      DUDE....Just saw a song I hadnt heard in years. 1975. Jefferson Starship(during the 60s they were Jefferson Airplane)....."Miracles"...its a slow song, about love....but its a classic, I know you would dig the tune and the lyrics. and the song strikes such emotion....much like Mr Jones here today.... Enjoy!

    This whole album "August and Everything After" is very special to me. One of my top albums of all time. It's a perfect record. It got me through some hard times in college and holds a special place for me. The song "Anna Begins" will still make me weep 25 years later. Everything on this album is amazing. The hits, the deep cuts, everything is so good.

    This song recounts a night where “Mr Jones” & Adam Duritz (the singer) were hanging out at a bar (New Amsterdam) where Mr Jones’ father was playing flamenco & that Spanish dancer Maria was performing with him. Adam & Mr Jones noticed that the drummer in Chris Isaak’s band was in another part of the room surrounded by women, & they began to fantasize about how cool it would be to break into the rock scene & be popular & surrounded by groupies…it’s basically a recounting of that night, of the dreams of hitting it big….very ironic that a song about making the big time actually became the Counting Crows big breakout hit.

But on Bob's side, Hootie used a whole verse from Idiot Wind without permission. Hootie also said it was unlikely Bob new about the suit. Bob gets money everytime that song is played.

    Best band I’ve ever listened to. They never get the credit they deserve. Check out the acoustic of “Mr Jones” “Omaha” and “Rain King”. When I was 13 I was in Arkansas working construction and my cousin was 17 and we would blast Counting Crows on the way to work and on the way back. Just brings me much to see you cover this! Much love and keep the vids coming!

    I relate to this song so much. Mr.Jones is that alter ego everyone has. That side of you that is energetic, confident and willing to take a chance. Maybe even more when a brother has a couple drinks. And the other personality being a little more timid and reserved. Just a good song about him telling a story about himself and his alter ego "Mr.Jones".

      Dave Bentley no, Marty Jones is a real person and a friend of Duritz. Whole song is based on an actual event.
      “On an episode of VH1's Storytellers, Adam explained: "It's really a song about my friend Marty and I. We went out one night to watch his dad play, his dad was a Flamenco guitar player who lived in Spain (David Serva), and he was in San Francisco in the mission playing with his old Flamenco troupe. And after the gig we all went to this bar called the New Amsterdam in San Francisco on Columbus and we got completely drunk. And Marty and I sat at the bar staring at these two girls, wishing there was some way we could go talk to them, but we were too shy. We kept joking with each other that if we were big rock stars instead of such loser, low-budget musicians, this would be easy. I went home that night and I wrote a song about it. I joke about what it's about, that story. But it's really a song about all the dreams and all the things that make you want to go into doing whatever it is that seizes your heart, whether it's being a rock star or being a doctor or whatever. “

    Your commentary proves the song took you to that place where one doesn't feel secure in one's life(usually as a teenager). I believe their album was, in fact, recorded in one of the Counting Crows member's apartment. They worked like many bands on a low budget, but finally had success. They are, also, constantly recreating versions of their songs in their live performances.

    I remember back in the day seeing them open for the Rolling Stones at Giants Stadium and they were so good. A young band starting out and being able to hold there own in a setting like that was inspiring. Our Friends were sitting in a different section during the show and when we met up afterwards we couldn't stop talking about how great the Counting Crows were. They held their own that night and really opened my eyes to how good their music is.

    "Me and Mr. Jones" This song is a recollection of his diminished sober self and his relationship with his super energized high profile extrovert high self. It's an answer to the question, "Why do you like to get high?" His desire to be loved and "never be alone" is something he doesn't feel he can achieve as his normal self, but for Mr. Jones all these things come naturally. It's very much a Jekyll and Hyde situation.

    My impoverished single mother splurged for Christmas and bought me a CD player and three albums: Counting Crows - August and Everything After, Green Day - Dookie, and REM - Out of Time. Mr. Jones resonated in the way you described.. I dreamed of me (and my mother and sister) being out of this situation. I listened to this album the most of the three. Listening brought back good memories, but hearing you talk about your own childhood brought back more.
    Thank you. I just clicked on this because I hadn’t heard the song in a while. But your reaction isn’t superficial, you shared something real about you and your reaction was as impactful as listening to this song again.That isn’t common. Subscribed.

    They used to do a re-worked version of this song that basically told the story of what happened after they got famous. Everything you talked about, is basically what that version of Mr. Jones is. Adam even ended it by saying "Mr. Jones and me, don't see each other much anymore."

  • @desrever1138
    @desrever1138 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was written by lead singer Adam Duritz and guitarist David Bryson (the other three band members also got composer credits). On an episode of VH1's Storytellers, Adam explained:
    "It's really a song about my friend Marty and I. Those things run from 'all this stuff I have pent up inside of me' to 'I want to meet girls because I'm tired of not being able to.' It is a lot of those things, it's about all those dreams, but it's also kind of cautionary because it's about how misguided you may be about some of those things and how hollow they may be too. Like the character in the song keeps saying, 'When everybody loves me I will never be lonely,' and you're supposed to know that that's not the way it's gonna be. I knew that even then. And this is a song about my dreams."
