plus very symbolic of Picasso who had what was called 'The Blue Period' when he was sad & lonely & painted using blue & black & grey with occasional red & brown. Don't want to ramble but it's always good to know stuff & apparently that's what Adam was referring to.✌
The album “August and everything after’ has that track on its a fantastic deep album you should listen too at least once in your life. I’ve listen to it hundreds of times it’s that good.
The song is him singing about how his life would be so much better if he became famous. Ironically when he became famous (largely due to this song), he grew to despise fame, and in turn this song.
Brad, I genuinely feel like you and Lex compliment eachother well. She is the one who seems to have such a strong emotional connection to the music, and you tend to come off as the analyst type. Sometimes it comes off a little cold and uninterested, and I feel bad even saying that. But this reaction was great--from you. I could see your thoughts turning while you were hyper-analyzing, but watching the smiles crack through, Lex's emotional energy seems to have rubbed off on you. I felt like you really felt the song, and imagined the story so well, and it was really cool to see that side of you in this reaction. 10/10 reaction.
Guys, this album is called AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER. This is one of the best albums of the 90s. It is so well written. Adam Duritz is the lead singer. This group was really popular in the 90s. There is some of the most well written songs you'll ever hear on this album. This band hits in a different place. It is well worth a purchase. One of my favorites of all time.
So many great songs from Counting Crows, Anna Begins, Rain King, Round Here, Long December. Tons more. Just can't think of them all. Lol. Enjoy this rabbit hole, you wont be disappointed. Xo

I will never be lonely. Because he has MR Jones with him now. The fact this singer oded should have been a big clue. By the way Mr Brownestone in a famous genre is also heroin. The 80’s and 90’s use to make a lot of music that were dog whistles to heavy drug use.

This was the first CD I ever bought in 1993 and it is still in my regular rotation nearly 30 years later. Literally every track on this album is amazing, S-Tier stuff. Strongly recommend that you check out the album in its entirety, "August and Everything After".
YES! It's interesting reading these comments because for years I've thought this was one of the best albums I'd ever heard. So many others feel the same. It's cool to know I'm not the only one. Its up there. But the 90s added soooo many new genres and music trends that its hard to pick just one for me. It was such an incredible decade of music variety
😊 I remember them! HS years. Great band. Their videos are cool, too. This is alternative or college rock. Jangle pop. Like R.E.M , Gin Blossoms , The Smithereens, Hootie and the Blowfish, and others. Became popular in mainstream during the '90s.

So I *adore* y’all. I stumbled across your channel last week (I was under the weather) and binge watched hours of your content. You have a new fan and friend in Texas. Don’t go changin’ 🥰.
Counting Crows got a bit oversaturated for a few years and became one of those love them/hate them bands. It's lovely to rediscover this song after shelving it for so long. "Long December" and "Round Here" are examples of lyrical poetry at some of it's finest. Thanks for the reaction!
I was in an Urban Outfitters in Georgetown, DC and while checking out there were free CDs on the counter and one of them was the Counting Crows, Mr Jones, so I took that. Had never heard the song ever in my life but I'm all about learning new music and I played this song and it was a love affair ever since. Bought all their albums, saw em a bunch of times live. Great band Adam Duritz has got a great voice.
This song came out when I was in junior high and I remember getting chills the first time I heard it. I loved it instantly, and then this friend of mine made some wise ass comment about Adam Duritz’s voice and it made me like my friend less. It was just so cynical and critical and I was like, something is wrong with your soul. I shouldn’t judge people based on their thoughts about music but I do and I like it and I don’t wanna change.
Counting Crowd came on the scene in the early nineties & instantly injected a raw honesty passion & imagery that pop music sorely needed at the time coming off an ever increasingly glitterized 80s.
I remember my self listening to this song and dancing my heart out in a "Rockeria" (Rock discotheque) on the early 90's, but never really payed attention to the lyrics. Today 30 years later I realize the funny, crative and deep lyrics that this song has. Thank you guys! Cheers from Argentina 🇦🇷
Counting Crows had some great songs: A Long December, Round Here, Big Yellow Taxi (it's a cover, but personally I prefer it to the original), and their cover of the Grateful Dead's Friend of the Devil is fantastic.
@@Chatta-Ortega I never ever had a girl that I didn't have a nickname before but I guess bubbles was probably my favorite hoping I can give my girls at nickname you know what I say bro everyday I right now alright bro
This has been one of my favorite bands for many years. Adam Duritz is one of those rare singer/songwriters who sing with feeling and emotion. Check out other tracks like “Rain King” or “I wish I was a girl “, “Raining in Baltimore” is another gut wrenching song
The lead singer was the bartender at the ViperRoom in LA in the early 90's and was pouring drinks for DiCaprio and Keanu. He finally made it big with this song on the radio when they played it over and over and over. He was one who moved to LA to make it.
The other day Brad said a song was in his opinion what the 90s were all about. For me, this song is one of the "most 90s" songs that always takes me back to high school.
I’m a 46 white guy who loved hip hop and rnb starting in the late 80s. When this came out in 94, I was 16. Although I loved hip hop, alternative was really starting to take over (Cranberries, Counting Crows, etc) and this was undoubtedly new fresh sounds. They have other great songs “Round Here”, “Einstein on the Beach”, etc. Really cool video of you guys
Great band. Iconic song that I heard many times with a happy buzz playing in a bar. Lead singer Adam Duritz wrote the song after his friend Marty Jones but it’s actually about him.
Interesting. Given the ‘I wanna be Bob Dylan’ line, I often associate Mr Jones from Dylan’s song Ballad of a Thin Man, where chorus is ‘Because something is happening here but you don't know what it is Do you, Mr. Jones?’
@@alltogetherfitandproper4252 I believe your correct, Dylan inspired parts of the song. I just know his friend Jones created the base and the hook. This from a 2013 Rolling Stones interview: The inspiration for the song came as Duritz and Jones were drunk at a bar after watching Jones' father perform, when they saw Kenney Dale Johnson, longtime drummer for the musician Chris Isaak, sitting with three women. "It just seemed like, you know, we couldn't even manage to talk to girls, ... we were just thinking if we were rock stars, it'd be easier. I went home and wrote the song," Jones’ dad is a Flamenco guitar player and his dad’s band had played at a bar called the New Amsterdam in San Francisco on Columbus
This band,,i know nothing about,,but I loved this song from the time it first got airplay. When you have yellow,,or red hair,,you hear it all the time,as people refer to you, by your color.
Nearly every song on that debut Counting Crows album is great. Probably also check out Round Here, Perfect Blue Buildings, Sullivan Street, Omaha and Anna Begins.
I saw Counting Crows in summer '97 when they were at the peak of their powers... and they were even better live than in the recordings (with "studio magic" to cover up/polish mistakes). Great show!
This song came out when I was 15 and it was on every radio station and mix tapes for months. Watching you both discover it for the first time just gave me the hugest smile. Thank you.
It's not just the Sha la la's in this song, but the singer is flat-out imitating Van Morrison to me. I just can't get past it, and I know that's on me.
I'm flashing back to college! I gotta say, this group live is a wonder to behold. My favorite by them is "Omaha" off this album. Great tune! Adam is a GREAT lyricist. "Stumble out the front door, like a ghost into the fog where no one notices the contrast of white on white. And in between the moon & you, angels get a better view of the crumbling indifference between wrong & right." (Opening lines from Round Here) The Picasso reference is to Picasso's "Blue" period. He painted a work of art of a man w/ a grey guitar.
Classic comment, Brad!! Adam Duritz (the singer) definitely does not stop. Ever. So many of their songs, once he starts singing, there is no break until he is done.
“I will never be lonely” is some of the loneliest shit anybody’s ever written.
I love this song. Peace y’all.
Or "believe in me, 'cause I don't believe in anything...", kinda the same vibe.
Ever written? Yeah, right. 🙄
Smashing Pumpkins vibe for sure. Sounds like some Corgan would say.

“Round Here”, “Long December”, “Hangin Around”. All very good songs by them! Duritz is a great song writer.
Long December. Definitely!!

So many good songs from this band. The whole albums are enjoyable.
I like the cover better than the original too.
I love Joni Mitchell but I have to agree Counting Crows version of Big Yellow Taxi is my favorite.
My girlfriend in the seventh grade her nickname was Bubbles and she had bubbles front and back brother hello everyday is what I say I ride now I right
@@Chatta-Ortega I never ever had a girl that I didn't have a nickname before but I guess bubbles was probably my favorite hoping I can give my girls at nickname you know what I say bro everyday I right now alright bro
You have to watch the original video. The singer is so chill.
This has been one of my favorite bands for many years. Adam Duritz is one of those rare singer/songwriters who sing with feeling and emotion. Check out other tracks like “Rain King” or “I wish I was a girl “, “Raining in Baltimore” is another gut wrenching song
Raining in Baltimore is so great.....90s moodiness in a nutshell lol
I love Raining in Baltimore. Haven’t quite figured out the meaning entirely, but it really sets a mood.
The lead singer was the bartender at the ViperRoom in LA in the early 90's and was pouring drinks for DiCaprio and Keanu. He finally made it big with this song on the radio when they played it over and over and over. He was one who moved to LA to make it.
They do another killer song called Hanging Around, more songs about being a burn out
All those beautiful colors, and a gray guitar, just gets me.
Given the ‘I wanna be Bob Dylan’ line, I often associate Mr Jones from Dylan’s song Ballad of a Thin Man, where chorus is ‘Because something is happening here but you don't know what it is
Do you, Mr.
Rain King is the best song on that album hands down
Agreed! Total album became an instant classic. They are amazing in Live performances as well.
@@callum4450 Agree to disagree. That would only be my 6th or 7th favorite song on the album. But yeah, it's good, too.
@@mokumboi19 dont care
Highly recommend Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby. Beautiful lyrics and moody sound.
The picasso grey guitar references a famous painting associated with depression and Picassos 'blue phase'.
Counting Crows is my favorite band ever. Most of their songs tell a story.
I saw Counting Crows in summer '97 when they were at the peak of their powers... and they were even better live than in the recordings (with "studio magic" to cover up/polish mistakes). Great show!
Such a 90s classic! Love when you guys get the 90s stuff on the channel.
Get it Lex!!!
You Guys are Funky and bring me smiles, Thank you!!
One of those songs I just want everyone to hear, and everyone like.
Brad. The singer hooked up.with a lot of hot celebrities back in the days. Playa playa. I think he did alright. 😆
This whole album is great. I still listen to it regularly.
Their music brings back lots of memories for me. They have lots of great songs. I feel really lucky to grow up in the 90’s.
You quoted Round Here - I know all the words too, what a beautiful, descriptive story he paints with words. I love that! ❤️
Love Omaha as one of the best ones from Counting Crows. Round here was a good one too.
When I was younger this was a fun song I'd jam to. As I get older the sad, lonely part of the song hits harder. I love their song "Long December"
The song is even more enjoyable while watching the video. His energy is very real.
Classic comment, Brad!! Adam Duritz (the singer) definitely does not stop. Ever. So many of their songs, once he starts singing, there is no break until he is done.
Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston agree.
