Circle of life :). The (older) mother that dies was a stranger down the hall at the hospital. The new (younger) mother cries with joy as her new baby is born. Great PA band, great poetic song
3 years ago my grandmother had a routine surgery, while in recovery she developed a blood clot and would be placed in ICU. A couple days later my sister in law’s water broke. I spent the first half of my day in a hospital in another city about 2 hours away waiting to say good bye to my grandmother with my family. Then drove back home to another hospital. The moment I arrived my niece was born. That’s what this song is about. This song definitely hits harder than it did when I first heard it as a teenager.
It's a bit of a stretch contextually but my 88yo gma got T-boned and required multiple surgeries to survive, she even signed a DNR because she said she was ready to meet God. My mom talked her out of that by reminding her 'if He wanted to meet you, He would've killed you in that crash. You're still here, you're not done.' A couple weeks later, my father-in-law lost his 3 year battle to cancer at age 58. Circle of life for sure, we can't control it or make sense of it. We can just make peace and live good lives while we're here
Ed Kowalczyk has one of the best voices in rock.I think he gets overlooked sometimes. This song is a masterpiece lyrically and sonically.Live is such a deep band. They are one of my all time favorites.
Live is an amazing band from York PA. The story behind the song -Lyrically, “Lightning Crashes” is a meditation on the cycle of life, death, and reincarnation. Kowalczyk’s (lead singer) vision of the song was a hospital emergency room where people died and babies were born, a never-ending transference of life energy: “Lightning crashes an old mother dies/Her intentions fall to the floor/The angel closes her eyes/The confusion that was hers/Belongs now to the baby down the hall.” Just a few years before, Kowalczyk discovered the writings of Indian spiritualist Jiddu Krishnamurti, whose philosophy of living life from a place of selflessness and humility influenced the singer’s songwriting process, as well as the band’s creative philosophy. “Lightning Crashes” was recorded and produced with Talking Heads’ Jerry Harrison as part of the sessions for Live’s sophomore effort, Throwing Copper, at the famed Pachyderm Studio in Minnesota, during the summer of 1993. Around this time, Barbara Lewis, a longtime friend of the band, was killed by a drunk driver while fleeing from the police after a robbery in York. The band dedicated the song to Lewis, who was only 19 when she died. The band debuted “Lightning Crashes” at Woodstock ’94 and released the official single a month later, on September 24, 1994.
The band dedicated this song to Barbara Lewis, one of their high school friends who was killed by a drunk driver around the time it was written. Her brother in-law Cory told Songfacts the story: "The song's lyrics are mostly an analogy. Barb donated several organs, including her heart. She was close with Ed [lead singer Ed Kowalczyk] and the guys and died in a car collision with a fleeing armed robber. These lyrics are constantly misunderstood! Yes, Ed is speaking to the circle of life, but specifically to how Barb's life gave new life to many. The angel, the baby down the hall, the pale blue eyes (of Barb), the pain ("confusion")... the lyrics are wholly Ed's interpretation of his experience and perception of Barb's impact. Our family has become close with the most genuine and caring man who is still alive today (over 10 years later), who has Barb's heart beating in his chest! 'Lightning Crashes' literally lives on."
“Lightning Crashes” is a meditation on the cycle of life, death, and reincarnation. Kowalczyk’s vision of the song was a hospital emergency room where people died and babies were born, a never-ending transference of life energy. Ed Kowalczyk’s was 21 and living with his mother when he wrote this song. Kowalczyk’s explains “To this day I have no idea where that song came from - and I love that.”
Dang right! Live "Throwing Copper" is a great album. I co-owned a CD/Cassette/Vinyl store from 92-98. Very few records were released on Vinyl in that era... Just the best bands: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden - these had midnight vinyl release parties - the Vinyl LPs were typically released a week before the CD & Cassette release date. And Live "Throwing Copper" was released on Vinyl, too: it was in that elite class. It was one of my favorite LPs (contemporary or retro) to put on the turntable and play in the store. I could never understand why this album (CD/Cassette/LP) it didn't sell better than it did. Absolute classic. One of the best of the 90's for sure.
I've liked this song since it was new, but it wasn't until several years ago that I paid attention to the lyrics and saw the video. Now, this song usually brings me to tears. My dad passed away in 2009, and my mom will be 91 soon, so I find myself thinking about how sad I'll be when her time comes.
My father passed away on Feb 7, 2019. I had 3 nephews born in the month prior to his passing. This song just sounds different when you've been on that kind of emotional rollercoaster.
Lex over here vibing, Brad just looking like he is confused. It's not a book, it's music. Always loved this song. The vibe is so chill and powerful. The build is cool. Never really analyzed the lyrics, but it didn't matter. The sound is what's real.
Lex just explained why reaction videos are popular. I first heard this song around 14 or 15 years old. I can't get that first listen back, but I can watch you. Same energy.
This song has always really touched me and is one of my favorites by Live. The song encapsulates both the unknown for the baby and new parent as well of the regrets of the older folks. The song is absolutely beautiful in how it illustrates the whole circle of life with two strangers in a hospital. Thanks for playing it.
The angel (soul) can feel the "fall," the metaphysical gravity pulling him into the body as the confusion of being human sets in... as the old woman down the hall drops her humanity and becomes an angel again.
This is one of my favorite songs, but it is really heart breaking. Makes me think about my grandmother a lot. It's about the cycle of life and generations. Similar to say the religious hymn "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" popular in country and blue-grass.
Thanks for doing this guys! There is so much emotion poured into this song about life, death, and new birth. Hope you’ll listen to it again later and experience it even more!
This band was HUGE in the early to mid-90s, especially on the East Coast. I saw them at the Virginia Beach Amphitheater in Aug 2000, they were co-headlining with Counting Crows and the opening act was Rusted Root

"Circle of Life," yes, exactly. in one room a new mother cries, in another an old mother dies -- and life goes on, circling around, a force that rolling out of the center of the earth into all living things, and back again, our bodies becoming the earth again, on and on.

It is a beautiful song about birth, death, and rebirth. Live are from a small town called York in PA. Basically Amish country. I'm from Pittsburgh PA and we all loved Live back in the 90s.
From what I always took from this song is that it's simply about the circle of life: a new baby is born, while at the same time a woman dies, and at the same time the new mother is so happy about her new child (who will soon take the roll of being the old mother dying, and the new baby will be the parent who has the new child). Their lyrics are all so poetically written and their music is great...you should definitely check out more from Live.
As others have said, it's about the circle of life. My interpretation of "Forces pulling from the centre of the earth again" is the "gravity" of the situation we find ourselves in at different times. Love love LOVE this song, always bring a tear to my eyes, from both the sadness and the joy of old lives and new. I feel the singer reach deep into my heart and grab hold.
