    Sometimes, Brad is weird. "What is that SOUND???" It's a guitar, Brad. Playing a simple melody. Because it's a song.

      Yeah, it’s guitar chord arpeggios played high up on the neck. This is why the electric guitar is THE most expressive musical instrument, 2nd only to the human voice…maybe. So many sounds and styles and impressions can be conjured from a guitar/amp/fx. : )

    • @ChrisTopher-ek6rr
      @ChrisTopher-ek6rr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Crackity_Jones. you can't pay attention to every aspect of the song, deeply, at one time... lyrics are far more important than sound imo, so. So not sure how your comment is directed as if he is at fault for following the lyrics (as his emo gf just vibes mindlessly to the sounds).

      @@ChrisTopher-ek6rr I guess I just disagree then. I would place the music first.I dont exactly blame him fully,I think lyric videos are a bit distracting anyway, and sometimes take away from the song

    • @ChrisTopher-ek6rr
      @ChrisTopher-ek6rr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Crackity_Jones. that's because you like thinks that do not provoke thought & instead provoke a "feeling". Anyone who places sound above substance is crazy imo. So yes, stark disagreement. I would go as so far to say to get out of your feelings when it comes to music & instead use your brain 👍 appreciating good instrumentation is one thing, but to value it over meaning is something else. May as well be listening to opera or jazz that has no lyrical substance.. the "sounds" of music you like is purely subjective, good lyricism (or crafting of words) is not.

      If you are referring to Florida's Parental Rights Bill, you have neither read any of the bullet points, are pro-groomer or a propagandist for the radical, extreme left. Propaganda (as often used by socialist & communist regimes) seeks to humiliate citizens through forced acceptance of absurdities.
      Those with radical, socialist viewpoints refuse to debate and let their facts go toe to toe with those who support a Constitutional Republic. That's because their "facts" are a facade for feelings and crumble upon scrutiny. I always loved Round Here because for as simple as it is, there's a lot of poetic expression within the lyrics. Someone once told me their interpretation of the song was people going to boot camp or OTS and all the mental struggles during it and its stuck ever since in my head. Like 'we always stand up straight' I always end up picturing a row of boots (trainees) trying to look in order but on the verge of breaking / crying.

      It says in the beginning "nobody notices the contrast of white on white". Then later on he says "nobody makes us get up early and nobody makes us wait". I think it's about a white well to do neighborhood.
      Then later on he talks about a girl on the beach walking like on a tightrope between the water and the land. Then brings you back up again when he mentions she's thinking of jumping. Probably referring to how living in an insular neighborhood can make you feel.

Lex and Brad are good on their breakdown of the song. Good group and song. BTW, Brad really liked "Mr Jones" from them, yall did a reaction to that not too long ago.
    Leans a little like Weezer I guess, lol, although Weezer tends to be a bit heavier.

    I once lived in the scene the lyrics describe: a group of young people living together communally, trying to make their way in the music business with little knowledge of how to do that, or even how to live as adults in the alternative lifestyle we were inventing for ourselves … “No one makes us go to bed early”….”We’re carving out our names… “we all look the same”… “we talk like lions, but we sacrifice like lambs”. And other wanderers, like Maria in the song, show up in our house with their own drama/trauma/beauty/tragedy, and we’re not able to give them what they need…
    Am I projecting my experiences from 40+ years ago into this song? You betcha. This song totally resonates with me! And plenty others, apparently, perhaps in totally different ways.
    Brad…it’s an electric guitar. I really do enjoy your reactions, and I appreciate your willingness to take on the music of a previous generation (or two). But sometimes your lack of context for understanding this music, while understandable, is frustrating to those of us that were there. So…we’re on this journey together. : )

      I agree, this totally nails it. Young people trying to figure out life while simultaneously feeling like they can't let anyone else know they don't have it figured out. Maria is the only one open to her vulnerability, and the narrator seeing himself in her, and his inability to help her as an indication he can't even help himself.

    I just saw them south of Nashville at the new amphitheatre in Franklin. It was the second show of their tourand they had just had a covid case in the crew. They had been holed up during pandemic, writing an album, and they were understandably rusty from not performing during the last two years of covid.
    It's important to note that Counting Crows has basically been touring constantly since their first album, back in the 90s. Almost two years off is the longest period of time that the haven't been on stage. There were sound problems and the set list needed to be rearranged, but the concert was still great.
    I'm heading to Memphis tomorrow for Beale Street Music Festival. They'll be there. I'm already excited to see them again.

    Brad, the sound you hear was a clean electric guitar with reverb not strumming chords but hitting single notes, which is not a sound you hear a lot as it was played to a hauntingly melancholy vocal. People giving you grief that you didn't know that forget that most of your musical experience was not in these genres. I applaud you for your exploration of new music love both of your reactions, keep up the good work.

    It is impossible to imitate the shakiness and vulnerability in his voice you either have it or not.... Also counting Crows are always heavily written in message poetry type style.... So depending on your perspective you might feel one way about a line and another on another day..... Kinda like every time you listen to an old Eminem song you still hear something new.... One day you listen to the crows and the song takes on a while new perspective!

    I'm usually of the mind that the song means whatever you take from it, but Adam Duritz's explanation from their VH1 set is just too good not to post. Sorry for the incoming wall of text.
    "The first way Counting Crows ever sounded, it was me and Dave in bars and coffee houses playing open mics, doing this song this way. The song begins with a guy walking out the front door of his house, and leaving behind this woman. But the more he begins to leave people behind in his life, the more he feels like he's leaving himself behind as well. The less and less substantial he feels like he's becoming to himself. And that's sorta what the song's about because he feels that even as he disappears from the lives of people, he's disappearing more and more from his own life.
    The chorus is, he sorta keeps screaming out these idioms these lessons that your mother might say to you when you were a kid, sorta child lessons ya know, "round here we always stand up straight", "carving out our names". Things that you are told when you are a kid that you do these things that.. that when you're grown up it'll add up to something, you'll have a job, you'll have a life. I think for me and the character of the song they don't add up to anything, it's just a bunch of crap kinda. Your life comes to you or doesn't come to you, but those things don't really mean anything.
    By the end of the song he's so dismayed by this that he's kinda screaming out that he can stay up as long as he wants and that no one makes him wait...the sort of things that are important if you are a kid. You know that you don't have to go to bed, you don't have to do anything. The sort of things that don't make any difference at all when you're an adult, they're nothing. And uh and uh this is a song about, about me."

    The perfect example of stellar songwriting. The entire album is fantastic. It's a song about coming of age Brad, and perhaps something more. I see this in the rearview now that I am in excess of 60. It is exact without being precise. In this way open to interpretation, however, I see several distinct threads and situations from my early days that completely mesh with this song. All that aside, practically every song is a masterpiece of songwriting. Even if you don't like the voice or arrangements read the lyrics. August and Everything After is a landmark album in my opinion. Your milage may vary :-)

    Check out the VH1 Storytellers with Counting Crows version, (basically VH1’s version of MTV’s Unplugged, but the concept is that the performers talk about the song before playing it,) because I think it’s just that guitar part and his vocals through most of the track.

    "This is a song about me," lead singer Adam Duritz said of this song on Counting Crows VH1 Storytellers appearance. Said Duritz: "The song begins with a guy walking out the front door of his house and leaving behind this woman. But the more he begins to leave people behind in his life, the more he feels like he's leaving leaving himself behind as well, and the less substantial he feels about himself. OKAY. This is the opening track of one of the greatest albums of all time, all bangers from end to end: "August and Everything After." I was mid-high school when this came out. A couple of years ago, maybe 2018, 2019? They went on tour and I went with a group of friends that I've known for many years here, but not from back in the day. On the way home after the show, the driver popped this on and we managed to sing the entire album all the way through just in time to get home. It was magical. There's even video. It's like a damn middle-aged, former teen movie. XD

    I’m fascinated by your reaction to the guitar sound. Being a distraction has never occurred to me, but now that you say it, it makes sense. It’s focus is in the frequency range where are ears are most sensitive, that of human speech while the vocals are a lot more mellow here. Now there is a kind of 90s white guy thing that a lot of singers from that era share, but these aren’t bros. This is far too poetic and thoughtful to be bro territory… ok well maybe a little bit 😂. One of my favorite records of the 90s here. It was kind of a game changer when it came out.
