Mercedes CLA vs Mercedes A-Class Sedan Review - What's the difference?

- Mercedes-Benz have released two cars which, if they aren't parked side-by-side, you might struggle to tell the difference between them.
Luckily, Ashley Oldfield from Cars.co.za forced Ciro De Siena to make a video covering this exact topic.
And so, here we go, a detailed review of these two cars which have the same engine, same gearbox, same chassis and same interior. They do differ on price, with the CLA listed at R37 000 more than the A-Class Sedan.
If you can hang around for 8 minutes, Ciro will give you our opinion on which one you should buy. Or you could just skip to around the 7:30 mark if you're pressed for time.

Cla looks good but A class is cheaper and more practical. More boot space in the A class and more head room in back seats.

Had a choice for both. Settled for A class saloon. The CLA looks better, but, the headroom in the back is poor compared to A saloon. So due to my personal circumstances I opted for the saloon. The front seats with the moulded headrests are uncomfortable after a time in the CLA as well. Had the saloon car for 6 months, and it's fabulous.

@@datway3582 What did you go for? Im looking at the 2022 amg prem plus but the A class has caught my eyes more than the CLA. Not a fan of the back of the CLA plus not worth the extra £ in my opinion if i can't tell the difference with interior
@@happyhero1093 Im waiting till September because used luxury vehicles are really going down in price right now man! Been watching the markets daily on a class and benz! But yo i LOVE the back of the CLA and hate the A class back LOL, cla is like mini cls to me with badges removed & a class reminds me of a nissan sentra! Also i got some second opinions and they say the A class is a bitch car, Since then ive seen young girls driving them in my area, Although A class i still love… Get AMG pkg 100% if u go for A class, A class has better space in back than cla too, interior specs are identical
@@datway3582 Hi and thank you for such a detailed response. Feels like you know your cars. Yes i can agree on the spacing at the back compared to the CLA just cos the CLA is more of a coupe slopping downwards. They are both nice and hard to split them really! What makes you think the second hand prices are going down? Here in the Uk they seem to not have moved at all. Still very high as new cars are still either not behind delivered on time, extended or recalled due to faults etc.
@@happyhero1093 No problem! Really? Well I am in north america, Canada. Here we have had a huge drop in tesla already and in last month mercedes prices are going down aswell! In UK the A class is much more reasonable… half my family is out there, Size for the roads is perfect also Hatch back version is extremely common out there man. Here car prices are expected to go down 10-30% by end of year
Slightly confused......spends 8 minutes saying there’s hardly any difference the 2 then compares the a class to a Toyota Corolla and recommends the CLA!! 😂

Cla is made in Hungary , A class saloon Is made in Germany , A class with the amg line & night pack added its the better car all round
They assemble it in Hungary but not every part of it is made there

Besides the frameless windows, don't know how you missed that the A-Class sedan has its rear number plate on its boot lid whereas the the CLA has it on the bumper.
I have been wondering about this ever since I saw there would be an A-class sedan.
I think I have an old german magazine which already wrote about an A-class sedan. I figured this ended up being the CLA though.

Malusi Mvundla told my friend to buy a CLA AMG spec so then she can look like she’s got a CLS without having to waste a shit ton of money. The CLS is a rip-off in my opinion though, that’s why I would rather have a CLA.
I bought the A220 in America about a year ago and I love it. It gets a ton of compliments.

You should have worn black T-shirt while driving black Car and White Tshirt while driving the white one.

Most will buy the A Class hatch and the CLA as a sedan.
I was really hoping to get an A250 or A220 sedan, but opted for a Stinger. Maybe I can get an A45s/CLA45s in a few years when it depreciates to like 50%

Went for the A200 Sedan in Portugal.
The CLA looks just a little bit better but with a great spec (and I specked the hell out of mine) you're looking at a 10.000€ price difference. Yes the base difference is around 8000€ but the optional are also more expensive on the CLA (paint, for instance).
Could not justify the money difference, so happy with the choice for now. Transitional car either way
I'd get the more practical sedan but in black, and put the 40k saving towards worthwhile etras like multibeam LED headlights (18k) the big display (10k) the factory towbar (11k) and advanced sound upgrade (4k). Oh and I checked and the A sedan is a larger car than the w203 C class of the early 2000's.

I want a video on the AMG A35 as well as I want races between it, the golf r, the new BMW M135i, the Audi S3, the Focus RS or St anything it can complete with as a entry level performance car.
Cla is lower wider and longer. Frameless windows better quality interior in terms of materials and stitching. Do I need to continue
There’s lots of differences between them, I had a 70 plate A class swapped it for a 21 plate CLA. Best decision ever, though the CLA petrol is heavy on fuel.

Love the CLA more, but my mom wants more room & more view from the back seats, so we pick the A in full AMG kit without the tall racing seats
For true Merc fans its easier to set them apart. The CLA looks abit longer than the A class sedan.

The CLA in the video has no climatised seats. The button for it is missing in both cars. You didn’t show the trunk space which is bigger for the CLA.

I purchased the cla and I am in love with the sportiness of the look, and it is also super fast, too. The downside of some mercedes is the rattling of the engine, which MB leads you to think this is normal. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.🇺🇲🚘

I’ve got the CLA 220 AMG PREMIUM PLUS, but the A class does look smart, premium plus is a must for me, when the headlights come on at night it looks like the kit car

They look very different from the back. The track on the CLA is wider also. Stop exaggerating. Also most manufacturers with cars on the same platforms have similar interiors. What's the big hooha here?

@@elmonyopi1577 All the German carmakers. In fact bmw interiors even look the same across every single model 1 to 7 series. Audi has done the same. The Q7 has the same as the Q8 and the same as the A8 and the same as the A6.
Cla looks better, I think it's the nicest of all mercs. However, living in a city center with a tight underground parking space I opted for the A class sedan.

Yes it is, the new facelift version. It actually already released at the end of 2019 but more known as a 2020 version.
I prefer a little more rear headroom since it's already considered below average on both cars.

The CLA is less than 1 cm wider. I would choose the sedan for more room in the rear seating area.
They are different cars for different audiences. The A class has more back passenger space and headroom., the CLA sacrifices that for a coupe look. I think the A class is the perfect small saloon.

My 2015 CLA-250 sport has 130,000miles with zero problems and I abuse the hell out of it by driving it on sport/manual mode all the time literally everyday I spent 300$ in gas monthly driving it that way lol

The a class rear is much more aggressive. They did something terribly wrong.
I'd say swap the a class rear with the cla and the cla would be perfect.
I actually prefer the rear of the CLA. Specially from the side. The A class looks like there is chopped a piece of the rear. Looks unfinished.

I would go for the A sedan. I wouldnt spend such money for a front wheel drive car, no matter how good looking it is

The S3 starts to look like great value in sedan form, and let's be honest while the Merc looks nice the quality will not be as tight as the Audi
It's surprisingly solid inside, actually, and feels far more premium than the Audi. Having looked at both, there's not much competition if you want a more premium feeling car. The Merc wins it.

I don't believe my luck. Just today morning, I was wondering which one suits me the best as they are so identical and similarly priced to each other and you've got me sorted. But don't you think most people won't care about the CLA's exterior styling and hence spending that extra bunch of money on it is pointless?

Rediculous. Just rediculous. I mean, when you think about it, the sedan version of the A class IS the CLA. Because, when you want a sedan version of a hatchback, which would be a smaller compact executive car, in the drawing board, it's the CLA.

Why compete with other brand when u can compete with yourself..that way, now customer will compare both Merc and decide to buy either one, rather than comparing it with a BMW.. I think they are trying to play with the mindset this way...

For real? Like.......the easiest and the pivotal difference is that the A is a 3-box car with a straight roofline while the CLA is the coupe with the sloping roofline and you don't see that as the major difference for Merc bringing in the A sedan?

The most important difference in my opinion is that CLA is made in Hungary and the A classe is made in Germany . Personally I have some doubts about the quality materials and painting on CLA

You forgot to point out that the the sedan looks so stumpy at the rear, the CLA is much better proportioned, I know as I spent so long Looking at both with my father who was buoying one. He was going to take the sedan because the CLA was not released but we had seen pictures and had decided to wait, as soon as the CLA hit the showroom it was a no brainer!
That fault that's on the dash is coz the battery was dead and was boosted. As u drive it more it will go away with a few starts
I love the CLA and always would. but i wud buy the A class. As for convenience and for getting family members to sit comfortably at the back... having said that. I won't be buying either of them. Bcuz i can't afford it lol

Previous generation of the CLA was pretty ugly. All the porpocions were wrong. The new one is better but still a bit off. Very long and with huge overhangs.
For me the A sedan has a better design. The fact of being shorter helps.
I don't get what's with all the emphasis on style and looks. The rear seat space is exactly what drives most people to buy the sedan. Or throw in a bit more and get the shooting brake.
If you don't care for features, definitely go for C-class or the new 3 series.

Mercedes and audi make the same car in diffetent sizes, C E S class respectively. This time around the made the same car in the same size just styled one better.
They’re different cars. Compare the a class sedan to the cla 250 you’ll see the difference. Different chassy and engine power. The cla creates no wind noise and has adaptive dampers whereas the a class Doesnt.

I just don't understand why some of these Mercedes A-Class vehicles including the 1Mil+, A45s have no dual zone climate control and the climate controller is all the way on the passenger side of the car!!!!!!!!!!! Why is the dual zone not standard?????
